The fact that they tell you that sicario means hitman right from the beginning just made it more intriguing because you sit there thinking who is the hitman. all 3 leads played their roles perfectly. emily blunt's character was naive because the work she had been doing was on no scale near what she was about to experience. brolin shows up in his first scene in flip flops so you dont really know what he is about and benicio doesnt even tell her his name when blunt introduces herself, adding to the mystery of why he is even there. it was intense and beautifully shot, and because of the recent happenings with el chapo, almost made it feel completely real. even the scenes with the mexican cop and his son and wife having breakfast made you wonder what the hell was going on. this is a 5 star film all the way!
FriedEagleMind when somebody gets paid to be a critic and they aren't holding up their end of the deal then you've got the go ahead to critique their work. They should expect it, since it's what they are doing to somebody else's work. Now that you've been schooled on how constructive criticism works, you can now apply it to real life scenarios and blossom as a human being. Welcome to the internet.
The origin of the word Sicario is what's important not necessarily the definition. I think the CIA in this movie were hitmen. They were defending their country from the invading army of drugs.
+NeonGlowment yeah that was so DUMB at the beginning, the name sicario its perfect for the movie and it doesn't just pay off to an estereotipical or esthetic notion of cartels but it is deeply co-related with the final plot twist. I mean... SPOILERS!!!! The freakin CIA just hired a hitman to level the ground of drug distribution.
***** Sometimes their reviews really baffle me, like with The Imitation Game or The Place Beyond the Pines. Prisoners is excellent. 8.1 IMDb, 81% Rotten Tomatoes. But don't take my word for it. Watch it!
+0=Axel=0 That deserved some hate for its overrated-ness. I can never get how loads of people thought it was the best film of the year, unless they haven't watched many movies to begin with. It is a fine thriller, but it totally tries to be more than it actually is which irritated me whereas this seems different to that, as well as Incendies which is so much better than the English language films I've seen of his so far.
+0=Axel=0 A lot of the critics that actually watch a lot of movies throughout the year including various art and foreign films gave rotten reviews to Prisoners. Of course, only a selected group of people actually care more about movies that aren't Hollywood or Hollywood-esque.
Its about time that Emily Blunt gets offered a high profile lead in a superhero film. She has proven her action chops, having starred in action oriented films like Looper, Edge of Tomorrow, and now Sicario, and holding her own against the men. Marvel or DC needs to make this happen!
mialolm Black Canary. Granted, the character already exists in the DC TV universe, with the show Arrow, but as with The Flash, the DC cinematic universe will have different a actor portraying the same character that is on TV. So I think Emily Blunt would make a great Black Canary
+Drake Santiago She was originally offered Black Widow in Iron Man 2 but she had to drop out because of scheduling commitments to, yes really, Gulliver's Travels.
William Bibbiani First, I am honored to get a response from such an astute and insightful critic. Thank you. I actually did not know that she was offered the role of Black Widow. I kind of wish she had taken it. While I think Scarlett Johanssno has done well in the role, and she definitely embodies the sex appeal of the character, I would have preferred seeing Emily Blunt in the role, because she would have lent the character more strength.
in the movie whenever characters are talking to blunt, it feels like theyre talking to the viewers. All they say to her are things like "just keep watching" and "you will question everything we do, but in the end it will all make sense" i felt like her character was representative of the viewer and it was awesome.
The message is crude and cruel, but not unfair and certainly it´s not hopeless, at the end it´s all about changing your perspective an realize that if you are not willing to see outside the box you have no chance to figth (not win) this gigantic force which is clearly unstoppable. Trust me, im mexican.
Benicio del Toro was the sicario. The whole movie was really about him. I felt like these reviewers didn't understand that. You would think it's about Emily Blunt, but the movies only just seen Through The Eyes of her character. As she's not really in any power to do anything. I think the whole meaning of this movie is that as the most powerful government in the world we think we can go anywhere and do anything we want. The only one that could do anything and this movie though was the Mexican Hitman. Not that his methods were the best but everyone needed him to get the job done, as dirty as it was.
I've noticed that with Emily Blunt in this movie, there are far more complaints lodded against the weakness of her character as opposed to her actual performance. Is that good or bad?
May be a bit late but I thought she was good, it was the character that was flawed, which is basically my only real issue with the movie after just watching it.
As of this weekend, SICARIO is fully released to the public everywhere and I'm hoping everyone is enjoying it as much as I did! I actually saw an advanced preview of it before it was released, and I made a review video about the movie on my channel! It would be cool if some of you guys check it out :) And don't worry, no spoilers! Hope to hear from some of you in my comments section! This movie was awesome!
Bloody hell, do these people like anything? I've seen sicario and it's a very well crafted film, one of the better of the year, in my opinion. These guys just seem so curmudgeonly these days. Maybe it's just an American thing.
So much praise, so little content. Yeah the acting and shooting is great, but it's boring. Plot points are kept secret from the audience for no reason, and are very underwhelming when they are revealed, but it's way too long, abd way too little happens way too slowly. One cool shootouts does not make an "exciting thriller"
It wasn't THAT gorey lol And I have absolutely zero negatives to say about Benicio's performance. Anyway, I saw an advanced preview of the film a while ago and uploaded a review video to my channel - so check it out if you like! :)
I enjoyed the movie, but wasn't that big a fan of Emily blunts character. She seemed in over her head. The Benicia deal toro and josh Brolin characters were far more interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing them do more movies around them.
A moat filled with waste water would insure the wall from any tunneling under it.The irony of the movie how easily an American agent was brought to discontinue the female agent in the movie that was vary disturbing because everybody is always ridiculing the police in foreign countries that showed that corruption in the U.S. is also a problem.
**SPOILER ALERT**How can he say the title doesn't mean anything? In the last scene with Del Toro and Blunt and after the movie ended it hit me that Benicio Del Toro is the Sicario.
Do you know Denis Villaneuve? This guy is no hack and Sicario isn't a generic "shoot em up" thing or dull as True Detective. A "shoot em up" is something like Hitman or The Transporter.
Howard is great but he clearly started biting benny and insulting a demigod like Benicio like that...Benicio is a natural squinter and has been mumbling since The usual suspects...but he didn´t mumble in Sicario,he was crystalclear. They look alike,is that what got em confused? Not impressive...Obvious they haven´t watched alotta Del toro in the last 10 years.
I THOUGHT HER CHARACTER WAS VERY WEAK. SHE SEEMED TO SPEND MUCH OF THE TIME LOOKING PERPLEXED AND POSING A SERIOUS WEAK POINT TO HER TEAM. I'M NOT IN FAVOR OF A SMALL WOMAN BEATING THE CRAP OUT OF 7 BIG DUDES EITHER THAT'S JUST STUPID AND UNBELIEVABLE, BUT SHE COULD HAVE BEEN MORE ENGAGED WHILE STILL MAKING HER CONCERNS KNOWN.
Villeneuve's reason why the main character was written as a woman is not because the character is supposed to be portrayed as weak. The reason is that the main character sticks to its conviction and moral standards until the end of the movie even when she has the chance to shoot Alejandro. All this is much more believable with a woman. With a man it would be much more imaginable that he would soon give in to the morally dubious procedures of the CIA.
They're praising the shit out of Roger Deakins but they never talk about Dennis Villeneuve's brilliant directing... I mean yess Roger Deakins is an amazing cinematographer but Villeneuve's vision is amazing and he definitely made this ok scenario look amazing on film!!
A wall would definitely cut down the flow of contraband and illegal immigrants. You would have to construct it from Texas all the way up to California.Preferably from concrete, rebar and recyclable materials to create a wall you could drive on to get a birds eye view of the international border.
This movie was hard for me to watch. It just reminds me that no one is all good and no one is all evil. And Benicios character was just as evil as the Cartel in my opinion. But it was beautifully shot. And realistic.
As soon as they said that the title "Sicario" aka "Hitman" doesn't "mean anything in the film" I realized that everything that Alonso says is bullshit. Did you actually watch the movie? Seriously? Do you get paid to do this?
What The Flick throws up some serious half assed reviews sometimes and this is definitely one of their worst. Not understanding why it’s called Sicario is weird
Oh god. Everytime Roger Deakins has shot we have to hear how amazing he is. He also happens to be a friend of Christy, which pretty much makes her completely biased on the subject of Deakins. She should not be allowed in the room when they're reviewing a film he had anything to do with. Mostly because it's unbearable, and he's not some photographer god, who's just so much more awesome then the rest of them. Just take it down a notch. Well about 100 notches actually.
+basquat76 His movies generally look better and are shot better than most movies in general, so yes he should receive praise. I do think Christy goes on about beautiful cinematography without rarely ever going in depth with what that cinematography is utilized to convey in the narrative and just commenting on how pretty it all is.
Well Roger Deakins is amazing though. He is one of the cinematographers that are analyzed and studied a lot in film school and film enthusiasts. Also licking Christy's ass? That sounds swell.
Enrique Godinez You know i went to film school. Do you have any idea how many different film photgraphers we analyzed and studied? But fact is Christy knows him personally which makes it a conflict of interest and on top of that, they mention any other photographer, and they're all very skilled. Deakins isn't some god like creature who's just that much better then the rest of them. If you think that then you're an idiot.
basquat76 I have studied tons about film so don't try to say that I don't know cinematographers because I know very well the works of DP's from all different eras of film. What I don't like is that you try to dismiss Deakins work who is somebody that deserves credit. Just give credit to where credit it's due.
Enrique Godinez I don't dismiss it. That's jsut reading into what you want. What i'm saying for the third time he's not some cinematographer god. He's not the Messi of photographers. The rest of them are just as good. And Christy isn't unbiased on the subject either dipshit. What i don't like about you is your lack of reading abilities and basic logic.
I will see Emily Blunt in anything, regardless of genre :) That being said I don't really buy her in this judging from the trailers, but I am probably not seeing the whole picture.
It was visually captivating but it's story was run of the mill and the performances and script were bland in my opinion. I think it thought it was more provoking than what it was. I found it to be a bore. Cinematography was amazing.
del toro was sthe star. brilliant shot movie. music, lights, action, actors, colors everything is so good. Can't wait for sicario capos. You did not get too much of the movie, isn't it?
+St4rdog Yeah, Bibbiani said exactly what I thought about her character. If anything I thought she was worse than that in that some of her actions were nonsensical and she would have been killed if the movie was consistent.
+Enrique Godinez Ikr? I just saw it and while from the trailer I was expecting something bigger to happen in it, it was still insanely intense. Great movie.
I've seen some dumb complaints, but not understanding why the film is named Sicario is the dumbest.
What are they talking about at 3:31? The title means everything, so much so that it's almost a spoiler.
This is a five star movie in my eyes.
Eh
This is a five star movie on a four star scale.
Agreed
4.5. I appreciate it a lot but the middle isn’t perfect. 1st and 3rd act are brilliant though.
You didnt understand why they called it "Sicario" ?? Did you actually watch the movie?
exactly, Del Toro is the Sicario, that is the twist
+FirebirdCamaro1220 idk if I'd say it was a twist
@@wurst656 he most definitely was the sicario. That is why at the end, it focuses on him
Prisoners and Enemy were very thrilling, tf wrong with y'all?
Weapon XL at the very least
The flip flops were an immediate give away that he was a spook. That was the first thing I said to my girl. "He's a spook. ". Lmao.
I laughed really hard when Christy said, "Roger Deakins shot Villeneuve's Prisoners."
+Matt Cipolla because it's obvious or because her best friend was the cinematographer for a movie she does not like
+Daniel Findura Because it sounds like Deakins killed jail inmates.
Damn ok
+Matt Cipolla My hero.
i.laughed when she said it made it better than it really was.
and yet not one mention of the film's amazing score (which should have won the oscar). Shame on you guys.
For real
wow commenters on What the Flick will seriously complain about anything

I think the CIA in this movie were hitmen. They were defending their country from the invading army of drugs.

that one guy that kills the head of the cartel that was the sicario

Gonzalo Olguín I liked how this movie had three plots, the drug war, sicario's revenge, and Kate doing her job.
youre correct
Wow, Christy with all the totally undeserved Prisoners hate. Really great movie.
+0=Axel=0 well, WTF in general did give Prisoners a pretty negative review

I can never get in the minds of these guys, but I really love them. I wonder when The Visit reviews will come out...or nobody probably seen it.
+Ndoelicious I saw it but I was out of town last week. It's not bad. Not amazing but definitely a step in the right direction for Shyamalan.

+Nix This is such an odd comment. They all liked it. And no, it's not an 'American thing'. Whatever that means.
Yeah, I really don't know what the OP was getting at.
Arrival was not shot by Roger Deakins neither Incendies and they're acting like Denis movies are just good because of Deakins.

This movie was hard for me to watch. It just reminds me that no one is all good and no one is all evil. And Benicios character was just as evil as the Cartel in my opinion. But it was beautifully shot. And realistic.

so was he a hit man or what?
a lot of words are spoken but not much said.

+MarkDeMort quagmire is an area of land with a soft muddy surface
Yeah, I really didn't like it overall. It was extremely well made, but left me feeling shocked and cold. Eh. I wouldn't seek out to watch it again.
This film is almost exactly like the Mexican drug cartel version of Zero Dark Thirty.
lol it makes Seals Team Six look like the boy scouts.
Skyhound ARCHER
Tied with Carol for best of the year imo
Am I the only one bothered by the excessive use of "uh" & "um" by everyone; especially people paid to talk for a living?
Christy's wearing sandals - hmm!
Review Mr. Robot, Christian Slater FTW!
I'm glad I didn't watch the trailer before seeing the movie
Aaaaand I have to wait till October 2nd to see it. Ugh.
Benicio Del Toro has been squinting and mumbling in movies waaay longer than Terence Howard...there's no "maybe" about it Alonso...
Just saw this movie today and it's a very intense movie.thumbs up!
What the fuck the trailer spoils the whole movie, I'm glad I watched it before watching this
Blunt's character was so annoying, pointless and fake in this movie. The POV should've been Del Toro and it would've been a truly great movie.
+St4rdog Yeah, Bibbiani said exactly what I thought about her character. If anything I thought she was worse than that in that some of her actions were nonsensical and she would have been killed if the movie was consistent.
Guy on the right did a bad job here. A bit spoilerish and moral prude.
I love this movie
Great movie...the drug game is so much bigger than all of us.
This film was MAAAAAAAAAAAAD MUMBLING haha
If americans stop trying to act funny all the time, this review wud have been good!!

the most boring film ever
For real?
+Daniel Findura Unfortunetely yes. It's not a good movie. It's the worst movie in Villeneuve's career. I'm fan of this director.
+Maciej Niedźwiedzki I wouldn't call that bust disgusting at all.
Boring? How is this film boring? You may not like it bun in no way it's boring.
+Enrique Godinez Ikr? I just saw it and while from the trailer I was expecting something bigger to happen in it, it was still insanely intense. Great movie.
An overblown. paint-by-numbers action movie.
