I don't know, I'm starting to kinda like Joel Edgerton. Still happy I didn't recognize him as 'Uncle Owen' in the Star Wars Prequels ('oy...), but the things he's done since, he's done well.
+Gangrel Aussie I give everybody in those stupid movies a pass (yes, even Hayden Christensen) because no matter how badly they performed in it... IT WAS LUCAS THAT GAVE US JAR JAR BINKS! LUCAS=EVIL!!!!!!!
Since he started his career on 21 Jump Street (the tv show) Johnny Depp has tried a lot of different roles. Yes, he got stuck in the Pirates films, but he also did The Tourist (which is quite romantic & I don't often care for Angelina Jolie), and Into The Woods (small part but he sang). He can act . . . and he's carved out a wonderful, long lasting career for himself. Looking forward to this new dimension of his acting portfolio.
Dear lord i don't think Christy should be reviewing a movie like this when she clearly doesn't even understand what a sociopath is. A sociopath doesn't have a drive or motivation, and Depp played it one note because sociopaths are one note. See: Bale in American Psycho, Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler, Mcdowell in Clockwork Orange, Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, the guys from Funny Games.
Whoa, my brother and I felt the exact same way. I whole heartedly agree with Alonso (except for the business with Edgerton (who's awesome)), and my brother whole heartedly agrees with Christy.
Looking forward to the 'Sicario' review. On the 'Black Mass' review, not precisely important and I understand time can be an issue, but I do wish there had been some discussion of the movies and television shows prior to this more on point film that referenced the story of Whitey Bulger. Most recently, there was the first season of 'Ray Donovan' with James Woods character being an extremely obvious portrait of Whitey (and an amusing idea of what it means to be in hiding from the FBI); but even before that there were direct links in 'The Departed' and either HBO / Showtime (difference?) had a series called 'Brotherhood' which was even more directly linked, featuring Jason Isaacs as the mobster, but also had the state senator brother and the family FBI friend. It's just interesting how much time passed before this movie came out, like all the others were test cases that stole the best of the story and took it's thunder out from under it.
Two things, 1st-Whitey Bulger was known for his piercing blue eyes, so Johnnys contacts fit the bill. 2nd-It is unfair to compare any gangster film to Goodfellows, Goodfellows is a masterpiece. Even Scorcese can not replicate it. He has tried and came somewhat close with Casino but even that was a few notches below.
Finally saw this on HBO tonight after being genuinely interested in renting it, (and somehow never got around to), until now. Johnny Depp is fucking TERRIFYING in this movie. It's fascinating really, and I now find myself researching real Bulger interactions from those who have either known him or crossed paths with him at any given point. I will also add a quick sentiment to this; great cinematography, sense of place (this oozes Boston from the on point verbiage to carefully framed shots), excellent casting, fresh premise for a mob movie even if just following true events, and avoiding to attempt certain romanticism and cinematic elements of past monumental mob films. It feels like its own body of work, and thankfully that also brings some element of believability to the world. Edit: 8/10.
Most of the mixed reviews bring up the same things as Christy did: too much makeup, Edgerton stole the show, Depp was one note acting, wasn't like Goodfellas, etc.. I've been looking for unique criticisms but everyone seems to be borrowing them from each other.
Rustin Cohle thanks for at least giving some insight on those critiques and I can now see why everyone was saying the same. I'm waiting for the home release to see for myself.
I'm going to get backlash for this but I didn't like it. I thought it was super boring. Johnny Depp did a good job acting. Glad Whitey Bulger was brought to justice.
+Who Cares I was saying that 6.2+8.5 divided by 2 (you know, the simple equation to discover their average score) does not equal 7.5, as they said that it did. It equals 7.35. They usually round to one decimal place so it actually should be 7.4. I do hope that labeling me as having low intelligence boosted your self esteem though. Also, I know I am the idiot, but it is "you're," not "your."
Blue contacts never look very good, brown contacts can be alright but the light on dark of blue contacts on brown eyes never works. It's alright in Lord of the Rings, Legolas' contacts are alright but I think it has more to due with the shape of Bloom's eyes.
I was more swayed by Alonso's appreciation than I was by Christie's prejudices. Sometimes a critic would do well to be upfront with why she dislikes Johnny Depp or why she resents that people keep making mob movies. Because since they have no chance of being reviewed favorably by her she's, in fact, telling a lie to the listeners. "Even the greatest cinematic effort will pass right over my head due to my prejudices." I love the way Alonso kept sticking up for the film. No it didn't have to give us reasons why Bolger was a psychopath. No Depp's' makeup wasn't so bad that I couldn't watch his character. And on and on.
I know I'm alone but I really liked Transcendence. Also, Joel Edgarton has always been good. He was great in Warrior. He was even good in his small part in Zero Dark Thirty. He's a good actor. Much better than Alonso seems to give him credit for.
Christie ALWAYS lists the cast, as if there is nothing else to say. And then Alonso ALWAYS complains that these great actors aren't given enough to do. But what's so wrong about great actors in small roles? If you make them bigger, the movie might drag. Or does he think small roles should be reserved for unknown and upcoming actors?
+Lauffles well of course Ben needs to see the film. That goes without saying. At least I thought it did. I will be more clear and complete in future comments
Alonso thought Joseph Gordon Levitt was too fake looking in Looper, but he thinks Johnny Depp is acceptable in this... that seems overly inconsistent to me. Johnny Depp looks terrible in this movie. But maybe the acting is good enough for your brain to tell your vision it makes enough sense.
Sorry, Cumberbatch is too British in his features to seem like he's from Mass. I was surprised by the accent, because visually he cues his British accent for me. I will say, I understand Christy on Depp's appearance. It draws my attention in the trailer, so I could see the potential for it to distract.
Alonso and Christy are both missing the problems with this movie. Black Mass was pretty good overall but it's just too cold and bleak. Goodfellas and The Departed had similar dark subject matter but they were much more fun and full of energy. Everyone in Black Mass was such a miserable, cold person that I didn't really care what happened to any of them. I don't require protagonists for me to like a film but if the cast is all antagonists than at least write and direct them with life and energy.
One thing that needs to change with What The Flick is the scoring. I've always had a problem with it. Keep it at whole numbers...maybe a number and a half. I'd understand someone giving a film an 8.5. Maybe it was really good, but didn't meet the threshold of greatness, so you're stuck in the middle. Completely understandable. But when you get into 6.2 and 7.8 and all those stupid scores you really can't critically justify what that .2 or .8 was. "Oh, I think I'll give this movie a 5.7". I always just face palm. Again, don't want to be a troll or nag. I thoroughly enjoy most of your reviews, but just some food for thought :-P
How Do You Tell The Story In A Way That Hasnt Been Told? By Telling The Goddamn Story?! This Isnt Supposed To Be Goodfellas or Casino, This Shit Is A True Story That Actually Happened, You Tell The Story By Telling What Actually Happened! The Make Up Is No Issue As Long As Your Not Expecting To See Johnny Depp Play A Role, Rather Than See A Role Played By Depp, He Looked Almost Exactly Like Whitey! Bravo On The Makeup People! And Edgerton Steals The Show Because Depp is More Of Supporting Actor In This Movie, Depps Role As Whitey Remains Constant, He Never Really Changes, Edgerton's Charecter Is On A Sort Of Emotional Rollercoaster, Basically Edgerton's Role Is Dynamic, And Depps Role Is Constant, And As For There Not Being A Hero or Someone To Root For, THere Isnt Supposed To be! This Is A TRUE STORY! If You Want TO Accurately Portray A True Story, Then You Cant Just Invent People or Roles That Were Never There To Begin With! This Movie Is About How Fucked Up The Winter Hill Gang and Whitey Especially Were, And how The FBI Let Them Run Boston For So Long! Thats It, Nothing more Nothing Less, I Though This MOvie Was Excellent And Id Give It A 3.5/4 Any Day Of The Week! Highly Reccommend Getting It on DVD Or Watching It Online If your Havent Seen it Already! This Review, Is Pure Horseshit, Done By THe Most Unproffessional "Movie Critics" if You Could Even Call Them That, I Feel I Gave A More Professional And Accurate Portrayal And Review Of This Film, And Im Just Some Random Dude Who Pours Concrete For A living, Why Do THese People Even Have Their Own Channel, and Its Not Just From This One Review, i Found ALot OF Their Reviews Have Been Flawed, Cmon Guys! Get The Act Together, Actually be Professional! And Reasonable, And Realistic, In Less Words, Be Film Critics!
You guys do realise that everyone who's not American don't get this Boston 'accent' nonsense don't you? Alonso, if you don't stop with the stutter I'm not going to be able to watch your reviews cause it's so bloody annoying
Okay Christy, you don't like Johnny Depp we get it... Joel Edgerton can do no fucking wrong blah blah blah.
I don't know, I'm starting to kinda like Joel Edgerton. Still happy I didn't recognize him as 'Uncle Owen' in the Star Wars Prequels ('oy...), but the things he's done since, he's done well.

Shadowman4710 The day Lucas sold Star wars to Disney was a great day and i hate Disney.
C Targaryen Get out of my head, please :)
Shadowman4710 Jar Jar was definitely an indication of his directing style. "Just give it to the tech guys for touch up in 20 years."

After watching this movie what the flick is Christie talking about!?
Johny Depp good in a movie? And Shamafraud geting decent reviews for The Visit. Damn. Did we go back 20 years?
Dear lord i don't think Christy should be reviewing a movie like this when she clearly doesn't even understand what a sociopath is. Treefrog Johnson Thad what I was thinking 😂 didn't know what she was on about with the "motive" thing.
I NEVER agree with Christy.. she's always so negative and never gives high scores.
+XmynameislameX She personally doesn't like Johnny Depp for some odd reason
No review for The Visit?
what happened to all the show reviews?
Whoa, my brother and I felt the exact same way. I whole heartedly agree with Alonso (except for the business with Edgerton (who's awesome)), and my brother whole heartedly agrees with Christy.
Christy vs Alonso. Round 1. FIGHT!
Looking forward to the 'Sicario' review. The makeup does look weird. I am glad Christy Lemire brought that up.
No mention of 'Donnie Brasco' which also featured Depp?
Opening scene, was that the guy from Breaking Bad?
+Jay Quintana Yes.
meth Damon...
Julianne Nicholson is from Boston (suburban Medford)
Im with Christy on pretty much everything.
The film was good but not great which i think detracts people from realising Johnny Depp was fucking incredible in this movie.
A more direct comparison would be to "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" with Peter Boyle in the Whitey Bulger role.
Finally saw this on HBO tonight after being genuinely interested in renting it, (and somehow never got around to), until now. Johnny Depp is fucking TERRIFYING in this movie. I agree with Alonso, I really like this movie, Depp's performance is chilling in this.
6.2+8.5 does not equate average of 7.5.
+Who Cares I was saying that 6.2+8.5 divided by 2 (you know, the simple equation to discover their average score) does not equal 7.5, as they said that it did. It equals 7.35. +sk8dudesk8on You're right. It averages out to 7.35 or (rounding off) 7.4.
Too bad they all couldn't have been at TIFF. I really want to see their review of 'Anomalisa'
I have yet to see a review of a movie these guys genuinely like .
+Victor Morales Apparently you haven't watched a lot of their reviews
+Victor Morales They're movie critics, they don't like any movie.
+SinisterSkyline so being a movie critic must suck .
+SinisterSkyline so being a movie critic must suck .
+Erik Bateson I haven't , I've watched a few , I just found them and haven't heard them actually like a movie yet .
Depp was "diesel" in this the way that Russell Crowe was in Romper Stomper or that Eric Bana was in Chopper!
Blue contacts never look very good, brown contacts can be alright but the light on dark of blue contacts on brown eyes never works. It's alright in Lord of the Rings, Legolas' contacts are alright but I think it has more to due with the shape of Bloom's eyes.

She gives everything a bad score!
Review Mr. Robot, don't sleep on Remi Malek + Christian Slater.
I know I'm alone but I really liked Transcendence. Also, Joel Edgarton has always been good. He was great in Warrior. He was even good in his small part in Zero Dark Thirty. He's a good actor. Much better than Alonso seems to give him credit for.

movie snobs talking....... (white noise)
did she just say "pirates" was shitty??
I completely agree with Christy. +1
Christy hates it, so it might be good.
No Ben? why bother posting a video? Christy goes a long way but she can't do it by herself.
+Lauffles well of course Ben needs to see the film. That goes without saying. At least I thought it did. I will be more clear and complete in future comments
Benedict Cumberbatch, the prototypical Englishman, plays a Boston Irish guy? There's something odd about that.
The average score is an 7.35, which rounds up to a 7.4, not 7.5. Get it right guys, you have plenty of time to edit this stuff before posting!
I like Johnny depp but the makeup they put on him looks weird even though they tried their best I just don't see johnny depp as whitey bulger
i really liked depp in 'blow'. but since then...
Oh wow old review RUclips recommended but goodness all her takes are.....interesting..to be nice...
If you watched the trailer you've seen the whole movie
Alonso thought Joseph Gordon Levitt was too fake looking in Looper, but he thinks Johnny Depp is acceptable in this... that seems overly inconsistent to me. Johnny Depp looks terrible in this movie. But maybe the acting is good enough for your brain to tell your vision it makes enough sense.
Um... That type-o.
First thing I did was go through the comments to see if anyone mentioned it. You're the only one... Well spotted!
Thanks!

4 and an A from the Critic and the Uncle
Agree with Christy 100%

They should have just got Ed Harris for the lead.
I love Ed Harris, but he would've been way too old in order to chronicle his characters essential arc.
who are these clowns
Good.
Scorsese should've directed this with Dicaprio as bulger
+Victor Morales Enough with DiCaprio already.
I think the make-up makes him look a little like Ray Liotta.

Johnny Depp is a adorable
Do these guys hate every single movie they review. I thought Blake Mass was as good as Goodfellas!
This is a joke right
+Charles Testrake I loved Black Mass. It's one of my favourite films of this year, but it doesn't touch GoodFellas.
