    I firmly believe that the majority of the people commenting did not really see the movie and are strictly judging by the trailer. If you had seen the movie, you'd know that McCarthy isn't just a prop for fat/fall down jokes. She kicks a serious amount of butt in this. Also, the movie is flat out funny, action packed and violent. Completely deserving of the 8.0+ score.

      +Modern Day Masterpiece This is one of those movies that makes me sigh a lot. Not quite painful to watch but this movie has been done many times before and it failed like the others. At the very least XXX was entertaining. This movie was boring. Actually Ace Ventura made me laugh and it was the first movie I saw that used this formula. Granted I was 10 but I digress.

      ohthepeppers Pity them or laugh? Are you kidding me? They are actual critics, industry professionals, and who are you exactly? Yeah, I thought so. So how about you get off that high horse and realize that liking something does not make it good.

    • @jamesperkins6720
      @jamesperkins6720 9 лет назад +2

      Martin Zakrzewski The by-line matters, there's no critic you'll agree with completely, the individual scores matter more than the average, and there is no such thing a a purely objective review, every one bring their biases with them and coming into a movie with the wrong frame of mind can shift you from thinking of a film is a piece of artistic genius to thinking it's pretentious twaddle.
      Never think the scores important, it's listening to or reading the whole thing and knowing where you disagree with a critic which makes it useful to you and gives you an impression of if you'll enjoy this film or not. Complaining about someone else rating this film higher or lower than you would like is like complaining about it raining, you can keep going till you've got a sore throat but it will still be raining ;)

    I loved this movie so much. Melissa McCarthy is amazing and deserves more recognition. Jason Statham is the best part of this movie. Everyone is so mean to her in this movie. damn! My only complaint is that it's way too long. they should have cut 30 minutes of it out.

    One of the unique qualities of Melissa McCarthy is that she has a great talent for physical comedy which is sooooo rare in a female actress.

  • @blueeyesaf
    @blueeyesaf 9 лет назад +11

    Yes Matt, from Firefly, not only is her character better in Firefly (Jesus, Brody's fucking family in Homeland, they're all awful) but it's a better all around show.

    • @movieman82us
      @movieman82us 9 лет назад +3

      Alexander Forbes Firefly is overrated by those who saw it. Homeland is great. She's great in it too even though they involved the Brody family longer than they should have, admittedly.

    • @blueeyesaf
      @blueeyesaf 9 лет назад +4

      movieman82us What do you mean "by those who saw it"? Who else would like it?

    • @CrabJock
      @CrabJock 9 лет назад +1

      Alexander Forbes if you don't like something, and a lot of people do, "overrated" devalues the merit of their opinions. Which somehow steers the whole thing into the realms of objectivity (nah, it doesn't). How else can the one opinion be worth more than the many? Call things "overrated" and "underrated", of course!
      "All those who saw it", meaning that all who saw it praise the show. He's pretty much just throwing a blanket over the entire majority as to not leave any meat for the buzzards.
      I like both shows. Not gonna get into which one is better, because I like variety, and would rather just bask in the positives. Creating tiers in the mind, setting metaphorical bars in terms of standards is a sure fire way to become a cynic. Call me old fashioned, but I love to like more than I love to hate.

    • @movieman82us
      @movieman82us 9 лет назад

      Saying something is overrated devalues the merit of people who do? That is full of shit.
      Overrated simply means that you disagree with the consensus. That's all it means. And the majority of people who saw Firefly love it thus why I said it's overrated by those who saw it. I say those who saw it because I somebody once tried to make the excuse that because not many people saw the show, it can't be overrated. Again, I think that's bullshit. As I said, most who saw it, loved it. I didn't. Thus, I think it's overrated.

    • @movieman82us
      @movieman82us 9 лет назад

      The definition of overrated is having a higher opinion of someone or something than is deserved? That doesn't even make sense. That's what underrated means. Overrated means having a lower opinion of something or someone.
      Second, you can disagree on something while still have high opinions on those you disagree with. There are plenty of critics I enjoy reading even when I disagree with them. Therefore, I think they are overrating or underrating something but I still value their opinion.

    Just watched it. No way in hell is this an 8+ movie. Didn't laugh out loud once. Barely broke a smile. No one in the theater laughed, except for a few people who where trying to force a laugh by laughing at something that wasn't even funny. The movie was somewhat enjoyable, but not LOL funny. Even the fight scenes weren't well coordinated or entertaining. The proper score should be 6.5 - 7.0

      Not fair, I'd say. He's trying to distinguish between someone with a different comedy presence than you expect and "Ha ha! Fat man fall over! - Paul Blart Mall Cop." Melissa McCarthy's definitely better than that.

  • @markalexander774
    @markalexander774 9 лет назад +1

    I've never found Melissa McCarthy to be funny, nothing she has been in have I found funny or amusing, many of her movies (Tammy, the Heat, etc.) have I been even able to make it through the trailers without immediately wanting to stop watching them. Is this finally a movie worth watching of hers? I want to believe because the supporting cast seems pretty good, but she just doesn't do it for me.

  • @chrisokeeffe3895
    @chrisokeeffe3895 9 лет назад +25

    Really? An 8.1? Saw it last night and yes the action was good, but its Melissa McCarthey being the same fat girl fall down role and the story is the same generic Spy story and yall are the same people that gave Interstellar a 6 -_-

    • @notabot835
      @notabot835 9 лет назад +4

      ***** Interstellar deserved a 6.

    • @MrChaseBlue
      @MrChaseBlue 9 лет назад +2

      ***** I loved Interstellar. It's a film that got pummeled bc of expectations and imo, will be revisited and become appreciated more as time goes on. Is it anywhere near as brilliant as 2001? No way, which is why it was so divisive.
      At the same time, both Paul Feig/Melissa McCarthy collaborations have hit. Are they great cinema? No, but they're great for a laugh. And imho, if Melissa McCarthy was a man, she and her films would not get as much hate and backlash as they do now.

      ***** Interstellar was way to long... in an unnecessary sort of way. The main concept was strong and creative but because went on for so long, for a long time you didn't know where the movie was going. If they cut like 20% of the movie it would have been fine.

    • @ZombieWerePrechaunPire
      @ZombieWerePrechaunPire 9 лет назад

      +Chris “Critical” O'Keeffe Spy was far more succesful at what that movie tried to do than what Interstellar tried to do. If I personally rated these movies, I would probably give Interstellar about a 6 and Spy about an 8.

  • @alphacause

    I guess I am one of the few people that doesn't find Melissa McCarthy all that funny. Given the stellar reviews of this film (it has a 94% rating on RottenTomatoes as of me writing this), I decided to give this film a try, despite my distaste for McCarthy. As with her other films, I found her more obnoxious than funny in "Spy". She seems to exploit the same shtick in every film, which basically involves her walking around clumsily and then falling in awkward and painful ways, so as to scream to the audience "hey look at me ,I am really fat, and when I fall down it is hysterical". Very few people can ride on the awkwardness of obesity for long, and have the joke not become old and boring. The one person who did it well was the late Chris Farley. Unfortunately, McCarthy doesn't have a fraction of the charm that Farley did, and that is why she comes across as more grating than endearing. Outside of the physical comedy, McCarthy just makes derisive comments, like she did in "Heat" and "Identity Thief", and those comments were more crude than clever. Despite the great reviews, I wouldn't recommend anyone see this film. If you want to laugh uncontrollably at a fat person who is out of their element, watch Chris Farley in "Beverly Hills Ninja". Despite the low reviews it received on Rotten Tomatoes, it was actually funny.

      What did you think of rose byrne, Jason statham and Jude law ?

    • @alphacause
      @alphacause 9 лет назад

      Daniel Findura Rose Byrne and Jason Statham were probably the best parts of the film. Jason Statham, in particular, with his monologues about his impossible secret agent exploits, and the fact that his macho posturing made him blind to the real dangers around him, was one of the few bright spots in this entire film.

    • @babablacksheepdog
      @babablacksheepdog 9 лет назад

      ***** She is actually really funny, but I find it sad that most of her work lately plays up her being overweight for laughs (I personally find it distasteful). I'm a big fan of Gilmore Girls, which wasn't a purely comedic show, it was equal parts comedy and drama, and I thought she was excellent in that. Her role was written in such a way that her size was not a factor. By that I mean that it did not take advantage of her weight for comedic purposes. I wish she would just go back to doing stuff like that.

    • @Philbert-s2c
      @Philbert-s2c 9 лет назад

      ***** I agree with you except I didn't like it when Farley did it either. There's nothing funny about a walking fat joke. John Candy was so funny precisely because he never tried to exploit his own weight for cheap laughs.

    Spy was pretty good, but I think it's a stretch to compare it to Edgar Wright's movies. Spy seems like the type of comedy where everything is thrown at the wall and the editors just see what sticks. Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End are so much more well-put together in my opinion.
