We’re in a bad era for movies. Audiences reject films that are challenging and provocative, and instead just want something “enjoyable”. Megalopolis might go too far, but the movie is screaming for us to challenge the way we look at cinema I also watched the movie in a near sold out imax showing, and my crowd at least was enjoying it.
I didn’t know until 2 days ago that The Penguin moved to Sundays? Dammit. It’s interesting how this movie is getting review bombed but Coppola probably directed the two greatest films ever made and he still gave us The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, and The Outsiders.
the whole call and response thing reminds me of Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451, with the interactive tv programmes that Montag's wife loved to watch so much
I saw it last night and I have to say it was CAMP. Would I say it’s a good movie? No. Did I love it and was I thoroughly entertained? Absolutely!!! The movie felt like it had a hat on a hat feeling. Like it was commenting on itself in real time. I really enjoyed it
Off subject, but Grace why no Ballerina trailer? It looks so good & even have Keanu in the trailer. It even explains how a many women may be smaller, & weaker than “big men” but need to learn how to adapt & cheat to make the playing field equal. Wow, Grace, what an AMAZING review. Your level of panoramic knowledge is exactly what is missing from the average review. So impressed! I found the film a beautiful fever dream of philosophy and politics and history and art.
I wish we had more risky original films made like Megalopolis & Babylon & I think the future of cinema looks bright next year with Mickey 17 & with Sinners!
How can you possibly spoil a film that's so convoluted ad chaotic? It's like spoiling a David Lynch film. If you can't wrap your head around what's assaulting your senses, how can you "spoil" anything? I respect FFC's ambition. I'm baffled by his vision and execution, but good on him for realizing his dream. Still, it feels to me as if Christopher Nolan dropped acid and made an Ayn Rand movie.
I am with you on this film. It is a cinematic experience. The language of film has never been showcased this thoroughly. It looked beautiful, and the messages were timely and timeless. It is no wonder it is tanking. audiences are Philistines.
I'm glad someone else appreciated it. Sadly, in the theatre I was in, only a few people were watching. At the end, there was only me watching. Everyone else had left.
It’s fascinating on how the different bad and good reactions for this movie totally echoes the reaction 2001 a space odyssey and also blade runner had from critics and most of all, audiences, when those movies came out and most of the critics were saying exactly the same things about, atmosphere, pacing, acting, lack of coherent plot, etc. So … I can bet this movie will totally be looked at in a different way twenty years from now. I haven’t seen it, but visually it reminds me of my all time favorite comics artist here in Europe, Schuiten, look for his graphic novels álbuns , it’s like Coppola read all of them too and tried to go for the same style.
I felt like I was watching a 3 hour art installation in museum. Not altogether a bad thing. Sigh...like TENET, I'll have to re-watch it a few more times. But no complaints, honestly.
Yes! Go see in the cinema. IMAX. 💯% Coppola isn’t making anything for streaming or DVD. That’s for students to watch at home later. Go. See. In. Cinemas. Totally the best film of the year. If the decade so far. And it’ll only climb from here. It IS wildly compellingly. Thanks Grace 🙏
I remember when she literally-I’m not making this up-said The Accountant was one of the best movies she’s ever seen. Really? It wasn’t _that_ good. Some of her movie opinions are genuinely baffling to me.
For some reason, it's not at the local AMC this weekend, where I'll be seeing Transformers. It's at the larger suburban AMC. The sci-fi angle interests me.
What a great review. I don't think I've appreciated a critic's viewpoint as much as yours since the great Roger Ebert passed. You're one of the best in the game Grace! Looking forward to watching this.
I went to watch this with high expectations because i didn't know anything about it i was going in blind and surely i 90% regret watch it to the end was almost like a new form of torture to the human mind. Also i was very surprised it was a full room when i went to watch it at the end it was less than half empty. Some cry and some feel asleep after halfway of the movie. It was interesting to see the reaction of the crowd that i enjoyed most of it all.
There are lots of interesting movie in cinemas this week. After watching The Substance, Maple Leaf Dreams, Bad Genius US remake etc I'd really like to watch Megalopolis next.
I hope no one gives you shit for this review. Your thoughts, beliefs and passions really came through when talking about it. You have convinced me to see it and I think it will be best seen in theaters. Great job.
People expect a reviewer to not review a movie because the movie is bad? 😂 I like a good “bad” movie review just as much as a good review for a movie I like. Besides how can a reviewer know it’s bad without seeing it?
I saw this last night and was confused, disgusted, lost, uplifted, amazed, and ultimately very fulfilled by the experience of it! That said, it’s a totally bonkers bananas huge swing that is NOT going to work for casual moviegoers lol
In my IMAX showing in Paramus the lights when on in that moment and I just saw someone standing near the front row. I don’t recall if they spoke, perhaps they did and I thought it was from the movie itself.
I just saw it. Kind of Bladerunner meets The Godfather. Over the top acting and dialogue and confusing at times but Coppola wrapped it up nicely in the end. Great video!
I LOVED this review full of independent thought. I was reminded of Roger Ebert's movie review essays that he wrote for the Chicago Sun-Times. So refreshing in a time of the binary, Rotten Tomatoes Yay or Nay system where everyone is afraid to appear like the odd duck out, compared to the hive mind of their peers on social media. FWIW, "2001: A Space Odyssey" also had a mixed reception, but it's my #1 sci-fi movie of all time. The Megalopolis experience as an art installation is an interesting approach. Grace's enthusiasm & passion for the project have me intrigued. FFC is a master - and I would totally be down to tune in for a later commentary / breakdown of the entire movie through its scenes or shot-by-shot.
Grace! I saw the film in Dallas for an early screening with q&a with Coppola and I felt similarly to you. It is DEFINITELY a work of high art, but the lack of preemptive awareness through marketing and corporate comms from Lionsgate really made the first experience at that screening confusing. That said I appreciated a wholly original film, and I enjoyed the experimental nature of it. It is bad, but I enjoyed the flaws it has for the pros it brings in originality and experimentation of film.
I was expecting to be disappointed by this movie but I really enjoyed it. I'm very happy for FFC as he finally got to make something he'd been refused financial backing for since the 80s. The performances are outstanding also. A wonderfully weird piece or art.
I'm extremely interested in seeing this movie. I don't care what anyone says about this movie; I think Megalopolis looks incredible, lol. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also seems incredibly odd (in the best possible way) and uniquely compelling.
You can't really say people are openly discussing topics these days. What they are doing is picking sides and throwing insults, insinuations, and talking points at each other to get reactions rather than exchanging opinions to achieve better understanding and compromise where everyone benefits from an open discussion.
As a man that loves, art, history and movies i have never had much interest in ancient Rome to this degree, i hated the Gladiator movie esoecially but there are many fascinated with the Empire and Time but dont think its solely men..Always thought Ancient Egypt more interesting...I will watch this movie and hope i like it as i rarely agree with Critics but ur positive Review is a rare one on this film Grace...
Watching "Megalopolis" is like watching a potential sequel of "The Batman" directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Now THIS IS CINEMA for a superhero movie Adam Driver shows how charismatic he is as a Bruce Wayne-like idealistic, intellectual, pedigree "superhero" character in Megalopolis. Hope James Gunn would cast Adam Driver to be Bruce Wayne/Batman in "The Brave and the Bold".
100% agree with Grace on this review its one of the best of the year and one of the most interesting. I hope it can have more appreciation years down the line.
Yeah of course Grace, this is cinematic tour de force, great art in the same museum with other timeless pieces like Catwoman and Battlefield Earth 👏🏼 👏🏼 Bravissimo
We got the person asking the question in Jersey for the IMAX early access screening at Garden State Plaza. Very surreal moment. Overall movie is juggling a lot but I enjoyed it as an abstract piece of art.
This movie was such a slog. Poor narrative, half baked ideas, pretention masquerading as philosophical break through. Did get a kick out of a character getting killed by the tiniest bow and arrow in the world.
The massage was very easy to understand. Delivered with the nuances of an elementary school play, the messages exposed Coppola’s intellectual naïveté. He ain’t no Puzo.
It's rare that one goes to the cinema to simply enjoy the experience of Art. It would seem this one took all the risks. Hope it pays off. I can't wait to see this.
I was interested when I heard Hollywood types were bashing a year or two ago. I saw trailer in theater and it looked great. I did even know it was in theaters yet! No commercials anywhere. I can't wait to see it!
Once again, I'm afraid it's the people who keep btchng about "the same regurgitated remakes and franchise sequels" that are gonna complain that "no one asked for this".
I see where you’re coming from, but the words I’d use are “unabashed” and “unafraid”. Perhaps “uncompromising”, but I feel it leaves plenty of space for interpretation so that word feels misleading. I just thought where most movies these days try to hide all their messaging, often clumsily and unsuccessfully, MEGALOPLIIS decided to just very transparently pose its questions, but allow the audience the freedom to contemplate them and arrive at our own conclusions. Even while the film has a very strong point of view. I really love it.
It's definitely preachy, but people who like the movie aren't likely to say that, and people who hate it might not even consider preachiness a flaw and are also not likely to mention it.
Never know what grace is going to say lol

I want to see it again, and I’ve already seen it twice this week!
I’m headed back for second time this week.
I am so glad I’m not the only one who loved this movie😭
Interesting is not the same thing as enjoyable
Or it describes a type of enjoyable - enjoyable for the people who enjoy novelty
and not every good movie is an enjoyable experience 🤷🏻♂️
We’re in a bad era for movies. Audiences reject films that are challenging and provocative, and instead just want something “enjoyable”. Megalopolis might go too far, but the movie is screaming for us to challenge the way we look at cinema
I also watched the movie in a near sold out imax showing, and my crowd at least was enjoying it.
@@benjihudson2768 I feel like pretentiousness or it's modern form, virtue-signaling, is becoming box office kryptonite more than ever
@benjihudson2768 have u seen the movie? I have, and this movie is just incoherent. Weird direction in acting, especially with Driver.
Thanks for the review as always Grace. Love all of them ❤
I didn’t know until 2 days ago that The Penguin moved to Sundays? Dammit. It’s interesting how this movie is getting review bombed but Coppola probably directed the two greatest films ever made and he still gave us The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, and The Outsiders.
the whole call and response thing reminds me of Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451, with the interactive tv programmes that Montag's wife loved to watch so much
Thank you, Grace. I f****n loved this movie. Putting it more as a work of art is spot on. History will be kind to this movie.
I’d like to be challenged by a movie without being grossed out, bored or feel awkward. Maybe this movie is for me.
Serious question here, because I'm curious.. Grace, what did your friends think of the movie? Are they classic film fans as well?
I saw it last night and I have to say it was CAMP. Would I say it’s a good movie? No. Did I love it and was I thoroughly entertained? Absolutely!!! The movie felt like it had a hat on a hat feeling. Like it was commenting on itself in real time. I really enjoyed it
The pick up my hat scene was hilarious, especially upon further thinking about it lol.
Off subject, but Grace why no Ballerina trailer? It looks so good & even have Keanu in the trailer. It even explains how a many women may be smaller, & weaker than “big men” but need to learn how to adapt & cheat to make the playing field equal. I have to say, I think it might be a well written, good action film.
If movie tickets and gas was cheaper, I would go out of my way to see this "challenge".
Discount Tuesdays
@@charlesw4727 Literally costs me $7 to see a movie in the theatres, every time I want to see it. People cope so hard about it costing too much. There's NO CHEAPER WAY TO WATCH A MOVIE unless you pirate.
😳 This video made me book a ticket for an iMax viewing this weekend. I’m excited!!! Thank you! 😊
I am with you on this film.
It is a cinematic experience.
The language of film has never been
showcased this thoroughly.
It looked beautiful,
and the messages were timely and timeless.
It is no wonder it is tanking.
audiences are Philistines.
Fritz Lang.
We Stan grace!!
I'm glad someone else appreciated it. Sadly, in the theatre I was in, only a few people were watching. At the end, there was only me watching. Everyone else had left.
It's really remarkable how polarizing it is.
@@sharifmansour9678 not very polarizing, those who enjoy this are the small minority.
i have never been in a movie where people left, let alone in droves. This makes me so curious how this is even possible.
Really appreciate your deep dive and analysis into this film I think I’m gonna see it!! Major work of Art?! I’m in!!!
This movies makes me wonder what drivers Mr.fantastic would have looked like. A much more aspired casting
No Disrespect but a lot of movies you Didn't like, I Liked. Keep keeping me informed tho.
I felt like I was watching a 3 hour art installation in museum. Not altogether a bad thing. Sigh...like TENET, I'll have to re-watch it a few more times. But no complaints, honestly.
Oh, I’m so glad your review is finally up!!! Thanks, Grace!!❤
Can always count on Grace to go against the grain and come out with a great review. Nice you're one of the only critics to get this. My crush.
Grace you like a lot of bad movies😂😂
She hated oppenheimer
@@alfredoregalado3965 understandable
@@alfredoregalado3965 Yes, she also hates a lot of good movies. So it checks out.
I'm actually surprised she likes this, as she tends to get confused with movies like this with odd narrative structure.
Thanks for adding some context I haven’t seen yet in other reviews!
“Madison Square Garden, now I think about it, IS a bit like the Colosseum” … well done.
Dammit Grace! I was gonna miss this show. You changed my mind!! ❤️
I’m seeing it now Grace. Hyped!
nice review excited to watch
What a great review. I don't think I've appreciated a critic's viewpoint as much as yours since the great Roger Ebert passed. You're one of the best in the game Grace! Looking forward to watching this.
Such a nice thing to say - I'm honored you feel that way!
I like the idea of having it in an exhibit room of a art museum with showings.
I was going to watch this last night but decided to watch Football instead. I think I made the right choice
Why?
You did.
that's sad
There are lots of interesting movie in cinemas this week.
After watching The Substance, Maple Leaf Dreams, Bad Genius US remake etc
I'd really like to watch Megalopolis next.
I hope no one gives you shit for this review. Your thoughts, beliefs and passions really came through when talking about it. You have convinced me to see it and I think it will be best seen in theaters. Great job.
I’m watching this before I head out to see it and I always love to hear your thoughts on films! I’m so excited!! 😃
looking forward to watching this modern fable. love Adam Driver.
The trailers fascinated me - Definitely checking it out (getting baked as a pie beforehand tho)
I mean honestly, if more films like this existed we wouldn't need drugs. It's a psychedelic experience by itself.
This is her best review in a while.
Saw it last night, I was impressed..
I’m happy you liked it. Going to the late show tonight. I’m intrigued by it. I kind of like those kinds of movies where you just kinda roll with it.
Grace's comments about other epic films and other films in general compel me to see this film no matter what the critics have said.
Coppola’s choice of DP and Music Score creator was interesting after I researched their works. I wondered why he chose them.
I think people breaking this movie down scene by scene and showing the movies coppola is referencing will be amazing
You're gonna love it.
This film was like a spin off of spy kids but with weirder green sceen, no way is Megalopolis a real movie”
The concept behind the staff member interviewing Adam Driver from outside the film is a part of the expanded cinema movement.
I thought the trailer has look intriguing- so pumped Grace give it an in depth review, definitely will be watching!
Watching "Megalopolis" is like watching a potential sequel of "The Batman" directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
Now THIS IS CINEMA for a superhero movie
Adam Driver shows how charismatic he is as a Bruce Wayne-like idealistic, intellectual, pedigree "superhero" character in Megalopolis.
Hope James Gunn would cast Adam Driver to be Bruce Wayne/Batman in "The Brave and the Bold".
100% agree with Grace on this review its one of the best of the year and one of the most interesting. I hope it can have more appreciation years down the line.
I thought Barbie was a work of art too which should belong in museums. I am sure I will like Megalopolis and this feels to me like a historical event.
It is.
Thanks for the great review, Grace.
Hahaha I couldn't agree more with a comment. The tiny bow and arrow scene was an absurd delight.
The bow and arrow was so camp
The massage was very easy to understand. Delivered with the nuances of an elementary school play, the messages exposed Coppola’s intellectual naïveté. He ain’t no Puzo.
It's rare that one goes to the cinema to simply enjoy the experience of Art. It would seem this one took all the risks. Hope it pays off.
I can't wait to see this.
I was interested when I heard Hollywood types were bashing a year or two ago. I saw trailer in theater and it looked great. I did even know it was in theaters yet! No commercials anywhere. I can't wait to see it!
Once again, I'm afraid it's the people who keep btchng about "the same regurgitated remakes and franchise sequels" that are gonna complain that "no one asked for this".
great point
No one seems to mention it's preachy through and through. And paternalistic. That said, I'm eager to see it a second time. I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
