If the movie really is as crazy as everybody says, then I want the freedom to take breaks during the movie if I need them, and in the comfort of my own home. Can’t quite bring myself to watching it at the theater.
Coppola has been making these self financed films for years. Tetro, Twixt. That kind of thing. Megalopolis just looks like a bigger budget version. But, I'm a little sceptical of all budget claims. There have been so many CGI heavy megaflops recently, you've got to question if films really are costing as much as is claimed or if it's more a case of studios/producers paying themselves huge salaries?
Your review of this movie (and specifically citing how messy and convoluted the narrative is) reminds me of another movie which I believe you ought to do a Bad Movie Roast for: Southland Tales!!! I literally just today discovered your Spill review for it, and it seems like Korey has strong opinions about it (as do I), so I think it'd be perfect for a roast! 😁👍🏼
The time stopping does served a purpose. It's his artistic views, not a superpower, because everyone else wasn't effected by it. And that moment when he finally can share that lonely view with somebody (Julianne), it's one of the most beautiful scene all year for me! Caesar it's a struggling artist.
The fact that they could not call this for the BS that it is just shows that awards and critical praise mean absolutely nothing. FFC being handled with kid gloves is a travesty. Especially with the Jeepers fiasco. A Neil Breen masterpiece.
There is a difference. Him and George Lucas aren’t the aging filmmakers like Spielberg and Scorsese. It is okay. I love them all but it is way past Coppola’s prime time.
This movie is the artistic equivalent on The Chubby Bunny Challenge. It has so much it wants to say that it physically chokes on its meaning, symbolism, metaphors, and what not.
This movie feels like it was written by a pretentious 14 year old who took a writing class in high school. It's trying to be deep yet everything is extremely shallow and see through. The dialogue is trying to be grandiose and obscure but it just sounds like incoherent ramblings of someone who thinks they are smart. Terrible.
I have a couple of ideas on how this movie could have been just slightly better story wise. 1) Show Adam Driver's character as a child, either in a flashback or as the opening scene. Maybe have him play with blocks or Legos or something, maybe drawing buildings. Have him walk down the city of New Rome and look up at awe at the skyscrapers in wonder. 2) Show him as a child or teenager first gaining recognition of his time-space talents. Maybe his mother explains to him that this is a special talent that is passed down through the family (when watching the movie I wasn't sure how these powers came about, whether it was from the megalon or magic or what). Then have him stop time and have him take a long walk through the city of New Rome. He can take a hard look at the city, including its poverty in the bad neighborhoods and other issues. I feel that two scenes like these would have added to his character and motivation more.
This movie is just a director having a political or social commentary he wants to spew (positive or not), but doesn't have a vehicle to convey it. So he conjures up a movie to be the vehicle because he thinks the commentary is important enough that it should be heard by many. The problem is he has No Story to deliver it in. The movie is a jumbled collection of quotables & visuals, none of which will connect the dots for the vast majority of viewers. Suggestion: The main character is Caesar, a genius, visionary architect. Maybe if they would've shown him as a child struggling with his vast intellect & his inability to connect with ppl & particularly his mother, maybe that would've made me as the viewer care about him as person & therefore want to follow his life & it's trials throughout the movie. Without it he just feels like a device standing on a soapbox telling the audience how good the world could be if we just open our minds.
4:26 *The Sopranos* took years to get off the ground, but when it did… 👏🏾🍿🎬 *Megalopolis* was visually striking & thematically inconsistent; I couldn’t get into it!
What is going on with these legendary directors lately john woo Francis Ford coopla etc. The magic just left these guy's. Can't get that thrill of directing anymore. Watch your back Martin scorcese And tim Burton.

A $120MM - $200MM budget is the most self owned FU in history. Next time just rent a billboard on Hollywood Blvd or one of those planes that writes smoke messages in the sky… or fk it, splurge and rent BOTH 😂
Lionsgate is becoming THE WORST STUDIO IN HOLLYWOOD PERIOD! They made movies BOX OFFICE BOMBS in 2024. I think if A24 taking over that studio, I'll be a Christmas miracle. Lionsgate's worst year yet.
This isn't really anything to do with Lions gate other than FFC paid them to distribute the movie. They will be just about the only people who will make a profit from this.
Regarding why Cesar doesn’t just stop time and make everything go his way, it’s most likely that he is trying to still play by some semblance of “the rules.” Coppola is really digging deep into a number of films from the cinemas that put concept and ideas over a general narrative. There may be a hint in Cesar’s talk of “we are in need of a great debate about the future.” The idea that a lot of people are talking, but most of humanity is focused on what they can grasp in the present, whereas opening up the mind to consider the future is not something many will do.
I really appreciate the nuanced take, I feel like everyone is dog piling him. He has proven he is a good film maker, he is just too old. It’s sad really. I feel bad for the actors as well

Well, his biggest flop was a Titanic movie competing with Camerons Titanic, with Zeta Jones as leading lady.
Terrible.
120 million?! Must be a record-breaker.
if you didnt like this movie then you should just go back to the cluuuuuub
I sadly got that joke.
Martin’s face after he found out how much the movie cost 💀💀💀
Makes u wonder how many times a studio has saved a film or an album from being the mess that is an artist's vision?
I wasn’t on board until someone said this is basically a Neil Breen film with a bigger budget
Suggestion:
The main character is Caesar, a genius, visionary architect.
Hold on a minute, this isn’t Megalopolis at all…
This is just…
GRAND METROPOLIS!!!
One of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. A total masterpiece.
Let's see what the 2nd of this movie Niggalopolis looks like
Francis Ford Coppola wanted some of that Tyler Perry attention, 😂😂😂
4:26 *The Sopranos* took years to get off the ground, but when it did… 👏🏾🍿🎬 *Megalopolis* was visually striking & thematically inconsistent; I couldn’t get into it!
What is going on with these legendary directors lately john woo
Francis Ford coopla etc.
The magic just left these guy's.
Can't get that thrill of directing anymore.
Watch your back Martin scorcese
And tim Burton.
I think it's because they reach a point where they no longer care about the audience. They feel like they're established enough to create their vision without interference and no one will tell him no. Even Scorcese has become overindulgent. That's why all his movies recently are so drawn out
@@fangal12 thanks.
@@fangal12the worst thing that can happen to a director is to allow themselves to be surrounded by “Yes Men.”
Add Ridley Scott. This is why Tarantino said he's going to hang it up before his skills deteriorate.
@@izzo2998 thanks.
This film is a FU I hate to say it
A $120MM - $200MM budget is the most self owned FU in history.
@@PJVids83Disney is a larger company than lionsgate. They can afford the losses, lionsgate can't
@@kityhawk2000think again…
This is what happens when you have to many yes men around you
Regarding why Cesar doesn’t just stop time and make everything go his way, it’s most likely that he is trying to still play by some semblance of “the rules.”
Coppola is really digging deep into a number of films from the cinemas that put concept and ideas over a general narrative.
I feel bad for the actors as well
Totally agree that this felt like a massive off off broadway play!!
This is why you have somebody else read your script and have the attitude of I'm cutting things out of my script
I'm sorry. I think I misheard. Did he say 420 million dollar budget?
Taking so many years to create a film to come out in the wrong time. The movie came out during the time when people are cautious with money.
This was such a Gorgeous Film with an Amazing Theme! Loved This Film it’s Very Golden Age Hollywood Style with Its Double-Exposures and Exploration of Civilization.
Every single actor gave a terrible performance so I can’t put the blame on Aubrey Plaza but I thought she gave the worst performance I’ve seen in years.
Everyone felt like they were in a different movie talking past each other.
Vought, Shia, plaza, Hoffman, Adam driver, all god F’ing awful.
