At the end of the day the ref gave her more opportunities than normal--ref even told Coco she granted Laura more time after the long rally. Seriously, I don't think so. The umpire did a bad job, no doubt about that, but as Siegemund herself said, she's used to getting her violations, she doesn't care. She would still wait for the shotclock to run down and play slow. She still did it after she got her first violation (way too late) in this match as well. She does it on purpose and it's not the only thing she often does to distract her opponent. It's just almost funny how she's complaining now that for once she got called out on her subtle unfair behavior and especially because the audience didn't respect her. Jeez, she's on the tour long enough to know what it is like to play an opponent with a homecrowd behind their back. Sure it's tough, but throwing a tantrum like a defiant 5 year old will certainly not earn her any respect either.

Ok Ok Ok. Enough is enough. Tennis player here to explain tennis etiquette. As a receiver, you’re supposed to play to the pace of the server. She wasn’t doing this. When you repeatedly slow down the pace by not being ready, go for a bathroom break, or call for a fake medical timeout (which players abuse all the time) you can throw off the momentum of your opponent. THIS NEVER HAPPENS WHEN PLAYERS ARE WINNING. Regardless of her intentions, shes 100% guilty of this. If Coco is standing at the baseline ready to serve, she shouldn’t be twiddling her strings with her back to her or at her towel. And 9/10 it’s intentional. Real tennis players know this. It starts in the juniors with 9 year olds lol. Players are there to WIN at all costs. In the same spirit, it’s considered poor tennis etiquette to cheer after a player makes an error ie in between serves. Coco is an American favorite. Siegemund abused the rules in New York City and the crowd let her have it. It’s the same reason she had warnings and a point deducted. This isn’t one sided. She had to deal with the response after she was sprinkling a little bit of gamesmanship into the mix against the crowd favorite. Bad idea. Simple as that.

There's no such thing as sympathy in professional sports. People are playing to win no matter what, but you gotta adhere to the rules. She could complain about how disrespectful the crowd was, but when you constantly slow the game down at the expense of the server, not only is that disrespectful to the opponent, but it's disrespectful to the fans. As a "performer" you must NEVER keep your audience waiting otherwise they will get annoyed and express themselves accordingly. I dont feel sorry for her. She just gotta take the L and move in.

I watched Laura and her partner beat Coco and Jess at Wimbledon this year in doubles. While I empathize that the crowd had extremely poor etiquette, Laura is known for her gamesmanship (employing tactics to play mental games with her opponents). It was clear during her doubles match against Coco at Wimbledon, and there were times during her singles match here that she was repeatedly being slow to try to get under Coco's skin on her serve. I understand that the crowd upset her, but those of us that are familiar with her playing style know that she frequently uses gamesmanship to try to get the upper hand. I think the crowd was 100% valid in putting pressure on the umpire to issue a time violation. These umpires need to enforce the rules evenly across the board!

Tennis shouldn't be about such underhanded mind games. That's not gamesmanship, or at least it's not respectable gamesmanship. Tennis is about what you do when you hit the ball. @@daaznriceballs Sure, they want to get the psychological advantage. But there are respectable ways to do it, and there are unrespectable ways to do it. Laura was doing it in an unrespectable way, and that's why the crowd rightly turned on her. She deserved all those boos. And then she had the audacity to be upset at the crowd for being upset at her. You reap what you sow.
Of course, what is acceptable player behavior varies from sport to sport. For example, in basketball trash talk is perfectly acceptable. But in other sports it's not, and it's considered inappropriate and disrespectful behavior. Laura's delay tactics fall into the category of generally poor behavior, which is why the crowd got angry at her, which is why Coco got angry at her and which is why the ref penalized her.
