    Good looking engine. Seems to run very well. Great video

    Another way to learn more about the building of model engines is to peruse old issues of the British magazine MODEL ENGINEER.
    It is through this magazine that I became interested in engine and other model construction in 1971.
    The magazine contains many construction articles with detailed "how-to" instructions as to setups and machining.
    I certainly found it inspirational for many of my endeavours.

    Nice demonstrating
    Well done finishing
    And really enjoyed
    Good luck

    I have designed and built a miniature three cylinder single acting steam engine with a side eccentric shaft that I use in miniature model steam boats. It is a self starting engine but I not been able to make it reversing due to the small size i.e. (1/4" bore X 1/4" stroke). I think the Maudsley could be made to work on my engine. Thank you for showing and explaining is such detail.

    @BasementEngineer Thanks! I am looking for clubs at the moment :) I really want to do this.

    I really wish I could make that :/. It is so beautiful, awesome job. What tools to make these machines would you recommend for a beginner?

    @BasementEngineer  12 лет назад

    @questionablesight Thanks!
    A lathe, say 7" swing or greater; a small vertical milling machine.
    And, of course, the skills to use them.
    For a first steam engine I would suggest a small oscillating engine so that you may acquire some skills in the use of machine tools. It would help you immensely if you could take a machinist's trade course at a local community college or high school.
    Alternatively join a local model engineering club and ask a willing member to help you.

    Hello, I am trying to make a Maudslay reversing gear for my miniature 3 cylinder steam engine. I have been watching your video, it is the only example of a Maudslay that I can find. I am confused by the degrees of rotation between the crankshaft and valve shaft. It appears to be about 90 degrees, or less. Doesn't the valve shaft have to rotate 180 degrees with respect to the crankshaft to reverse the engine?

      To tell the truth, I never thought much about this at the design phase of this project. I built this engine from basic design sketches and then determined, experimentally, the amount of rotation required for the eccentric shaft. Then I made the brass button to provide for the correct amount of rotation. Yes it is possible to determine this prior to construction, especially with CAD drawings that permit the running of the CAD model, programs such as FUSION 360. w

      @@BasementEngineer Hello, nice to hear from you. I am very impressed by your engine. I did install Maudslay reversing gears on two of my miniature three cylinder engines. One with two gears and one with four gears. There are videos of them on my RUclips channel at LeslieProper . I would be interested in your comment on them.

    Wow. How much would it cost to build a larger steam engine like this one?

    • @BasementEngineer
      @BasementEngineer  10 лет назад

      That's like asking: "How long is a string." How big of an engine do you want, eg. 2x, 3x, 4x, or more the size of the model here.
      Or, what do you wish to power or drive with this engine?
      Bear in mind that once the size exceeds 2x the model's size, castings would have to be obtained.
      Where do you live? w

    interesting, never heard of the Maudsley.

      It's pretty straightforward, but doesn't allow continuously variable cutoff. On the other hand, it doesn't need an expansion link with sliding die block either, and the valves are conveniently driven directly off the eccentrics. It does require gears, however.

      i am building a small marine engine and just made the expansion links. they are not that hard. What is the valve gear that the dutch use

    I am building a full scaled solar thermal car. I am using a 2 by 8 meter curved mirror to focus sun on a pipe. I need a steam engine that can product between 1000 to 3000 watts. I am building a tesla turbine but I also want to test piston steam engines and Stirling engines. I am looking for an inexpensive engine that is easy to fix and is very efficient and light weight.
    I and designing and building the solar thermal car in sunny La Paz Mexico. I have over 30 build videos on my youtube channel.
    Also the German magazine FOCUS is writing an article on my solar car.
