many people do not realize the enormously broad musical reach, writing and musical talent, and stellar integrity of Los Lobos...one of the very best bands in the WORLD.
David Hidalgo sounds so much like Marvin Gaye even more than my late father Pete Sr did,. He sang like Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin,, Smokey Robinson and Al Green. Lol.
I got to meet David Hidalgo a few weeks back when I was working backstage. He was nice enough to take a photo with me. These guys (Los Lobos) are incredible live. Very underrated band.
Wonderful song. Iam getting totally sentimental. Los Lobos are phantastic musicians. I` ve seen them in 87 in Turnhout/Belgium and it was the best concert i have ever seen.... Thanks soo much!!
I love seeing these comments from 12 years ago! The road warriors - just another band from east LA - have stuck it out... Y'all can relax about the wolves being recognized... Here in the future, we get it... and LL is still killing it.
I've seen these guys three times in my life. Right after La Bamba came out they played at our High School on the flats. That was really cool...I'm talking Belmont High and they went to Garfield. Sometime around 1984 or so. Then I caught them at a Street Scene in San Diego around 1986...again in 1997 or so at the Greek Theatre. The place was packed! They were as great as usual. If you haven't seen them live it's a must!
i always hang out with them. their like my spanish step family. david always sings this for my mom. i get to play with them live sometimes in FLA or NY...im zack i love them. their my family and theirs alwasys tthere for me
Seen these guys three times in my life. Once as a kid, even though these guys went to Garfield High in East LA they played at our High School back around 82 Belmont High School. One of our music teacher had contacts with their camp. Then I saw them in the Gas Lamp District in San Diego at The Street Scene in 86 and at the Greek theatre in Hollywood in early 2k. I need another fix soon! Stay up guys. The Pride of the Neighborhood!
Great track. Always been a shame that LL have been saddled with the band that did "La Bamba" - simply unrepresentative of what a phenomenal musical talent these guys have.
for too long I had no clue that Los Lobos had the musical talent and soul that they do. God this band is tight and this song proves again, they can play anything!
aagcv, They did, in fact, play this WHILE the riots were going on. They had a show at Tipitina's in New Orleans, during the Jazz Festival, as the riots were going on. They did a, at least, 20 minute version of the song. Great night, pre airconditioning, in one of the hottest rooms (on many levels, heh) in the country. Awesome show.
Agreed. Davud nailed the vocals, which is very hard when you are singing a Marvin Gaye song. And the rest of the band plays it perfect. Well done you ol' wolves.
Mother, mother There's too many of you crying Brother, brother, brother There's far too many of you dying You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today - Ya Father, father We don't need to escalate You see, war is not the answer For only love can conquer hate You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today Picket lines and picket signs Don't punish me with brutality Talk to me, so you can see Oh, what's going on What's going on Ya, what's going on Ah, what's going on In the mean time Right on, baby Right on Right on Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong Oh, but who are they to judge us Simply because our hair is long Oh, you know we've got to find a way To bring some understanding here today Oh Picket lines and picket signs Don't punish me with brutality Talk to me So you can see What's going on Ya, what's going on Tell me what's going on I'll tell you what's going on - Uh Right on baby Right on baby
As a guitar player, I always loved this song. Yes, it is a Marvin Gaye song, but for some reason this arrangement speaks to me. So, for guitar players out there that would like to strum along with Los Lobos, this should get you close ..... Intro: | [Emaj7] | [Emaj7] | [Emaj7] | [Emaj7] | Verse 1: [Emaj7]Mother, mother, there's too many [C#m]of you crying [C#m7] [C#m] [Emaj7]Brother, brother, brother, there's far too many [C#m]of you dying [C#m7] [C#m] You know you've got to [F#m7]find a way, to bring some [B]lovin' here today [B7] Verse 2: [Emaj7]Father, father, we don't need to [C#m]escalate [C#m7] [C#m] 'Cause [Emaj7]war is not the answer, for only love can [C#m]conquer hate [C#m7] [C#m] You know you've got to [F#m7]find a way, to bring some under[B]standin' here today [B7] Pre-chorus: [F#m7]Picket signs, and [B]picket lines Don't [F#m7]come to me, with bru[B]tality Just [F#m7]talk to me, and [B]you will see Chorus: Oh what's [Emaj7]goin' on, what's [C#m]goin' on What's [Emaj7]goin' on, yeah, what's [C#m]goin' on Solo: | [Am7] | [Am7] | [Am7] | [Am7] [Bm7] | ....... saxophone | [Am7] | [Am7] | [Am7] | [Am7] | | [B7] | [B7] | [B7] | [B7] | Verse 3: [Emaj7]Father, father, everybody [C#m]thinks we're wrong [C#m7] [C#m] But [Emaj7]who are they to judge us, simply 'cause our [C#m]hair is long [C#m7] [C#m] You know you've got to [F#m7]find a way, to bring some under[B]standin' here today [B7] Pre-chorus: Chorus: What's [Emaj7]going on, yeah, what's [C#m]going on Ah, [Emaj7]what's goin' on, I'll tell you what's [C#m]goin' on Outro: | [Am7] | [Am7] | [Am7] | [Am7] [Bm7] | ....... saxophone | [Am7] | [Am7] | [Am7] | [Am7] | | [B7] | [B7] | [B7] | [B7] |....... | [Am7] |
Try Emaj7 for the E .... Try F#m7 for the A .... Try Bsus9 (A/B)>B13 for the B7 ... Am7 with Bm7 as a passing chord for the Solo .... there is some other stuff "Going On" too .
@therealistjm Wrong. It's called What's Goin' On. Just type the name "Marvin Gaye" in the search bar above and accompany that with "What's Goin' On," and BINGO!....Click on one of the posts, and you'll find that it's the same song.

I met David Hidalgo and Louie Perez at San Francisco Airport. They were so nice to me. This is a great version of the song. Thank you so much !!!!!
David Hidalgo just transcends - what a beautiful take on a great great song. Marvin would have been proud.
I couldn't agree more. He's one of my singing idols.
Bass line is superb. Really makes this tunes groove.

I've seen many groups in 60 yrs. but for consistently great concerts Los Lobos is truly exceptional. I will see them again in concert this month .

@gatheringofthevibes LL are so good - period! The older they get, the better they are, too.
i always hang out with them. their like my spanish step family. david always sings this for my mom. i get to play with them live sometimes in FLA or NY...im zack i love them. their my family and theirs alwasys tthere for me
David's voice captures the despair so painfully beautifully. What a great band.

One of America's great bands.
There's only one Marvin. But Los Lobos did this song justice. Beautiful version.
for too long I had no clue that Los Lobos had the musical talent and soul that they do. God this band is tight and this song proves again, they can play anything!

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Ya
Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on
In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on
Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
Right on baby
Right on baby

Actually, that was a Richie Valens tune, LL only covered it albeit, quite finely.
Actually, the great Marvin Gaye wrote it... It's a classic !
