“We shot ‘What’s Going On' in Detroit and Flint Michigan, we wanted a place that resonates with the song and the history of Motown, while also remaining relevant to the sociopolitical issues in the music video.
The music video took four days to shoot, but I travelled to Michigan a couple weeks early to find the right people. It was very important for us to find real people that resonated with the stories, rather than casting actors. We wanted the history of the song and the communities we filmed in to come through in our video. For example, Steve Smith, who plays the blind man in our music video, actually worked for Motown when ‘What’s Going On’ was originally recorded. The church we filmed in was one of the first establishments to set up a water station for the Flint community - they would hand out clean water and raise awareness on the ongoing crisis within the community.
In addition to Steve Smith, we had the opportunity to feature other influential community figures in our music video, including Karen Weaver, the mayor of Flint, and pivotal activists that have been involved in the Flint Water Crisis for many years. One such activist in our music video is named Ariana Hawk, who, along with her young son, was featured on the cover of Time Magazine during the height of the water crisis. She ended up moving from Flint, only to return in order to continue the fight for her community. To this day, the Flint Water Crisis has yet to be resolved, and Ariana continues to be a strong activist in the movement.
"The point is that this is a historic song for an important moment in history, and what’s beautiful is that it’s message is timeless and universal. It’s about human emotions, human relationships, and a coming together. My hope is that our music video will remind people to continue asking the question Marvin Gaye asked in 1971.” - Director: Savanah Leaf

As a footnote. The gentelman that plays the blind man in this video is one of the original recording engineers for the "Whats going on" album in 1971. His name is Steve Smith and he's my uncle.

That's true. Berry and the label's executives didn't want Marvin to record a protest album due to them fearing that it would damage his sex symbol image. Marvin didn't like being a sex symbol and stood his ground. Berry came to his senses and released the single and album which became a classic but earned the label millions of dollars. Marvin also got the opportunity to continue writing and producing his own music

I wish this song would have a massive revival---and that people would truly listen to the words---understand the message---feel the love and intention, and demand an end to the world's wars, poverty, racism, hate, division, and judgment,. The world is so rich in so many ways, yet so impoverished in the ways of love and compassion. Truly heartbreaking.
Marvin, I could listen to you all day long.

So I put in Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run, but after a couple songs it just wasn’t the vibe I was looking for. Then I put in What’s Going On and suddenly the whole place was floating on air.

At the time that the artist Marvin Gaye wrote the song, he felt the need to express the pain and tears that North American society suffers as a result of racial intolerance, police violence, carrying weapons, drug use and selfishness. He experienced firsthand the humiliations, physical abuse, psychological violence of his father. He was an artist with great sensitivity.

This song was written and released by Marvin Gaye in 1971. That was 51 years ago. It topped the charts in almost every genre of music and around the world.
Originally, it was written about a Vietnam vet coming home from war, but as the video shows, the narrative is still the same, but the sentiment still applies to so many people no matter who you are, TODAY!
I miss this singer and man every time I hear his songs and those songs written about him. This video deserves more than 86k in likes.
Thank you to the wonderful keepers of Marvin Gaye's music for putting this video together.

Ooh, you opened the Pandora's Box. True that! It's more tragic than amazing, though for anyone who believes most people are good, it should be amazingly sorrowful we have not beat all the Injustice, social and environmental, back into the deep reaches of the cave. Marvin spoke to us back then when we were very worried about the future and we've been trying ever since to not allow all that crap to carry through to now. Some things have improved, and we know so much more now, but other things have not improved or become worse even though we know better.

I was a young man when this album came out. " Whats Going On " I was in the Preverbal "Shit hole" at the time. A place called Viet Nam. Marvin was with me, not the man. But his music. I always felt at that time, as well as today. This was one of the most prophetic albums ever written. This is one of the songs from my favorite singer of all time. Marvin Gaye and my favorite album of all time "What's going on" This entire album is amazing from start to finish. On vinyl, it was a rarity, One of those rare albums you dropped the needle on, sit back and you could listen to every song from start to finish on side "A" without ever having to get up to pick up the needle and skip a song. Side "B" had some awesome tracks on it as well.
The History behind this album was as equally as amazing as the Man himself. Mr. Marvin Gaye. In short, This album was Marvin's "Baby".
Motown at the time, felt it was to out there ( Extemporaneous ) too political and it would not sell . Marvin wanted it produced. it was very near and dear to him. This led to Marvin leaving Motown.
if you listen to side "B" 2nd track "Flying High In The Friendly Skies " In this song, listen closely, it is Marvin Gaye, describing his personal battle and experiences of his addiction to Heroin. Amazingly put to music and words. The album has other Great Songs. "Mercy Mercy me, "God is love".
This album is truly an insightful walk through the mind and soul of the man, the artist, we all know as Marvin Gaye.
Barry Gordy Believed it was too out there this album would not sell. Marvin left Motown and the album was produced and the rest, is music history.
Marvin, you are truly remembered. Thank you Marvin, for being there for me. As I, a young man of 18, walked through the valleys, of the shadow of death.
Rescate En Pace. Mr. Marvin Gaye.

Motown ended up produced and releasing "What's Going On", but the execs at Motown saw it as just a way to keep one of their biggest stars happy, so he would keep producing music for them. They expected it to be a total flop. Barry Gordy was leaving town, so he told another exec at Motown to tell Marvin that he had to redo the record, and that it wouldn't sell as it was. The other exec decided to release it anyway, but also expected it to flop. They were shocked at how well "What's Going On" did, and they never encouraged Gaye or their other singers to produce more music like it, even though it had great sales.
Although "I heard it through the grapevine" is far more famous, I consider "What's Going On" to be one of the greatest albums ever created, but its message was far too subversive for the record companies. I don't think I ever heard it being played on the radio when I was a child in the 70s and 80s. I only recently discovered it on RUclips. I often wonder what else Marvin Gaye could have produced if he hadn't been so hooked on drugs and had more stability in his life. We would probably think about him in the same way that we think about John Lennon.

The sign of a prophet is a poet who writes about what he sees in his heart and soul about the future of humanity. Beloved Marvin was our prophet during that time. His voice is still relevant to people because he spoke about their issues with life, not just his love life or romance. There were many prophets in the music of the 70s. WE need to return to that to open the blind eyes, disconnected from their souls. Where we are going being closed off to one another is a very dark, destructive and lonely place.

this song is so relevant today. Marvin Gaye was ahead of his time when he wrote this song. Not much has changed since the last 50 years. The country is still in debt, racism and hate is still there, political divide is at its peak. The war in Afghanistan gained us nothing. Opioids crisis is on the rise, the economic collapse due to the pandemic won’t be able to recover for another 10 years. Global warming is still a thing as we continue to ignore it that the north and southern Ice caps are melting away and there will soon be nothing left and polar bears will be extinct. Really though WHATS GOING ON?

    • @Joe_J-MT_Boy
      @Joe_J-MT_Boy Месяц назад

When the ice caps are gone, those giant reflectors of the sun's energy will be no more. At that point, vast land areas will be uninhabitable by humans... and that will probably be the best thing to happen to the planet earth in a hundred thousand years. Not only will polar bears be gone, but we'll be gone, too.

What's Going On, Wake Up Everybody, Ship Ahoy, To be free to be who we are, so so many great songs that exposed what was wrong in our society. And sadly nothing has changed all that much. Or worse, we've forgotten the message to our music. I graduate when What's Going On was released, I am now as I was then so proud of Marvin for letting God use him and others to make this album.
People still today walk up to me and say "What's going on". My response is Marvin Gaye asked that same question and we've still not figured it out.

Love will always win. We are ALL children of God. Sisters and brothers. Those who hold on to hatred will only destroy your spirit. Please try to purge this from loving soul. We are meant to love and help one another. How easy and fulfilling that is! Imagine!

Katykeema, James Brown is literally the King of Funk, that’s what the most people get wrong. He Created a special Funk Sound and danced to it like no one does before, so that was not soul typically , and they called it Funk.
James Browns biggest hits are the ones who are Funky and quicker,
Marvin Gayes biggest hits are the ones about problems in the society , and deep love songs, and that’s what i call Soul !

I’m stuck in my history. I’m not a rapper and while in not in an auditory, liking hip hop, I understand it’s value to the newer generation. I often thought of wanting to record one of my songs with a female hip hop singer. Maybe one day. All praise to Marvin.

Marvin Gaye's brother, Frankie, had come home from Vietnam and Marvin wrote "What's Going On" about what was happening from his brother's perspective.
Marvin cut the song 'What's Going On" and Motown refused to release it. So Gaye said he said he'd boycott recording anything until "What's Going On" the single was released. It eventually was and became a #2 hit. The rest of the album was recorded in about 10 days.
"What's Going On" is a classic and timeless.
