I bought the dust shroud for the Delta Cruzer from Shop Nation and the improvement is night and day. I dreaded having to use any miter saw just due to the dust explosion they always make, but the shroud easily takes care of 95% of the dust. Main thing is don't plunge directly into the wood. Run the blade out and push it into the wood if it is narrow enough. That kicks most of the dust right into the chute.
I also have that saw and bought the dust shroud. It rules! Game changer. Go watch the Shop Nation video of him trying to intentionally break it. Might save you from having to buy a new one.
I just finished building this miter station last weekend. I incorporated a hood into mine with a 4 inch dust port and dust doors. Matt I couldn't be happier with this station! I changed some things, such as added five sliding shelves in the cabinets but for the most part I followed your easy to read plans. I love your channel and your "5 things", anything videos! Keep up the great work my friend, and thank you!
i actually installed a range hood on clearance from Home Depot above my miter saw and exhaust it into a Kirby Micron Magic vacuum bag along with Bosch dust extractor a few years ago, lol…no dust in the air and i love the LED lights on the range hood as i’m making cuts…just learning about Shop Nation
I built a small miter station about the size of yours 2-3 years ago, but later I added a box with my shop vac in the cabinet directly beneath the saw and put a 6” scoop in the base of the station behind my saw. What a world of difference. The dust just flies in the box and gets sucked down into the vac. Not a lick of dust outside the box. I have the zero clearance tape, but can’t do the sled, or too lazy to do the sled as I’d have to rework my station to lower my saw to allow for the additional hight of the sled, but I installed a wooden backer plate against the saw fence and with the zero clearance tape, it works the same as your sled.
Another good upgrade I did on my Dewalt Slider was adding the laser beam module that shows you where the blade will cut. It was easy to install and I got the instructions and kit from someone here on RUclips.
The 780 comes from Dewalt with the built-in LED shadow light that casts an exact shadow line of where the blade will cut. I previously had a 779 with the laser LED & agree that they're a great upgrade if you don't have a saw that is already equipped with one. I think the reason he didn't think to mention it as an upgrade is because he has the 780.
I just bought my first miter saw earlier today. I had bought the DeWalt DWS779 12” Dual bevel sliding miter saw for $175 with my dad’s discount. I think I made a good decision with my first purchase of a miter saw at the age of 14
I love Diablo blades. In my experience the 80 tooth blade produces less tear (if ANY) than the blade you recommended. But each to their own. I do like your tip for Zero Clearance, quick and easy solution.
Thank you! I enjoy watching your shows. I just ordered my CMT blades from Taylor Toolworks. I was getting poor cuts and I didn't even think about the blade.
First thing I do with any miter saw is make several zero clearance inserts. Lately been buying HF Bauer blades fantastic bang for buck but I do love CMTs
I note you shimmed your saw. You can make the recess for your saw deeper, then lay a piece of plywood on it. With four bolts, nuts and washers, you can drill through the bottom board, mount the bolts with T nuts, then adjust the board you laid on it up or down to accommodate dimensions of different miters. Drill holes part way into the upper board, for the bolt tops to go in to, to hold it in place. I came up with this when I was trying to come up with a way to move a mantle clock around and still have it perfectly level, which was critical to whether or not it worked.

Thanks for this! immediately ordered the dust collection upgrade kit. My Dewalt cuts beautifully (with a finishing blade from Bosch) and I use it all the time for clean cuts at accurate angles. Its a bloody mess though.
Great video. I have the Dust collector for my Ridgid glide miter saw and have been very happy with it. I also used the tape with my old miter saw and just have not had a minute to put it on my new Ridgid Saw. Now to get my self in gear and make the fence system
Great tips Matt! A while ago I bought the zero clearance tape at your recommendation, and I’m definitely going to suck it up and buy the $10 million stick now… I really like the zero clearance sled too! One upgrade you didn’t mention was a laser or a shadow line… I bought a inexpensive laser that replaces the arbor nut of my miter saw from Amazon and that works pretty well! And Drew from Fisher’s Shop added a shadow line to his saw that seems stinking sweet! I hope you and Amy are doing well!
I ordered this exact dust extraction from the same guy about a month ago. I still haven't received it yet. However, it was a pre-order for the Dewalt model I needed. I can't wait to get it. It's good to see that it's a good product.
If you're looking for a simple miter saw station, try the one from Shanty 2 Chic. I built that one about 5 years ago and it's simple and provides for bulky storage under the saw.
I just installed that same dust collection kit on my DeWalt miter saw yesterday. A major improvement over the stock dust collection which is practically nonexistent!!
The other thing is that it makes the miter saw more compact. The dewalt is awkward enough with its sliding bars out the back but with the dust collection back there it is even worse.
I wish the cordless dewalt had a depth stop. Dust collection is surprisingly good, especially with the Camvac attached to it. I need one of this sticks, had my first scary catch the other day, wow, the force was incredible
Great video as always. I purchased that zero clearance material but then became concerned that by raising the cutting area of the saw's bed slightly higher than its overall height and thereby introducing a slight angle to the miter. I use my miter saw for making picture so those angles really matter. What do you think?
I was concerned about that too, but found that a business card is the same thickness as the zero clearance tape. When I’m really concerned about the accuracy of the cut I slip one under the material being cut. If I continue using it I may just put them on there with double-sided tape.
Using the FastCap ZC on my DW definitely threw off my cuts a 32nd. Works like a charm on my table saw but I'm able to adjust the throat plate. Not able to do that on the DW.
I bought a small “pet tent” from amazon and mounted it on the back of my saw. 95% reduction. It looks like a pop up tent and is about 2x2x2. Just unscrewed the back screws I used to tie the saw to my table, slid it under the saw about an inch and put the screws back in. Reduction seen is with no vacuum at all.
I saw the cmt saw blade on your daily deals. With shipping (possibly to Alaska is higher), a 80 tooth diablo finish blade is cheaper up here in Alaska. Is it good enough?
I’m constantly finding myself cutting narrow material on my miter saw, setting up stop blocks and improvised push sticks just to keep my fingers away and hopefully not wind up getting shot in the chest or face with a kick back Thought about your miter sled, wondering if that’ll help me out
When you build your miter station, build a dust collection box behind it. Angle the box to a central point behind the saw at the floor of tge station. Atrach your dust collection there. Funnels all the dust to one spot.
Another addition is the Fastcap 10 Million Dollar Stick. Cutting a small piece of wood on a miter saw can be dangerous when placing your fingers close to the blade to shave off a little. The hold down stick allows you to firmly hold the piece and keep your fingers safely away. I've used mine a bunch of times. Last used to cut filler pieces to door hinge mortises when I turned a swing door slab into a barn door. I cut small shavings off of my blanks get them to fit perfectly. Not every mortise was the same.
A zero clearance fence does a good job of minimizing tear out on my Kapex but, it raise havoc with the dust collection because the fence blocks or collapses the chute unless I keep it real low and then of course the tear out starts again. JimE
Tip for people like me that only have have a cheap Mitre saw. Upgrade the blade to minimum 60 tooth. Slow down the speed of your cross cuts, you'll get much less tear out or use a piece of sacrificial board underneath. Even a couple strips of painters tape will help for zero clearance (for a few cuts)
The throat plates on those DeWalt's are adjustable. I had a zero clearance on mine by just turning a few screws. Though I had mine for several years before I realized that. Probably something in the instruction manual about that, but who reads those anyway.
Ordered the Dewalt dust collection based upon this video. I've got a full hood covering my saw with dust collection and it does a good job but improving the collection immediately around the blade can only make periodic clean-up easier. Looking forward to fitting it and not making a mess. ;)
Your channel is very helpful. THANKS I hope. you make big $$$ from you tube. It's great to see a man of faith be subtle as the message is there to see but not being preached to. In addition your fast paced delivery is much appreciated. Excellent..THANKS
Check out the new FlexVolt DCS 781 it has a much improved dust collection set up that very much resembles the kit you bought, is also lighter, uses but just 1 FlexVolt battery compared to my previous FlexVolts 2 battery system but no 110v conversion pack. . Direct worm drive instead of belt driven, I should also mention for old renovation guys like myself the 18 lbs they shaved off of the saw is a blessing 😂
So I saw you add the secondary fence since you cut out the 45 on the 4 inch high fence. What happens when you wanna make 45? Is that shorter fence removable somehow? Or is it just clamped in there when you’re making your 90s? Thanks for some great ideas.
I ordered the dust collection last week for my Dewalt miter saw looks like I’ll be able to get it a little closer to the wall as well , when I’m done remodeling my shop the sled is on my build list as I cut a lot of small parts for toys. Thanks for all the great tips Matt!👊🏻
I would love to get the dust shroud but it is still not available. I placed my order for it at least three weeks ago. All of the other things were done some time ago. Thanks for the tips.
Excellent suggestions, Matt. I have a DeWalt 774 mitre saw which came with a 216mm (8.5 inch) blade. Can you recommend a CMT blade for that? Being a smaller diameter it may have to have less teeth than your 12 inch recommendation but not sure.
I have a Kobalt miter saw and the back plate (fence) is bellied towards the back, which is causing some kickback and of course cuts that are not square. If I run a straight edge across it, there is almost 3/16 of an inch space in the middle. I can't find parts for it and need some suggestions as how to modify this for the reasons above.
You don't have to build an entire sled. Many of us have been running electric miters for decades, so came across the problem with lack of support for small parts over and over again. With the zero clearance plate problem solved, all you need is Masonite backing attached directly to the stock fence. This not only solves the problem of lack of support for small pieces, it reduces how much material you have to use. If you use a bit thicker material. you can even inset mounting bolts in horizontal slots and relief cuts so the fences can slide left or right, allowing you to use the same back for 0-45 right or left.
That's tough. Probably go with Makita just because of the space saving design of not having the rails out of the back like the DeWALT has. DeWALT is an excellent saw though.
Maybe, maybe not. I have an older Makita saw which has adjustable pieces on each side of the blade, so you can move them as close to the blade as you dare. But before I saw this video with the tape idea, I made myself some MDF zero-clearance inserts to replace the Makita ones. While doing this I noticed that the Makita pieces actually sat a little below the level of the rest of the "table". I thought that was weird, but now that I know about this tape, I think that little space would make the tape work out very nicely. And much faster to apply than how long it took me to make up some inserts.
It is also pretty easy to cut and attach a flexible sheet of something (rubber, vinyl) to enclose the rear of any miter saw to guide the dust up into the OEM chute. Each one will be different.
When you’re mitering 90 cuts and fitting. I’m having issues with my cuts going down being little off angle because of my pull. Any solutions? Cutting aluminum

I definitely need to get a miter saw. I'll have to save these video and come back to it when I get one. God bless you
Great video I always use CMT blades in all my saws and I can say they are the best I have used.
Thanks for this! immediately ordered the dust collection upgrade kit. My Dewalt cuts beautifully (with a finishing blade from Bosch) and I use it all the time for clean cuts at accurate angles. Its a bloody mess though.

Great tips Matt! A while ago I bought the zero clearance tape at your recommendation, and I’m definitely going to suck it up and buy the $10 million stick now… I really like the zero clearance sled too!

Five really good tips. Already have a miter saw station, and it’s wonderful.
Great video, great tips . We all or most of us start out with a miter saw .
If you're looking for a simple miter saw station, try the one from Shanty 2 Chic. I built that one about 5 years ago and it's simple and provides for bulky storage under the saw.
@6:00 Is your secondary fence removable? How is it attached (double sided tape?)
Try changing the blade. You won't be as happy.
I would trade
All 3 of those for the Hercules. I got from harbor freight. I can't believe how much the quality improved!!!
Thank you so much. I have the dewalt sliding miter saw. I love it but it is so darn messy! Thank you!
In my little shed right next to the laser engraver is my Miter saw and the dust drove me nuts. It was always extra cleanup at the end of a project.
Thanks! Very informative!
Found the answer I posted on another video here Matt! Cheers 😊
Just a regular telesop channel and that is what money does to man! Amen
I wish the cordless dewalt had a depth stop. Dust collection is surprisingly good, especially with the Camvac attached to it. I need one of this sticks, had my first scary catch the other day, wow, the force was incredible
Using a blade with a negative hook angle, or at least a very shallow one helps improve safety too.
Thank you for the zero clearance tape idea! I cant believe i didnt think of this! 😊
Great video as always. I purchased that zero clearance material but then became concerned that by raising the cutting area of the saw's bed slightly higher than its overall height and thereby introducing a slight angle to the miter. I use my miter saw for making picture so those angles really matter. What do you think?
I haven't noticed it making a difference, but I'm not making frames. But, my DeWALT throat plate is slightly lower than the bed of the saw too.
Literally building my miter station this week! Great tips and just in time 🤙🏼🤙🏼
I bought a small “pet tent” from amazon and mounted it on the back of my saw. 95% reduction. It looks like a pop up tent and is about 2x2x2. Just unscrewed the back screws I used to tie the saw to my table, slid it under the saw about an inch and put the screws back in. Reduction seen is with no vacuum at all.
Is there shop tour video? I'd like to see your entire shop and how it's set up.
Yes there is, here you go ruclips.net/video/NdYM6ayLlrg/видео.htmlsi=IFm7AgZUoL6Y8sBr
I saw the cmt saw blade on your daily deals. With shipping (possibly to Alaska is higher), a 80 tooth diablo finish blade is cheaper up here in Alaska. Is it good enough?
Those are decent blades. I used them for a long time, cut good and clean. The CMT will just stay sharper, longer.
I’m constantly finding myself cutting narrow material on my miter saw, setting up stop blocks and improvised push sticks just to keep my fingers away and hopefully not wind up getting shot in the chest or face with a kick back
Thought about your miter sled, wondering if that’ll help me out
When you build your miter station, build a dust collection box behind it. Angle the box to a central point behind the saw at the floor of tge station. Atrach your dust collection there. Funnels all the dust to one spot.
Getting the laser attachment for saws that don't have one (like my DeWalt) was a huge upgrade for me.
Another RUclipsr called those miter saw alters. Both ways are great.
THANKS
I hope. you make big $$$ from you tube.
It's great to see a man of faith be subtle as the message is there to see but not being preached to.
In addition your fast paced delivery is much appreciated.
Excellent..THANKS
Great video, very informative & on point.
I have the same question. Would love to hear your response. Thanks for your hard work and very watchable videos.
Great info - thanks!
Hahaha, I watch both of their channels. I also bought the DeWalt dust collection.
Could you provide the link to the miter jig to cut up small pieces. I thought you have a template for sale
no template, sorry
Awesome tips! Thank you!
Cardboard and duct tape works pretty well for dust collection.
Great video. Very helpful. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Would you be able to do a detailed calibration miter saw video from a woodworkers point of view
Great tip Matt thanks for sharing
Your link for cmt chrome says 1inch bore where dewalt is 30mm bore , could you please advice
Can you get a dado set for a cross cut or radial arm saw
6:43 Paul Blart. 💯🔥
I bought a laser guide for my dewalt saw off amazon. That was a great investment.
Very informative videos!
Shout out to the kickback.
Would you buy a dewalt 780 or makita
That's tough. Probably go with Makita just because of the space saving design of not having the rails out of the back like the DeWALT has. DeWALT is an excellent saw though.
#2 - adding tape for "zero clearance" you also need to add tape to the in and out feed otherwise the vertical cut won't be 90 degrees to the board
Great channel sir!
Are there any better clamps for a miter saw than the ones that come with the Dewalt Miter saw?
Much better content than all those "5-tools you need" videos. Thanks for the tips!
Dude!! That Kevin James clip 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
It is also pretty easy to cut and attach a flexible sheet of something (rubber, vinyl) to enclose the rear of any miter saw to guide the dust up into the OEM chute. Each one will be different.
The 2 videos that are right here and right here were not right there or right there 😂
Thanks Matt. Really good ideas! 😊😊
Great video! Very informative, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks again!
Really useful video. Thanks 🙌
Glad it was helpful!
When you’re mitering 90 cuts and fitting. I’m having issues with my cuts going down being little off angle because of my pull. Any solutions? Cutting aluminum
