LET'S REVEAL THE SECRETS OF THE OATH TO OUR CHILDREN - KIMATHI'S BODY GUARD NDERITU WA MUKUNDI

- Dedan Kimathi's former bodyguard, Mau Mau veteran Nderitu wa Mukundi, popularly known as Hang'arari (the one who hangs around), has a utilitarian view of the Mau Mau oath and how the aging veterans should treat it the oath they took. He says that although the oaths they took bound them to strict silence, time has come for the veterans to reveal the details of the oath so that future generations may know. He appreciates that if they don't, their children and their children may never know. So he says veterans should share what they know, even at the pain of death. As Kimathi's bodyguard, he witnessed many of Kimathi's meetings, and has a list of all the officers Kimathi promoted. At one time, he says he was shot. A thoroughly discombobulated Kimathi came and spat on his wound, which, against all odds, proceeded to heal. He says that the oathing started soon after Kenyatta returned from England in 1946. At that time, he (Nderitu) was working in the farm of a settler nicknamed "Githuria" because he farted carelessly and recklessly in front of Africans as a way of showing that he did not respect them. He used to mistreat his African workers and fed them low-grade skimmed milk. If you were caught using fresh, skimmed milk, you were jailed for six months. An African could not shop at the same shop as a white settler. No African could keep a cow. In Ol Kalou and Nyahururu towns, Europeans used to shop at shop owned by an Indian by the name of Yunia, and an African could be severely punished merely for looking inside the shop. He says that Mt. Kenya people suffered more than the Jews. He also sings very interesting songs, which he says were prophetic of not just independence but of a changed social order. He also recalls a meeting that was held at Ol Kalou by Kenyatta accompanied by Mbiu Koinange and Achieng Oneko in the run up to the declaration of a State of Emergency. On his way to Nakuru, Kenyatta had been blocked by wildlife and the ever suspicious and superstitious Kenyatta decided to change course and head to Ol Kalou where a large meeting had been organized, but which white people had decided to attend, perhaps to intimidate those in attendance. In that meeting, a fiery Achieng Oneko incited everyone, when he said, pointing at white settlers, that Kenya belonged to the Africans, not the pink faced gathered at the meeting. Kenyatta himself told the people that he had been offered independence for his Kikuyu people only but had firmly turned it down saying that all Kenya Africans deserved freedom. Mzee Nderitu obviously regards this statement as significant, and wonders where ethnic animosity comes from given the sacrifices everyone was making at that time. He also tells of how Gen Ole Kisio, a Maasai Mau Mau fighter, led a team of his fighters to visit Dedan Kimathi, the overall Mau Mau leader in Nyandarua forest. The interview ends with a series of questions that can be summarised as follows: Why is the role of Mau Mau in the independence of this country given short shrift? #maumau #kenya #africa #kenyatta #africanliberation #africanhistory
Keep it up this history would be lost without such history
This guys went through a lot to deliver our nations ,his body language has it all this guys were not gready unlike modern day leader. This man is humerous
Hello MauMau Chronicles, why dont we the people donate something towards our grandfathers well being? We will be waiting forever for the government! Maybe post their account numbers/ contacts for those who want to reach out and help as some are in still sadly in poverty.
Am proud to be Kenyan...much respect snd gratitude to our forefathers
As long as we don't respect these men and honour their sacrifice, we'll face hardtimes, some of these men are really hurting inside.
Praying for their total healing and recovery n peace 🙏
Accursed kenya government ignoringour her frreedom fighters. Look, here is kimathis bodyguard, unrecognised and languishing in poverty. God shall regard the prayer of the destitute, he shall not despise our prayer. He will bring justice to the poor of the people, He shall save the children of the needy, and will break in pieces the oppressor. Ps 72:4
Best mau mau narrative I've ever heard. Thank you for your service Mr. Bodyguard sir! We ask Kenyans should push for a motion that The government should have a national heroism day for these surviving veterans.., shame on those called masqueraders.

Thank you very much for interviewing these honorable legends. It is quite unfortunate that the leaders of the country they so gallantly fought for, decided to shun them. What a shame! May God bless their families. Hats off to Mau Mau chronicles.
You are most welcome!
We value your bravery Guka and God will give you closure and reward you
A true hero
Brave man and very sharp memory
The media in Kenya is quite pathetic....This is the kind of things we should be reminded of often
I always empathise with those who fought for our freedom from the shackles of tyranny. My late father was one of them under the late general Wamutundu. As this man comments, during the funeral of my father on his land plot 315 of Lesirko Scheme, even an assistant chief did not attend. They all regarded him as a quarter in his own home after his land was corrupted by a lineage of government administrators (thieves).
What the interviewee should know before his demise, because as he looks is on his twilight years, is that Africans cannot govern themselves because various factors namely;
Nepotism, tribal politics, myopic political parties, dishonesty, corruption, hatred, greed and following foreign religious beliefs, which were used to disempower them.
if we got our own country like wazungu wa saying we could be better off its exhausting defending ourselves from this other tribes always attacking we would be far, there was need for mau mau and death if he had agreed for us to have our own country in fact those other tribes wanasema they are so brave kama wakale and at the end we shall have our own country we cant leave our kids like this worrying about who will be president and will they victimize us
Yes, we also sold our brothers to slavery, like notorious chief kivoi
The main and dangerous enemy of Mau Mau fighters is Kikuyu leaders bitter truth.
True to a large extent.
how and they were given instructions what to do from above although they were already colonial chiefs like josiah njonjo sr so you cant say gikuyu you find those colonial chief njiri etc those were the enemies
Kenyatta ahikia nyakiuru agitahika muma.Akiriganirwo kihumo
Good to see you uncle..Njitagwo Nderitu wa Mureithi/kahura
Thank you for appreciating your gallant uncle. A real hero!
What about general kago and ihuura where they participate on fight.
Our freedom fighter hero GOD bless you all #kenya gov sad😢
Am here from TikTok
My salute to our heroes.
Kabisa!
That hero is asking a very Pertinent question!!!
Yes. He is asking a very profound question.
yes we should have been given our own country back then, because that was instructions from mzungu from day one of this mess of a neocolonial country been formed so all we can do is us gikuyu people who appreciate them we give them something and go to their funerals too, coz actually it will always be like that because wazungu dont forget to an sextent insaw flood donations by unicef were given to kisumu there was no gikuyu community mentioned to be helped by un
Thank you for giving him a platform to share his experience with the maumau.
He is a hero indeed🙌
May God bless him
Thank you
Descendant of Mau Mau here taking notes.
A correction to Mr Joseph Maina, they all started by working for the whites, the best strategists in the Mau mau were those who fought in the WW2. especially Barma . He is well versed.
Noted
Sure but remember before they were taken to world wars some of them were workers at settler farms
Kikuyus saved Kenya.
You could say that again. It offends a lot of people though. People forget that it was not possible for all communities to come together for a common cause against the colonialists due to the colonialists divide and rule tactics.
When?
Was achieng oneko Kikuyu ?
Why are you using the statement it offends a lot of people? Nkt.....funny people@@maumauchronicles4296
Where did Men go😂😂because hawa are on another level
Salute to this patriot, but my question is he says he was kimathi bodyguard but during the capture of kimathi there is nowhere where kimathi showed any resistance,if he had any bodyguards then fire would have been exchanged n some casualties,so the big question is where was he during kimathi capture ????
Kimathi was alone when he was shot and captured. He had no bodyguards with him at that time.
Did you here, poeple who love his poeple tell them not to react,
Jesus told his deciples not to react not be killed,
But ignorant ,do maths
KENYANS APPRECIATE TOTALLY, THANKS MAU MAU,THAAI PEACE ✌️
Thank you.
Kazi safi bro.
Asante sana!
The answers to these questions will be answered someday, mau mau MUST smile someday!
Kikuyu will argue with this but Ochieng Aneko a Luo is the one who brought enlightenment 😂 click at 11:35 to confirm
Mau Mau had a lot of respect for Achieng Oneko. Tribe had nothing to do with it.
Absolutely wonderful piece of history.
Thank you.

How were these heroes moving from place to another? Our heroes were really gifted. I highly respect them.
They were walking. A human being can walk more 50km a day. Remember this was a tough generation, not your broiler generation.

You can say that again brother!
😊
Nipo....!!!
Thank you!
Excellent narrative. Please make write up for reference.
Thank you.
Most of these fellows were children in the fifties, when emergency was declared. They just give stories of what they heard.Kimathi & most of his die hard heroes either died then,& the remaining are in their late 90s,& are very few.
It is amazing how you are willing to dismiss people who have not interviewed. Most of the veterans we have interviewed here were born between 1930 to 1937. By the time the war broke out, they were between 17 and 23 years old. Most modern soldiers are recruited at about the same age. In most guerrilla armies like Mau Mau have child solders as young as 10 years. Remember also that the Kikuyu used to circumcise boys between the age of 14 and 18 because of what was known as "Muhingo." A young initiate of 14 was therefore considered a man. Other than your homeguard ancestry, what other motive could be inspiring you to make such a statement?
Well said.@@maumauchronicles4296
@maumauchronicles4296 why bother explain to an ignorant i***. Can he give us his version that he knows.
My grandmother, Njeri mwari wa Wangatho, was born in 1937 in Ng'arua. She often told me stories of pre-i dependence Kenya like smuggling food for the mau mau and updating them on what was happening outside the forest. She died last year.
family
Good to know
Huyo akuna kitu anajua ya maumau walikuwa wasaliti bana maumau akuwa ana fanya kazi kwa wazungu
Kenyatta's arrest was a stage managed process...
Wishing you could provide some evidence.
What about general kameru from mukurweni and Gaturi who was shot and then burnt for six months
We would love to get more information on these heroes.
Yup de yout should know de oath so dem would ovastand how serious this Liberation ting is cause were not free as many think even now after so-called independence
Tru dat!
Well spoken but not all who went to war were from church no our grandparents were not
True. However, Indi, or Independent Church, was right at the centre.
What happened to field marshal mathenge wa mirugi and his team like general kabuku and kamanja
That remains a very big question in Mau Mau studies.

It is possible to ask him.
@@maumauchronicles4296 plse let me know how I can do that. We have always had a missing part of that history in our family as my grandfather was died in 1953.

I don't want to descredit the old man but this doesn't add up. Let us assume mzee is 80. the war started in 1952, so he was basically 8-15 years at that time.
There is no way he would have been Kimathi's body guard. Unless he wants to tell us he is above 90.
He seems to know a lot though. Seems that he had great source of information.
Why are you assuming he is 80? To suit your funny narrative of disparaging his story? Kwenda huko!
@@maumauchronicles4296 What age would you give the man? 100?
Hi ni ya wakikuyu wale hatujui kikuyu haituhisu

The Wazee you see giving stories today were children during MauMau, how comes my grandmother was old in 70s and she knew everything about maumau ,how they were taking food to them in aberdares ,died in 100yrs in early 90s. They should stop telling stories of what they were told fixing themselves inside the story.let them tell us they were told this stories.
Please do not generalise. If your grandmother was old in the 1970s, it means just that - that she was old! She probably experienced Mau Mau in her 70s. Remember that there are those who experienced Mau Mau in their late teens and early 20s. They are still alive and in their 80s and 90s. They are genuine witnesses.
Those that fought maumau should be at least 100 yrs
No, they are in their 80s and 90s. Revolutions historically have been steered by very young people. In Kikuyu traditions, boys were initiated into manhood and by extension warrior status as young as 14-18yrs old. The slightly older warriors like Kimathi (Born in 1923) took on leadership roles and battle strategists since they had combat experience (WW2 Veterans) and oathing duties because they were respected. Otherwise, the Ita (army) mainly consisted of very young men.
Even the Gen Z revolution happening today, participants are anywhere between 18-25yrs plus older generations.

Asking questions without listening to the whole story … 🤦♀️
He says he had been captured before Kimathi's arrest.
A very wise question.
In short, there was a breach of security .....a whole Field Marshal should not walk without a bodyguard!
