Back when … Music Video Dancers … actually DANCED.
She does her own background vocals. She's been praised for painstakingly recording them and you can find acapella versions of it. She writes and produces her own music, helping break ground for women in history. Control is credited with starting contemporary r&b, new jack swing and a new version of dance-pop focused on using hip hop production. while rhythm nation began using samples in pop/r&b. shes remarkably influential yet has been erased following her blacklisting.
@@jaypierre8992 Jam and lewis consistently say shes a producer. Shes the first woman nominated as producer of the year at the Grammys. The amount of writers is because of sampling. Something else she pioneered in pop. Almost every song from Control to Velvet Rope is only written and produced by her, Jam and Lewis.
@@poptart2943 Yess, teach the kids! Janet was the first female to be nominated for Producer of the Year, for Rhythm Nation.
Jimmy Jam stated that Janet had a hard time trying to come up with the melody for this track. He told Janet to maybe think of it as an Indian chant with a lower tone for the versus. Janet’s harmonies KILL!! She has the ultimate harmonized it’s unreal. Btw, Janet changed the game with this one. I remember the VH1 video premier and EVERYBODY tried to do the choreography!!
She and Jimmy Jam are one of the best musical teams ever. Just so damn good! And hell yeah, you’re right - that music video was played INCESSANTLY in 1993, between MTV, VH1, and BET!
After almost 30 years IF is still HOT 👍
Janet Jackson is still the blueprint
Janet is legendary! "Come Back To Me" is my favorite ballad from Janet. "Rhythm Nation" is also a must!
Yess such an iconic song! 😍❤
My queen Janet definitely had SWAGGER! That’s a perfect word for the living legend and Icon!
She works well in a team, and great team leader. It's suits her personality
Everything from Janet is gold. If you like this song you should do her other harder rock sounding song BLACK CAT!
Tim...not everything went gold, lol...along with this song.
@@michaelasay8587 EVERYTHING is gold! EVERYTHING!
Tell em again Tim everything is gold !! And Black Cat is my shit 🔥🔥
@@youdontneedtoknowallat4805 😃😄😁👍
Or "trust a try" and "this time"
I memorized all the words to this song and the dance routine when i was a child. I love this song. So talented.
U got to see Janet's rhythm Nation a masterpiece
fkn love Janet and she has never released a bad album. Her videos along with the other greats back then like Michael and Madonna really set the standard and raised the bar in pop performances/videos. Janet has sooo many good videos to check out. as for the 29 tracks, a lot of them are short spoken word or interludes between tracks, It was a standard on a lot of her albums.
You’re spot on about Janet’s backgrounds being the chorus. Janet has been called the Queen of Harmonies. She’s known to have some of the best background vocals!
Janet's song "velvet rope" is so sonically amazing you will like that since you pay attention to the instrumentals. She doesn't have a video for that so you will have to just listen to that on your own time but it's worth it.
Other than the dancing, singing, and Janet, another interesting aspect of this video is the interactive screen activities of the patrons of the club. This video is early 90s - touch screens, Zoom, Facetime, etc. was a a decade+ away. But she had it in her video. Art imitating (future) life.
She’s always been ahead of time. Songs, albums, visuals. The Velvet Rope album perfect example
I love the fact she does all her background vocals as well. So it's always layers and layers of different Janet's harmonizing on top of each other. She also does her own vocal production as well and does co-produce a lot of the tracks with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis
I love that the lyrics of this song are dirty, but no one really understood what she was saying without reading the lyrics. lol
Exactly.... I used to laugh every time it came on the radio because people had absolutely no idea what she was really saying.
Oh wow what a throw back! When this song came out I memorized the dance moves and would do it in my cousins room when no one was looking lol. I grew up in an intense religious home so music and dancing was forbidden. But I found a way to sneak my music and dance fix 😊
Her singing and dancing is just superb, yes, an amazing person!! xx
I love that this is a mix of rap and rock. Plus, the whole touch screen thing wasn't invented or used yet. Each person is basically facetiming each other before facetime was a thing.
One of my favorite parts of this song is the sample of The Supremes’ “Someday We’ll Be Together “. There’s a great video here on RUclips of her producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis breaking down the making of this track.
"Together again", "Runaway", "Rope Burn" and "Again" are my favourites.
I love Janet and I get what she meant about losing that innocent image. She started out not only as a little kid actor/singer but also the youngest of the Jackson family. Everybody saw her as a little girl. I remember some people were shocked that she went from the Control and Rhythm Nation girl to S-E-X-Y! A few didn't like it but the majority were here for it. Everyone at my school, no matter what color, wanted to be Janet Jackson. Those were good times 😂
Janet is an incredible artist, there is nobody like her today...Pls react to Roxette Anyone and Milk , toast and honey...two amazing songs. Thx
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced this stuff. They made the 90s sound of which you speak. Probably most prominent with her records.
This is off my fave Janet self entitled album JANET (1993).
The LIVE VERSION OF What About on the VH1 Vogue Fashion Awards. It is the best performance of that song, and you’d appreciate the vocal and performance BIG time. I would love somebody to react to that. I’ve been waiting for it.
Seriously, “What About” is a fantastic song!!! But I would do the live version from the velvet rope tour (which was awesome BTW). Her vocals are on point in that and they don’t bleep out half her chorus like at the awards show!
Thanks for reacting to Janet’s music. Unfortunately, due to being blacklisted with the super bowl fiasco, a whole generation missed out on Janet’s music, especially those around 30 and younger. The “Janet” album and “The Velvet Rope” albums for me were her best. During the time of the “Janet” album, which includes “If” and “That’s the way love goes” Janet was actually secretly married, NO ONE knew during this time until the divorce was announced.
You made me smile. I like knowing a nice person. You're a good person.
Definitely do more Janet! Can't go wrong...so many hits!
Something about this video is so cyberpunk. Janet Jackson as a trendsetter is so overlooked.
Great review. Michael was a great artist but I have always preferred Janet more. She has more diverse catalogue and really spans pop, rock, soul, R&B and more. Here are other songs and videos you should review in order of when she made them.
1. Come Back to Me
2. Love Will Never Do Without You
3. Again
4. Together Again
5. I Get Lonely
6. All For you
Also here are some live performances to see:
1. 1993 VMAs Thats the way love goes/If medley
2. What about at 1998 VH1 Awards
3. Entire 1998 Velvet Rope tour
4. Trust a Try at 2001 All for you tour
yeah I preferred Janet over MJ as well
Michael was huge but Janet slid in the back and kicked ass…. 2022 still doing it now that’s a Queen 👑
One of my favourites ❤
When he asked if she was speaking another language, I felt better about my inability to understand a lot of the lyrics when this song was released. Today, of course, you can search the lyrics online and finally know what she's singing. For me, I had a hard time understanding Michael's lyrics also.
“Again” is also a phenomenal song and music video. That one is much more of an “expression of love.”
DUUUUDDDEEE!!! Please react to That’s The away Love Goes/ If live at the VMAs in the 90s. That performance was quintessential Janet. Anyway, thank you for your reactions to Janet. I appreciate it.
Now that was someone head bopping, smiling
you enjoyed yourself 😊
Heyyy Anton. I absolutely love you for this review. You already know Janet is my favorite of all time. What I love the most is you were jamming to the song. The song and video are both a vibe. In case you are interested in more Janet songs to review are: I Get Lonely, Black Cat, Again, Nasty, and Made For Now. The thing about Janet is she can do all types of music, From Pop and R&B to even Rock. Black Cat is a Rock song that Janet wrote and was a #1 Hit making her the only Black Female in history to have a Rock song to hit #1. I enjoy you so much Anton. One love my brother.
Easily my favorite Janet song. I always loved the industrial sound from "If" and has aged rather well. Her harmonies are top notch and shows her true artistry.
Great insight and review of "IF". Check out Janet's "Black Cat" from Rhythm Nation 1814, ahe actually wrote the lyrics and instrumental...her most "rock" song of her career and one of her best in my opinion.
I
Love IF !
I like you too , Anton ! 😛
❤
True icon ❤️
In the 80s Janet was very shy and never showed skin or talked sexually until the early 90s. It was a big shock in early 90s when she promoted the “Janet” album with the rolling stone cover posing half naked with someones hands over her breasts.🔥🔥
If you want to see Janet belch like Michael is “black cat”……🤯but……..
TOP BEST JANET SONGS THAT STRUCTURED HER LEGENDARY CAREER . “Nasty” “rhythm nation” “pleasure principle” “control” “love will never do” “I get so lonely” “when I think of you” “feedback” check out the Janet live tours she did, she tears up the floor with no mistake, it’s why Beyoncé, Britney and other pop artists try to follow her.
One of my favorite looks for her, she was STUNNING in this video. ❤🔥 Love her.
Her producers asked Janet to sing the song in like a "Indian Ritual Chant" Thats why her vocals sound deep at some points and bouncy in other parts to get that sound..listen again☝
Janet- come back to me is my all time favorite from her!
I remember spending hours with my friends to learn the entire choreography to this video. Wow I’m old. 😂
Native chat & drums fr The look!
Janet Jackson and Salma Hayek to me were the sexiest and baddiest bodies in the 90s and still got it
Your reaction was awesome to watch! If is my favorite video of all time!
Janet got you blushin' dude! HAHA. She was so damn good in her day. Really wasnt a bigger artist in the 90s. She had 16 top 10 hits in that decade and 6 of those hit #1. Everything she touched was big. Janet had some grit to her. Where Michael tried to be "Bad", Janet was. She had more edge and her songs had a tougher edge, If I had to choose a favorite Janet Jackson song, I wouldnt be able to. There are probably 5 that are in that top slot. She was sexy AF too. She had those abs and the body to go along with the songs. Video was huge for her. She worked it perfectly. There are so many JJ hits that this channel could work through, its highly unlikely youd be able to get through them. Glad you liked this one. Such a cool song. Don't worry, no one knew what the hell she was saying in the versus unless you had the album with the words laid out for you. Even then it took time to get it down.
You know what's cool about this video? It was filmed in 1993 and yet you get touch screens, Facetime-like calls and all kinds of technology that is common now but NOT around in that "era". The creativity and imagination of her, the director and her team!!! Wow!!
I love her >
So glad you enjoyed the song, Janet has pretty interesting songs, we have to explore her body of work of bit further. Don't get scared by looking at the tracklist of the albums almost half of those are short interludes between songs
Impressive how two single letters put together can mean and tell so much.
✨👑✨🏆❤️The Blueprint❤️🏆✨👑✨
Also really love your breakdown of the song and track itself because you were 100% on the money with this one! The comments on how it’s mixed and the background kind of being the song, very amazing analysis man! I’m usually SUPER critical of anyone that critiques Janet because I am obsessed with her, but you did good! Lol
she has so many songs in different genres
Janet, Michael, Madonna, and Prince owned 80s-early 90s pop
With this album, Janet was the queen of alternate videos for most of her videos that she came out with. IF had 2 versions, You Want This had 2 versions
The harmonies on this song is amazing. There an actual deconstruction of this song by James Cameron that is really interesting.
What's amazing about this video and probably taken for granted these days is the concept of having touch screen TVs when there weren't around back then.
What you mean
Janet Jackson is my girl crush forever. She's so hot! I'm so glad you like the song❤️
Love Janet! You should absolutely do Black Cat by her & Dirty Diana by Michael! That would be amazing!
I liked your reaction and really breaking down what the sound and video really meant👊🏽
Stacking those vocals is important! Brandy learned that from her and Michael!
I love how you take songs "to the lab" Watching you break down and analyze the songs has become my favorite things to watch
Yaaaasssss.
doing a reaction of one of my favs of Janet...and you mention "Do you get excited" of Roxette... I'm so glad!!!Huge fan here of Janet, roxette, MJ, NKOTB, TLC, the corrs, madonna... love your videos!! Hugs from Argentina!!
SO one thing you missed that in this video there is another famous person who was her back up dancer for years.....Jennifer Lopez....she also appears on "THATS THE WAY LOVE GOES". THAT WOULD BE A GREAT SONG FOR HER VOCALS.
Good thing she sings fast on this. The lyrics are spicy!
Please also check out 'All For You' and 'Together Again'. Such massive songs from my childhood...
13 year old me knew lyrics from the Janet album by heart that I wasn't even supposed to understand in English or even my own language yet 😄
You may enjoy this...Live HD performance from Janet Jackson of "That's The Way Love Goes" and "If" from the 1993 VMA's. #JanetJackson #VMA ...
This is the first album where Janet started using her sexuality. Other than Love Will Never Do Without You which surprised people, Janet was everyone's "little sister".
Yeah I always felt like Love Will Never Do was somehow magically from a future Janet album that time traveled back to the Rhythm Nation album lol
Yeeessss! Finally, my favorite Janet single and video ❤️
Omg you made me laugh when you said is she speaking another language? 😂 But you’re not alone though because idk what she says either. I just love the beat and the dancing 😂
That sound you’re describing was a trademark of the Jackson’s sound, a lot of the Jackson’s/ Jackson 5 songs really had background vocals & harmonies that really help make their songs what they were. And Janet w/ Jam & Lewis put her spin on her family sound.
The way the verses are sung is based off of Indian chanting. The producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis said that Janet was humming in that chanting style and she added the lyrics to make it match.
Check out some of the Jackson’s songs from when they were kids.
🔥 🔥 🔥
If anyone does some research, almost all
Of her songs have a sample of an iconic classic song. Rhythm nation- sly and the family stone. Motown and more. Its so good but funny that no one analyzing this have a clue
Early 90s Janet + Jimmy Jam + Terry Lewis >>>
It was a top 5 hit. It's probably a good thing it's a bit unclear because the lyrics are quite provocative. She's never crass, she's just sexually frank. Other '90's artists definitely went the provocative route, too, but leaned into the crass aspect of it. I'm thinking of stuff like "Too Close" or "My Neck, My Back" or "The Thong Song". Some might have tried to lump her in with those artists, but she wasn't tacky about it. And the production values for her videos were consistently excellent, especially after Rhythm Nation.
Would have loved to have seen your face reading the second verse of this song. LOL! Great job on this. I vote "Anytime, Anyplace," "Black Cat" or "When I Think Of You" as your next Janet reaction.
I was wondering of anyone was going to comment on the lyrics?
"Is she speaking another language?" TOOK ME OUT 😂
check out one of her most recent songs *'MADE FOR NOW'* watch the official video - its so wonderful.
Or alternatively her official video for *'DAMN BABY'*
Ciara did a great tribute to Janet. She's been seen as a kind of spiritual successor to Janet, approved by Janet herself.
You should react to "Again" (official video). I think that song & video expresses love the way she was describing & you were talking about. The video is still sexy but shows a more vulnerable side.
This is my favourite song by Janet, she is more then pop she is R&B
Please react to Janet Jackson ‘got til it’s gone’. Features a sample from Joni Mitchell, and rap from Q-Tip. First single from the velvet rope album. Very different for her. Video won a Grammy
I recommend her videos All For You, Feedback, Black Cat and What's It Gonna Be?
When are you gonna do some Donna summer's masterpieces?
This was the first album she expressed her sexuality. Iconic transformation.
Man the way I used to know this routine backwards and forwards
The producers asked her if she could sing the song in “Indian chant”, and she said Yes!!! singing her own lead to her own background vocals in her music, intricate kick ass dance moves, and a narrative to go with the music. She’s such a bad ass. Been watching and enjoying your JJ reviews!
by far my favorite Janet song.
While the song gets more and more explicit as it progresses (specifically the second verse of Janet describing her fantasy of both parties performing oral sex on each other), it is written and done in such a way that still feels regal and empowering from her perspective.
Her 1993 vma medley of That's the way love goes and if personifies her influence with the janet. era. You should def react to that one. ruclips.net/video/u3dOt6IUsYY/видео.html
You should play BLACK CAT, MISS YOU MUCH, PLEASURE PRINCIPLE for a start
You must react to her videos You Want This, I Get Lonely and Any time, Any place.
Michael's vocals are flashy...Janet is a harmonic genius, her technical abilities should never be underestimated. She has shown us before that she can do a big vocal if she wants to ('Bkack Cat', anyone?) 😉👍 but her technical prowess allows her to be subtle, and subtlety is a touch that not everybody can pull off. 👏
Also maybe janet jackson's miss you much and the video we go deep?
