  • The journey for U2 has been a long and exciting one. From humble beginnings, they now find themselves making history as the first band to perform in their most unique venue yet, Sphere, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Bono, the Edge, and Zane Lowe take an exclusive look into Las Vegas's most innovative performance venue as they plan to take the stage in September. Bono reflects on the invention of stadium rock by the Beatles, and muses about what the future of live music in general might look like. U2 also reflects on some of the experiences that led up to this point, including music video shoots and meeting Frank Sinatra.

I once drove U2 to one of their shows. It was one of their first headlining gigs. I had seen them in Dublin a year or two before they came to Providence to play Brown University. I was one of the people who ran the Concert Agency. When I picked them up and told them I had just spent some time going to school in Ireland, Bono said, "Why would you go to Ireland? It's feckin' desperate." We had a good laugh. Did I mention the show at Brown that night in early 1982 was in a venue that held 400, standing room patrons. 400 patrons. You can have Vegas unless Bono wants me to come out and reminisce. He can bring my Irish friend, Gareth Averil, with him. I can remember vividly being in that room with U2 and 399 other blessed souls. That was a concert.

What is so amazing about their music is each album speaks to the era in which it was created, and yet their music is absolutely timeless. Their songs still resonate 10, 20, 30 years later, whether it's "Pride", "October", "Where the Streets Have No Name", "Beautiful Day", "New Year's Day", etc. Few other bands have ever been able to do that.

Nah Clarke. I disagree. While there were visual elements to Pink Floyd’s tours, you only have to look at their last together (PULSE) in 1990 to see how lacking it was compared to what U2 and their team were putting together and toured with not 18 months later.
Not to take anything away from Floyd though - David Gilmour could stand on a load of beer crates for all I care and I’d be happy listening to him make that guitar sing.

Almost every tour they've ever done has pushed the boundaries of what is possible in live performance. Oooh Dos” chanted by the crowd. Bono wondering “why we’ve never played Madrid before” Opening Acts UB40 and The Pretenders collaborating on “Red, Red Wine”, The Edge’s slow crescendo on the opening song Where The Streets have No Name. Everyone singing along to With or Without You. Oh, to come of age in the time of Larry, Adam, Bono & The Edge.

Joshua Tree was the first album I ever bought, when I turned 13. They were the first band I ever loved. I saw them live in 1997 on their Pop Mart tour but lost track of them after that. This makes me want to revisit their discog and spend some time with their work that I never got to know.

The first time I went to Vegas was for a job interview in 1986. I was 21 years old. I had been to Reno many times but as a country boy I did not like cities, and I had my thoughts of sin city. I drove down from Chico, then Reno, going fast in a Datsun 280z on highway 95. I arrived tired, a long solo drive, the traffic was terrible, it was hot, the military base jets flying overhead and this song, Bullet the Blue Sky was coming in loud on the FM radio. I totally remember that day. ☘

Named after California, then we watched the red rocks video, Colorado, and then this video comes out Las Vegas, they really formulated a plan (or their management did) to embrace America. such as MLK and they really made a deep connection with the American audience, which propelled them to stardom beyond stardom.
