I guess in 2D land you could do the same thing: (x, y) = (x1, y1) + lambda*(x2, y2). You can even easily convert from the standard y=m*x+b by setting x1=0 and x2=1, giving (x, y) = (0, b) + lambda(1, m). You can set x1=0 because in 2D every non-vertical line crosses the y-axis at some point and you can use any point on the line for the position vector. You can set x2=1 because every non-vertical line has a gradient/direction with an x-component for which you can find a suitable scalar multiple for the direction vector. This also means that if you set x2=0 then the vector form can handle vertical lines as a nice bonus.
