    I am a university professor who has gotten good reviews for my courses. But I am learning so much from Eddie - there is no ego, no smug, no sarcasm. It's all designed in service of students and treating what they are learning as the most important thing at that moment - I wish all teachers can be like this, and I will certainly evolve, taking inspiration from him.

    This is really well presented and explained. I really like how you took the question a little further. Great job!

    Simplified method of going in a proportion from 1 point to another (points A & B, proportions a & b):
    From Eddie's method: X=A+(B-A)*a/(a+b)
    X=A*(a+b)/(a+b)+(B-A)*a/(a+b)
    X=(A*(a+b)+(B-A)*a)/(a+b)
    X=(A*a+A*b+B*a-A*a)/(a+b)
    X=(A*b+B*a)/(a+b)
    Yes, it's that simple. Cross-multiply the points and proportions, and divide by the sum of the proportions.
    In Eddie's example: (A*7+B*5)/12
