Propagating giant pothos from Florida

  • In January, I attended the TPIE (Tropical Plant International Expo) in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and I decided to bring 2 large golden pothos cuttings from a friend. I brought the largest, most beautiful cuttings I could find 🙂 ⠀

    I decided to propagate one in water and the other one in soil. The water propagated one was in my south-west facing window, getting direct sun from 11:00 until 16:00.⠀

    The soil propagated pothos was under a grow light, on a 16-hour photoperiod, getting between 10,000-15,000 lux of light (1,000-1,500 foot candles). When soil propagating, you should keep the humidity around the plant high, ideally 70%-80%. Humidity levels influence transpiration. Optimizing moisture during propagation is a balancing act between water absorption and transpiration. When the humidity in the micro environment around the plant is low, transpiration increases, causing cuttings to wilt faster. Until roots form, and roots have the ability to replace lost water, it's important to minimize water loss⠀

    My humidity dome is too small to house such a large plant, so I used plastic bags. I could've probably thought of a much better way to do this, but hey, if you have any suggestions for the future, do let me know 🙂⠀

    After a little bit less than a month, you can see both plants rooted well.⠀

    Let me know how you feel about the music, and whether you prefer listening to music or the sounds of soil mixing and potting 🙂⠀

    PRODUCT THAT I USE AND LOVE THAT CAN SPEED UP PROPAGATION (affiliate links):
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Heat mat (place underneath the propagation vessel to warm it up, can cut propagation time in half)
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - an air pump provides a constant inflow of oxygen which speeds up propagation. Oxygen is crucial for healthy root development
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - humidity dome for soil propagation
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - rooting hormone, for plants that are not easy to propagate
    FERTILIZER
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Dyna Gro fertilizer, excellent for tropical plants, contains all 16 minerals houseplants need
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Espoma succulent and cacti fertilizer
    LIGHT METERS
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Dr. Meter light meter, the only way to know that you're providing your plants with sufficient light
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Most light meters apps are incorrect, this one has been pre-calibrated for a variety of cell phones
    IF YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH NATURAL LIGHT, YOU CAN USE GROW LIGHTS TO SPEED UP PROPAGATION:
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - 60W Sansi grow light (for large plants)
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - 15W Sansi grow light (for smaller plants)
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - 15w Sansi grow light
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... cable for Sansi grow lights
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - shelf grow light
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Soltech Solution's 20W light - Soltech Solutions grow lights

    Why did you put the leaves in a ziplock bag?

    hi there, recently I found a huge body of pothos.. in the trash bag.. with those leave as big as your videos. but most of them is getting damage (maybe that's why they threw her away). so I decide to rescue her, it's so beautiful in fact. I will follow the instruction hope it goes well.

      Good luck! Make sure to check thoroughly for pests, if a plant was discarded, often times they could have pests, so be careful. You don't want to infect the rest of your plants

      You have to get them to climb instead of hanging down. Plus lots of light 🙂

    Why did you put the leaves on plastic?

    • @MrHouseplant
      @MrHouseplant  4 года назад +3

      To keep the humidity high, because this helps reduce evaporation/water loss from the leaves :)

    Whats the update on the plants? Are they both doing well? Did you also wrap the leaves of the plant in water?

      I have potted the water propagated one in soil just recently. I posted the video last week :) The other one was attacked by mealy bugs, I had to get rid of it

    What kind of fertilizer do you use for pothos?

    • @MrHouseplant
      @MrHouseplant  3 года назад

      I use fertilizer that I use for all foliage plants, with a 3:1:2 NPK ratio: www.mrhouseplant.com/recommends/dyna-gro/ (Amazon)

    Hello! Awesome video!! I recently got a cutting and they told me to propagate it in sphagnum moss! Is that okay?

    • @MrHouseplant
      @MrHouseplant  3 года назад +1

      You can propagate in sphagnum moss. I am not a fan of that, as it's very difficult to get the cutting out of the moss later. The roots will get so entangled into moss :)
