Yeah, other people, whose music is worst(in your opinion) are more popular. That is very true. "most artists" is a great disservice to music. It comes from a position of "my taste is underprivileged". True she's a rockstar for her talents, but the music we see is barely considered popular. Here’s my break down of Electra Heart parts1-11. Your interpretation might be different than mine but this is just my opinion.. She decided she didn’t want to live her life with fear and hate. In part 1 fear and loathing, she’s seen cutting her dark hair. Then she gets the blonde wig and falls in part 2 radioactive trying to live a different life style. In part 3: archetypes, she talks about who she’s going to be, a totally different person living a life style not fear and loathing. Part 4 Primadonna girl, she’s going to be the girl who wants it all, boys, clothes- everything is a new lifestyle to the electra heart persona. She also has blonde hair but her roots are dark in part 3-5 which to me translates into how she wants people to see on the outside she’s this certain person whose trying to live this in love, trophy wife, lavish life, life style (the blonde ends) but inside of her, she’s still in fear and loathing (her dark hair roots) In, Part 5: Su-barbie-a she bored of being in love and being a little housewife. Then skipping to part 6, Power and Control, she’s trying to regain power and control in her life, she’s sick of giving all of her self and not really getting much from him. (note how in this video her roots are growing out a lot, the darkness creeping back up on her.) Part 7 her old self is coming back, she’s being a heart breaker and not giving a fuck anymore. & She’ll teach you how to do it too. (her hair is completely dark, her old self has returned, and her style in this is so dark themed like fear and loathing) Part 8: E.V.O.L she’s recovering from trying to change up her persona. She’s back in fear and loathing mode, but telling the story of how love fucked her up when she was trying to live a different life style. Then Part 9: State of Dreaming is completely back to her old ways. When she was trying to change her self in part 2-5 was her state of dreaming. Bringing up her heart break and how silly she was to try to fall inlove and live differently comes Part 10: Lies. She can’t be the primadonna house wife for him because it’s just not her, hence the whole, “No i’m not the type that you like.. why don’t we just pretend.” She just can’t believe this didn’t work. Finally part 11: Electra Heart, she wants to just go back and try again. But she knows the darkness in her will always shine through the fairy style life style she tried living. Who she really is, the fear.. the darkness is just something she can’t get rid of.

Sorry for my bad English, I am not a native speaker but I wanted to share my opinion on this track. Somehow, I feel Marina sings about our everyday state of mind in which we are driven by a need to be likebale, wanted, successful but we are missing the true nature of us as human beings. Most of us are living in a dream and would "sell our sorry soul" for these down to Earth things like fame and material things because we think those kind of things will bring us happiness and fullfilment when actually we need so much more love and compassion to be fullfiled human beings. I feel like Marina has invented this whole Electra Heart alter ego just to reach more people with her message. Because being more commercial makes you easier to reach more people and that's what she did with that album before going back to what she really actually is on FROOT. You could say Electra Heart was in a way a sort of sacrifise Marina did. Now she has the possiblity to reach people whose eye she cought with Electra Heart and who might follow her work now as well. As a human, she can't do much to help people to open their eyes, wake up from the "state of dreaming" and see which things actually matter in life, but she sings from her heart and only hopes that her message will reach at least someone's heart. She knows "her time is near" and that frightens her in a way, as life actually is compeletely inpredictable and you can die in a second (she is aware of that fact and wants you to be aware of it too) so you shouldn't take it for granted and spend it living chasing material things. She even says that her life is a play, and if you think about it (I think Shakespeare also said that), life is nothing more than a play in a way, don't take it too seriously because it'll end up one day and it won't matter how much money have you accumulated or how many diplomas you have on your wall, but it will matter if you have done something to help other people on their journey of self-realization in life. Maybe this sounds really trashy and new-agey, but I feel it that way. Just my two cents. :)

Not only that but Marina's commercial longevity is very impressive, for almost a decade she has been consistently charting top 10 albums and top 40 singles worldwide. Melanie is around 3 years into her official career. She like most other artist will most likely not maintain the long term success Marina has had along with her other contemporaries like Florence Welch and Lana Del Rey. Also more subscribers does not mean more popular. Melanie has more subscribers than Madonna, Kelly Clarkson, and Alicia Keys but she sure as hell is no match for there level of commercial success. Sorry for my bad English, I am not a native speaker but I wanted to share my opinion on this track. Somehow, I feel Marina sings about our everyday state of mind in which we are driven by a need to be likebale, wanted, successful but we are missing the true nature of us as human beings. Most of us are living in a dream and would "sell our sorry soul" for these down to Earth things like fame and material things because we think those kind of things will bring us happiness and fullfilment when actually we need so much more love and compassion to be fullfiled human beings.
I feel like Marina has invented this whole Electra Heart alter ego just to reach more people with her message. Because being more commercial makes you easier to reach more people and that's what she did with that album before going back to what she really actually is on FROOT. You could say Electra Heart was in a way a sort of sacrifise Marina did. Now she has the possiblity to reach people whose eye she cought with Electra Heart and who might follow her work now as well.
As a human, she can't do much to help people to open their eyes, wake up from the "state of dreaming" and see which things actually matter in life, but she sings from her heart and only hopes that her message will reach at least someone's heart. She knows "her time is near" and that frightens her in a way, as life actually is compeletely inpredictable and you can die in a second (she is aware of that fact and wants you to be aware of it too) so you shouldn't take it for granted and spend it living chasing material things. She even says that her life is a play, and if you think about it (I think Shakespeare also said that), life is nothing more than a play in a way, don't take it too seriously because it'll end up one day and it won't matter how much money have you accumulated or how many diplomas you have on your wall, but it will matter if you have done something to help other people on their journey of self-realization in life.
Maybe this sounds really trashy and new-agey, but I feel it that way. Just my two cents. :)

I used to see this as a really sad song cause I'm a pretty depressing person and turn everything into sadness, but then like. Whenever I do my quizzes or tests online for my college classes I always listen to Marina and just listen to what it takes me to on auto-play. And every time I finish them I turn it in and I get that wave of relief that everyone gets. and ever since I've found this song, I've counted at least 5 times this has come on just as I touched the 'send quiz' button.
