No sooner did I get my new power probe than I needed it for this window repair. I've always liked this tool for this exact kind of repair as it makes it very easy to verify the operation of a 12v component with just the push of a button and now with the addition of the volt meter it's even better. I know the 'beeping' can get annoying but you can turn it off when you want but it's nice when you're working by yourself and are trying to verify a signal, listen for the noise and you're good. I hope this video gives you some insight into this type of repair I know a lot of people can get overwhelmed when confronted by an electrical repair but if you have a good wiring diagram and the right tools it's a good start to a successful repair.

This video saved me a lot of money, I bought a new master window switch for my 2006 Element since I really couldn't test the old one. Worked great. Saved the trouble of replacing window motor regulator. Thank you.
The switch in my Cavalier is dirty as all heck so I’m going for the easy score and replacing the switch and just got it today. You rock, Eric!!!
Many auto window lifters are implemented on the basis of current. When current sudenly raises, this means that window reach some end (low or top) so some circuit get this signal and opens de circuit. You have ground in both pins when the window is not in use is just because shortening the motor to ground act as a brake for the window and motor itself. If not, the window will keep running a bit after you depressed the swiitch. Shortening the motor avoid this behaivor.
just in case people are interested when the switch was staying on due to failure of the auto down function the switch itself was heating up. this resulted in damage that caused the switch to not be able to carry the amps rquired because it had to much resistance to allow proper current flow.
I find the gem in the details. Eric, I listen beyond the general topic, for me the trouble shooting process you verbalize is the gem. Nice job Eric, this thing (video), you do well.
Awesome video, thanks for sharing. I'm going downstairs right now to check. Last time on my rear windows, my "repair" guy removed the motor and tweaked stuff inside, now is dead again. Now is my passengers and the other rear window... I hope is this!
I love the little things about your channel...like how you show yourself trying the window switch without turning the key on. Most people would edit that out but the truth is, we all do stuff like that all the time. Keep it real my friend :)
Just wanted to give you a great big 'THANKS' for this video. I have a 2004 Chevy Cavalier and had a problem with the passenger window - it would not go up. After watching your video I removed the door panel, disconnected the electrical coupling to the motor and using my volt meter was able to determine I was getting voltage at the connector - but was it enough current? I made an electrical cable and connected it to the battery - window went right up. I will replace the switch on the console.
Power probes are AWSOME DUDE!!! I want to get one so bad! A window motor is going to be the cause of me getting 1 I believe
Had a similar problem with my mother's 97 Audi A3. The windows live their own lives, and goes up and down as it wants. It's either the central locking or the microswitch in the key-lock. Fingers crossed for the second option.
Wish I had of watched this video first before watching a dozen so-called backyard mechanic ones that told me nothing. Thanks Eric
Our friends at Wells make that switch and you can purchase it at RockAuto, if you want to avoid the dealership [prices]. On GM applications, if you replace the regulator/motor rivets with a nut and bolt arrangement make sure to use Locktite or they will vibrate loose over time! Great Video as always!!
Wow, Power Probes been around since the mid-90s. No one in the motorcycle world seems to know they exist. Strange. Thanks for the great video!
Eric you are a friggin genius! You just saved me from replacing a motor!!! The voltage was there but the current sensing circuitry was limiting my window to go up. Bad switch. It would have been the last thing I replaced. THANK YOU!!!
Would your window also go up an inch or so and then stop, so you would have to wait a few minutes and then go up another inch, etc? Please let me know, if so! I don't want to shell out the $$ for a new motor if i don't have to!
sorenalways Initially it was only going up/down 2 inches at a time and then went to it went down and would not go up. Using a jumper I was able to get the window to go back up so I knew the motor was working. The switch takes all of 2 minutes to replace once you have a new one. I found it online (new) for @ $22.50 on ebay.
+sorentalways I'm having that same problem with my passenger window, I have a coupe. My drivers side window is stuck open a couple inches as well =.=
i loved Cavaliers, I had a 1987 with a 4 cylinder. It took the first summer to install a Boston Acoustics speakers and a ADS 300 watt amp. Most of the summer the back seat was out as I installed speakers, subwoofer, and the amp. I had 198000 miles on it when the engine finally blew.
I kind of made my own power probe. It only has a red/green LED with 1K resistor to tell polarity, and a switch to short the probe to either ground or B+. An old headlight limits current to about 2 amps to prevent releasing the magic electric smoke.
Occam's razor: The simplest solution is usually the correct one. Cup holders invite people to spill liquids in cars [especially my wife]. Center consoles [and their switches] get the majority of spillage, so I have done this more than once on my wife's car. Getting interiors cleaned at car washes hide many of the clues indicate liquid damage to switches.
Good video. I'm glad you mentioned amperage. Digital meters can show proper voltage, but once a load is applied the voltage will drop too low - loose/bad connections are a pain. Does that tool also load test the circuit? Take care.
Ive had this problem with a frends car, it was the door wire that was in the external gator, the wire was only hanging on by a few strands.
Ive allways used a multimeter and sometimes a test bulb as a load.
Smashing tutorial :-)
FYI, it might be easier to drill out the rivets than to grind them... this is especially true for pop rivets.
I love my Power Probe too, saves time trying to isolate the problem.
Glad to see you're working on customer cars again, I was getting worried that your clients had disappeared after you moved.
Once again, cool video!
well at least he didn't remove the EXHAUST PIPE to fix the key.
no biggie Eric .. you are the man !
I love how the new switch was clearly an updated version, it had words on the lockout button. Either that or they were very worn off on the old one.
I'm experiencing the same problem. I've replaced the switch and there was some power to the passenger rear window. It would go down a few inches then stop. I tried to get it back up.... no power. The next day, there was some power for the regulator to move, then a few minutes later it was successfully closed. I don't know what the problem could be.
We had similar issues with our driver door. Perplexing. When the window finally quit, it turned out to be a cable jam. We replaced regulator, and now window goes up, but not down. So then I bench checked the master switch for power out, and of course driver down is no power. My question is, is there some "limiting" circuitry in that switch that maybe got fried when the cable jam happened? And was potentially causing an issue (and cutting the power off) just prior to the cable jam? This 'magic' curcuitry, that I can find no info about....does it function for ALL the windows (ie, it could be messing up your rear window), or only the driver window? And what situations cause this limiting circuitry to cut off the power? I can really find no info about this....
@@coeneschamaun1735 I'll check what you just said. Every piece of information is valuable.
My '00 Cavalier has close to 180,000 miles on it, and other than small things here and there it is just starting to show it's age, and that's only because a tranny cooler line blew which caused a sudden loss of transmission fluid. Even having going through that, the transmission still shifts fairly decently.
The only car I've had that was more reliable was my '96 Subaru Impreza, which had 304,000 miles on it when it finally gave up.
My 2002 Buick Park Avenue had a problem with the power windows, door locks, and mirrors not working on the driver side. After about (2) two months I noticed the button on the bottom of the module for window lock began to flash so I pushed it and they worked for about (2), months or so. Then, it stopped working again. Then, the passenger side power windows, and door locks stopped working. I have a circuit tester power probe KM50 that should be here any day now. Do you have any idea what the problem is? To remove the module in the door panel I have to depress the tabs? The fuses on the automobile is difficult to locate. Thanks! I subscribed!
I've got a power probe. It paid for itself damn quick. I'm looking at the master set with a few more bells and whistles. Great vid man. :)
I know you don't reply but i hope you do read it,
I had this problem on a VW Lupo. which torqued its motor round at the end and burnt it self in auto mode. Now we went to the dealer and they said it had to make it learn the end of the run. by putting it all up and then press and hold it down for 10 seconds twice.
Supposedly it had a learning thing.
Hi Eric, Have a question! What is better: PP!!!, PP4 or PP HOOK? And for which purposes? I mean that it is obvious that they are different tools, but majority function are the same. It would be great to hear some comparison. Thank you.
if there slow its probably not the switch its either the motors are wearing out or the tracks for the window are all gummed up with dirt and the motor has no grease left i would advise using some silicone spray lube and some grease for the motor
This is my first car and have done next to no mechanical work. Easiest way for me to explain the issue is to give you a scenario. Window will start in the down position so its all the way down. I hit the up button and the window goes up about half way then stops. Then i have to wait a few minutes and can retry pressing the up button and it may go up a few more inches before stopping again.
Have any experience with this type of issue?
Thanks for any advice you can give me. I appreciate it.
Stupid question, but would a digital multimeter help you find the problem to this job?
thanks for turning the sound off on the power probe why does the window do down but there it still glass sticking up in the corner ?
my electrical/electronic systems operation and service class starts tomorrow.. gotta get a power probe :)
rewind Eric , always check the switch first , use a multi meter and a piece of wire ?
Awesome video great information my daughter have one and driver side window goes up then stop I half turn key power on off and pull on window. I think its motor.
ok what do you suggest buddy?
I want that tool! I am a retired Mechanic. I have use jumper wires to test the system like you have. I still do from every brand cars with electrical problem. What brand is that test light? Snap-On?
One thing I do when I have a good voltage reading and suspect an amperage problem is to load test the circut with a lightbulb that I attached test leads to. If it doesnt light up when the switch is activated but shows good battery voltage on my dvom, it means there is a problem for sure in the circut. It only takes one small strand of wire to flow voltage and fool a dvom but it wont hold any amperage
Ya why not? Volts, amps ohms, checking resistance across the switch would be a way. Not saying the Power probe isnt cool which it is, im just going to grab some jumper wires.
Eric can you make a video on how to use the power probe to its max??? is an awesome tool!
rockauto.com, all you'll ever need. Using them for years.
So what causes it to jump out of the track because I'm having this issue now I've realigned the track multiple times but every time I put the window down it drops it back out of the track and goes cattywampus in the hole pretty much the back end of the window stays up high while the front end Falls low
Nice video, thank you. I'm having trouble finding wiring diagrams for power windows in 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. Can you help? I'd like to figure out how to bench test the switches. I also tried to jump passenger rear window with 9 volt battery, but I'm not *certain * which are the motor wires (I haven't pulled the panel yet) There are 5 wires. Thank you for any help. PS. I'm just too broke to take car in to the shop, really trying to learn something about repairs.
A 9v battery isn’t powerful enough to raise your window. Use a jumper wire hooked up to the car battery.
POWER PROBE FTW!
Thnaks again, Eric. There's no telling how much money you saved me simply by providing me with the info I needed - and it was right on the money! Same exact problem. Dude - I am so grateful!
Great Place for a switch assembly.. right where people spill stuff. Genius.
That power probe sounds really annoying.. I'd rather use my meter.
Good video though.. I love electrical diagnostics!
hey man! i really need help! ive been trying to fix my s10 blazer 1988 2.8 i know is pretty old truck but the rmp is like at 3000 flat.. and i try everything i look at hoses in the engine everything fine even the IAC is new... is fuel injection with carburetor 220 on it do you have any idea if that has to do with lifters or something inside ? or hoses in the transmission ? or egr? or the vacuum switch.
depends, if ur motor works yes, if so drag the window up with pliers and pull the switch up to hold it in place
Any tips on getting one up without fixing it. Like, I just want it up to keep the rain out. I'm broke, so fixing it isn't really an option right now.
Power probe would have made it easy to check the integrity of the wiring. Pull switch out and power the motor from there. That would be a more definitive test before buying an expensive part.
So if i want to test for power, I don't have to hook my ground as its already connected to the battery. But if I want to supply power to something that takes 12v then I need to also supply a ground.
2005 and 2006 Jeep Liberty has this issue like CRAZY. Chrysler will repair for free.
you can check a fuse easy with a volt meter just set to dc volts if you get a reading like 12 volts the fuse is bad and there may still be a short
Wicked easy? Ha, you ever lived in Massachusetts? Great diagnostic work on the power window switch.
i use power probes alot and when you use it you should start the vehicle, kills the battery alot
Assuming that you are holding the button on the up position and not hitting it, and its not working, it could be a bad switch or the motor giving out, also it could be a broken wire. I would start at the beginning: check the switch, check the the voltage at the connector (like Eric did in the video) n then take it from there. There's really no way of telling you whats wrong with it as there's more than one reason why your window is doing what its doing
I had my 2002 rebuilt its a z24 would that be the same only thing I needed left Last question I had all 4 of my windows using the switch run down super slow and slow going up what could also cause that?
How much the probe 3 goes for now?
This is irrelevant, but something that ive always wanted to know. Since you're a honda tech, you can probably help; why did the older hondas (civics) In reverse make that zing noise?
Off topic!!! It is difficult to search for videos on her machine, so if You divide sections on the brand of cars, would be cool.!!!!
Sincerely, Andrew!
Great video ...I had some sucess with cleaning switch but not easly to do.....bob
how and what did u use to clean it up ?
apatheticempathy
great video, as always, love that audio you use in your transistions. is that a drink holder that pulls out of the console? either way, it looked like beverages may have been the root cause. i had a similar problem with my dakota, changed the switch ($40), worked fine for weeks, it started screwing up again. turned out to be damaged wires between the door and the jamb.
Eric, I have a 02' Pontiac Sunfire and was wondering if you did make a video on how to remove the the motor assembly for the power window for the driverside?
erick do you know a way to repair the gauges on mi 03 cavalier that i recently bought but the gauges don't work. the tach does move when the engine is running but not really a correct reading.. speedo, temp and fuel do nothing.. just wanna know before buying a new cluster..
Nice job, The Powerprobe is a great tool, Love mine as well your not alone lol
wonder if its worth it for a junk yard switch ?
Auto-down windows are always a problem. I've seen Land Rovers with that where the window just randomly goes up and down as you drive.
Hey Eric the car guy what is your take on the powerprobe ec2000?
Cavaliers are a wiring mess. My dads 04 had a dim passenger side headlight...had to disect the entire harness and found a broken wire that links both headlights together, and provids another 5V to the dim one.
Next was the driver door dome. open circuit all the time, replaced the switch that WAS bad, and still no avail. Tore the entire dash apart to find a broken wire under the kick panel. This would cause the radio to stay on for 15 minutes, and drain the battery in the winter.
MY Mazda cx9 all of the power window mirror does not working as well the switch light too. Please help me find out thanks
Like the probe, I will look into one, thanks guy.
Good job Eric
is it just me, or does this seems like half a diagnosis. would have liked to checked the switch before just replacing. could have tested volts in and out of the switch. could have even used that power probe which was already set up. I just like to be 100%
some cracking videos on here though. good work eric.
do you know how to fix a window module or switch
on 05 or newer chevy models???
I had a problem with my 1997 Pontiac Trans Sport power window on the drivers side. Should I post a video showing what did to fix it?
I have a 1998 honda civic , I just installed a new power motor regulator on the passenger side and it doesn't work. the window went up but it wont go down. its a two door, and i tried with both the drivers handle swich and the switch on the passenger. it wont work. please reply ,
thank you
another good video. lengthy but good
How change the door latch on cavalier driver side I think spring break latch wont lock spray with oil.
Did you check the gauges' relay?
question. power probe can show voltage, but can it show amps to ?
Hello, Eric; thank you for your video. How do you compare the power probe 3 to the loadPro for voltage drop test ?
Thank you
Mac
hey!i had trouble on my automatic window,it does't work anymore when you forgot the window's open and turn it on alarm and lock mode, its automatically windows goes up..pl's tell me what to do!!
Good information!!!! I learn so much from you Eric....
Sir my car i20 windows motor connector has 6 wires on it. How to get the wires for roll up and down windows?
good video I cured the problem by cleaning the contact with cleaner
where do you get a power probe at
I've yet to get a crappy video from you eric. Love you channel. keep up the good work man!
i am hoping that's all that keeping my window from going up, i have to play with switch. window never goes up when you need it too
buen videos gracias este aparato detecta fallas en tarjetas electrónicas como en aire acondicionado
Is there a way to put the window up manually?
4:05
So I don't have to use rivets? I could just use anut and bolt forever? (That would be so much easier!)
can u mack a vide on how to chek fuses in the the correct way iv seen so coreld mecanic chek them with and 12v light bulbs with clips jest to save the from taking the fuse out of the car not good there is a way u can do it with a volt meter can u macke a vid on that ??
Thank You...👍
How do I check it with a multimeter
Do you have a video for a 2002 cavalier without power windows?
could i buy your old switch from you i just need the button tops?
Hello. Where did you get that power probe from?
