    Thank you for making this video! For the longest time, I've tried to make villages after villages trying to survive and grow my city. However, I repeatedly failed to the point where I quit the game for about a year until I came upon this video. After following your step-by-step tutorial I've been able to make a growing city and it's all thanks to you. Amazing video, keep up the great work!

    One thing I've picked up is spacing, facing, and sequencing for speed on the first 9: 3 groups of 3, that get left space for the other 3 in the block. Benches right away.
    I would differ just from observing on the camp location - plan on it being the first village square around which will be town hall - where the builders come from, where to locate cart support construction - Town hall set to face street forming the spine of street running straight from square, two cart sheds facing the street beside the door to townhall, across the street facing it is the trading post, with a pair of booths, one each side of door, space for warehouse out back. Farm Granary are next facing pair away from the square, granary gets 2 booths like the trading post. Next out the fields T the street. Each of the 3 blocks of 3 houses can form a sword hilt with the farm-trade-gov street as the blade. Make sure central square is big enough for the big church and school if possible, or to locate the first tailor, weaver, oil maker, ect. If the blade is North or 12 the forestry-clay pit-charcoal-smith are at 2, housing spokes at 3, 6, and 9.
    Leg 3 has two houses facing the 3-9 street, one facing the 12-6 street.
    Leg 6 has two houses facing 12-6 street, one 3-9.
    Leg 9 two houses facing 3-9, one 12-6.
    A series of L's, sequencing their build so that the houses closest to the camp center get build first.
    Fields - 3 face 12-6 street, 4th faces 6 in the 730 position of the four fields - this is the hay-hemp field, with hay racks, and sheep shed facing 6.
    Will run and send a pic. Notice even in Alpha5 the normal windows-print screen screen shot method works unevenly compared to other games/programs - seems it doesn't work at all if game is on pause.
    Like to see them have a control-F9 function, like Stellaris has that hides the interface for nice pure screen shots of villages.
    Hope they eventually let us name our village or give us a pick of names like the original Pharaoh did with family names.
    One thing JC The Beard taught me was to make sure to know where the map entry is by ghosting the camp along the board edges, making sure you are not on the wrong side of the river, to avoid having to build a bridge to get trade - a little green square will show up when you move the camp over an edge line. Also make sure the same when/if building the new smithery to make iron from iron ore - which I'd not recommend.
    A little bit of evolution in thinking from my last posts on the other video, from watching this one.
    What is fascinating about this game is the period its set in and where - down to the date it starts 1721 - Peter the Great named and founded the Russian Empire in October of 1721. This is right after Swedish defeat in the Great Northern War. Knowing this is a game made by Ukrainians, I'm guessing that probably isn't coincidence. Nor the fact there's no military content on purpose as stated by the developer. Brings to mind an piece I read that summarized a Ukrainian ideal paraphrased "Having your own garden and trees, sitting-tending-peacefully enjoying that". People resting on the benches, having rest periods in a game. This game embodies that ideal, let's all share it a bit. The lighting, music, and overall visual tone is pitch perfect.
    Just finishing Orlando Figes short summary work on the History of Russia, which of course incorporates what is now Ukraine. Can't help but think how this relates to the tradition of the commune - the kind before the 20th century - can really get an appreciation from the village perspective on the unbalancing effects outsiders-taking crops, ect.

      @PatmosIV  Год назад

      Well I for one am looking forward to your village progress and seeing how things develop! Sounds like you are really putting a lot of time and effort and thinking into it!
      For me the printscreen works fine btw. But I guess that's different for everyone.
      I do know about the map entry thing. But it has never been a thing for me. Most maps don't have Iron Ore so building a smeltery is only worth it on the maps that do. Otherwise its much cheaper to just import iron.
      Well you have read up on your history! I don't think much in this game is a coincidence. Lots of things are well thought through and really helpful to the game and the experience. So hopefully the dev's can keep working on this game for a very long time!
      Thanks for sharing all this!

      @@PatmosIV Figured out my print screen problem - have to press the windows key first, then print screen key - works fine now even on pause. Started needing this sometime back when my Steam F12 stopped working.
      So my approach worked pretty well, got my nine by sometime in September with two working charcoal pits too. Still some refinement to work on - don't build the char pits UNTIL there's wood available. Need to refine selective cutting also. Figuring out how to get village Cross aligned can be tricky AND avoid non-square house plots. Sold on going to 20x50 field size. Might consider making my initial house groups to face a street axial to the spokes on the cross to further shorten walk distance.
      The square quite well. I built up my cart stock on it a good deal - something like 4 - this way I can always force maintenance on about 4 carts. Next time will build 4 sheds, but just order 2 carts for each to start. Bought metal parts to get more carts soon and early. Put stalls around the square. Square has Townhall & Trading post. Need to get my trading dock in sooner if I can. Wish we could set manager pay separate - had some trouble getting one of my women to take the farm manager job. Have to be more careful on how much I buy next time. Also, think I will space the camp slightly further from trees and make my house plots just a little bigger - more food, more square-space. I'll put together a pdf of this first run to 9 houses. Fun to watch the harvesting up close. This game is really makes me want to iterate to improve.
      Will be continuing to guide off your videos - 20+ years of gaming, I've found the Dutch punch way above size on contribution 👍. Probably can say the same about the Nordics also. Follow Steath17 some on GameLabs (Also Ukrainian devs with Darth Vader helping them of Darthmods fame) naval games - great sense of humor.

    at 29:42 it took me a few goes at deciphering what you were doing. I had to pause and rewind a few times before I figured it out (with the options for "Laborer by Cart" and "Carter" 😂 I hope these options will become clearer as I play a little more

    • @PatmosIV
      @PatmosIV  Год назад +1

      Haha well it can be a bit overwhelming in the beginning. But you can build Cartsheds where you can store 4 carts (they get build by the carpenter, you can order them by clicking the plus icons in the cartshed)
      Laborers (villagers without an assigned job that will do all shortterm jobs in the village) will use those carts if they can. If you open up that option, you allow a certain building to hire laborers with carts to transport stuff for them.
      The Carter is a building where you build carts and assign people to them that will then be the only ones to work that cart. They can also be hired by buildings if you check the box for the carter. But the carter needs 5 workers permanently and, while carts in the shed can be operated by any free laborer.
      I hope this clears things up a bit! Enjoy Ostriv!

    You can move clay pits these days.
    Also I find it odd this is even an issue to build 9 houses, since I build 9 houses + a farm in order to allow for new villagers as soon as possible. Not that it matters now days since making farm houses allow you to get the first harvest and trigger new villagers in the first year.
    I find the thatchery an odd choice early since the city start with a stockpile and I think you can build all 9 houses with the stockpile, all you need is wood and clay.
    The game is extremely generous with time for allowing to build the houses. Though I think speed is bugged, so simply don't speed up the game.

    • @PatmosIV
      @PatmosIV  3 года назад +3

      Thank you very much for your comment.
      Great to hear getting to 9 houses isn't an issue for you. Then you can give yourself a great start each time and build great villages.
      Unfortunately not everyone is that proficient with Ostriv. I made the video for those who requested it and do have some trouble getting to 9 houses. All I hope is that this video can help them get a better start.
      I choose to build a thatchery since the amount of resources needed per house differ a bit, since the size of each house is different. I've seen times where I ran out of Thatch. Furthermore the woman don't have anything else to do, so I'll give them work there and build up a little stockpile. And since there is enough time to get it all done, why not?
      I'm very happy for you that the game is so easy for you and you get it all done. This video is to help people who have a lot of fun gaming, but sometimes need a little help to get started or know a way to do stuff in a game. Which with several games includes me. That why I try to help people in this video, I need that kind of help sometimes to.

    • @PatmosIV
      @PatmosIV  Год назад

      Hi! Thanks for your comment! Sorry to hear it is not really working out for you.
      When constructing building there are a few factors to take into account.
      1. The number of builders. You assign them in the beginning in the main tent, later in the government house. The more you have the faster they build.
      2. Building resources. They have to get the building resources and transport them to the building site. So make sure in the beginning your claypit is close to where you are going to build. So keep they starting camp, claypit and also the forester close to each other so walking distance is as short as possible.
      3. Later in game having enough carts available will help speed up production because they can use the carts to transport more goods to your construction site at the same time.
      4. When you start the game, immediately pause the game. Then place the buildings like the forester, claypit etc. When you are happy with the placements, un pause. Otherwise you could loose half a month were nothing happens.
      I hope this helps a bit. Otherwise feel free to ask more!

    Yeah ty but mine still says “No market”

    • @PatmosIV
      @PatmosIV  2 года назад +1

      That is most unfortunate.. Here is what you can check:
      1. Build a market stall
      2. Assign goods to it. Most preferably those you buy with the granary from your villagers like cucumber etc) or stuff you have like potatoes etc.
      3. Assign a worker to it. It will collect the goods to sell at the marketplace from the granary.
      Then you have all you need for a working market.
      If you have all this and it still doesn't work, there might just be a little bug or something. But this should really be all you need.

      How about firewood? Well firewood is produced in the forestry. You can sell it in a market place. That really helps to distribute it around town. Building a few warehouses around town filled with firewood and a marketplace close by is a really smart thing to do. As long as your foresters can chop some trees, they will also create firewood.

      Don’t think I’ll do that. Why you want that?

    Started the first game-I didn't make enough houses and so I lost a bunch of families. The second game I made enough houses but ran out of food and lost a bunch of families. The third game I didn't make enough houses or food and lost a bunch of families. The fourth game I'm going to string up a bunch of peasants as an example to the rest of them.

    why do people stop looking for job ?

    • @PatmosIV
      @PatmosIV  Год назад +1

      People stop looking for a job if you lower their wage to much. Then they think its not worth going to work. In alpha 4 you could lower it as much as you want. In Alpha 5 that changed. It is a bit trail and error, but if you put normal wage on 1. And labor wage on 0,8 then almost everybody should work, especially in the beginning. You can go even lower, but then there is a chance some might not work. I hope this helpes!

    With the latest update Alpha 5 Patch 4 what would your initial Town Hall Economy settings be as there are new items as well as changes to the game?

    • @PatmosIV
      @PatmosIV  11 месяцев назад

      Good question. Did not have the time to look into that, but I guess it remains the same for now, since the deeper economic mechanics did not change.
      So probably set wages to 1.10. labor wages to 1.0 (and then on the farms etc. raise it to 130%, so laborers will go there first)
      lowers all rent to 0.15. lower the purchasing price for citizens to 20% and the price you buy it from citizens to 10%.
      Then set wealth tax to 5 or 10, and set the threshold to 30.
      Basically all will be cheap for them but they will also not be paid that much. This allows them to accumulate some wealth until 30coins and all above 30 will start to flow to your coffers with the wealth tax. This way I never have to deal with workers not wanting to work, rarely have to give money to villagers in support. all excess money comes to the villages coffers for me to use while trading. And of course just export Charcoal and some clothing or something for some additional funds. But having around 1500-2000 the whole game is perfect. Game is not about making you rich, its about building a functional town.
      So that is how I would do it, but there are many different ways that work! As soon as I'm back to full health, I will start working on an Economy explained video for Ostriv.
