Bruce toured with the Grateful Dead for awhile after keyboardist Brent Mydland died. Yes, that was Joe. And this is the same band behind The Way It Is, just the next album two years later.
The Range was his band when they broke out with The Way It Is, this song, Mandolin Rain, etc. He was also a member of The Grateful Dead from 1990 thru 1992. He is an exceptional musician and song writer.
he was with the other ones, the remaining dead members after jerry passed when i saw them in 97 and maybe 98, dont remember if he was with them both times or not.
Finally, Bruce Hornsby! So many great songs to check out: “Mandolin Rain”, “Every Little Kiss”, “Look Out Any Window”, and “Across the River”. He also wrote “The End of the Innocence” that Don Henley recorded and “Jacob’s Ladder” that Huey Lewis and the News recorded.
Try "The Show Goes On". He's still writing brilliant songs. Some of his later works are awe inspiring and his depth of playing and composition makes him one of the all time greats. Extremely underrated in an industry that ignores genius for fluff. His piano skills are pure Bruce Hornsby. No one sounds like him.
Yes, Joe from Ambrosia was a member of The Range. I saw them open for Michael McDonald back in the day and David Pack (guitarist for Ambrosia) was playing guitar for him. It was kinda wild.
The thing I loved the most about Bruce Hornsby & the Range was the album that had "Mandolin Rain" & "The Way It Is" on it had songs that were ALL practically good enough to be #1 songs!
One Of My Favorite Songs & Video That Hornsby Done! He Has Several Other Hit Songs That Are Excellent That Went # 1Mandolin Rain & The Way It Is!!! Keep Reeling In The Hits Bruce!!! Keep Rockin All Of Us!!! You Are The Greatest! Sincerely,William
This is my fav from Bruce Hornsby, this reminds so much of some really good times in my life! Love this song! Also, you mentioned Ambrosia, really like to see you look up the song "Can't Let A Woman" and react to it. Great mid 70's rocker that no one remembers by Ambrosia.
Loved his music since the 80s! This is great, but my favorite is "Look Out Any Window." Great song and eerily relevant to what's going in today. Harbor Lights is another favorite of mine (features Pat Metheny) and "Stranded on Easy Street" will make you smile😉
Bruce Hornsby is as great a person as he is a musician. Been lucky enough to see him live many times. First with The Range opening for a band called Grateful Dead, twice, then with just The Range at a couple of shows, and then when he was a short-term member of the Grateful Dead after Brent Mydland had passed. He is always upbeat, at shows, and he puts out a great vibe.
"Scenes From the South Side" is one of my go-to albums for a road trip. Bruce is a brilliant singer/song writer, plus a great musician. Love, love, love this man.
These are some of folks I grew up with in Williamsburg, Virginia. These were local people that always supported Bruce before fame. The ball court was at the College of William and Mary at the Blow Gym. Bruce's father played the clarinet though he couldn't play a note! Great family and a great town to grow up in back in the 70s and 80s.
Oh, my heart. I am a Virginian with lots of connections to eastern VA, Williamsburg. Bruce is a native and scenes from the area are in this video. Loved his music in the 1980s and it is timeless. Jamel, you must react to his huge hit The Way It Is… masterpiece and the lyrics are spot on. Bruce Hornsby is such a talent. And the band . Oh, did you know he performed with The Grateful Dead for a couple of years? Explore more!
Bruce has recorded like 5 different versions of this song. There’s the original with the Range, a live version with the Noisemakers, a bluegrass version with Ricky Skaggs, a live solo piano/vocal version, and a dulcimer version.
@rmhanseniii. The version of this song with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is just brilliant! Sounds like they recorded it "live" - that's real musicians singing and playing together in a room. And it sounds like they did it one take when they all cheer at the end! (RIP Randy Scruggs). Stay safe and well,
Yep, that's Joe from Ambrosia, an original member of The Range. The label tried to make Bruce drop The Range and sign as a solo act but he steadfastly refused. You should check out "End of the Innocence" by Don Henley of the Eagles. Don went to visit Bruce, and Bruce played a piece on the piano he'd been working on and gave it to Don. Don said he had most of the song written on the way home, and it became a huge hit. Bruce plays piano on it, and when it was first released many thought it was a new BHatR song. You can also find a great live version of End of the Innocence with Bruce, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin and Jackson Browne floating around RUclips. Another song Bruce wrote and gave to another act but later recorded for himself is Jacob's Ladder, which he gave to Huey Lewis & The News, and it became a hit for them.
So I’ve been a fan of Bruce Hornsby & his band , the Range since the 80s ..he also sits in with many other musicians. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him perform with the Grateful Dead many times♥️ and also as a solo act. Amazing musician. If you want to check out a completely different and amazing version of this song, listen to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Bands version..Bruce is actually playing the piano and singing ... 🎶🎶🎶🎶✌️
The only time I saw Bruce Hornsby was in 1990… He was a member of the Grateful Dead at the time. He was added to the band to play grand piano for that tour as a full-fledged member. Great show! And if I’m not mistaken… Branford Marsalis was in the band as a guest. Legendary
This was filmed in & around Williamsburg, VA where Bruce Hornsby lives. The large building toward the beginning is the Wrenn Building on the campus of the College of William & Mary where my BIL & SIL got married. I have ridden that ferry numerous times between Surrey, VA & Jamestown, VA Those were football players for W&M where I was a couple weeks ago watching a football game.
My old basketball buddy Bruce Hornsby. Played playground ball with him ghent area of Norfolk and Listened to him hon his piano skills at the Shack in Virginia Beach. Took my daughter to see him 30 years later. Great guy great musician. Love ya Bruce
Look up some Bruce and Bonnie Raitt together at Red Rocks concert. Bruce has played with so many people , he is a piano God. He plays with Bonnie alot. Look up "I can't make you love me" video. Great. I love Bruce On "That's Just The Way It Is" album. I worn it out. Listen to the words, Great song , great album....thanks Jamel. Gladys guys got to see the Dead. Peace
He had his dad in this video playing that clarinet, but he was faking it. Looks like a great dad he had. RIP Mr.Robert Stanley hornsby. Beautiful & a very exciting song.
It was a clarinet, and yeah he was faking it because you couldn't see his fingers moving. It's kinda sad, I'd love to have seen him playing the hell out of it, lol.
Bruce Hornsby always transports me back to the 80s...such a distinctive sound and killer chords. Thanks for reacting to this, Jamel, and spreading the word around!
I just love this guy, so down to earth and I believe that was his father playing the clarinetof. Such a great family and thanks for representing our town Williamsburg, Va. Rich and humble family.
I’ve been in love with his music since I first heard it when I was in junior high school. Every Little Kiss has been my favorite song since 1990 lol . I have all of his albums and he keeps making awesome music behind the scenes and on shows for tv. Truly an amazing artist!!!
I saw micheal mcdonald doing a doobie bros show years and years ago wearing shorts and a "bruce hornsby band" t shirt. Tight group of first class musicians back in the days
In the mid to late 80s Bruce Hornsby was a fixture on MTV and just about any radio station. I was lucky enough to see him play a concert on the beach in Daytona during spring break and it was phenomenal! I love his music and his ability to play them keys!!
As it’s probably been answered already, The Range was his first commercially known band. His later band was or maybe still is The Noismakers. Plenty of solo and collaborated efforts with all kinds of musicians and vocalists, etc scattered throughout his career and timeline. And also that stint with our Grateful Dead Brothers.
I am a keys player myself and have always loved Bruce's piano groove... yes!! Oh if you ever get back to any Billy Joel, check out Allentown, I don't see that one in the earlier reactions: ruclips.net/video/BHnJp0oyOxs/видео.html (the video)
The lyrics in this song are really deep. “While no one was looking on the old Plantation”….“She came back around like nothing really happened”…. “good enough to hire not good enough to marry”. Sounds like the rich old man’s daughter was sleeping with a worker on the farm!
Precisely his idea. It's pretty common in the VA/NC area for social segregation. When a wealthy person in those little towns links up with a working class person there's a small scandal
Bruuuuce! Such an amazing musician. His work with the Other Ones alongside Steve Kimock is some of my favorite post Jerry Garcia Dead. Check out the live version of Hillbillies on PCP by Kimock. Killer guitar work.
I can tell Bruce got his inspiration from playing and studying Gospel. I’m pretty sure he packed the church when he was on the organ and piano. He probably made the other church pianists really mad due to his skills.
I have loved this song since it first came out. It IS a catchy tune and it IS a fun video. But, just like The Way It Is, this song is about discrimination (regardless of what Song Facts says). Specifically it is about a sexual encounter between the daughter of a rich, staunch (stone-like) plantation owner (a thinly veiled reference to a white man) and a man who was "good enough to hire" on the plantation but "not good enough to marry" (a thinly veiled reference to a black man). Read those lyrics again. They are powerful. They also seem to refer to abortion before it was legal. "They sent her away not too much later." Then "Out in the hall they were talking in a whisper - Everybody noticed she was gone awhile - Somebody said she's gone to her sister's - But everybody knew what they were talking about." Thank you, Jamel, for continuing to use music and your own infectious personality to light the way forward!
Daughter was sent away to give birth and then the baby was placed for adoption Euphemisms like gone to her sister were commonly used in those days. Not sure about race as there were lowly white farms hands in those days as well.
This song's about a girl leaving home to have a baby after getting pregnant out of wedlock by a worker on her father's farm and then giving it up for adoption. This was common in the South many years ago. Some heavy stuff for a pop song.
Bruce is the man! Bruce was also a great basketball player he said he teased Allen Iverson for years after beating Iverson in a one on one game and Bruce's son played in the NBA.
When you have a video this fun with a melody that reaches the marrow of your bones and add in your reaction, ain't nothing better. Made. My. DAY to see you enjoying this. Thanks Jamel!
Bruce is in a class by himself. You should catch him with another who is by herself...Bonnie Raitt. There are some really great live performances by the two floating around.
Across The River! Do that one next! Please? Found your channel through Christopher Cross, btw, and now you are my fave channel! You have the kindest face, and your love for all kinds of music is great.
The gentlemen on the clarinet wasnt actually playing but that is Bruce Hornsby father. He was with him that day and decided to give him something to do since he was hanging out.

I could watch Bruce Hornsby play piano ALL day...😍
The Range was his band when they broke out with The Way It Is, this song, Mandolin Rain, etc. He was also a member of The Grateful Dead from 1990 thru 1992. He is an exceptional musician and song writer.

@@dominrael8658 Thank you.
I saw him play with the Dead after Brent Mydland passed away. 2 shows in DC and one in NJ. He was excellent as you would expect.
He wasn’t a regular member of the GD but did play several shows with them over a couple of years...
I saw him play with the Other Ones at Further Fest after Jerry died.
PLEASE do Bruce Hornsby's "The Way it is." It's a real thinker with a fantastic groove.
Great song
I think he reacted to the song already.
@@scapito Unless he did it and it was blocked, it's not listed.
“The Way It Is “ great song ❤️
Makes me cry because sadly it is still The Way It Is.
His best song is still Mandolin Rain, which is a beautiful one.
agreed. has a certain haunt to it that makes it stick..and tugs on your heart
Yes!!!
ABSOLUTELY SO
Especially the version from his solo tour. So haunting.
Agreed.
Bruce Hornsby doesn't always get the credit he deserves. Have been a fan of his for a long time
Finally, Bruce Hornsby!
Soooo right on, Clay. 👍
Amen. I haven't heard a long I disliked by him yet.
"Lost soul" "FIELD OF GRAY"
Forgot about Look Out Any Window!! Great suggestions
You have a hell of an eye, brother. member Joe Puerta of Ambrosia was on bass!
Bruce Hornsby was in Ambrosia for a brief moment.
Great song! Hornsby is a BEAST on the piano in this song. The whole album is awesome.

Agree! One of my favorites!
Yes, Joe from Ambrosia was a member of The Range. I saw them open for Michael McDonald back in the day and David Pack (guitarist for Ambrosia) was playing guitar for him. It was kinda wild.
"Every Little Kiss". Really paints a picture of Chasing the American Dream in a by-gone era.
I love Bruce Hornsby! He was so popular in the 80’s. Great musicians 💙💙
The thing I loved the most about Bruce Hornsby & the Range was the album that had "Mandolin Rain" & "The Way It Is" on it had songs that were ALL practically good enough to be #1 songs!
I can’t make you love me by Bonnie is his best. Or even End of the Innocence by Don Henley. 😉😎
Absolutely love his style in his piano playing.
Need more Bruce songs: White Wheeled Limousine, Spider Fingers, The River Runs Low, Halcyon Days-- so many great ones.
So underated it hurts to think about it.
Spider Fingers is a great song as is the rest of the Hot House album

Yes! Perfect driving album! Especially in autumn, as many songs have a wistful, nostalgic quality to them.
@@patriciamorgan6545 That is exactly how I fell in love with album, a fall road trip. It always reminds me of autumn.
Saw Bruce Hornsby many Times in the early 90's when he was playing with the Grateful Dead.
Yup. Playing accordion on Sugaree. So sweet
I saw them live and they did the whole show by request. We wrote down our requests on cocktail napkins and passed them up to the stage Great show.
Whoa! That's so cool. Thanks for sharing. ✌
I saw them open for Steve Winwood...awesome show :)
I saw him in Ryman Auditorium in Nashville about 20+ years ago, he did the same thing. It was pretty cool!!
