Hi there. Thank you for making this video. It is such a difficult spread to understand and perform, so I appreciate the work and effort you have put in it. I wasn't gonna criticise and point out the things you (kind of) did wrong because I don't see myself in a position to do so, but since in your description you said I should, here goes some of the more important mistakes you made:
    * You put the four piles in the right order but you named them incorrectly. Y is the 1st from right, H is 2nd, V 3rd and H is the one on the left.
    * When counting, you should definitely count the card itself. For example at 12:42 you should have counted the Knight of Wands and ended up on the Ace of Wands.
    * You shouldn't change the placements of the cards, so do not take them out of the spread, but rather simply push them out a little to know they have been chosen. Crowley says you should make a story out of these cards but he doesn't say that the "not chosen" ones are useless. There are also some practitioners who use all the cards in the spread, not just the chosen ones. This is also important because of the next mistake:
    * I don't know why or how, but you skipped an important step: Pairing. You should pair the cards on either sides of the significator and make another story to fill in the gaps of the story you told using counting. For example at 21:33 the pairing would go like this: 6Disk/4Wands - PrinceSword/KnightSword - Death/6Sword.
These were some mistakes, that I believe were due to your misunderstanding of Crowley's text. I could challenge some of the choices you've made for parts that Crowley leaves out and how I (or other practitioners, including other Golden Dawn members) would have made different ones (for example the significator card, or using reverse cards etc.) but I believe that requires another video and another time. So again thank you for this video and I hope you continue making more of them :)
    P.S.
I think it would be better to put the name of the spread in the title or description. I've searched for videos on "Opening of the Key Spread" but this never showed up.

Kind of thinking the gaps in the book may be there to allow the conductor of the operation to form an individual way of making it their own. A big round table with a zodiacal wheel on it came to mind for me for some reason to help keep things in line. Definitely more to it than meets the eye.

    James,
I want to compliment you on such a fabulous demonstration! This only could be accomplished because of a studious dedication to learning the multitudes of individual fundamental principles and attributes encoded into each card as well as the multitudes of principles and attributes encoded into the entire system. You have been able to take that and couple it with an internal clarity and understanding of universal truths and and you are becoming unquestionably well read in this cosmic language and rightfully so. It was a joy for me to watch your demonstration thank you...

LOVE this! so fascinating to see... how interesting to think one would simply abandon the divination! it’s similar in geomancy... if the judge is the geomantic figure populus, you would be asked to come back and ask your question again at a later date. In Crowley’s case, it would be the reader who is wrong. In geomancy, it would be the reading. But to me, anything that comes up always has something to say. 😁

I am attempting this as my first reading with the deck after finally finishing the DuQuette book. I've gotten through the first operation. Lol. Question "what do I need to know about working with this deck?" It was in thr first pack of work and business.
I ended up with 10 cards. The magus, the aeon, ace of swords, princess of wands, 10 of swords, theemperor, the sun, 3 of swords, the chariot and 8 of swords.
    (Significator princess of cups)
I took it to mean that this deck will take me to the ringer but will elevate me to the next level, instigating a huge metamorphosis which will involve struggle and sorrow and great difficulties to overcome but also lead to victory and glory. With also a warning not to get to big for my britches. I feel like it was a pretty powerful readimg. (And that's just the first operation)... gives me a feeling of hold on to your seat! Big things ahead.

    • @ultravioletpisces3666
      @ultravioletpisces3666 3 года назад

Second operation, infuesswd correctly (second guess of 2and house-- value)
6 cards (and all but 1 were in the first operation.
10 of swords, 3.of swords, 4 of wands, princess of cups, the chariot and the emperor.
Gives me a really combatant kind of feeling. Like this deck is gonna go rounds with me. Lol. But ultimately I'll come out on top, with victory and sovereignty.

Counting the significator as “1” is also how I have learned, and seen demonstrated. The next count, “1” starts on the card you previously landed on. The only once I’ve seen who deviates from that method is Benenell Wen. She starts counting as “1” the significator, but subsequent counts, she starts numbering after the card landed on.

Nicely done video, but I think you have misunderstood Crowley's instruction on counting. He says to count the cards from the Significator, by which he means that the Significator is regarded as the 1st card in the sequence. What Crowley means is that when we count, we include the card we are counting from as the first card. In your example (at 12:45 minutes of the video), the Significator is the Knight of Wands, so the 4th card in the sequence from the Knight is the Ace of Wands toward which the Knight is facing. Crowley learned counting from his work with the Golden Dawn. If you have Regardie's book on the Golden Dawn, look on page 571 where he gives a worked example of counting. The Significator is counted as #1 in the sequence. Another minor point: Aleister Crowley pronounced his name as "Crow (as in the bird 'crow') + lee". I recall reading in one of his biographies that he often said to people who mispronounced his name, ""The name is Crowley, it rhymes with Holy. It isn't Crowley, that rhymes with foully." He is also quoted has having recited the limerick:
"My name it is Aleister Crowley
    A master of Magick unholy
    Of philtres and pentacles
    Covens, conventicles
    Of basil, nepenthe, and moly."

@@jamesfeeney623 I was thinking that too watching this
Like, in other readings, just becasue a reading subverts our expectations, most would consider that MORE reason to move forward, because that, obviously, provokes some intrigue as to why it's contradictory to expectations
Like why not continue? Maybe its not accurate, but perhaps it is, and its touching on something much deeper than what you'd immediately asume the situation is about
All this "abandoning the reading" stuff, is based on if the reading subvert's the reader's expectationts, but that is going to happen alot. Maybe not the majority of the time, but every now and then, but even those readings have had some truth in them for me. I only stop a reading if what it appears to be talking about is insanely off of what was asked, to the point where you question what the cards are even responding to. At that point, the cards have lost their utility because you have no idea of any sort of context

Hi and thank you so much for this great video! I am not sure about some things: HOW does the querent choose the significant card? is the reader shuffling or the querent? Thanks a lot!

I bought this tarot deck today to go with my other decks but I actually place this deck on my satanic altar tonight but I love this deck very much. Great video as well. Hail The Light 🤘😈🤘 p.s. I’m a big fan of Alister Crawley that help make this deck. And they say something about him in the mini book that you get in this deck.I actually like making my own tarot decks.

I think just choosing one of these exercises would serve to be beneficial without the drawn out process. Crowley always seems to be a bit eccentric and a bit overwhelming. No offense to anyone. But the exercises alone seem very powerful.

I agree! There are many readings where I will do the first operation and then proceed with whatever the reading entails. Love your thoughts, as always, Amy 💚💚

I think it's way more than necessary. Fun to try one time but... it's just crazy, shuffle, invocation, divide into 72 piles, count (the counting reminds me of cootie catcher counting and those tests we give each other in middle school to see who we will marry and were we will live) for 15 minutes and finally reduce to 4 cards that you actually interpret. Lol. It's just a *bit* much. 😉😁

Ahh, Aleister Crowley's master mad mind at its best! 😉 👍
Seriously, he had a brilliant occult philosophy, though wish he placed less of an interpretation of himself IN the Thoth deck.
Though, I do enjoy Lon DuQuette's references about Crowley in "Understanding the Thoth".

In this monotonous Celtic cross stricken world a video like this is refreshing 😂.

You lost me at "We aren't going to start the count with the significator"? This would is effect render any reading incorrect, as you would indeed count the significator in any instance. Hence the thumbs down. I would kindly refer you and your viewers to a video made over ten years back which may provide some clarity to you in this regard. Please see youtuber Nick of Cups OPENING OF THE KEY: First Op. Note: Linear Spread. Your swirl, if that's what you would call it, although a personalized touch perhaps would make pairing through triplicity rather challenging as well I might add.

This isn't to be mean I just find it funny how much you fail at making circles
Like I get why becasue you want all the cards to be in frame, while also still making a shape where you can see the order of the cards
But it still makes me laugh

Thank you amazing video and explaination. I have a question, Crowley says that the 4 piles on first operation represent "IHVH, from right to left", so, the final order sould be HVHI?
