Who is Thoth? The Egyptian God of Writing, Magic, the Moon and Fate who Became Hermes Trismegistus
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- Thoth was among the most complex and mysterious gods of the ancient Egyptian world. His origins lost to time, he would become the deity of writing, heka (magic), the moon and fate. He would aid in the resurrection of Osiris, intercede on the part of justice (ma'at) in the dispute between Horus and Set and go on to become worshiped at Hermopolis as Lord of the Ogdoad. In the Greco-Roman period he would be fused with Hermes becoming Hermes Trismegistus, legendary founder of hermetic philosophy and the occult sciences of alchemy, magic and astrology. Join me in this episode as I explore the origins of Thoth!

i read Budge's Book Of The Dead and jammed out to Nile, but my love of ancient Egypt was sealed by a DMT trip that was a lot of hieroglyphic theme imagery. 😂
Hello, I really like the tshirts but I was curious if it would be possible for the graphic tees, to have the front just the graphic with esoterica on the back by the shoulders? I know you likely can't just alter made shirts but just a suggestion going forward. Love your content doc
Who are some of your favorite black metal bands? I'm sure you've already heard Mephorash, but if not, I think you'd find them entertaining!
Thanks. Any book recommendations for the Heka practitioner? I have a couple.

Thoth seems to be a god of higher level human things; time, language, religion, etc, as opposed to elements or more natural things like fire or death. One of the most interesting gods I've heard of.
Like the ogdoad
@@TheEsotericaChannel I just looked them up; I think I need to do an Egyptian deep dive, this is way more interesting than Greek or Norse mythology!
Yeah....way, way more complicated
But he is associated with the moon, envisioned as the physical moon at times in fact
He was a curator of knowledge. Because of this, he became like the Solomon of the gods.
I am Coptic orthodox Egyptian I am loving every video you put here what an amazing content I am hooked. Keep up the good work Doctor
My mom used to have a tote bag with Thoth on it. She used it to carry groceries home, deliver old clothes to the Goodwill, and bring snacks along for the family, which she served out with grace and wisdom She called it her Thoth bag

Very cool and meaningful. It seems to have served your family well.

"Better is your profession than all professions. It makes men great." You're doing Thoth's work, Dr. Sledge. Thank you so much.

Mah boi Thoth! Let's go! Absolutely love this video, such a wealth of information. Thank you so much for this. Of all the gods that humanity has presented, Dhwtj is one of the few that I would absolutely be okay with existing. His whole domain of truth, knowledge, and wisdom is quite admirable for humanity. His mercy as a defense attorney when called on yet also his impartiality to be a judge is wonderful. There is an audiobook on Tehuti by Markus Carabas on Audible that I've listened to that seemed to be quite good. Keep on sharing the knowledge, Dr. Sledge. You're doing The Silver Sun's work.
Thoth does exist.. I can most certainly assure you of that my friend. I wouldn't say he is particularly easy to commune with, but if he so chooses, "The Egyptian" will come into your life when you are ready. He is there for everyone.
@@archaicsage4803 thanks. Just because you said it, it must obviously be true. Thanks for enlightening me.
@@archaicsage4803 whatever you want to believe is fine. I will say, most of these 'interactions' are far away from reach of most people. I only began to have a series of psychic experiences after learning some very advanced meditation practices over some years. 'Ptah', being the first egyptian, but many more, as discussed from Crowley and others. The universe is a very very old place, best to keep an open mind about what the 'actual' possibilities truly are..
Truly excellent video as always, Dr. Sledge. Invaluable material for all Kemetic reconstructionists and modern followers of Thoth.
Lets be honest, we are all impressed how he said Thoth in all the different dialectic ways 😅
Facts! 😃

Just want to say that the Emerald Tablets is the most excellent wisdom text I have ever read. Doesn't matter that it is not written on a wall in Egypt. And just have to say that all sacred texts are "channeled". And, just have to say, glad I found your channel.
“Thoth… the Atlantean… >sigh
At around 18 minutes I genuinely thought Dr Sledge had just ended the channel out of despair for a second
I once received an astrological card that had mine as mine (Virgo) Sept. 15 as Ma'at. I just came across this channel. It's very interesting. I study mythology and have a degree in Philosophy from Utah as well as a Teaching degree (M. Ed.) in Special Education, Teacher of Deaf and Hearing impaired. Now retired, I have returned to my research and writing project on Comparative Images of the Goddess in religion and mythology. I hope to complete a book in this lifetime. At this time I am finishing up my project on Indian (Indus Valley) mythology. Thank you for your work and offering of esoteric knowledge on this channel. When I am able, I will send some financial support.
very truly,
Staci
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this information and explaining the various etymological, symbology origins of information. Presented in this way, one can actually digest it without a bad case of indigestion, so to speak.
Another great video! I feel like it would be easier to forgive the 20th century channellers if it seemed like they had done a little more homework and reading beforehand (or sometimes any at all).
Why read hard books when you can just make stuff up?
@@TheEsotericaChannel So you telling me that Thoth wasnt as historically interested in manifest destiny, American exceptionalism, and white supremacy as was portrayed in "Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East"?
I'm gonna go with hell no
@@nelle8348 I remember my Mom having that book series growing up, but I never read it, is it really that unhinged?
@@kenshin4113 It is pretty bad. I think the first book mostly deals with cringy manifest destiny stuff and American exceptionalism, and the second book talks a lot about how the "Pure white race" is destined to spiritually educate the "swarms of the darker races". There is good evidence he never traveled to most of the places he listed and also just made up whole cloth all of the teachings in the book. My grandmother recommended the series to me as she had read it in the 60s and it is nightmare rollercoaster.
Really brilliant video. I went to the BM* several months back for their special exhibition on Egyptian hieroglyphs and having watched your videos really appreciated how much they gave me another richness in looking at the amazing collection of artefacts and manuscripts they've gathered for it. One that stood out to me at the time that I'm sure I would have looked right past is a little leaf from the Bodleian [MS Arab. d. 221 fols 48b and 49a] that has two great little illustrations of what I think must be Thoth/Hermes Trismegistus as he has a bird head. Which made me more interested in Thoth and... here we are again! Thanks for your work - I really appreciate your rigorous approach to such a massive subject, and the jokes for a bit of leaven.
*Yeah. I know. I ordinarily boycott it. I did feel guilty. But didn't stop me enjoying the hell out of the exhibition.
Best channel on YT right here folks. Let's do this oh yeah!!!
I appreciate the objective and reverent overview of a culture and religion that’s foreign to you
What a phenomenal episode, thank you Dr. Sledge for truly bringing the hammer on this one :) Surely this analysis will be written in the akashic records of Thoth the Atlantean!😬
I hope not because that's not real ;)
@@TheEsotericaChannel You're doing the Lord's work! The historical Thoth is far too interesting to be revised as one of the fictional Atlanteans.
I find your analysis in your field to be about the best out there on RUclips. I've tried to watch some of the folks you recommended but I prefer your channel. I really appreciate your book recommendations. I always encourage folks who are interested in esoteric studies to watch your channel.

Thoth, also known as Lord Soth’s younger brother. (Parents were an unimaginative lot. Aoth, Both, Coth, …Roth, Soth, Thoth [they stuttered when they gave him his name])😂😂😂
don't forget david lee roth
Thoth was self made
Brilliant, frank, analysis of these ancient Egyptian ideas and you’re correct that Egypt may have been the root of all subsequent religious, exoteric and philosophical ideas.
Absolutely awesome content as always!
Thank you kindly Sir 🙏
I love your scholarly skepticism. It's refreshing, and always gives a good giggle.
Great presentation! Thanks as always for further reading recommendations
@18:30 hilarious, I agree, thanks for the break. I was actually laughing out loud...
I think I get it now! I interpret Thoth as having or representing a sort of Cosmic Conservatism or stabilising power, his powers of writing and mathematics allow him to record events, organise and keep track of everything.
He is associated with the Moon because he is passive, which is why he always features in an important supporting character in the myths, he doesnt go out into the world and try to impose his will, he merely stands by and when things go out of balance he fixes them and makes sure everything gets back on track, which is why he heals the moon's shape, and restores Horus's eye and Osiris penis
Well that was far more interesting than I expected it to be. Kinda makes me wish the video was longer.
I really like these deep dives into the characters of mythology especially when you acknowledge the more fanciful writings :D which I feel lend even more credibility to your scholarly efforts. Thank you.
Your efforts to supplement esoteric information/interpretation with comedic elements are both noted and appreciated. This stuff is great 👍
I feel your moment of despair . AT the same time I love the screen that you put up for the moment of silence for the grief against the new age nonsense. Bravo! Thank you
Doctor sledge "the Hebrew hammer" taking us to school on the weekend. Does anyone remember that movie on comedy central? " shabbat shalom mfers" 😂

The number of parallels between Thoth and Christ are astounding. Law giver, judge, redeemer, the Word, etc.
Thoth must be my favourite now. I mean everyone who's curious about things like this probably feels pull towards a god of wisdom, knowledge and books. And I think everyone can appreciate the father figure of judgment for your doings yet at the same time a character who speaks for you in defense.
Thank you for pronouncing “ibis” correctly. Sincerely, Ms. Ibis.
Very enjoyable dive into the background of Thoth! I appreciate your smooth delivery of the interesting panorama of Thoth's influence and dominance. The comparative hyroglyphs are informative to the imagery and descriptions of Thoth. Also appropriate to see how magic seems to keep the Lord of Magic from being ever present and transmuting. Thank you!
Appreciate ur channel ❤️
Thank you for this video. It was very insightful!
Very informative

So… I just went from Tasting History’s video on Egyptian bread (which contains context of the civilization as a whole, and glimpses of everyday life) to this one… it’s both so much night and day but, they both share certain aspects, not just the regional & civilization context 😅.
Fascinating how תחות appears in the bible as meaning 'under'. Like in Jeremiah
Jeremiah 10:11
HEB: מֵֽאַרְעָ֛א וּמִן־ תְּח֥וֹת שְׁמַיָּ֖א אֵֽלֶּה׃
from the earth and from under the heavens.
And seems to have an etymological root of תַּחַת • (tákhat) which means "below" and "under".
Pretty dope for the God of the Underworld who's been famously tagged with the philosophical term "as above, so below"
That's Hebrew this is Aramaic
@@TheEsotericaChannelfair play. fascinating all the same
Fantastic research and compiling all the information. Thanks for this video, cheers
When I purchased my favorite tarot deck fifteen years ago, the witch (this was a magic shop somewhere in New Orleans' French Quarter) sternly corrected my pronunciation as "Toath" (as in tau omega theta), and "Crowley, rhymes with 'holy'". Regardless of how one feels about his occult work and legacy, Crowley was undoubtedly a very accomplished tarot reader. This deck has been the easiest and most lucid to read, and I always suggest it as well as the Book of Thoth and Rileys "the tarot book" for anyone interested in Tarot. This video, Dr. Sledge, has given me such a terrific amount of insight and information on Thoth mythology that I am sure I will rewatch it many times. Thank you so much for your work, your collaborations, and your patient lecture style. You are the best!
I love how you tell this story. Thank you. Your facial expression is impeccable! Love to be learning this way. ❤
Do Thoth and Khonsu have any deeper connection than just both being gods of the moon or is it merely that they are two deities presiding over the same thing but from different times or regions?
Not to my knowledge - Andrew over Religion for Breakfast did a great video on Khonsu, though.
@@TheEsotericaChannel awesome, thanks! i’ll definitely check that out.

I loved this. Thank you for helping me clarify so much by your deep diving. I bow down to your thoroughness.
Did Neoplatonism borrow from the Hermetica? Was Thoth an influence there? I always feel sorry for Francis Yates who got panned by some scholars for mistaking Hermetic for Neoplatonic thought. Especially with regards to Bruno. Your portrayal here of the ubiquitousness of Thoth makes me wonder, was she really so wrong?

This was an incredible video! Thank you!
Good stuff, as always.
Thank you for all the wonderful information and images of Thoth. I look forward to your other videos and appreciate hearing about the books you have suggested.
Carvings of Thoth often show a certain gracefulness or sensitivity which I think he shows himself when he was there to help Isis protect Horus and outwit her brother Seth after he killed Osiris. He shows compassion and does what he can to uphold justice and order against the forces of chaos. I have always wondered how Thoth became Hermes Trismegistus. I wouldn't say that Thoth alone survived, as Isis was very popular in Greece, Rome. Her cult rivalled that of Jesus at the time. A clay vessel was found in London suggesting there may have been a temple of Isis there for the worship by the Romans solders who were stationed there. She is still worshipped today by many and quite a few of her names (Stella Maris) and depictions were carried on by the Virgin Mary and Black Madonnas after Goddess worship was banned by the Romans and in Europe. I agree with you that much New Age stuff is not based on tradition or ancient writings and is ungrounded in tradition.
LMAO - glad you gained your composure there. Here's a virtual tissue, Justin. My curiosity is how Egyptian magic (and Thoth) affected the Israelites/Canaanites and other surrounding peoples. Always love your videos and Shalom Shabbat!

Nice Timing - just passed my final Greek exam, I'm officially a nerd now. The translation text was the excerpt from the Politeia talking about Thot.
Politeia? Or the Phaedrus?
@@TheEsotericaChannel Welp, well this is embarassing. It was Phaedrus, 274c-275b. In my defense though, the oral exam was based on the Politeia.

Eye of Heaven/Celestial Wheel/Abode of the Gods, this motif can be found on every habitatable continent on earth. Now they all vary in appearance, but it's the same story/event they're representing. I believe the universal "Golden Age" and this motif are related and has something to do with possibly a significant cosmic event witnessed by ancient man, and that these so called "myths" are actually a lost memory about a real event.
I didn't expect the subject I'm researching to come up in this episode, so I'm delighted, lol.
I became fascinated over this particular motif after making a significant archeological discovery on United States east coast a year ago.
That was the BEST check-out EVER!! 😅😂😂
Love your content! This was really informative. Do you know anything on Egyptian thought's influence on Greek philosophy? I have heard it stated, I don't remember the source, that many Greek philosophers would be trained in Egypt. That Plato was even taught in one of the Egyptian mystery cults. Just wondering if you have heard anything about that?

I really appreciate you beginning by explaining the pronunciation it's a really old word.
at 0:15, I hear many scholars use the argument of ''it is closer in time'' but I don`t think it is a valid argument for the following reason:
Ideas, culture and science evolves more and more rapidly due to the progress in communication:
- The invention of writing
- The printing press
- Telegram
- Radio
-Television
- The internet
ideas and concepts that might have taken centuries to develop might take a years or months today.
Thus, we must rethink timelines. instead of looking at time as linear, we might see it as an exponential curve.
Also, from foot to donkey to paths to cart to horse to wagon to railroads to cars/roads and airplanes.
My mind is as vast the ocean. Where as in thoughts are the waves.

It turned out with later study that the Egyptians used a pronunciation deliberately contrived to make the greek spelling of it look like a cute cat's face, on account of how much they liked cats.
