    What an interesting fella Seb is. Loved his attitude towards the mainstream and his desire to do his things his own way. I don't know how you guys are doing it but you're knocking it out the park every episode.
    Stevie, you're forgiven brother, we all make mistakes. I mean I've bought Bowmore 12 twice.

    Sounds like a cool bar to check out if in Brighton. Completely agree about Bowmore, I got gifted a bottle of Bowmore No.1 early on, still barely a dent in it, goes into a few cocktails that call for peated whisky occasionally and otherwise sits on the shelf. Haven't bought another bottle of Bowmore. Contrast with GlenAllachie, great entry level stuff. Tried it, loved it, and have bought many, many bottles including single casks and limited releases, which all started because the core range was so good.

    Of course I am going to love this episode, the artwork on the Aberfeldy got me into whisky. Our favourite place in Brighton by a long way, although worried after this we will struggle to get our usual seats after this. But seriously if you guys can try the Vino De Color Williamson it is mind boggling good. Might be able to sneak a small dram to the Whisky Event to share

    I tasted some Cu Bocan the other day and was very intrigued, but didn't end up getting an official bottle. Then this cask strength Tomatin 7 year old popped up and I am pleased to say I am one of 262 owners, and it is right up my street. I have seen CYWL around before listed as a stockist, so it was great to see them pop up on your channel.
    Incidentally, I believe Jake likes a wine cask maturation, so is he going to have a beard-off with Seb?

    • @TheWhiskyBaron
      @TheWhiskyBaron 2 месяца назад

      great to hear you have the Tomatin - enjoy! and I did think about having a beard-off on the wine front as you say, but wanted to focus more on the whiskies at hand. one for another time maybe!

    I get the stance that age isn’t everything in whisky, but I mean the industry bases a lot of its marketing - not to mention justification of its prices - on those numbers. It seems a bit disjointed to me that consumers are expected to pay more for younger bottlings as well as keep shelling out small fortunes for older expressions. If we are only paying for quality then we should be seeing some older expressions selling for lower prices, but pretty much every single older expression (18yr+) has gotten significantly more expensive, be they IB, OB, blends, etc. I actually think, with the way things are being priced and sold, that the industry as a whole may already be alienating significant portions of its future consumers.
    The older age statements, at least for me, were something to kind of aim for once I started enjoying and trying different whisky’s - if they were priced as prohibitively as they are now I probably wouldn’t of put as much time (and money!) into whisky because I’d of felt like the self-styled best of the best stuff was never really obtainable. I can handle cheaper lower age statements and expensive high age statements; I can handle more expensive starting points regarding age, as long as across the board older age statements are more ‘reasonably’ priced; but high starting points, and then even higher prices as the age climbs? I don’t know man, when you try a good young expression and a poor old age statement it is logical - but that logic just isn’t applied to the pricing or the marketing, which is why I think young age statements are such a hard sell once you start putting higher prices on them. I mean I bought a Glenallachie 10CS for like 55quid, there’s no world in which I’m paying more for a 7yr Tomatin.
    Really good episode, and lots of talking points. Slainte

    • @TheWhiskyBaron
      @TheWhiskyBaron 2 месяца назад

      I definitely appreciate your stance and hear where you're coming from. from an OB POV I completely agree, but as an IB I think certain younger whiskies are hard to source and so bottling a unique expression like the Tomatin sometimes costs more than one may expect. definitely a topic for further conversation though!

    • @hoodwiser7652
      @hoodwiser7652 Месяц назад +1

      @@TheWhiskyBaron yeah to be fair after watching the whisky Baron channel it did open my eyes to how slim margins can be for small IB’s, and the challenges of sourcing casks for reasonable prices. Feels like the little guys (consumers and small IB’s) are the ones paying the price. Be interesting to see if the appetite of consumers remains.

    • @TheWhiskyBaron
      @TheWhiskyBaron Месяц назад

      @@hoodwiser7652 I think that certain IBs have a loyal following and these are the ones that will survive and hopefully thrive. a lot of the investment companies are setting up IBs now to show that they bottle though and these brands will almost definitely fall by the wayside
