Tracy I can't count the number of times I have lessoned to your tutorials. They are encouraging and very honest. Great encouragement for a beginner quilter!!!😊
what a great idea!! ty ty ty my biggest problem learning this is the foot speed, trying to keep that steady. Boy that one is a real pain. I dont have speed control on this machine and i hope when i get a new one that feature is going to be a Must!
Doodling with a pencil on paper is actually the opposite of what you do at the machine. I tried to figure out how to rig up a pencil so I could move paper under it, but my imagination and skill failed me. Thank you for solving this problem for me! It's so simple, but ingenious! I am deeply grateful and am looking forward to finally conquering some simple free-motion.
I practice with my machine unthreaded. Then I might thread machine and practice stitching. When I cover material all over and want to practice more I thread again with another color. Do this as many times as you wish. The different color stitches lets me see how well I am doing. When you have covered practice piece and need a new one use it to make a potholder interlining.
Oh my Goodness! I have watched so many different tutorials on Free Motion Quilting & I still wasn't sure what to do or how to... and really was afraid to try it. But then I seen your tutorial!! This is Fantastic & you make it so Simple to understand!! I thank you so very much for making this 🙂🙃🤗
Ahhhh Tracy- Another Genius Hack! I Love 💕 This! What a game changer, no more wasting materials and I can practice over and over again! I’m definitely implementing this in my arsenal tips and tricks that are mostly from You Dear! Thank You for Sharing Your Ideas 💡 with Us! 😊❤😊🥰👍🥰
This is a great hack! I am getting ready to do my first freemotion attempt, now I have a way to practice before I actually put my beloved quilt on the machine so maybe I won’t ruin it! Thank you so much!
*_Thanks grammy K! 💜I remember one day I was making a stack of quilt practice sandwiches....and then it hit me...I'll be throwing these in the garbage!_*
No don't throw away make pot holders out of them ,,, I put binding on mine and use them as pot holders. I know to use double ones to take something out of the oven , has they are not so thick. I have seen people using Moda fabric to practice on,, well I'm not that well off so I use my scraps or older fabric that I have picked up at a thrift. I just don't like to waste.
Great idea! I have everything ready to go,printed patterns to place under a vinyl shower curtain to practice on. And as someone else suggested, 1 inch lines drawn to practice cursive o's,e's and c's. However even the shortest marker will not fit on throat of my machine. I will mount on front in line with needle and see how it goes. Practice is practice, memory skills here I come!
My quilting friend led me to your You Tube video's and WOW I am so happy to have found you, thank you for sharing all of your wonderful sewing tips that help us to learn more about "sewing".
You sound just like me Angela✅😂 even the thought of making the quilt sandwiches to “waste” makes me not even want to attempt such a thing! No more waste for us! Yay!🥳
Thank you so much for this video. I have been wanting to start free motioning, so I can use that money on more fabric!! I appreciate these type of videos.
What a fabulous idea!! I have been so intimidated to try free motion quilting but after seeing this trick... I've got to try it!! Thanks for sharing Tracy!!
You are so brilliant thank you for such a great tip. I’ve been practising on a piece of plexiglass with an erasable marker, but using my machine that’s a brilliant brilliant idea. Thank you so so much.
Very, very cleaver, Tracy! You are truly an outside-the-box thinker. I've heard of making practice free motion quilt sandwiches out of sheets of paper towels, which can then be used for household cleaning and thrown away afterward (re-use, re-cycle). While I've not yet had the nerve to try free motion quilting yet, when I do I'm going to first try the paper towel method while looking at the quilt pattern I wish to try to replicate. If that doesn't work, I'll try chalk stamping the pattern on a paper towel quilt sandwich. The nice thing about free motion quilting on fabric with a busy design like a scrap quilt, is that any mistakes will probably be very difficult to see once the quilt is washed and dried. The maker of the quilt will probably be the only person who can find the mistake unless it's blatantly obvious. Hmmm.... maybe a scrappy quilt should be where I start free motion quilting on fabric. Thanks for another thought-provoking video, Tracy!!! You're the bomb! 😀 🙋🏻♀️
*_Dori- I've never heard of the paper towel hack...but that sounds like a good one too! A scrappy quilt is a great starting point!✅ I'm usually the only one who can see my mistakes LOL I think us quilters worry too much about being perfect.....it's art-💜Have a great day Dori💛_*
This is a great idea for practicing free motion quilting but I used clear magic cover shelving vinyl from the dollar tree. It's also great to use as transfer paper for your vinyl projects. Thanks for the tip.
Your tips for binding and stipling are magic.i ve done both before and all I got was massive frustration.i am now going to try these techniques.am self taught and soo far your channel has been awesome for a novice.thank you soo much.love it.Odette from Queensland Australia.soo many blessings and much gratitude.
This is one of the best learning tools for quilting I have seen ! I've also been down the quilt sandwich road over and over. I'm sewing a Christmas panel quilt and I have had the top done for 2 weeks now by I just can't seem to figure out the quilting. Some of it will be simple outlines with some echoing but there are areas I want to do a meandering loopy line with stars and I think this will be a great way to practice! Thank you so much for for sharing this wonderful technique.
That is going to get me to try and free motion at Last. I have always been scared of trying free motion, scared of messing up fabric that's not cheap to buy. Now, I will be so much more confident in trying it. Thank you!
I’m not sure how long you’ve had your channel, but I only discovered you a few months back. It seems that I have missed a lot of great videos that are just now showing up in my feed. This is an ingenious idea! I went right in to look at my long arm machine to see if I could try this on it; and I can! I don’t even have to take the foot off for the needle out; I just need to leave the machine turned off! And there is a place where I could put the Velcro on in the pen. BTW, children’s washable Crayola markers work just as good as dry erase markers, but they don’t have the terrible stink! And, if you accidentally get it on fabric it will wash right out! they come in skinny and fat sizes. I already have some clear vinyl that I bought from Joann’s to lay over quilt blocks to try out different quilting designs. I could just put a piece of that over any fabric or quilt design and practice on it. I’m new to longarming and I don’t feel well most of the time, so I haven’t had a lot practice. But it is a challenge to move a long arm around. Much more challenging than one would think; because the wheels are on tracks that go right to left and front to back. So that makes it a challenge to get a nice curve and it takes lots of practice. So I think this is a fabulous idea for practicing on. You could even tape the clear vinyl right over your quilt block and practice all different kinds of designs and see which one you like the best. You could also print out on a piece of paper a quilt design that you want to learn and then practice tracing over that with the clear vinyl in between. Thanks Tracy! I like the way your mind works. They always encourage tracing with a pencil ✏️; but no matter what kind of machine you use, it’s never going to be the same as holding a pencil in your hand, no matter how you hold the pencil or (pen)! 🌷
So happy to hear you were able to figure the technique out on your longarm!✅ So true what you said about tracing out with a pencil in your hand....I would never be able to learn that way....Have a great day Susan! (about the crayola markers...I'm actually experimenting with them now)✅
Wish I had seen this doing my early years in my free motion quilting. Wiping off dry erase is MUCH easier than a seam ripper picking out all my stitches.
Finally this is something I can use. I’m not cheap but I hate wastage of something that is useful. I feel like if I don’t do the FMQ perfect then I should not do it at all. Maybe I can at least close enough for comfort. .
*_Janice, I'm the same way about wasting all that batting and fabric...Now we can save those good quilt practice sandwiches for right before we do the final quilting on the quilts✅_*
I'd definitely be holding the fabric closer to the needle as I FMQ - at the end. It feels like to me, the foot is too close to the fabric - as it is pushing it. I find the hack an interesting idea though I just "do it" and don't really practice all that much. I figure that I can practice all day and never feel like I'm 'there', so I just do it.
*_You are so welcome!💜 It's really easy to attach on too...and the good part is...if and when you want the velcro piece off....it comes off damage free✅_*
How do you raise the height of you sewing foot? I have never heard of this. My sewing machines are oldies but goodies so maybe that is why. I love your down to earth lessons. I have learned so much even though I have been sewing for over 70 years. Thank you so much this is something I want to get better at. My first free motion quilt was for my first grandson when he was born 39 years ago!
*_That's a great question Gloria! Well most older machine probably don't have the option of height adjustment. On my machine-there is an option on the key pad for free motion quilting foot height adjustment....so I just click whichever way...the key is to get it to hover just above fabric✅(Thank you so much for the kind encouragement in your post💛)_*
ZOWIE!!! Going to start practicing as soon as I get my supplies tomorrow. I've been wanting to learn free motion quilting for years. This has motivated me to give it a shot (tomorrow!). ☺ BTW do you ever FMQ with the sewing machine embroidery patterns built into our sewing machines? I want to machine embroidery wildlife on my son's quilt and then FMQ around them. I'm going downstairs to try this now. Suggestions? Thanks for sharing your GREAT approach to free motion quilting!!! ☺☺☺
Hi Linda💛 so happy you are going to start practicing FMQ✅ My machine does not do embroidery designs. So I couldn’t comment on that. My machine does basic designs. I do know that you can free motion quilt around anything though✅
*_I'm not sure what kind of screwdriver it is...LOL 😂 I found it about a year ago in my hubby's tool chest. Here's the link to the screwdriver Terri✅ _**_amzn.to/3Db9jFh_*
If you have a difficulty getting all of the dryer race marker off of your vinyl square, try using a little bit of alcohol on a paper towel or something I mean it takes permanent marker off of dry erase boards

I have not started free motion quilting because I was moving to stiffly! This is an amazing way to learn!!!
*_Thank you for the kind feedback Katherine....it really is easy and it really does work✅Keep me posted on how it works out for you💛_*

Fantastic idea. Can't wait to try. Saving thread and wear and tear on machine!!!!!
That is such a neat idea! I will have to try this, since I have been wanting to start to learn how to free motion quilt.
Very clever! I love the idea, much better than just wasting fabric and batting!
*_Yes- YouX- I hate wasting fabric!✅_*
Ahhhh Tracy- Another Genius Hack! I Love 💕 This! What a game changer, no more wasting materials and I can practice over and over again! I’m definitely implementing this in my arsenal tips and tricks that are mostly from You Dear! Thank You for Sharing Your Ideas 💡 with Us! 😊❤😊🥰👍🥰
Oh yes this is a great practice hack Marie....I used it a ton in the beginning✅
You’re really VERY Clever, I may not be a quilter yet, but I certainly know a brilliant idea when I see it :)

This is a great hack! I am getting ready to do my first freemotion attempt, now I have a way to practice before I actually put my beloved quilt on the machine so maybe I won’t ruin it! Thank you so much!
You can do it Janet!!!🎉
Great hack. Will definitely give its a try. Thank you
Tracy you make this look so easy thanks for your havk
You are so welcome!❤️
What a great idea!!! I too did not enjoy throwing away fabric that I practiced on. I will be practicing more from now on.
Linette..with all machines being different you will have to try it in dif positions...in front sounds like a good idea✅ YOU can do it!!!🎉
You have to remember you’re not sewing anything . Just make
Small blocks and do quilt as you go , better practice

*_You are absolutely right Kathleen✅_*
Great information. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for showing us how to make that practice square for learning quilting designs.

Thank you for watching Arlene💛
If you have a difficulty getting all of the dryer race marker off of your vinyl square, try using a little bit of alcohol on a paper towel or something I mean it takes permanent marker off of dry erase boards
