Bought my 4Runner new in 2002. 320,000 miles later, still going strong. Worth every penny!
My 2016 4runner is all original, even the battery! Unbelievable!! 🇨🇦
I bought a brand new 2002 forerunner and the transmission went within a year
Your American dollars in Japan are greatly appreciated.

how much was it?
My 2007 FJ Cruiser is at 430k miles and no problems ever! Only simple maintenance. Love that truck. I’m taking her to a million miles 🤞
I had a 2002 Taurus SES 24 valve and dtove it as main car for 15 years. One recall. And only replaced starter after 13 years and coil pack after 14 years. Of course tires and brakes. When I sold it, it was still good for more years. And this was a Michigan car that went thru 15 winters. Only a little rust on rust on rear wheel lip.
I want Scotty to make a car so I can buy it.
Camry Kilmer package
I would buy that car without questions or doubt of shady purchase.. Good thing he tells us what to watch for!
Scotty would recommend nobody buy the first model year though, even of his own car 😂
Kilmer Wisdom V6
@@chasefeller1279haha, true😂
Had an 06 with the V8 and loved it. Bought it used with over 100k miles on it, drove it as my daily for 2 years while putting another 30k miles on it. Only paid for oil changes and brakes. After those 2 years I sold it for 2k more than I paid for it! Basically this thing paid me 2k for 2 years of ownership and 30k miles of travel. I should have kept her, the one that got away.
my parents have one from 1998 with 310,000 miles, still runs like brand new. ice cold air conditioning and a solid vehicle!
Bought a 2010 4Runner in 2014… 3rd hand. Had 70,000 miles and paid $22,000. It now has 311,000 and is a Jim-dandy! No problems whatsoever. 👍🏻😁
I have a 2000 4Runner. 330,000 miles on it and it still rocks. General maintenance only and it just goes.
I advised my mother in law to buy a Toyota many years ago because I didn't want to work on her car. Perfect example of problem avoidance.
Lol, same. As long as they can get over how the car looks, you can convince them.
Hi Scotty. I love your videos. I have a 2002 Buick Park Avenue with the 3.8 liter engine. It has over 213,000 miles on it and it runs great. Just normal wear and tear. Over 30 mpg on the road. If I ever have to buy another car I will definitely look at a Toyota.
That 3800 engine was a beast, never understood why GM stopped making it.
2007 ! I never really understood just how good Toyotas are until I found Scotty on YT just a few years ago (lockdowns era redpill). I should have realized when my bought new 2003 Echo never even needed brakes after 100k+ miles but I gave it away to family member as the rust was infested bad in the hood latch area in Hawaii. I always was amazed how trouble-free it was though. --- Here it is 2023 and not being able to afford a new car over the last 20 yrs, I have a pristine '94 Corolla touring wagon that was used maybe 3 times a year, that I snapped up a couple yrs ago. Same trouble free, and no rust. Funny though that its rust free even its older than the '03.
I bought a 98 civic lx with 100k for 4k two years ago, since then I’ve done radiator, brakes, tires, and recently it started hesitating because the exhaust manifold is cracked it’s a common problem, no rust tho
Bought a '99 4Runner new after comparing to Mercedes. Really glad I did. 350K+ miles so far. The perfect daily driver for local trips. Guessing new Toyota's don't stand a chance of lasting that long.
Got to be careful with after market items as I learned recently, just changed my master clutch cylinder about 3 months ago… and now I need a new one
Bought my '98 4Runner new. 58k miles, garage-parked, dealer serviced, west coast. It'll outlast me at this rate. It has a few little dings in the metal bumper that bother me. Exchanged knowing looks with an old guy like me driving an absolutely perfect copy (his is white, mine is black). Now I'm gonna have to fix the dings.
Presently own four cars, and my most reliable is an 04 4 runner. It’s the oldest of the bunch.
Will keep it, till the wheels fall off. PS: Toyota stopped replacing those frames in 2017

I went to GM's Spring Hill, TN plant yesterday to make a video. Scotty would've loved to see all of the Cadillac Lyric EVs parked there. I think he'd have had a field day explaining why there are so many.
My grandfather have Toyota Hilux 2001 model in good running condition 863k mileage.
Panther Platform from Ford.. I want both my grand marquis back. first one was a 96 LS I bought in 97.. The second was a 2003 I bought in 2016 ..yes 13 years old with 27,000 miles on it.. all original..even the rock hard tires..... sold them both with inlays of listing them.. still got call on the 03 weeks afterwards...
Scott, please tell me if this problem is too expensive to fix, thank you very much.
"This is a 2012 Nissan Rogue All-Wheel drive with only 29k .
Engine and transmission are great.
Suspension brakes are nice and firm.

Bought my 1995 Saturn new. 375,000 miles. I didn't drive it today; it's in the driveway back at the house.
We loved our 4 Runner 1988. We regret selling it. We still have our 90 Toyota 4x4 truck still like new.
My 1998 454 2500 suburban and 2002 496 dually half over 250,000 and still shift fine, and spend most of the time towing. Frames are clean, but rockers are going on both. You can buy American name plates, service them and they last.
I own a 2005 Tundra. Incredible vehicle. IMHO the Mazda B series trucks that were real Mazda trucks are the longest lasting vehicles. I have an 88' and a 91. Both lived outside since new and still run great.
I have a 2006 4Runner SR5. I bought 12 years ago when my kids were little. So many great off roading and camping memories have been made. I have had to make some minor repairs but nothing major. 193,000 and still runs great. I don’t think I can ever get rid of it.

Got a mercury grand marquis.just drove halfway across the country and back 24 MPG.200000 miles on it no oil bunt. Flawless.that’s why they don’t make them anymore
Smart owner to keep it. Listen to Scotty and change the oil/filter every 5K miles (or 8,000 Km in Cda, Aus, Eur etc.)
or six-months, whichever occurs first!
I cut my oil service recommendation in half & take off 10% off the time frame for all others. eg, spark-plugs, coolant, diff-oils,
Scotty, love your channel, as for the headlights, Walmart will clean those up to like new for 25 dollars. Takes about an hour. I make more than that an hour so to me it's worth it. Simple, easy. Just saying 😌
I had this generation 4Runner. I didn’t like it for 2 reasons. Bad blind spot and had transmission issues at 70000 miles. Traded it in at 70000 miles for an Acura MDX.
Thank you for the video. Blessings to you.
I hope I have grandkids one day just so I can show them Scotty's videos 💪🏾
Mr. Scotty simply falls me in love with Toyota 4Runner. 🇦🇫
Love my 2007 Tacoma TRD! Keeping it forever!
07 sequoia. 188k miles. Frames rusted completely out. Still runs fine
I was thinking Scotty was gonna say the FORD Model T.
Whenever I think that BMW X4 M40 is sexy or the Audi Q7 55 TFSI is something I want, I come back to Scotty to remind myself that those are endless money pits. My 10 y/o Korean is still running and had no repairs besides the wearing parts.
Edit:
Then I turn to Dave Ramsey for puttng my money to work.
My 06 Tacoma had that 4.0 liter V-6. Sold it to my nephew at 336,000 miles. He has it up a little over 350K now. Problem free.
Yep!…Toyota Replaced the Whole Frame on a 2004 Toyota Tacoma I had and I wasn’t even the original owner!👌😉👍
Really, the whole frame? As in taking the body etcetera off? I would think that I would rather have them replace the whole vehicle
@@andrewphillips8790
YES, the box, cab, frame & running gear, and engine were all separated out in the shop and took 4 weeks once they got in the new frame…and yes, I took photos….The cool thing for me was I got a good deal on used one owner (with paperwork) SR5 TRD 4x4 with a rusty frame that had ONE nickel size hole in the sub frame and I read an article online that said Toyota would warranty out rusty frames for 10 years…So I called the 1-800 number for them and they directed me to my local dealer (in Seattle) for an inspection and offered to warranty the frame so I jumped at the opportunity!👌
2000 GMT 800 ( silverado, sierra, tahoe, etc) Best vehicles ever made. parts are literally EVERYWHERE and cost pennys compared to yoda parts. not to mention you can fix the gm trucks with a hammer and duct tape. But with the cost of duct tape its cheaper to just fix it right. just my op. Thanks Sir Kilmer.
Some folks don't like constantly having to change out parts wether they are plentiful or not.
Some of us have better things to do than work on vehicles.
@@paulcoenen7918 Thats crazy, i can sometimes go weeks at a time between repairs. LOL didnt say it was easy.
@Artoconnell
At least you are honest when defending your Chevy Trucks.
I get it tho, they are big rigs that a lot of folks need and can keep them in the road because they are good at fixing them. Makes perfect sense for some folks.
@@paulcoenen7918 And an absolute disaster for Normal people :) I concede the point
Car polished the light covers takes the yellowing out just polished them when doing your paint and they look new
My mom has had her Lexus ES350 since the early 2000's, with no issues. I've had my 2003 GTI VR6 for 21 years (bought new October 2002), with no issues as well. Both cars have had minor stuff done, such as a cooling fan that crapped out, or an MAF oxygen sensor that failed. All inexpensive repairs under $500 dollars. The 24v VR6 is a bulletproof engine, and much better than the older 12v VR6, which had inferior timing chain guides. This engine was easily VW's best ever!
Don't ever buy a newer vw. You will be sorely regretful.
I have been trying to buy a Toyota 4Runner from the mid 1990's but they are 15 thousand and upwards of 25 thousand. People are crazy if they think im going to pay those insane prices for a mid 90's 4Runner
It's a classic cause I want one too 😂
They have insane resale value. They're reliable and can run forever (if you take good care of them) and they hold their value up over time. That's why even used ones are so expensive. I know people who bought a mid 90's 4Runner years ago and they're sill running like clocks. Prices may seem crazy now, but years down the road it'll save you a boatload of money.
@@AndrewFaust-x1e That's interesting. Now I see. I also like the Lexus suv from mid 90's I think it's the LX 450...Those are going for upwards of 30 grand yo! A mid 90's Lexus LX 450 with nearly 300 thousand miles on it!
@@IsmailAbdulMusic Yup, and there was even a Toyota Tundra that went 1 million miles in 2016. That's a testament to Japan's quality control. They really build killer cars over there, lol!
Personally i would stay away from the 2nd generation with the 3.slow engine, its a gas hog at 17 mpg tops , head gaskets issues (but worth fixing) . Still very good vehicles if thats what you want, i just like the 3 generation with the 3.4 . I get way more power and 23 mpg highway with the non-ethenal gas 19mpg with ethenal.
Keep looking and have the cash ready ,when you see a decent one pop up go immediately . Took me two years to find my 2002. Had about 10 of them disappear before i got there.😅
Good luck 😊👍
I've the year, color and options as this 4runner. And at 135K miles, it only has 3 things wrong with it, the tire pressure monitor system has dead batteries(who cares? Not me), the fluid washer motor of the windshield wiper no longer pumps cleaner, and the rear hatch window dew wipe cracked(I just duct tape it to seal it, never used it anyway)

I’ve heard after 2009 the quality of these went downhill like everything else. I guess 1987-2009 sweet spot. It’s hard finding one that isn’t rotted out ware I live in rust belt.
My 2005-06 Tundra CC LTD I bought off the delivery truck still runs great(using tons of gas of course) and except for dings, sunroof leak(CURSES!!) & never has stranded me.
After my demise some lucky survivor could possibly keep her for another 15-20 years!
And changing the TB Kit will also be their duty.
Love my old beater.
almost every totota i see that is a few years old has yellow headlights already
I bought a 1998 4Runner in 2003 for $16.5k with 45k miles. I drove it 130k miles and traded it in 2012 for a new Highlander. Always wished I kept it.
To anyone currently searching for that perfect (or decent) 4runner, hang in there. Took me nearly a year, I thought about giving up, but I finally scored a nice one for a "fair" price. It required a long out of state drive and I got really lucky. I'm so glad I didn't give up, you shouldn't either!
Isn’t MSRP fair price for a new 4Runner, considering their famed longevity?
It usually takes a descent amount of effort to get a good reward 👍
Wow
I looked for months in 2000 finally just ordered the one I wanted. It was a better deal $35-40 k used 100 000 - 140 000 km i paid 45 out the door new exactly how I wanted it and colour. I thought it was going to be outrageous to order it . I was very surprised. Toyota salesman was great
Was that a 7002 year model?? I can not remember
My mom has a 2017 gmc terrain and at almost 90k the Timing chain broke and destroyed the engine in me we had warranty so we get a new engine but that’s stupid
Maybe not lasting so long of you got the 1GR-FE engine prior to late 2006 when the quietly fixed the head gasket weakness, and quietly gave the head gasket a new part number.
2010 I bought a 2000 corolla with 34000 miles drove it 10 years I literally just changed the oil, tires and struts . This car got 43 miles a gallon and I am sorry I soid it. Hands down the best car I have ever had.
We have a 2004 4 runner with the V8. 236,000 miles so far. We had a 86 4-runner 4 cylinder and put 280,000 on it. We hope to break 300,000 with the 2004. It's been garaged at night in the dallas area so doesnt have the rust issue. It's going to be tough to get rid of this one.
Hope my new 24 camry le will be as good.
hey Scotty ! how does a Rav4 compare to a 4Runner ? of approximately the same age ? is the Rav4 as good ?
Kilmers heart must race faster than he talks lmao you go bro!! 🎉
I discovered this years ago with albuterol. Get paper prescriptions and shop no insurance prices first.
According to Toyota it depends on if the state uses salt or the liquid de-icer…if the state uses salt in winter then they’ll replace the frame if it’s liquid de-icer then no. New frame
the hillbilly land part killed me haha
Question. My 99 Buick Park Avenue has a slow battery, can't find it. Any ideas?

This was the year range of Runners that had bad head gaskets. Toyota replaced them in a recall, and in 2008 those Runners came with the good head gaskets.

what is better or longer lasting the 4runner or the Landcruiser they are both amazing both are pricey but last a long time
Landcruiser is going to be much more costly to maintain, but is larger and more powerful for towing. Depends on what you are using it for.

I have an off topic question, here in Chicago, there's Chevrolet Trax all over, has Scotty had the opportunity to drive/evaluate one yet, I know GM would probably trying to avoid that as long as possible, and I imagine, MAYBE, it might be too early in the model run to determine how reliable they are or not, just curious

I sold a friend of mine my Mercury Grand Marquis five years ago when it was 20 years old and now it is 25 years old and has a lot more than 200K miles and it is still running. I let her have it for a lot less than you paid for yours because she needed help and I bought a new American pickup truck and now my transmission has gone out at about 90,000 miles. Hillbilly Land. Been there, done that.😂
Hello Scotty,
I have a question. A few days ago, when I stopped my car on the home front door, I depressed the brake pedal to a full stop. Then, I engaged the parking brake. The car was totally at full stop at that time, but I accidentally released my foot off the brake pedal. Then I accidentally put the shift lever from D to P without my foot on the brake pedal. While the car wasn’t rolling, and I didn’t feel anything weird, do you think this may affect negatively the transmission? Can it break the transmission?
Should be fine 😎
You did a lot accidently & no it will not harm the transmission just do not do it accidently too often.
I would think that as long as it wasn't moving while it happened, you should be okay, but I wouldn't make a habit of it!
My 2008 Highlander does the same thing, I can remove the key 🔑 all the while the vehicle is still running. 😅
Nothing Wrong with the Honda V6 timing belt, Toyota is having Problems other than what's standard here. 😁
why does honda use timing chains for some cars and not the others?
@@tracy2762Not just Honda, Toyota has as well…
Bought my 1st 4runner in August this year. 2022, 32K miles for 33K dollars. I'm extremely pleased with the vehicle and the price. I wanted something that'll last for YEARS, simply because I detest having to car shop.
These older 4Runner's are currently going strong.
Fun fact: Scotty and Toyota both have 2 T’s in their names. You’re welcome 😂
