If you enjoy spincasters, check out the more expensive Zebco. I had picked it up for my dad but after taking it apart and seeing how it's designed I was super impressed lol.
My girlfriend got me my first baitcaster about 3 months ago. Had had time with it the first time out with backlash . But really got better with it now and really love it. I still thank her for it. Thanks for all the great videos.
this is gonna help alot just got a a new baitcaster as a birthday gift and been having trouble dailing it in i have two older ones and not the best with a baitcaster
Setting zero instant death. You caught a shad. Thank you for the information Alex. I remember you would put shad on your lippless crankbaits and caught fish. Why not try it again?
Like he said, would recommend getting something thats inexpensive, and a decent weight on the end and go to a local park where you can practice. String it with some mono and tinker around. Worst case is you birdnest it so bad you have to cut it off. Its just mono, just make sure you clean up your mess.
Yep, just start off using heavier lures that cast good and work your way down. Even after getting the hang most still use spinning for super light stuff.
I got my first one this year after 40+ years.... it took me a week or so to really get the hang of it. I can honestly say that it just has so much more power than a spinning reel it is not even comparable.
Thanks for not overlooking the basics with baitcasters. I've used baitcasters for decades and when I started it had me forming many new cus words. Helping folks that are new to this, even though you rarely have problems is just one point that sets you and realistic fishing apart from the other shows. Not all shows but I think there's many in it for the wrong reasons. Bravo!!
Thanks Alex! After watching you catch fish left and right on baitcasters, I just bought two new baitcast reels (1 Abu Garcia, 1 Kast King) and rods...I have never used bait casting before! Looking forward to learning...Thanks again!
@@RealisticFishing mine is a Lew's, has the brake on the outside but I just threw a few tests and for more distance bringing that down to 3. Too windy to try and lower today. Thanks
Thanks for the lesson. I too have never mastered the bait caster reel but i just may have to buy one and give it a try I have always used spinning reels. Hope you went today the weather was great in my opinion I had to work. Hope you are having a good week!!!
When I was 11 yrs old I went out on a boat with my best friend and his older stepbrother fishing. He stepbrother handed me a bait caster, 1st time I had even seen one... let's just say I had a learning curve. Good vid that is informative to some one looking to use one.
Love this. Too often people are talking their heads off explaining the brake settings. It was nice to just see them in action. The LOL at setting 0 I had was a nice surprise.
Very good demonstration of how the settings work. I have always been a little "gun-shy" on trying a bait caster and have just used a spinning reel. After your video, I think I might give one a try. This may lead to even more fun fishing!!! Thanks for your quality and Realistic videos!!!
I'm getting a new bait caster soon (first 1 broke on the 2nd day) and I love them. I never used them before that, its amazing how smooth it casts and how much farther it casts than a spincast rod
Great video for beginners wanting to use a baitcaster!! This was extremely helpful and educational! This definitely will help me and many others figure out what setting works best. Thank you for sharing this with us all Alex and thank you for always keeping it realistic 🎣
Great video. I used to keep messing with both the tension and brakes at the same time and just confused myself. Fool with one at a time is the way to go. BTW if you are going to eat your fish or just dispatch bluegill for bait, checkout the “ikejime” method of humanely killing and bleeding them. It’s the Japanese gourmet fish prep method that prevents ‘fishy” tasting fish.
Nice video man. Amazing the difference in settings. I bought a abu garcia black max this year for my first baitcaster. I got the hang of it fairly quick. I usually keep it in the middle setting area. I only use it for my heavier lures though. I can usually get away with not thumbing the spool until eight before it hits the water. But heavier lures are alot easier to throw on baitcasters
@@RealisticFishing Has a dial, but I never tried to see how they might change how it casts. I set it and have not looked at it since. Interested to see how it changes the cast.
so for my own understanding.. the lower the brake setting the farther it will go? but then you risk more backlash as it lowers? i haven't dabbled with the brakes yet because I'm unsure of making heavy mistakes.
Never used a baitcaster, but I've thought about it. I think personally I would be willing to trade 40ft casting difference as a beginner using setting 6 just to build the confidence. You make it look so Realistic! Frrrrr-um-mm-mum, love the sound of that reel.
Spinning reels are my usual, and fly rods, too. Baitcasters just intimidate the Hell out of me. I have one, but I've never used it. Baitcaster videos are appreciated!
its awesome that you showed all the different settings. i forget what the brakes are called on my one baitcaster but i keep 2 on 2 off normally and that seems to do just fine, then i just adjust the spool tension for different lures
@@RealisticFishing the black max was my learning baitcaster and i can say its the perfect balance of cheap and effective. One of the best bang for your buck reels. Feels good to see you recommend it, too.
Great video. My only baitcaster now is magnetic but same principle I s'pose. The thumbing is something I have to work on more. But it's only been one season of baitcaster so I'm not expecting much.
Now I need to mess with the brakes on my reels more. They are magnetic so I’m not sure how much different it will be than the centrifugal brakes. There’s your next video! Maybe try out the Abu Garcia Revo X, which is what I have on two different rods.
Realistic Fishing I feel like even running my brakes on max, which I do most of the time, I would never be able to cast without using my thumb. At least not with the reels I own.
😁👍 Nice test! I tried my cousins friends baitcaster it was a hi end shimano It was ok but I never got into them I like the spinning reels especially today's models work so much better than ones from the past. With swapping baits so much I think a spinning reel for me works best.
Thank You very much ! I've been thinking about getting one of these but seeing all the issues the RUclips guys are having with them was making me wonder if it's a bad design or what the heck is going on. So thanks !
I'm envious of your overhand casting ability, I am ok right to left but find I backlash more from left to right and no way overhand...total backlash...I practice but try to limit having to respool lol. Funny thing is I bat left handed naturally but cast right handed lol who knows maybe it's just me.
I wonder if it’s the same on the black max. That’s what I got after watching your video on it. I never tried to play with each setting though. Thanks for the great content!
First time I used a baitcaster I didn’t know what the settings did nor know to I have to hold my thumb on the spool. First cast, you should’ve seen the backlash!
Impressive distance! i have a couple of baitcasters but i almost never use them. i always gravitate to my light tackle spinning rod. im not that great a caster so thats probably why lol.
These tutorials are much appreciated! I've never actually used a baitcaster, only spinning reels and of course a childhood full of cheap spincasters.
Its like riding a bike. Once you get the hang of it, you can cast any baitcaster.

It was the last one this time
For me almost never.
@The Hobbling Farmer Yours too! 🤣
I am so glad that you made this video. Mainly because I am thinking about a baitcaster.
Consider centrifugal brakes when buying it 😀

Start cheap 😉
This is actually my first year using a baitcaster and I am still learning. Thank you for this demo great video as always realistic!
My bait caster has centrifugal brakes and this is the best video that describes how they work and how to set them. Thank you
Casting on a free spool.... I too like to live dangerously. 🤣🤣😂
After having an entire reel fluff up on me, I no longer wish to live dangerous.

I feel more comfortable now when shopping for a baitcaster. Thank you!
I'm new to baitcasters and I got a Shakespeare alpha which is the cheapest I could find. it seems to be ok but it does backlash often
That reel uses a different system.
Yea it's got the brakes on the outside. I've slowly gotten use to it but have to keep it on 7 or up or I'll backlash it every time lol
