One of the things that was left out of the movie but was in The Prisoner of Azkaban novel is that James Potter (Harry's father), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were the original inventors of The Marauders Map. That is the reason why Professor Lupin knew how to use it. When the original Marauders were students in Hogwarts they were all best friends. When James, Sirius and Peter found out that Remus is a werewolf they decided to become Animagus (wizards that can willfully magically turn into an animal just like Professor McGonagall can turn into a cat) because werewolves don't attack other animals and Remus' friends didn't want him to be alone during the full moon period. This is why the map reveals the weird names when you use the "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" spell. They were the nicknames of the Marauders. Mooney is Remus Lupin because he is a werewolf. Padfoot is Sirius Black because his animagus form is a dog. Wormtail is Peter Pettigrew because his animagus form is a rat. And James Potter is Prongs because his animagus form is a stag.
Dumbledore knew about Remus' condition and how Remus became a werewolf when he was only a very small child. So he had the Womping Willow tree planted and had a tunnel put in so that Remus can hide in the Shrieking Shack during the full moon cycle.

@@firstenforemostTrue, but once one is a bit too old for the role making the rest the same makes it less noticeable in my opinion. If one looked much younger or older than the others and they were supposed to be around the same age that would just stand out even more, this way you don’t really think about it too much unless you’re looking at the timelines. Plus, as for Peter looking even older that felt ok to me, dude looked ROUGH. Between being a rat for 12 solid years and the stress of the last year I’m not surprised he’s aged badly. It reminds me of those old time photos from the old west and you read the caption like “this person was 35 when the photo was taken” and are like what the heck, I thought they were 50! Definitely my favorite of the movies, but they do leave out some VERY important things. First off, the Marauder's map was made by Harry's dad, James, with Sirius, Peter, and Lupin to help them with their nightly mischief. Lupin was Moony, Peter was Wormtail, Sirius was Padfoot, and James was Prongs. Those were nicknames they used for each other. The other is that all James was an animagus too. He, Sirius and Peter would transform to be by Lupin when he was a werewolf. Basically, they did so so that Lupin wouldn't need to be trapped in a room to hurt himself every full moon. Peter became a rat so he could easily reach small places unseen. Sirius became a large dog, and James became a large stage (male deer) so they could control Lupin and keep him from hurting anyone. That's why the shape of Harry's patronus was so significant.

This film marks a shift in the tone of the series from semi-child friendly to a darker, more action packed film series. To match (and because of the passing of Richard Harris in 2002), Dumbledore was recast, with Sir Michael Gambon (RIP) playing the character for the remainder of the series. People who prefer the books saw Richard Harris as the character jumping from the book to the screen, while I think Sir Michael Gambon did a great job for the darker tone of the later films.

The reason the Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher position keeps changing is because it was cursed by Tom Riddle. If I remember correctly, Riddle wanted the position for himself, but Albus Dumbledore refused to appoint him because of his attraction to the Dark Arts, so he put a curse on the position that nobody who held it would make it past the first year.

  • @Heida77
    @Heida77 4 месяца назад +1

This film is much different and darker because it has another director than the first two. It also leaves a lot more book stuff out. It doesn't explain the origin story of the Marauders Map and that it was created by a group of four friends at Hogwarts together under their nicknames: Moony was Remus Lupin (as the moon brings out the werewolf); Padfoot was Sirius Black (as he could turn himself into a dog who has soft fleshy pads on its feet); Prongs was James Potter, Harry's dad (as he could turn himself into a Stag with antlers and the tips of a stag's antlers are called prongs); and Wormtail was Peter Pettigrew (as he could turn himself into a rat and a rat's tail looks like a worm). That is how Lupin knew how to turn the map on and off. Dumbledore knew Lupin was a werewolf and planted the Whomping Willow to use as a secret passage to the Shrieking Shack as a place for him to transform during a full moon. His three friends figured it out and learned to transform themselves into animals so they could safely be with him when he transformed into a werewolf at the Shrieking Shack.
In Latin, Lupin means wolf and Sirius means the "Dog Star" (the brightest star in the night sky) because it is part of the constellation Canis Major or "the greater dog", a clever hint to who the characters are. Furthermore, Pettigrew comes from the French words "Petit" and "gros" which means "small" and "fat".
Harry Potter exists in a universe that applies the Single Timeline Theory of time travel. You experience a single time line that never changes. There is no timeline where Buckbeak and Harry die or Sirius does not escape. The Harry and Hermione that went back in time didn't change anything. They were always there, hence the rocks that were thrown at them BY HERMIONE and Hermione seeing herself. We, the viewer, just didn't see them. One has to decide to use a Time-Turner to change the future, not the past. You have to decide ahead of time what you want to change. At the time of Buckbeak's "execution", Dumbledore has already decided to send Harry and Hermione back in time. He already knows that Buckbeak escapes because of the time travel.
Since the existence of Time-Turners have created big plot holes, J.K. Rowling has also made the explanation that you can only go back five hours without seriously harming yourself. Now, why didn't they use the Time-Turner to prevent Voldemort killing Harry’s parents? Exactly for the reasons I have mentioned. In the book, Hermione gave the Time-Turner back at the end of the year as she no longer needed it.
Fans have also talked about a plot hole regarding Fred and George not noticing that some dude named Peter Pettigrew was with Ron all the time and even in his bed. J.K. Rowling said they simply did not care to look at where Ron was and who he was with. But there is a theory that the Marauders designed the map so that no one else besides them could see them on the map. However, in the film Harry was able to see Peter, so that doesn't make sense. In the book it is actually Lupin who sees Peter, not Harry. So that would be a film plot hole. Also, in the books, the names are not as obvious as they are in the films (each person is represented by a dot with their name above it in small letters). If the twins had seen Peter's name it probably would have looked like he was just another student.
If underage magic outside of Hogwarts is illegal, why did Harry not get in trouble for using the Lumos charm in the beginning of this film? First, it is not in the book - instead, Harry is doing his homework using a torch. Second, the main reason why underage magic is illegal is to prevent it from being exposed to Muggles. Lumos is such a mundane charm that it can be easily explained to any Muggle who spots it, so the Ministry probably doesn’t care. Harry DID cast Lumos in the book in another instance after leaving the Dursleys but didn't get in trouble because he was all alone in the dark and they knew Sirius Black was after him.
Here's how and why Sirius escaped. The minister had visited Azkaban and Sirius asked him for the newspaper. He saw a photo of the Weasleys in Egypt and immediately recognised Peter Pettigrew disguised as Scabbers. Since the Dementors did not know that Sirius was an Animagus and they cannot sense an animal's thoughts, he escaped by transforming into his dog form. Lupin thought Sirius was guilty and he wasn't helping him until he found out Peter was alive. It was actually Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, who helped Sirius get into Hogwarts, as he knew all along that Scabbers was really Peter and that Sirius was disguised as a dog. Crookshanks is half Kneazle, a magical cat-like breed of feline, known for their uncanny ability to detect untrustworthy intentions or suspicious activity. This is why 'Scabbers' went missing, as he was hiding from Sirius AND Crookshanks. Sirius IS the one who scratched the painting, as he was trying to get into the Gryffindor common room to get the rat/Peter. He is also the one Harry saw before the bus came (there is a theory that the dementors attacked Harry on the train because they could smell Sirius' scent since he got so close to Harry).
The dementors are a metaphor for depression and are based on J.K. Rowling's own experience. The presence of a dementor makes the surrounding atmosphere grow cold and dark. It drains its victims of happy thoughts, memories and emotions. Every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of them and it forces its victims to relive their worst memories. That is why you need to think of your happiest memory to create a Patronus Charm. As someone who has battled depression for years, I can honestly say it is the most accurate description of it. The dementors are invisible to muggles just like depression is invisible to us. The Patronus Charm makes it go away, even if it's just for a little while, and brings a bright positive energy like therapy (or whatever works for that person) does with depression. Chocolate is also used to help alleviate the effects of dementors. Real world scientists say that chocolate has chemicals inside it that stimulate the release of endorphins (natural hormones that can alleviate pain, lower stress and improve mood), often leading to the feeling of increased happiness.
The Patronus Charm is one of the most powerful defensive charms. It is a complicated and extremely difficult spell that channels the witch or wizard's positive emotions into a powerful protection. When cast properly, it evokes a partially-tangible positive energy force known as a Patronus or spirit guardian, which acts as a shield between the witch or wizard and the dementor. The Patronus has two forms, non-corporeal and corporeal. It can appear as 'a thin wisp of silver' that hovers 'like mist' or it takes the shape of the animal with whom the witch or wizard shares the deepest affinity (which is more advanced and difficult). It is down to their skill in which form it appears. Each Patronus is unique to the one who conjures it, and it’s even possible, in some cases, for it to change. Harry's Patronus is a stag (a male deer) like his dad's. So it was, in a way, his dad who saved him.
Easter Egg: When the twins open The Marauder's Map for the first time the name Newt Scamander can be seen. He is the main character in the Fantastic Beasts series (which I think you should consider watching after HP). One theory suggests that Newt may have been at Hogwarts to save Buckbeak from execution, given his love for magical creatures.
It's almost universally agreed upon that the films did Ron dirty. One of the most notable ways was how most of his best lines were given to Hermione. In the book, Ron protects Harry against Sirius. Also, when Snape calls Hermione an "insufferable know it all" Ron sticks up for her and is put in detention, but in the film he agrees with Snape.
Never noticed it before but when Aunt Marge is insulting Harry's parents, Petunia laughs when she is insulting James but stops when she starts insulting Lily. However much she may have resented her, Petunia loved her sister deep down.
Some people don't think it's a real spell but knowing what we know now, it would make sense as to why Ron couldn't make Scabbers yellow in the first film - because the spell only works on rats.
When Hermione tells Hagrid that Draco must be taken to the hospital after harassing Buckbeak (which I think was more out of concern for Hagrid rather than Draco) you can see her wearing the time turner around her neck.
When Harry and Hermione travel back in time using the Time-Turner you can hear the ticking of a clock the whole time.
And when Harry receives a feather with Firebolt in the end, it's one of Buckbeak's feathers (making it clear that the gift is from Sirius).
    Behind the scenes:
After Richard Harris' death, Dumbledore was recast and from films 3-8 was played by Sir Michael Gambon, who died last year (R.I.P). Fun fact: Sir Ian McKellen was considered for the role but he thought it was too similar to his role in LOTR. Also, David Thewlis (Lupin) was originally considered to play Professor Quirrell in Philosopher's Stone.
While filming the sleeping bag scene in the Great Hall after Sirius came to Hogwarts, Daniel Radcliffe had requested to have his sleeping bag next to a girl whom he liked at the time. Director Alfonso Cuarón, Michael Gambon and Alan Rickman played a practical joke on him by hiding a remote-control-operated Whoopee Cushion in his sleeping bag. Daniel tried really hard to stay in character.
Hermione's "Is that what my hair looks like from the back?" was ad-libbed by Emma Watson due to her concern over her hair. The director loved it so much he kept it in the film.

Lots of reactors ask why Lupin took so long to conjure his Patronus on the train. The reason was that he was sleeping off a recent werewolf transformation and it takes a lot out of someone who has to go through it. He only woke just as the Dementor was about to take Harry’s soul.

One thing you understand about Harry in the books is that he gets strong the more he FEELS. Harry's emotions fuel his magic, unlike other wizards who are taught to control their feelings, Harry doesn't, he essentially feels with his magic and vice versa. The Patronus charm is Fuelled BY EMOTION really, so it is powerful.

Harry started using his Patronus with a false memory of his parents. The reason his Patronus was so powerful at the end is because he imagined the life with Sirius that he was talking to Hermione with. A life with a father, happy and healthy, and freedom from the Dursleys, that's why Harry could summon his Stag.
Edit - Also the feeling of being given that hope and the Dementors trying to take it away would definitely help fuel his power.

In the scene where they are teaching students to deal with fear, Harry's fear was the dementor. The teacher came to protect Harry, and in that moment we saw HIS biggest fear which was the moon. Which we find out later why he's so afraid of a full moon. The teacher was not trying to hide Harry's fear, which is why you two were a bit confused by that scene, it was clearer in the book. But a good bit of foreshadowing in the movie that most people miss first time through.

In the Prisoner of Azkaban book, Professor McGonagall got permission from the Ministry of Magic to allow Hermione to borrow a Time Turner so that she may take as many classes as she like. But taking so many classes with the Time Turner began to take a large physical toll on Hermione. She was cramming almost 48 hours of living into a 24 hour day. She even started having a hard time staying awake during the day. By the very end of the book Hermione returned the Time Turner to Professor McGonagall not only because it was physically getting far too difficult to live that many extra hours in a single day but Hermione began to consider the Time Turner way too powerful of a temptation to use for other reasons. Like Hermione said to Harry, "Terrible things happens to wizards who meddle with time".

FYI: Back when Tom Riddle wasn't full-blown You-Know-Who he had applied for the position of Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher .... and was rejected by Dumbledore. As a result he jinxed that position so that nobody could hold it longer than a year. The spell is never explained and it is not known if this could be done to any other subject or class.
This information comes from the _Harry Potter : Hogwarts Mysteries_ game which was the first released by _Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment_ under their _Portkey Games_ label (same as _Hogwart's Legacy_ btw). It can therefore be considered *canon* .

Really, it was after this one, that every time Draco gets to be troublesome, they should remind him first, that he was the first to panic and run away in the forest in the second movie, and now, cowering from Hermione and getting punched by her. Then there was little Ginny stepping in between Draco and Harry with such an angry face in the bookstore.

I have to admit it took me a while to accept this entry. When I first saw it, I was put off by its darker tone and bleaker and colder color scheme with all the grays, blues and whites, as well as the change in Hogwarts' design. It had a VERY different feel to it from the first two films that I didn't like at first. Now I accept it as one of the better entries in the series, though I definitely would have changed a few things. Like the twists during the climax should have lasted longer like in the book. Also, Maggie Smith had WAY too little screentime as McGonagall in this entry.
