The Hatbox Ghost is considered to be the ghost that has been most talked about. He was in the attraction once, but he got taken out even before the ride first opened because his effect simply couldn't work. Though there are rumors that he's coming back later this year during the 40th anniversery of this ride. *whew!*
My sister and I met a couple of guys working at the Chicken of the Sea Restaurant which was located in Fantasyland we were 16 and 17. These guys took us on this ride before the general public was able to ride it, when it was only opened to employees, it was so far beyond anything offered anywhere, it was amazing then, and still is :o)
At 7:03, you can see a rare image of the "hat box ghost". This was a character that was removed from the ride BEFORE the attraction opened. It was originally in the attic scene and the gag was that his head would disappear from his shoulders and reappear in a hat box he held in his hand. The effect never worked properly so they decided to remove it.
Tony and Bruce were right about how we waited for this to open. I hoped to take my girlfriend there on my all night party but we finally made it on hers just after it opened. It was great being able to work on the 3rd edition at Tokyo Disneyland and hunting down all the ghostly Victorian Antiques in Japan's Movie Prop houses and dealers. They only wanted to rent the pieces to us, so i would tell them i had no idea how long the ghosts would want to hold on to them.
Man, I remember this. It was on the HM DVD, and it was only available through the computer. I had the hardest time setting it up! I don't think it existed before the movie, though, and I'd watch it over the movie any day!
Wow, Walt was so clever, he really did love authenticity, and that led to big bucks, although, i'm pretty sure that wasn't his intenstions. I'm sure he just wanted the guest to enjoy the ride as much as possible.
@33Keith33: No. He was IN the ride for test runs and some people participated in that, so they saw him. But after the effects proved to be difficult, he was removed. Now, they could just make him using CGI or something.
I Like this Version a little more than the final Graveyard Jamboree! 5:33 its more wild and.. has a wooooooooaaah! feel to it. Imagine a hundred ghosts singing that around you!
when they do the busts with that light from 5:35 to 5:50 its really neat didnt know they did that with the singing busts i thought it was all anamatronics (however you spell it)
iam an ex castmember of the haunted mansion and i was told that a man on LSD had a gun and was hallucentating and thought teh pictures of the men shooting were real and shot at the glass. they didnt replace it because the ride would be shut down for awhile. so they put a spinder web type sticker to cover it
when hinges creek in doorless chambers when strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls whenever candlelight's flicker where the air is deathly still that is the time when ghosts are present practicing there terror with goolish delight!(i've always wanted to say that!)
If you are referring to the crack in the screen that separates the buggies from the ballroom then its where a guest threw a rock (or some other hard object) at the glass... as apposed to replacing the entire screen (which would have required the entire attraction being closed for some time) they merely converted the crack into a spider web motif,,,
The only improvement was the chase scene, because it's more beliveable to have pirates looting the place, rather than having the wenches carrying food.
We've been holding back and saving our Haunted Mansion coverage! So far, we've covered Expedition Everest and POTC on PipersPicksTV - but HM certainly is on the books!
I really wish Mark Davis would of gotten his entire wish, I would've enjyed the ride so much more. I really do love the special effects, but hate being scared
@erikals2 Yeah it was like a pop-up-book type set up, three dimensional type thing. Mostly cardboard but lots of moving parts. It was a cool and creepy game.
@Bellalisa: The thing is...the Mansion CAN BE silly, fun, AND scary WITHOUT it being campy like the 2003 film, because the Mansion was a dual-designed ride, meant to be both scary & silly. Coats did the scary parts (ex: attic) & Davis did the silly parts (ex: graveyard).
Silent Birthday Hahaha, woah, throwback! I absolutely have! I got over my fears in my early teens - but still close my eyes at the graveyard party scene when things pop out 😂 I’m not scared, just easily surprised!
@nerdymisfit: Yet, Constance's VA read aloud one of those very stories involving the early incarnation of Emily, Constance's bleeding heart predecessor, entitled Nuptial Doom, so make of that what you will.
@runswithcoyote17 lol! that is awesome u went on a feild trip there! i never noitice people looking at us only if there there. but the ghosts aremade form light
@Singamajigfan200 But then if I go on the Haunted Mansion, then I will miss all the cute stuff, because it tends to get crowded quickly, IE Fantasy Land in particular. I have a remedy for the Haunted Mansion, its Splash Mountain, since it tends to be such a quick wait and such a long ride, it helps. Lol. But thank you for the tip ;)
To continue, Peter Pan, Snow White, and Alice are pretty much linear re-tellings of their stories, and your vehicle is just your seat for the show. But PotC wasn't telling a story. Now it's telling the story of how the Spanish village is protecting Jack despite the fact they have a treasure they know he would want. WTF? It's just not as good as before.
I think the first one was a good movie, but the 2nd and 3rd ones, meh. I personally think that the 60's attractions like the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Submarine Voyage were great because they weren't copid from a cartoon. Sure, I love Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but they aren't really unuiqe. The WDW Mr. Toad was, but it's long gone, and 20k was pretty much a copy of Submarine voyage. The Jack renovations just made it an advert for the movie.
@LexiAlexxa: Constance is a JOKE. She is WEAK. The only good thing is that her VA, Kat, paid ODE to Emily, her bleeding heart predecessor, by recording the "Nuptial Doom" supposed backstory regarding Captain Blood & the earliest incarnation of Emily, before she became known as Master Gracey's second wife.
@AliceJamesandAlondra: Feh. They only updated the PotC ride because the movies were successful. If the 2003 HM movie weren't such a stupid travesty dud on the Mansion's legacy, we might've gotten Eddie Murphy autoanimatronics into the Mansion. Thank whatever spirits protecting the Mansion that such a notion never--heh--materialized.
i liked the movie ok, but the ride wold have been horrible if it had a movie like addition. the pirates of the carribean change was bad enough, and they did it to capitalize on the media buzz. ps, if you ever ride it , count the strands of pearls on the widow
I can only imagine how the ride would have been if it stayed completely scary.
The Hatbox Ghost is considered to be the ghost that has been most talked about. Love how this ride is still there since it opened
Tony and Bruce were right about how we waited for this to open. I hoped to take my girlfriend there on my all night party but we finally made it on hers just after it opened. From our Ghost Host, to KARR in Knight Rider (and everything in between), Paul Frees was a legend. One of the greats, alongside Mel Blanc.
Look at the history of this ride makes me like it even more! Good times! I'll never stop loving this ride
always my favorite ride...had the boardgame as a kid too. Thanks for posting this.
Disney's most wonderful creation.
Man, I remember this. It was on the HM DVD, and it was only available through the computer. I had the hardest time setting it up! I don't think it existed before the movie, though, and I'd watch it over the movie any day!
This ride used to scare me shitless as a kid! Especially the beginning when they cram you in that room! And that body is hanging from the ceiling!!
I love this documentary about my favorite ride
That's why Disney was so much better back then, than it is now.
Wow, Walt was so clever, he really did love authenticity, and that led to big bucks, although, i'm pretty sure that wasn't his intenstions. I'm sure he just wanted the guest to enjoy the ride as much as possible.

going back to disney world on the 19 and cant wait 4 the haunted mansion
I Like this Version a little more than the final Graveyard Jamboree! 5:33
its more wild and.. has a wooooooooaaah! feel to it. Imagine a hundred ghosts singing that around you!
"Horntoads, and Lizzards - Friddle and Frum. Please answer the role, by beating the drum!" Madam Leota doesn't say that in the ride.
This is fascinating. Wish I could be a host at that lovely mansion. 💜👻💀
This is my favorite place in Disneyland.
Thank you.
George Vreeland Hill
when they do the busts with that light from 5:35 to 5:50 its really neat didnt know they did that with the singing busts i thought it was all anamatronics (however you spell it)
that honey i shrunk the kids thing really needs to go too.
@SockBoy65: Actually, her tracks were redone multiple times, using multiple lines. So, it was in the ride originally.
this was great
iam an ex castmember of the haunted mansion and i was told that a man on LSD had a gun and was hallucentating and thought teh pictures of the men shooting were real and shot at the glass. they didnt replace it because the ride would be shut down for awhile. so they put a spinder web type sticker to cover it
I worked at this attraction on the college program! Most amazing six months of my life!
when hinges creek in doorless chambers
when strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls
whenever candlelight's flicker where the air is deathly still
that is the time when ghosts are present practicing there terror with goolish delight!(i've always wanted to say that!)

I'm 40 and I love the ride. =)
lol I can see Zak bagans from Ghost Adventures doing the voice of it. Though I love Vince Price as the creepy voice.
RIP Bruce Gordon. He passed away last week.
The only improvement was the chase scene, because it's more beliveable to have pirates looting the place, rather than having the wenches carrying food.

@erikals2 Yeah it was like a pop-up-book type set up, three dimensional type thing. Mostly cardboard but lots of moving parts. It was a cool and creepy game.
@coasterjudge: Agreed. That's a nice idea.
Thanks for posting!
Where is this video from?
@runswithcoyote17 That's a good field trip for a kid! They may have seen you too.. In Pepper's Ghost form.
I hope they put him in next time they renovate it. Mabye with new technology the illusion will work. He would fit with the head-chopping bride.
There are so many amazing effects in The Haunted Mansion- I wish I wasn't so scared to ride it... ^_^
Hey it's been 10 years have you gotten to ride the haunted mansion yet?
Silent Birthday Hahaha, woah, throwback! I absolutely have! I got over my fears in my early teens - but still close my eyes at the graveyard party scene when things pop out 😂 I’m not scared, just easily surprised!
@mokana713 It's designed to never stop. But there are always going to be problems, luckily they've upgraded it so it should stop less often.
You are so nice.
You are so cool.
You are so handsome.
You are my friend.
;] I love this video! And YOU, Bee Bear!
there was a body hanging from the ceiling in the streching room? i never noticed that, probably because i never looked at the ceiling lol
Agreed
@TherealRNO On the bright side if the new Guirmo Del Toro version of the film takes off, we may get the Hatbox Ghost back.
i love the concept art
it's creepy
i like that
anyone know where I can view more?
@mokana713
Good call on that one!
@nerdymisfit: Yet, Constance's VA read aloud one of those very stories involving the early incarnation of Emily, Constance's bleeding heart predecessor, entitled Nuptial Doom, so make of that what you will.
@coasterjudge
No- It stops for people who have trouble getting on.
Or at least some live ghosts/monsters inside during the october season.
Wow
@runswithcoyote17 LUCKY U GOT TO GO BEHIND DA SCENES!!
did u add music to it?
i think the only ride that walt created that hasent changed one bit is the tiki room. wich isnt really a ride. but it hasent changed :P
I would pay $2,000 just to have been there on opening day.

But thank you for the tip ;)
89 people fell into a snake pit
Did Walt say the ghosts "do get pissed" at 5:10 in response to the lady not believing in ghosts?
they use mirrors to make the corridor look long it's on wikapidia
I love the Haunted Mansion...even though it scared me.
every room has wall to wall creeps and hot and cold running chi``lls

@Bellalisa: That's why it's being remade by Del Toro.
Ah, poor lost Hatbox. I wonder where you are today.
@TherealRNO You're right.
And the movie doesn't exsist to me, it makes me made just to think about it.
The name for that is pepper ghost.
@wiisalute they could use moving models
ok the aesthetci
@steel4eva Yup I just missed it just like I just missed Woodstock. :>(
SNAKEPIT?!
@coasterjudge it has been a rumor and confirmed that the hatbox ghost will come back
spooky :S

@TherealRNO You're right, I am a wuss.
I'm the type of person that LOVES scaring people but hates being scared.
Thrill rides are an exception.
Ask the fans.
@tregnier279 - Hilarious! Good point! I wished they didn't put johnny depp in POC. It's too commercially.
IL thi ride
The Omnimover? Never stops? XD Lies, lies...
6 people are scared of ghosts
@AliceJamesandAlondra: Feh. They only updated the PotC ride because the movies were successful. its 360p apparently
@erikals2 I have my application in for ghost 1000.
7:02, HATBOX GHOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When did this shitty comment come up in my notifications
Walt Disney was a great man :)
i liked the movie ok, but the ride wold have been horrible if it had a movie like addition. the pirates of the carribean change was bad enough, and they did it to capitalize on the media buzz.
ps, if you ever ride it , count the strands of pearls on the widow
@wiisalute their realy models (clay or otherwise)
@WeLoveDisney08: Captain BLOOD, not gore.
@runswithcoyote17 thanks for ruining it for me,
@runswithcoyote17 JEALOUS
SOSOJEALOUS
I'm glad the movie flopped. I don't think I could stomach an Eddiematonic in the graveyard saying "Don't say crap!"
Fidel Castro at 3:40
No, you don't. Now the POTC ride is awful. I grew up with the allready botched WDW version, and it was tolerable. The Jack renovations ruined it.
i wish they'd make a new haunted mansion with todays technology. how awesome would that be? :)
Try a little compassion. And be glad it's them instead of you.
Thumbs up if you got a chill from the ghost host at the beggining!
Its not scary at all now
