    In my opinion, Atlantis, and Treasure Planet were two of the most underrated films Disney ever made.

    I rode the subs with my family in the 60s. Had a great time. The hatched leaked going under the waterfall. We all got free Disney t-shirts. Wouldn't happen today. Miss those great days at Disney with my family.

    They should have done Atlantis, it would have fit well with Tomorrowland and look really good.

      The lost Island or continent of Atlantis would have been more exciting and mysterious. Kids would still want to ride on any ride called a submarine.

    Loved the Subs as a kid, and then as I was a teenager they were walled up and seemingly gone forever. I moved on from Disneyland, but coming back decades later it's great to have them back.

    You have to give the Disney engineers and designers credit to build such a beautiful and complicated attraction. To anyone who has owned a boat...you know how hard it is to maintain, the colors fade, the hull gets stained and from day one water tries to seep into the hull from any crack or weak spot. Yet these Disney engineers come up with ways to keep the coral from fading, to replace the engines with electricity and keep the subs dry and floating. Tremendous achievements. And superior maintenance. Bravo Disney !

      We rode the subs yesterday. There was water leaking down the inside of the hull where my 7 year old daughter was sitting, just behind and to the right of the sub "driver" on the Nautilus sub. And then when it was docking a large amount of water dumped down the side from underneath the rivets above her window and the rubber gasket around the driver's bubble. It splashed onto my daughter and the floor inside. I informed the driver and another cast member when we got out but she said it was likely from the a/c. It was way too much water to be condensation from the a/c but I'm no engineer. I do think the subs might be a little leaky due to their age but since they aren't fully underwater nor pressurized it's probably not a huge concern although I hope they investigate the leak.

    I was on the last sub that went around the lagoon in 1998. Atlantian Encounter was actually being worked on while the ride was still open. There was a sub tricked out with all the lights and effects. I knew someone in imagineering so I was told what was going on but the sub crew was not allowed over there. It was to be like Alien Encounter but in a submarine. It sounded amazing and terrifying. I think the tag line to the ride was "Save your last breath to scream"
    Nice job on the video. I wish I would have known how much work went into the new front when I rode Finding Nemo. I would have appreciated it more.

    I remember going on the original sub ride when i was really little, and i remember how fantastic the mermaids were. finding nemo just didn't have that element of "wow!" for me, it seemed like a really old ride (even though there's the animation) and i felt that they could have done so much more with it.

  • @phyternl
    @phyternl 6 лет назад +1

    If you're concerned about electrified water, don't be. Something was lost in translation in the video. There is no electrified water. The subs are in fact battery powered. The batteries are charged via a series of induction coils they mate to when they pull into the dock. It is true that the power passes through the water, but in the form of electromagnetic radiation, not in the form of electricity which wouldn't work anyway since electricity follows the path of least resistance and would end up skimming the surface. It's essentially the same magnetic induction charging technology that many of us have for our cell phones; an induction pad and an on board rectifier. When the boat stops beside the pad, induction kicks in, power is transferred and the batteries charge. You could put your face between the pad and hull and not feel a thing.. except.. you would be very wet.

    lol it took some research thats for sure! That really is Disneys magic though. Finding incredibly simple, practical ways to achieve things that have amazing visual impact. I was figuring they just ran power cables through the diesel exhaust and air inlet pipes the original sub used. But alas, they are far more creative than that!

    • @detronyx
      @detronyx 10 лет назад +3

      Captain Brickhead Actually, it's interesting. Epcot's Nemo ride is essentially exactly what you will see on Disneyland's subs, but with real fish involved. You're just riding subs instead of shells. Disneyland has a Little Mermaid ride that uses the clamshell seating that Epcot's Nemo ride uses.

  • @MrRobarino
    @MrRobarino 10 лет назад +9

    @electrictroy2010. Did you watch the video before you commented?? This isn't a modern navy, this is an amusement park attraction where literally thousands of people ride on daily. The diesel engines in them were from the 50's, hence they were noisy, polluting, required alot of maintenance, and were far from cost effective. They were in fact from the days of diesel engines being dirty.

    • @petedongara1935

      Sure that happened....... Tell us the ships name and number. You can look up every Navy Vessel as far back as the revolutionary war and I will look it up
      A real Navy sub is to big and is not designed for this and is way to big. The Disneyland submarine vessels are actually boats that don’t fully “dive”, but still provide a realistic experience for guests.

    Let's see...make a ride themed around a movie that few kids or adults liked or theme it around a movie that everyone loves. Building an entire theme ride around Atlantis would have been a major financial failure.
    Oh, and incidentally, Fantasia was not a "major flop" due to people not liking it. It had trouble because it was released during World War II which made it difficult to distribute. Once WWII was over, the movie was reissued and the profits rolled in. Get your facts straight.

  • @cretsinger
    @cretsinger 9 лет назад

    Before the update of the ride, there where missile silo doors below the water of the submarine ride near the Matterhorn side. At that time you could see them if you looked close enough you could see them hidden, along with the the door tracks in all the attached coral and such below the water. I have not been back their since the remodel, but if any of you look where mentioned, these HUGE missile silo doors still may be there. At one time you could search the internet for this and find items posted, but for whatever reason, it appears to have been removed or "buried". It would be great if others out there could look for them if they are still there, post a RUclips video showing them.

    yes we are. they had three, count em, three nemo attractions in one year! the musical, the seas, and this. back in the day, a movie was lucky to get one attraction! plus we have turtle talk, block party bash, crush's coaster...will it ever end?! disney needs to think up several original rides, not just use the same concept for all their new ones.

    @V3roniicashawt Actually, like most Disney rides, it's pretty safe. Each sub fits 20 people on each side and the cast members that run it are trained on what to do in emergency's. They have plans for pretty much any scenario.

    • @darrylbernard8885
      @darrylbernard8885 6 лет назад

      ktwesterna problem is,you are basically stuck on the sub if anything happens. If the hatches were open and people let out then you know somebody is bound to slip and fall off,and while the water is shallow it's still deep enough for someone to drown in.

    The early Disneyland blows away the current one. We had drivable hovercars, drivable cars (no track) REAL women scantily dressed as mermaids who were underwater in the submarine ride (they sipped air through little tubes near them but otherwise swam around the subs). And other great stuff. This started getting ruined in the early 70's. Admission was a pittance also.

    Finding Nemo isn't that old, so I would imagine it being more well known with the younger crowds these days. Fantasia came out in the 40's, and became widely popular decades later when my dad was a kid. Helping build a ride isn't exactly celebrity status worthy either. I have a few friends who also work at Disneyland.

    I just went on Saturday, the wait was 2 HOURS!!! If you wait that long, then I guess you have nothing better to do because pretty much EVERY line at Disney land is 2 hours and as miranda Sings says," just saying!"

    I was at Disney in California a few years ago. While walking around. I saw the Subs. And it was being used. This is 2015 or 16. Why are there so many videos about it closing? Isn't it still operating?

    don't go on this if you're claustrophobic or you're pretty much just standing in line so you can feel like your dying
