    THE FOLLOW UP ON CTR ruclips.net/video/Ip_lTZo67R4/видео.html
    It's worth noting btw (if this wasn't clear enough already at least) that the point of my video isn't GRAAAA NO MORE REMAKES EVER WGAHAHAHA because great things can come out of them. It's just that, usually when that's the case, it's because someone was inspired by something, in a way where they felt like they could add to it significantly. The RE1 remake feels like that. They saw potential in the first game, and had a go at fulfilling it.
    What I dislike is the more cynically motivated nostalgia bating efforts, and that, with people screaming at the top of their lungs for more remakes, we'll be seeing more of those.
    Like, remember when Konami showed that MGS3 Pachinko thing? I saw a lot of people mad, not only because it "shat on the legacy" but also because "those cutscenes could've gone into a full on MGS3 remake", and literally what unfulfilled potential is left in MGS3, other then it potentially looking a bit nicer? It's pointless. And I personally feel that a lot of classics sit in that camp.
    They can't add shit, but demand demands it so they'll try anyway, resulting in perception revising mixed bags. I would prefer it if that would stop maybe, pretty though things may be.
    Otherwise though, I think more "modernized" or wildly different interpretation style remakes are cool, because that shit actually does introduce new people. I say as much when talking about FF7 and RE2. This video is pretty much just aimed at the old dudes want old shit to be new shit, while often also then being pissed off when that new shit's too new.
    IMO that could foster an industry or community that's only cynically wallowing in the past, pleasing an ever growing demand for old new shit, that will never fully be fulfilled, and thus forever perpetuating the same old shit.

      ThorHighHeels I agree with you...mostly. I personally like the idea of remakes, not necessarily just because of improvements gameplay and graphics wise, but because newer players will most likely look at an old game and go “it looks really bad, dated, has references nobody would get these days, etc”. A remake would give a more “modern” look and feel that could attract new players to it like flies to a delicious cheeseburger (I’m hungry, sue me). All of that on top of just “untapped potential” (due to lack of ability at the time) and ideas that the creators couldn’t put in due to technical issues (Not big enough space on the disk, the game cannot make graphics look realistic, or other reasons). These are my reasons for why I am pro remake. Besides, if the remake is bad, people who like the original can just go back to the original. No loss, no foul. Hope you appreciate this opinion! 😅

    • @thorhighheels

      I do! This video was mostly targeted at people looking to "re-experience" games from their youths, but then asking for it to be remade with super specific conditions that will never be met. But I do agree they can be good for new comers. RE2 in particular seems to have brought on many new players, as even I haven't played the original. So there's value in that for sure.
      What I will say, however, is that I don't really feel that there's "no loss no foul" when a remake messes up. That Crash Remake for instance, brought a lot of "crash hasn't aged well and is too hard" hot takes with it, that tainted how those people now think of the originals, despite the originals not being anywhere near that hard because they controlled better. It feels like it's revising history in a way, at least for a subset of people (some of whom game journalists with a whole lot of reach), and I don't like that. But that might not matter much in the long run, who knows.

      As long as enough time has passed that what the original game was, and what the remake ends up being are almost 2 different games gameplay-wise, I’m happy, re2 is basically a new game in every aspect except the same basic story, like you said in the vid something like the crash and Spyro remakes are just more hd upgrades with nothing besides graphics really changed. There’s a certain time period where remakes become pointless, I want a 3make, but I’ve heard people saying they want a re4 remake also and for that one, it’s still too recent, if you aren’t Re-imagining the original with the original just being used as a guide to build a new game, then something doesn’t need a remake

    I definitly understand why people want remakes. They want to see what they love without the limitations of the past. Its a mix of: Curiosity, nostalgia and new standards which leads to the desire of remakes. A remake let people come back to what they love, but in a way they are now used to, and also it also statisfice the curiosity of how these games would feel and look today. What I dont understand is: why it has to be a complete remake and not a new game in the old style? Sometimes old games doesnt had great ideas in the beginning (for example all fucking flying maps in Spyro). I think the reason why the companies do remakes instead of new games in old style is: Its safer. Its cost less monetos (since most of the conception/layout is already there) and in the end there is the bonus of : people want to see their past BUT(T) in HD. I for my part dont need Remakes, the reason for this is simple: I can always play the original. I can play with the stiffer controlls, "bad" grafic .... in general im more forgiving for unpolished gameplay... But many cant. Ps: Before anybody ask why i dont have some space in my text block..... I wrote it on the smartphone... I have no freaking idea how to :)

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  5 лет назад +28

      Yeah that's kinda my thing too. I was talking about this with a friend just now. He asked me "are there any games you would want remade though?" and the very few I could think of, are all games that had cool ideas on paper, that weren't executed all that well. However, even despite me feeling that way, I'd still much rather see those improved executions used in a sequel to those games, rather then a retread of what we already got.
      I guess ironically, Final Fantasy VII might be the only exception for me, thinking about it now. They could for sure make an ever CLASSICER CLASSIC out of that CLASSIC, just as how Capcom did with RE1 & 2. But I feel like the games where you can pull that off are super rare, as you need an exact mix of already great, wasted potential, and expandability regarding it's existing concepts, without the risk of taking away from whats already there. And even then I'd say it's super hard to pull off.

      Agreed. I'd much rather play the old games because when they remake something they often times dumb it down. For example, the RE2 Remake's puzzles were a joke, you only need ink ribbons on hardcore, you had way more inventory space than in the original, etc.

    • @jazzmaster909
      @jazzmaster909 5 лет назад +5

      @@HateMyself247"Oh no its not an exact copy paste of the previous game, this is dumbed down". the Puzzels in RE2 were just as easy as they were in the Remake, and the extra inventory space is sounds more like "back in my day" nitpick.

      @HateMyself247 5 лет назад +5

      @@jazzmaster909 "Oh no, someone who has an opinion different than my own! Better criticize their blatant wrong think and accuse them of being blinded by nostalgia."
      The puzzles in the original RE2 seem easy now after over 20 years of solving them over and over, but they were much harder than the puzzles in the remake. A perfect example of how they were harder is that when you need to use an item on something in a specific place, in the remake there's a button prompt on the thing you need to interact with, when you press the button the camera zooms into it and opens the inventory telling you you need to use something. In the original, you just had to check things on your own and figure it out. For example, the fireplace with the painting over it. You examine THE PAINTING, not the fire place. and it's pretty obvious you need to do something with it, but it never opens the menu and alerts you to use an item. You just have to THINK to light the fire place that the game has done nothing to draw your attention to. The key word is THINK. Modern games don't require thought, just being able to follow directions and push buttons.
      And no, the inventory complaint is not a nitpick. It's a legitimate one, seeing as Resident Evil is SUPPOSED to be a survival horror series, limited inventory space creates more challenge and requires you to THINK ahead and THINK about what you might need and what you can bare to leave behind. But Resident Evil stopped being survival horror long ago sadly... ever since RE4.
      Also, those were just a few examples, I could point out the blatant dumbing down in the RE2 remake for hours. Almost EVERYTHING about the game is an example of dumbing down.

  • @Coestar
    @Coestar 5 лет назад +72

    I think the kind of remake people want, even if they don't exactly say it or know it, is like Resident Evil 2. Resident Evil 2 Remake is excellently done and doesn't replace the original game, as you point out. They take the original's framework and essentially build a new game on top of it. Resident Evil 1 Remake was also great in the same way. I took the opportunity to play the original RE2 before the remake came out, and have alternated between each campaign as I've gone (Leon A PS1, Leon A remake, Claire B PS1, etc.), and I love the fact that the remake stands on its own and isn't just a replacement for the original. I hope the FF7 remake takes a similar path, I have no interest in just a graphical upgrade. The exciting thing for a FF7 remake is seeing what they can do with that world without the limitations of 1997 holding them back.

    RE2 is not a remake, it is a reimagining. Capcom said it themselves.
    As for the reimagining, I loved it and 100% it. But there are cuts and changes that the original did better.
    The A and B scenarios are worse than the original. Capcom completely abandoned the way the original made them feel different yet connected.
    There's lots of cuts to the great enemy variety too. I miss Zombie Brad, but he was likely cut as most costumes were sold as dlc.
    I truly appreciate that most of the extras and rewards were kept unlockable in the game. But, the stuff cut for dlc is scummy. The classic music especially, as the reimagining's soundtrack is not as good.
    Then there's the cuts to the story like: showing why that helicopter randomly kamikaze into the RPD, Tyrants being air dropped into Raccoon City, and much of Leon and Claire's interactions throughout the game.
    And I can't be the only one who thinks Birkin is freakin dead and could not have injected himself with the G virus. They even confirm he's dead lol.
    The characters also cuss way too much and there in game remarks are annoying. I think Claire was the worse depicted in this treatment. Cusses unnecessarily and loves to screech at high pitch stuff like, "Stay away!" or, "What the fuuuu!"
    I still think RE1 Remake is still the best remake as it stayed more faithful to the PS1 classic.
    I've been hoping since RE5 that the franchise would reboot and go back to being about cool characters fighting Umbrella. And that's pretty much what RE2 Reimagining has done.
    I enjoyed many of the games post RE5, but story and character wise? No, not all. Revelations 1 had no bearing on RE canon at all
    Revelations 2 retcons a Wesker sister. RE6, well, excellent 3rd person action game with lots of content, but terrible story and retcons.
    As for RE7, didn't give a single damn about Ethan, Mia, or any of the mains. And Chris joining Umbrella...no...just no...

    This was what I hated about the MediEvil remake. I love the original PS1 game, but it's a game that I felt needed a new sequel with modern design capabilities that expanded on its potential. All the remake did was change the visuals, fixing nothing about the original's shortcomings and doing nothing substantial to expand on any of its ideas. It's a PS4 game that played exactly like the original PS1 game (while visually looking like a PS3 game, as the graphical upgrade wasn't even given a premium budget). In the end, there was nothing I enjoyed about the remake that I didn't already appreciate about the original, and after 20 years, it was a huge disappointment to see one of my favorite IP finally get a new release, only for it to be the exact same thing I'd always enjoyed. With game remakes, I don't want to "re-experience" anything. I want to experience something familiar in a new light. Though I'm probably a hypocrite in saying that because it always kind of bugs me when a remake uses a different visual style from the original, lol.

      You realize the majority of remasters specifically are outsourced to other companies like bluepoint right? That's not taking resources away from a game Sony JapanStudio could be making just because Shadow of the Colossus got remade, because it's not really them. And in the case of the Spyro and Crash remasters, being that neither studio has had a great track record for handling crash and Sypro, their remakes give them the tools and groundwork to potentially take what they learned, and make new games in those franchises due to the fact they had to make those old games from scratch. On top of the fact it makes those games playable on modern hardware and spruced up visually.

    I think the best remakes are when a game could have been made better now then it was then, removing the things that may have held it back at the time to make something better. Even better if it was a game that was bad they decided to remake to make it actually decent because it had potential more than was it good to begin with. I've played plenty of games that had such good ideas or settings or whatever, but because of the technical limitations or (*insert financial, corporate, or direction problems here*), etc it did not turn out to be what it could have been. That to me is what a remake should be. Keeping the first game mostly intact and adding onto it stuff that makes it better, fixes it, and makes it worth re-buying. The problem is I can't think of a time when something didn't sell well but someone thought "Hmm this didn't sell well, maybe we can do it better now". No, it usually boils down to, "What is a popular title that people know and will shell out money for without thinking?" and likely those are games that don't really need remakes because they were fine as they were before. If anything they should call them reboots if they change the game in such great detail that it doesn't resemble the same game. That's just my opinion though and I'm only a dead mathematician and/or rapping paper dog, so what do i know?

    I can't even fathom being excited for anything related to Final Fantasy 7 anymore. I guess I'm biased because it was never my favorite by any stretch. But even I was excited when they started announcing spin-offs, sequels, movies and remakes. Because I thought Square was going to go back and tell us more about about the worlds of Final Fantasy we had only seen one adventure in.
    But no. It's only Midgar/Gaia. And it's only Cloud. And Tifa. And the obligatory ghost of Aerith or whatever the fuck her name is. It's the sensation that's taken the world by storm: callbacks to FF7: how many can fit in this piece of commercial entertainment?
    Not to mention Square's vision for the series hasn't lined up with mine for the last five mainline games, but don't get confused because they've only managed five in the last 15 or 20 fucking years.
    At least FF7's development is going smoothly...meaning this THIRD round of development, in which the director (whose track record is questionable to say the least) found out he was the director only by asking and receiving some oblique answer like a Dark Souls riddle. I guess making Final Fantasy games for 35 years as a company doesn't prepare you for the arduous process of producing and marketing a Final Fantasy game, so just announce it whenever idiot.
    So why are people gushing over Resident Evil 2's remake? Because it's awesome. It doesn't really matter if people were asking for it, or why they asked for it, but in the end it's all well that ends well if Capcom delivered a wonderful experience that captures the tension and fear of solving puzzles near zombies but is willing to take some of the retardation out of the puzzles. I personally don't wish for remakes, and I was skeptical of RE2, but in the end it's exactly what I wish the games had turned into instead of 4-6
    Here's hoping FF7 remake never even completes production!

An old game that can be adapted to a more modern audience with nice QOL features that are often optional.
    I loved playing games like Mother 1 back in the day but nowadays it's hard to stomach an old JRPG with that type of grinding. So remasters or romhacks that better balance the amount of xp and money gained from battles really makes it more accessible without losing much of the original intent if done properly.

    I don't really see what's hard to get with JRPG remakes. Their whole shtick were huge cities and dank art styles, and not only would people wanna explore more of them, they'd also wanna explore them in more detail than what was previously possible. I know I'd rather Kingdom Hearts trough Midgar than static pre-rendered screen trough it. Furthermore, I definitely would prefer it if turn based combat made a return, because there was barely anything wrong with it.
    That's just the thing, the PS1 generation didn't have enough power there to fully realize what the creators probably envisioned, so there's nothing wrong with wanting their full vision realized, or their vision expanded upon. I fail to see how most fans wouldn't want that.
    Of course, that's a load of bull when it comes to Crash and Spyro, not only did they ruin the aesthetic to varying degrees, both also play significantly worse for the most part, and one's so stupidly made that it causes motion sickness and other motion blurry shenanigans, making it basically unplayable to some people.
    On an unrelated note, the Spyro remake should be pulled from shelves until they axe the motion blur.
    Yeah, totally unrelated.

    • @shawnjavery
      @shawnjavery 5 лет назад

      You give some reasons why, but overall I think the cons far outweigh the pros a remake for a Jrpg. Character designs don't tend to age well, ff7 is a big example of this I think, since the more realistic graphic of modern games can make the designs look ridiculous. Then there's the fact that the story will be more or less the same as in the original game, which means that the plot twists will not land like they did the first time. If there are changes to the story it will likely be due to fan opinion, like for example having Aerith live in FF7R, which cheapens the impact her death had the first time.
      You're entitled to your opinion but I think that there are many flaws to remaking a jrpg that will make one a worse experience than a new game.

    • @Peasham
      @Peasham 5 лет назад +1

      @@shawnjavery What's wrong with ridiculous designs in a JRPG? It's kinda their thing. Barret isn't any less ridiculous than he was back in the day.
      As for the story, it depends on whether or not it's an improvement. But, if people still get emotional over Aerith's death despite them knowing it's coming, the rendering said death with better graphics and music would increase the impact exponentially. People love twists because they tend to make iconic scenes. And if those scenes can be improved, and they can, then what's the problem?

But I'll never stop wanting to smack people who are constantly asking for remakes. Heck, even with FFVII, I don't think a remake should have happened, in any form. And yes, I agree with Resident Evil, that it could have been its own scenario, and perhaps could have even been better off for it. I think of remakes as if they meant for people who never played the originals and not the fans, it may not be true but it helps justify why they exist. Some fans will be impossible to please so I say dont even try with remakes just try to make a new experience. I could play the originals but for me it's very difficult to go back and play games with much worse graphics and controls that I'm used to. I'm not saying remake eveything but I think it's fine to do it with 20+ year old games and even then only if they didnt age well. I understand that remakes can stall franchises but they take nothing away from the originals. Hearing some people say that a remake somehow ruins or could ruin their experience of playing the original game is just rediculous. As for games I have played and if any were remade I would not buy and play the remakes unless they changed the experience similar to what re2 did, but for people who weren't even born when the original games came out this could be great. I have never played resident evil games until re2 remake came out, it looked great and I decided to pick up re1 remake and also play that, now I want to play more games in franchise, remakes or not now I'm invested. Without remakes I would have probably never bothered with resident evil. While I see that this remake trend is a slippery slope that could get out of control and it doesnt progress the gaming industry because its rehashing the same ideas I cant help but participate.

    OH BOY! IT'S ESSAY TIME!
    My first reaction after seeing the trailer for *Legend of Zelda Link Awakening's remake,* followed by Koizumi's smug smile, was butwhy.gif. Looks like a toybox, compared to the "living breathing world inside your Gameboy" aesthetic of the original.
    Although that didn't dissuade the zelda fanboys to circlejerk all over it.
    This applies to almost all the examples you've used in your video, and which is my main criticism for it.
    *All these games were made within the limitations of their hardware.* A "faithful" remake of such games would be pointless (ie not replace the original).
    BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE
    a) Games that were trying to push beyond the limits, but their remake realized it and/or can realize them.
    Eg : Most consider REmake to be one of the few "replace the original" remake. Do you know what else comes to that list? *Homeworld Remastered.*
    The original was a 3D strategy game that was trying its damn hardest to push beyond its limit, that the remaster (after the balance patch) finally hit the nail on.
    b) Remake is worst than the original.
    Eg : *Monkey Island*
    Google "Dynamic music Monkey Island 2" and you'll be shocked as to why the original is still not digitally sold (and that how good emulation is necessary for preservation).
    c) Remake "reviving" the series.
    Eg : *XCOM*
    2K held the rights for the brand and wanted to use it for making an action game, with a classic style remake at its side. Guess which one got critical and commercial success and which is the one everyone tries to forget.
    Many hardcore purists of the original disregard the nu-COM games because they "cater to the casuals" (which is not true, both are hard games), but while there are differences, nu-COM won over because of better more readable UI, use of 3D providing better perspective and overall "modern" presentation.
    d) Like the original, but not really.
    Eg : *Street Fighter 2 (and its versions)* vs *Super Street Fighter 2*
    I've read that whole different communities have come around both of these games (so you can argue that these are separate games).
    E) Perspective change : *Maken vs Maken X* or *Baroque (PS1) vs Baroque (PS2)*
    F) Story oriented vs gameplay oriented : If leaving the point of presentation out of this discussion, former is more likely to have a more "liberal" remake than the latter.
    Eg (my mind got shut off and I forgot the examples, someone fill me in on this, lol)

    Not gonna lie, the only reason I wanted a direct remake of RE2 is because I'm afraid it might have been the last chance to ever see a new (well... at least newly made) high production value classic camera survival horror. I just like the style a lot, but I doubt they would return to it in an original entry.
    Maybe in 15 years some suit decides it's _just what's needed_ to refresh the series or whatever, but I'm not exactly optimistic.
    Otherwise I agree. I don't care about the remakes themselves - I have the originals, don't have a problem playing most old games and can safely ignore said remakes. It's the "I need a remake to bother" or "it got remade, so it MUST be better" attitudes I sometimes see in online discussions that bother me.

    DUDE! That was an amazing vid! A classic for sure! This video will be a nostalgic milestone for fans that complete redefined an era . I can't wait to see you remake it with better character models, higher resolution, unnecessary and distracting content, better voice acting (arguably), and an over the shoulder camera that no one asked for. THAT would be amazing.... because you know this video came out like two weeks ago, and hasn't aged very well. Actually on the second viewing I have to say this sucks. VIVA LA REMAKE!

    I would say RE2 is an exceptional remake because it actually is pretty close to the original. And after the last few RE games Capcom has produced I'm glad they have come back to their roots with this one. I still miss the pre rendered backgrounds and creepy camera angles but all and all I prefer this over any of the other recent RE games.

    I feel like you're taking for granted how willing you are to put up with the utter garbage visuals of some of the early PS1 games; you have a channel where you play those games regularly, you're quite used to it, but the average person isn't. Similarly, because you have your channel, you actually have a voice to discuss and talk about games that you're passionate about, which is something that the remakes and remasters give to everyone by reintroducing/refocusing the gaming zeitgeist around them. Resident Evil is a great example of this, there is now tons of discussion about how great both the new one is and how good the classic is by those that want to compare the differences. People finally have an impetus to talk about it, experience it together en masse, build a community around it.
    I would, without any doubt in my heart, gladly call a 5 year moratorium on production of any new games in order to remake and/or remaster every non-sprite based game in 1080/60. There are too many great games that never got their time in the sun, or were held back by hardware limitations.

    I think it's more of people not wanting to bother with old consoles and emulators, not actually some artistic reason they want remakes/remasters. Maybe some controls improvements along the way. And "old graphics". Although for me, graphics quirkiness of old consoles is really just a part of experience. It's like a style. I play on emulators and with anti-aliasing and resolution bumb up it's good as new. I don't even use 16:9 hacks - if the game is meant to be played at square aspect ratio then fine, it's not like I suffering here from anything.
    Oh, and another amazing reason I heard is "because I can play it legally". DUDE. It's 1996 game. You want to support developers - buy from them something new they put out recently. Half of people who worked on the game is probably dead/retired/changed company already.

    I don't get the remake logic either. It's like you want to see your old house where you grew up but instead you want that house to be renovated from the scratch which makes it look nothing like the house you actually grew up in. Remakes kinda contradict nostalgia.

    For me, I wanted an Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere remake and Racing Lagoon remastered just because we never got those in English . I mean we got AC3 but with the anime storyline stuff cut out. Thankfully the translation patch was done. I've heard some people wanted AC5 to be remade, and like, no. Why? The game's fine.
    I will say, a Racing Lagoon (sequel!!) sounds sexy. With visuals like the 2015 Need For Speed, with it's dim street lights and m o i s t roads, sexy square designed characters in a modern setting. I want it. It's the only thing I want from Square tbh.

    ... How do you don't get it, specially talking about ps1 games, where everything was really experimental and didn't have things to be based on?
    It's natural to want a re-do so the concepts can find its full potential. Metroid Zero Mission and both RE remakes are perfect examples of it.
    A lot of this games were way beyond they time and tried blind to bring some controls and concepts that weren't that polished yet

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  5 лет назад +1

      I know I express that in this very video. Many games that are considered classics however, DID reach their full potential, so fully remaking them seems pointless, yet that's what a lot of people are asking for. For most games, a simple remaster should suffice.

    I don't really think much about if a game is reboot, remake, remaster, rewhatever. All that matters to me is the experience it delivers. I sometimes play the original RE and sometimes the remake. They have the same title but ultimately they provide different experiences. I play dino crisis at least once every year because it is always fun, and if they rewhatever it one day I would probably check it out.

Same goes to any media, like TV, movies etc. I'd love to see less remakes but at the same time I won't mind either as long as it stays faithful to the original and fix their mistakes.

    I wish my brain weren't so stupid because then I'd be able to address all your spectacularly put points and have a real discussion. Alas, my brain is stupid so I've only the capacity to say "I agree". I even agree with a lot of the person-critical parts; I find myself to be a bit like Fucko, who constantly compares and contrasts - in my current Let's Play of Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, I'm *always* saying "Nope nope nope this isn't right" or "this is lovingly recreated" without much more commentary on it. There's so many points that struck a chord with me, but toward the end you say "all this [buying remakes] does is show how easily publishers can milk nostalgia", and that hit me hard - that someone else thinks (dare I say realises?) that instead of getting sequels from studios that are good at working with these franchises, we'll just see repeats until.... well, we don't. Until they stop making money, and we end up with what happened before - platform games stopped making money because there were too many in too little time. We're seeing it again now.
    I'm looking forward to the Crash Team Racing: Bollocks Naming Conventions Fuelled thingy, because I'm the fastest racer in the galaxy so I'm always right about kart racers so I know it'll be good and if it's not then it's objectively shit. But I'm under no illusions that Beenox (the developers) won't see work again. They'll be back to doing ports or just helping out like Vicarious Visions and Toys for Bob (the Spyro and Crash Remasturbators) are currently doing, and there'll definitely not be an original kart racer again. At best we can hope for DLC for any current or future games.
    Ending this, I loved how you compared Spyro the Dragon to Spyro Remasturbated (TRYING TO MAKE THAT WORD A THING GIVE ME A BREAK); once more you put my criticisms of art design to shame. I just talk about hues and pallettes and shit. Hashtag what's a pastel.
    Good work as ever, from me and my stupid brain.
    PS: You should check out the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger remasters on Steam. Overwhelmingly Positive, apparently! ^^

      It's all about ratio balance to me. You see too much of one thing, and your human brain is gonna wanna see the other side(s). It's like that saying "The grass is always greener on the other side"
      So too much Nostalgia (or remakes) and it feels like we're not advancing. Too much new stuff and it feels like we're forgetting the past and classics.

    When RE3make comes out, I at least want them to include the original. I don't want the REmakes to replace the original. With how different they are, they should stand along side it. This isn't coming from a fan. I've never played the first 3 RE games. If I do want to try them, I would like to try them in their original form. Not a different game with similar level design and story

    My feeling on remakes are this: if it's a good game that people like, don't remake it. No matter how hard you try, you'll never please everyone and there will always be something that someone prefers about the original. This causes a new issue of there no longer being a definitive version of the game.

    I can't think of a recent, good, new IP to come out of video games in a long time. When I think about the amount of remakes, remasters, and nostalgia-jerks present in pop culture, particularly gaming and cinema, I feel incredibly sad for the generation of children growing up in a world full of media made for adults who still want to feel like children... And how is that gonna translate when they get older?? I just want to see something wholly new, authentic and creative burst onto the scene, and it NOT be attached to some ridiculously overpowered corporation label that pumps out all incredibly indistinguishable media...

    I kind of agree with you and while I am looking forward to the KOTOR Remake, I kind of wish it was more of a soft reboot. I wanted it to acknowledge the last two games as canon while also doing its own thing like the new GOW, basically a KOTOR 3 but also being its own game as well. Now we're only going to get Disney's version of the events.

    It started getting silly with Medievil. The problem is, that game already looked great. The choppy framerate and low-poly models gave it a strong nightmare before Christmas, stop-frame animation vibe. My perfect remake of this game would carry this further with a plasticine feel. Or FF7, which again was made all the better with a low resolution, low poly, synth feel. It very strongly reminded me of Blade Runner, or a retro view of what the future would look like. So, for example, I love the high-resolution background mods, as they add to that vibe... But hate the high-poly character mod for the original.
    To be fair on the RE2 remake, I was amazed how close to the "feel" of the original it was... Although, owning a PSVR and RE7, I was really hoping they would add a brilliant VR mode with using the same engine.

    I think the perfect remake example is the Resident Evil GC remake, I like the RE2 remake but I have a soft spot for the fixed camera angles (thankfully there's a fixed camera mod for RE2 remake). It has enough of the old game that I love but it implemented new enemies, bosses, mechanics and overhauled the levels, so it included enough new things so that the remake isn't just the same game over again but it still feels like the original.
