  • While it's basically a retropie for me at this point, I can still review the OG offering. Like R4 Ridge Racer, Persona and... Rainbow Six, for some reason.

    Man R4 has STYLE. Actually the entire series does. The original had this karaoke machine aesthetic with the Asian beaches, closed-off coastal highways and festive vibes. Rage Racer was edgy, and the PSP onward had this plausible sleek future thing going on. You really don't need much knowledge of cars for these games. RR is the granddad of simple tap brake to drift arcade racers. Also MT means manual. Changing gears yourself seems hard, but you get used to it and realize you have way more agency of your speed and acceleration.
    I love the game's use of YELLOW and Impact font. Sure it's known as the meme generator font and it is the free go to thicc font of choice, but I really dig it. Kill Bill, Black Lagoon, AKIRA, Japanese model kit boxes (including the Gundams). I will defend this thicc boi.
    Ridge Racer Type 4 could've been my favorite entry in the series. I love it's style, track designs, MUSIC, car designs, and the physics were before the on rails drifting became too prominent. But unlocking cars is tedious. I don't want to lose on purpose to unlock a slower (but sometimes cooler looking) car. And I would've liked a quick race mode. Sure some can argue that the Ai are just on rails obstacles, which I get. But I REALLY would've liked to turn the announcer off. He's mostly fine, but in Time Attack he is sure annoying when you don't get a new record, and yells you about being slower than his grandma. Still, the aesthetic would influence me big time.

      @@michaelkitchin9665 Even the games that used licensed cars had better presentation back then. Gran Turismo always had classy presentations, tho the .menus were simpler and cooler before the PS3 era. Auto Modelista is what the Initial D games should've looked like. And the Tokyo Xtreme Racers always had great presentation, music, menus, and even boss intros, etc. in spite of questionable physics. As for western stuff, NFS has a fetish for good sound design, graphic design and shaky stylized camera angles. The presentation for these games were strong in the BlackBox era. The original Most Wanted was edgy af. And Codemasters racers looked cool, like the DiRT series. And lets not forget blur.
      I think the modern western racers have really bland presentation. Though I really like NFS2015's gritty moist roads artstyle and sorta kinda liked despite it playing like total ass. Like in a I wish this was good kinda way. Payback may have played better, but the presentation was bland and the map was boring, and favored hypercars, not to mention the dumb lootbox card system.

      yeah unlock cars was tedius, even i make a map of the unlock cars what i have and make my own theory of how to unlock these cars, i always have think the cars you unlock have relation with the place at finish the race, because i notice if where always finish first place i have the sames cars to unlock, so i intencional finish my races at 2th and i unlock new ones , so i mixed the places i started to get varius cars , in total there are 320 or somothing like that , 4 or 5 unlock in the trial mode , i unlock about 300 cars and i am tired of beat that game i remember all the tracks , i can even play the entire game in my mind

    Thor have you ever played the OG Alone in the Dark game? I can't exactly recommend it as essential, but I have a feeling you'd appreciate it. I came across it by chance with no idea how to play it and had to teach myself the entire game, even though it was the first PC game I'd played since Doom 2. I struggled through it and finally beat it, loving its creepy mansion, zombies, and horror-adventure gameplay. And because of that experience, a few years later when my friend's parents bought him a PS1 and Resident Evil (but no memory card) I was able to recognize what kind of game we were playing (even though we spent the first few days just laughing at the intro cutscene over and over and just running around Spencer mansion until we got killed). We pushed through, taking copious notes and adjusting our run, until we were finally able to beat it in one sitting, still blissfully unaware of what a memory card was or what the hell the ink ribbons did. Unknowingly, we were now Resi fanboys forever as well, and we've played all the games together as well as all the Silent Hill games.
    Anyway you can find Alone in the Dark on Steam, I think bundled with its (less interesting and polished) sequels for very few $$

    Y'know, I'm actually kinda wondering now which has aged better; the original, sprite-based Wild ARMs, or the 3d PS2 remake, Alter Code-F.
    They're both effectively the same game from a narrative stance. ACF just takes the "having more than 3 party members" thing from Wild ARMs 2, and the much, much better battle engine from Wild ARMs 3, so everything is smoother all-around. However, it's also 3d graphics, load times, and UX from more than 15 years ago, so.../shrug?
    Also, the sprite-based game makes use of some systems that blew away other old school RPGs of the time that I don't think made it over to the remake quite the same (stuff like spellcrafting, skill/weapon upgrades, all things we take as old hat now, but in '96 were still pretty impressive! get off my lawn!).

    FFVII- Deserves to be here
    Tekken 3- Deserves to be here
    Resident Evil DC- Maybe should have been RE2, but okay.
    Syphon Filter- Excellent. But not as good as 2.
    Twisted Metal- TM2 deserves to be here, but bit the first one which was awful.
    GTA- Errr, the second one was better. Should have been Driver though.
    Oddworld- Great game, but should have been Ape Escape. Then Spryo. Then Crash.
    RR Type 4- Great game, but not better than Gran Turismo or Toca. Nor Crash Team Racing, Micro Machines or Wipeout...
    Rayman- Would be in the top 100, well the second one anyway, but should not be here over Crash, Spryo, Ape Escape or Klonoa or Tombi.
    IQ- Or Kurushi as he was called here. Great game, but Kula World and Bust-A-Move were better. Should have replaced this with Parappa the Rapper.
    Wild Arms- Great game. But should have been replaced with Vagrant Story, Breath of Fire, Grandia or Vandal Hearts.

    Super Puzzle Fighter II- Really fun. But wouldn't we rather have a game like Silent Hill?
    Jumping Flash- It was alright for the time... But again how can you not have Wipeout 2097 or 3 on the PlayStation Classic?
    Persona- If you want a grown up again then go with Broken Sword. One of the best games ever made.
    Rainbows 6- WTF is this shit? Without doubt the worst game here. How about give us I dunno Tomb Raider? Even if you want a FPS then you have Medal of Honour, Quake II or Final Doom.

    Seriously looking forward to that Wild Arms review when it comes out, the early PS1 enemy designs alone are surreal, hilarious and terrifying all at once. Especially when you fight a boss that looks human and you're playing as 3 chibi goofballs, one of which has a Rocket Lawncher.

    I remember in the PS1-PS2 era wondering why games that came from Japan seemed to have white characters and the story would often be set in the U.S. I wondered if it was because Asian people were less racist/elitist than Westerners or if people in America/Europe just made up more of the market so they Westernized everything but it still seemed strange. I imagined if every movie that came out in Hollywood was about Asians even though it was produced by white people.

    The Ps1 classic was a huge missed opportunity.
    They could have gotten so many neat and interesting games for each region (at least ones that would be easily playable through language barriers) and a few rare gems from each company and made a fucking _MINT._
    They already just took a public emulator if the rumors are true, not like they couldn't have gotten ISOs for shit like Vagrant Story, The Megaman Legends series (including the misadventures of Tron Bonne), Chrono Cross, Front Mission 3, Soviet Strike and a bunch of others. Just the _presence_ of the game on the PS1 classic would make it worth more.
    Even if they had stuck to first party games, Gran Turismo 1 & 2 and Legend of Dragoon would have drawn some serious attention.

    PS1 Persona 1 has the best music

  • @Arlesmon
    @Arlesmon 5 лет назад +2

    I Disagree about the psp music of persona being better than the psx.
    Sure, the songs themselves are good, but the psx version gave a much darker tone that works better for that game. Considering how it deals with some dark shit and that some characters do get into hard shit. Besides the music on the battles is kick ass.
    As for the game, i like it and it's an interesting take. Though maybe they should've gone for persona 2 inocent sin because some people regards that game to be better than 1 and it handles the topics better.
    But if the music part was a joke, then i disgregard that and i'll suck cocks.

    • @KisekiFox
      @KisekiFox 5 лет назад

      I couldn't stand Persona 1 tbh, it's not really story driven, there aren't any real characters outside of Maki, it felt a lot more like a dungeon crawler with a very thin story tying the locations together, rather than a JRPG with a story and characters that get you to care about them
      The little I've played of Persona 2 (waiting for a fantranslation of the second persona 2 psp game since it has a buncha stuff tying it into the later games in the series apparently) was already a LOT better, characters had real, well, character to them from the offset and I can tell I'm gonna really enjoy myself when I eventually get into playing it.

    • @Arlesmon
      @Arlesmon 5 лет назад

      @@KisekiFox I'll play persona 2 when i finish p1 (i'm at the last dungeon).
      But while i do agree that the game is barebones in the story department it layed some foundation for the rest of the series and I like the concept of how one's imagination could fuck an entire city and part of the plan of kandori.
      But i will look forward to p2 because i did enjoy p1. Even with that obtuse gameplay

    • @thorhighheels

      It wasn't a joke, but I actually changed my mind on it while editing. The PSP version has some BIG stand out tunes imo, but I'd say that the eerie 90s synth vibes of the OG make for a better, and more fitting soundtrack over all.

You know the one where they removed a *huge* chunk of the game and also fundamentally changed the game's writing and setting to try to Americanize it? Was it really that hard to at least *pretend* like the PlayStation Classic wasn't just, "oh hey Nintendo's doing it so I guess we will too?" Lmao

    4:04 literally every game on that list would undoubtedly get hung up with licensing.
    That’s the reason none of them are on the mini.
    And that’s the issue with PS1, despite a lot of PS1 games being “exclusive” (as there really wasn’t a competitor to the PS1 that used comparable hardware at that time) Sony didn’t really own the rights to the games, and a lot of the ones they did own have LONG SINCE been reverted back to the developing studio.
    And that’s why I was apprehensive when the PS-Mini was announced. I knew how good it could possibly be came down to what FINISHED games Sony had the wherewithal to actually purchase.
    Which is why the line up is pretty lackluster
