@Goodness Graces Seems just like Texas with unpredictable weathers. Granted, not the extreme cold, but we have extreme heat and sultry, muggy weather. People do die here from heat exhaustion, because they don't take the weather and what can happen on hot days.

Nigel is my friend .A guy i first met in Chile in 1994 on expwdition with Raliegh international. I met him at his place after his injuries. His coping mechasim is incredible. His insperation to get throguh the rehab was seeing how kids who went through worst injuries just smile through it. Nigel is salt of the earth guy i wil always look up to and pay the highest respect.to him.he is an insperation to many.including myself.
Thank you for sharing that. He really had some horrific injuries but Steve's were the worst!

Climbing is an extremely selfish egotistic "sport". Not only put themselves in danger, they litter the mountain not to mention they ignore their loved ones worrying at home. Leave the damn mountain alone.

@@simonmcgrath4112 a Chinese climber claimed to have come across an Englishman in woollen clothes sitting under a rock below where his ice axe was found. Irvine is the only person it could have been. Seems like near death experiences age your mind 30 years and all of a sudden the joy of simple pains are nothing. Kinda jelly wish I had that everyday appreciation. Maybe thats why they do these things to begin with

In the end, the men higher up were found anyway, so Steve broke his body for nothing. His heart was in the right place, of course, but I know from experience that taking what appears to be a short cut along a hiking route usually leads to a lot of grief. There's good reason why others haven't been going that way.
Steve is crazy, every decision he makes is egotistical not logical.

They're all legends for working together, not breaking into an argument about going to the summit, and staying friends after the whole thing. Definitely one of the more wholesome endings to these.

As someone who has had 8 or 9 bones broken at once, watching that guy try to do anything with broken and shattered bones is stomach churning.
I broke my leg last year and thought the guy in the last episode was bad, this episode made my leg go numb and stomach churn too!!

Most of these rescuers too have a history of mountain climbing..hence the experience.
They are "hooked" too.

From what I have watched from this channel, I think ego and curiosity is something u don't need in life. The two guys who were exploring islands one had never done it before but because of ego he put himself in danger. This one, instead of them following the usual path, ego made them go for the harder route. Ego is the anesthesia that deadens the pain of stupidity. Curiosity too is evident here, trying to see what happens if we do this. Why go for such risky expeditions? In my village we have a saying, the most fierce bull is the first to be tied to the ploughing equipment. The brave ones die first in a battle. Desist from things that u try doing to be seen a hero
Justus you forget my favorite word - variables. Could very well be ego and curiosity that leads people to climb these mountains, but it could also be that they have given up on life and don't care if they live or die, or it could be that they have that daredevil drive inside of them that impels them on, or someone challenged them, or offered them a big reward if they were successful, or other variables that haven't even been thought of. Typical of us humans - we HAVE to attribute a reason to everything that makes sense only to ourselves.
Without ego or curiosity none of man's greatest achievements would have been possible.
Your logic is based on personal survival, but it takes egos, visionaries and brave men to achieve things that make being alive have meaning.

@@Jop3lius When I was living in El Paso Texas I'd go hiking in the desert / mountains a lot. It was insane the number of times I would come across someone way out in the desert dressed in tennis shoes, "active wear", and carrying a single bottle of water. On numerous occasions I've gave people water or pulled a car out of places a car shouldn't be.
they should have turned back when the weather first turned bad. Also, they should have cuddled with Nigel too, he wouldn't have been in such a bad shape then i think.
Yes, all 3 climbers should have cuddled for warmth in the crevasse.... But because of their weird intergroup dynamics, Nigel got left out of the life-saving warmth...

I cry with deep emotion as the helicopter rescues the two lads. And cry in awe of their survival as they though these your men were my kids. What an amazing story of survival .

If you run to the store real quick and you step in mud, are you stupid because you left spare shoes behind? No, you're not, because you didn't expect that things would go that way. It was the last day of the ascent, they were just going to go up and come back down. They were told the weather is all good. In hindsight it looks stupid, but it's also stupid to take more than what you need. If they didn't make it from being weighed down, you'd say "They're stupid, they should've just taken what they needed to go and come back, instead they were weighed down and it cost them"
Might be a good idea to strap your radio to something so it doesn't fall down the mountain and break
I was shocked that they left their mini stove behind and took no food. Traveling light is necessary but they burned up thousands of calories and food and hot liquids might have prevented the worst of their ordeal. They supported each other selflessly and were great friendship personified.
First time seeing the loss of limbs in this series and I was shook!! I am even more impressed by their ability to continue to travel the world and plan for another expedition. The power of the human spirit and thirst for adventure!!

I would say that it´s more like the power of stupidity and selfishness, as these men disregard the effects of their "ill planned and badly prepared adventures" to their families... If they want real adventure, they should come to Latin America - Mexico City or Sao Paulo - big cities - and live on a minimum wage basis... taking super crowded buses, subways, paying a fortune in utilities, seeing the gas prices going up and up and up, and the cost of everything way up there and never enough money to pay for everything.
This is the first one that made me recoil 😭 there’s been a lot of gruesome injuries, but the bone jutting out really is my fear

Don't fly in small aircraft.
And even if you're hiking in less severe conditions always carry WAY more water and food than you think you will need, backup lighter, a form of emergency communication, and always tell someone exactly where you will be and your expected return date.

Nice episode. Those guys definitely have some “manly scars” in my opinion. I ❤️ the mountain climbing episodes. It’s something I would NEVER do BUT I have a lot of love for those that do it. Many have lost their lives exploring mountains. 🙏🏽

While I deeply admire these fellas ...I truly do not understand why you would repeatedly put yourself in danger. Life is hard enough....some things have to be enjoyed and admired as a spectator! The enjoyment is gone once you are dead or severely disabled. For sure... God gave us a spectacular and regal place to live but the Earth is beautiful yet dangerous and it will always win....man is no match!!!

Koby Dallas well...to answer your question plainly, it’s because we love it. It’s our life. The adventure. The adrenaline. The knowing that I may be the only person in the world to ever look at this rock, or this stream, or this waterfall. We don’t set out on adventures to conquer nature. We do it to be apart of it. To be more in tune with it. Sure things can go wrong. Sometimes horribly wrong. I was lost in the woods for two nights and three days alone when I was younger. I wasn’t really scared but mostly upset that I made a navigation mistake. Point being is I still go hunting in the woods, I still go hiking because I love it. :). Some people would much rather stay at home and watch Netflix or RUclips and play video games. And generally not go out of their comfort zone. And that’s perfectly okay. To each their own I say. I hope this answered your question
P.S. these kind of scenarios are very very rare. As long as you use your head, think ahead and plan ahead then 99% of the time youll be fine. Notice that a lot of people in these scenarios make grave errors while planning for their adventure. Eg: not bringing the necessary equipment.
Summit fever 1 minute into the description of the storm I was questioning why are you still going up??!! Summiting is optional returning safe is mandatory, Steve made poor decisions. I don't agree with the narroter though I know of no place on earth in a natural environment where you can freeze to death in seconds...

I always check at the start to see who is being interviewed and then I know who has survived makes it more watchable grim I know but really good viewing 👏👏
When I was 7 years old. My parents and I went ice fishing for the day. It was a beautiful sunny day, but since it was the middle of a Maine winter and we were all bundled up in winter gear (covered head to toe except for our faces) and we hadn't even thought to use any sunscreen.
We had a great day, but that evening after we got home, my parents quickly realized that my face was seriously sunburned. They felt so bad, but at that point, all they could do was slather aloe on my face and assure me that it would be better in the morning, as was always the case with every other sunburn I'd ever had.
The next morning, when I woke up, I remember feeling that my face felt funny and also my vision was kind of blurry. I got out of bed and walked over to the mirror hanging on the back of my bedroom door. My face looked very similar to Nigel's face... discolored and swollen to the point that my eyes were nearly swollen shut. I immediately started crying. I ran out of my bedroom, down the hall and into the living room where my parents were sitting with their morning coffee. My mom gasped when she saw me and dropped her coffee. With tears flowing through the slits of my eyes, I said "Daddy... I thought you said it would be better today." Then I fell to my knees and laid my head on his lap while I cried. He recalls that at that moment he was struggling to hold his own emotions together because he felt so bad.
It was horrible. Which is probably why I've never forgotten it.

They say better ready than sorry no matter the situation. I keep watching these episodes and sent chill in my bones as I have a few close call during hikes on steep mountains and glad it never ended like such chilling accidents.Lesson for this kind of real life experiences is that always bring someone you trust most with your life if you go out the wilderness and always expect for the worst and be prepared,just in case.
This HAS to be top 3 on my list of “things you couldn’t pay me a million dollars to do” 🙅🏼♀️

Was watching this when suddenly rain falls, I don't know but I suddenly felt cold and grab my blanket while watching them frozen. Thank God they all survived. Big respect to these 3 legends.

There’s extremes to any sport. You don’t have to be in danger to climb mountains. There are objectives that are safe and well within the limits of most people.
But like other sports, there will always be people willing to push it to the max
Just offering some perspective. You are at a higher risk of dying every time you are in a motor vehicle. If they show full videos of all real deaths in car, it will be considered an extreme activity. I admire these people and there are more successful expeditions
Naominoz i tell people this all the time. Roughly every 400km you drive a motor vehicle, you expose yourself to a 1 in 1 million chance of a fatal accident. And people do it every day. And people die on the roads every day
@@KevAlberta if you go by hourly basis im pretty sure this kind of expedition is thousands of times more dangerous.
The music that always comes on at the point of rescue always gets me most emotional. Despite knowing they survived, that music still confirms their survival and marks the end of their suffering.

Steve wasn’t exactly depicted as wanting to get help for his friend. He first seemed more concerned with the summit, then his own safety: “*I* might get hypothermic again” as his friend’s face is swollen into unrecognition. .
OMG the guy almost died but he still wanted to keep on climbing!
I’ve never felt the need to risk it all for adventure, my best to those brave souls with this desire

Naomi Uemera died on Denali. That should sum up how dangerous it is. It doesn't matter how good a climber you are. That mountain is in charge.
I just can't understand people that take such risks with their lives..I love adventure too but not to the point of doing something like this..wow!..there's a fine line between fearless/bravery and stupidity..
I don´t know if you watched all seasons of this TV show, but most of the episodes featured MEN in these bizarre situations... women appeared in very few episodes, sometimes with the family in which the husband made the decisions, but the situations depicted in the show usually involved men thinking they can conquer nature - like, how "smart" is that?

I think I watched almost every episode & I doubt I'm doing any of these things but the knowledge gained from a survival stand won't be forgotten I'm sure these would save life's by making sure people are well equipped & extra careful when attempting dangerous activities
One thing I´ve learned from these shows is that do what the natives do - you don´t see Eskimos climbing this mountain, meaning - bad idea! the same thing with Hawaiians and volcanos - they stay away from them, and so should everybody else... Actually, native people of the land only go to places for food and other necessities, nobody sane would risk their lives and think it´s fun... like, why???
Amazing actors and production on these shows. I can't imagine filming all this out in the snow.

Even when I know most or even all of a group survives, I still get tense and thinking "cmon man, don't give up."
I always wonder how these people who goes to expeditions are badly prepared.
Yep! but lets leave our supplies and gear below and climb up to the summit with nothing! lets also bring just ONE radio so if anything happens to it or the battery, we dont have a spare and we're fucked!
@@HobbyOrganist unfortunately thats not how it works. You have to look at good weather periods and make absolute use of it. You cant carry all the weight and make it up and down to camp within those hours. So they are forced to leave the load. I can agree about the radio though.
Victorian Sculptures you must not have done any climbing as this is how it’s done you can’t take to much weight with you or you will never make it to the peak of your climb it’s only the bare essentials that are to be taken. The radio and batteries that’s a big stuff up.
I admire Amundsen who was the Norwegian explorer who made it first to the South Pole in the early 1900's. He and his team went well prepared.

Mountain climbers are always just one wrong event away from dying. This is why you see so many mountaineering survival stories compared to other types of survival stories. If you live for this type of activity then you need to be completely prepared to die for it because at any moment, you might.
We know. It’s better to die after living than die after existing, and for some of us, mountains are in our blood.
@@mamavswild well everyone has the right to pursue whatever makes them happy or gives them a sense of fulfillment. I used to be someone who took a lot of very serious risks in my life, including free solo rock climbing and I truly believe I shouldn't even be alive today but somehow I am. Now I have a family and thus other priorities and responsibilities other than my self interests. But then again, most people always have someone who loves them and would be seriously hurt by our demise. I think the idea that you have to put yourself at risk in order to feel alive is actually true for some of us but it is just part of our flawed and imperfect human mentality and reasoning. Today I know for certain that you really do not NEED to put your life at unnecessarily high risk in order to feel a sense of happiness about yourself and your life. You will feel more alive... if you are ACTUALLY alive, at least as long as you're living free and still find a sense of purpose. I cannot judge other people because I have been down that path, but I can be honest about the unnecessary and erroneous nature of taking that path. Still, I'm sure you will continue to do what makes you happy and I hope fortune will favor you so you won't ever have any negative issues out on the mountains. In the end we all have to die, and maybe there is a bit of comfort perhaps, in dying doing something you love. But for me, those days are over.
Jamal69 Jackson I completely understand; and thank for a very well thought out reply and for not just being a ‘RUclips jerk’. Everyone goes through epochs in my life- I certainly am right now, as my children enter their teens and two out of three are having issues I hoped against hope that MY kids would never have. I was in the army for a loooong time, but when children came, I put away my M-4 and hung up my boots and exchanged them for heels so that I could raise them and BE there for them...I also was FAR more careful in the great outdoors, while still instilling in my children a love of adventure and going on backpacking trips (I’m carefully selected!) paths. Soon, in about 4 years, my crampons will come back on. In the meantime I stay fit with half-marathons. I cannot wait to feel the granite beneath my fingertips again!! So I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about.

@@mamavswild Well that all being said, thank you for your service. I also in the Army for 14 years... just another footnote on my past dangerous life, at least during the deployments. Anyhow, I hope whatever issues your children's might be having will resolve. It is unfortunate that our children sometimes have to test their own paths and make some choices that are not in their best interest in spite of our best efforts to guide them down a more favorable path. In the end, we all choose our ways and reap the consequences, whether good or bad. I'm a single father and with my kids growing up so fast, it is a challenge to try to keep them headed down a good path in life. As parents we can really only do so much and we can only do the best we can. By the way, I'm glad that you keep in shape. I have so many Army and military buddies in general that have really let themselves get way out of shape. They forgot how to exercise but never forgot how to drink beer. Anyhow, I also do what you do, I've tried to instill a love of nature, adventure and the outdoors on my kids, but I also try to teach them about safety, planning, awareness, etc... just in case. It sure was a good chat, likewise take care of yourself!
I love the courage, drive and drama of the lives they lead. Lucky they had helicopter rescue, Even Tom Crean's solo walk could not walk them out of this one.
No fire when it's freezing cold, that was the biggest risk they took, then descending down a different route, not an accident, just too many risks.

The snowy mountain climbs episodes seem to be the most Brutal episodes of this series. I believe these type result in the most deaths on the series, and most body damage with limbs and parts needing to be amputated. I have said, I don’t see why people do this when you can get a better thrill from doing something safer. However now I will just say, they can do whatever they want, but honestly they need to be prepared for the worst. I have seen episodes where people have been prepared and still lost life and limbs
The problem is not climbing, the problem is lack of training. If you want to climb a mountain, better learn it from experts before doing it, learn survival skills during harsh circumstances and only then go to perform such daring tasks. People hardly take any training and start climbing mountains or starts sailing the sea, and then get into troubles with no survival skills and then such shows are made.

Seeing each individual then each of their faces pop up in the interviews is a huge relief right from the start

I did 4 days survival training in Norway , The view was spectacular but very cold , after 4 days I returned to camp and collapsed in the hot shower , Its only a spec of what these guys endured and would I do it again ? never in my life time , I was forced to do it as my military training not for enjoyment ,
Spoken like a true smart man^^ 👏👏👏. I just don't understand why people would keep going back to situations and places that almost killed them as part of their free time and enjoyment. I would not enjoy dying on a snowing mountainside. Nope. Not a jungle. Not the ocean. Not a river. I like land, and I like knowing I won't be dying as a result of my own poor decision making. Granted we have no control over what may happen to us (random accidents, or perhaps illnesses), but I mean... why poke the bear? There is no need to mess with nature. It's not going to end well.
