Dude that helicopter pilot crash landing, using his critical skills to get the radio working & enduring smoke until he blacked out… bro. & then homie doing the craziest free solo up & over the lip. & the dude that stayed 2 nights & didn’t give up… what a group of survivors. That is the most intense thing to come out of.
Things like this only happens in movie but wow these are real stories
Unreal they all survived!! Amazing!!
The pilot is a hero.
Yeah man this one is badass. Most of these stories are of woefully unprepared, reckless, and frankly stupid individuals that go on hikes that are way out of their competency and skill level. They ignore warnings from experts, park rangers, etc about dangerous conditions and the like, encounter some difficulty and then ignore all the red flags and warning signs but continue on anyway. Then they find themselves in a terrible situation in need of rescue and still manage to make mistakes and the situation worse. It's still tragic and sad and I pray for their families, but most of these stories are 1000% preventable and involve these types of people who are reckless, unprepared and just irresponsible for their own safety.
This case is so different. Like you said the fact that this helicopter pilot was such a badass that he not only landed the helicopter safely, but had the fucking balls and physical prowess to overcome the suffocating noxious gasses and make it back to the helicopter. Then this absolute alpha chad fucking McGuyvers the broken radio system in his helicopter with a camera battery, makes a mayday distress call, runs back to alert his friends and keep them from putting themselves in danger, goes back for oxygen, then goes BACK to the helicopter to radio again. It's just so god damn impressive. Meanwhile, the ground rescue crew that was probably equipped with SCBAs and other PPE within shouting distance of the pilot who is about to die abandon him and retreat. Like what the fuck man what are you doing? Seriously this guy is out there somehow surviving and not only that but physically exerting himself and doing all this amazing work to help save his companions, choking in toxic fumes, expending what precious little energy he has left, and the rescue member has the audacity to tell him to come to them??? Like dude I understand, but as a rescue member that's your job and responsibility AND you have all the equipment to protect you and help these poor people. Shame on them bruh that's some bullshit I would've been pissed.

Probably on their side. That's how I sleep. Maybe on their back though. I know some people sleep on their stomach but probably on their side. Is my guess 🤷🏻♂️
love how little karens come to the rescue in the comment section only. you think you can do this mission at night? go ahead karen. do not forget to bring your cabbage soup while you climb down a vulcano at night with poisonous fumes and smoke that reduces the visibility to almost zero, while one misstep will mean you fall into the lava or crush your bones during the fall. but of course these evil rescuers lightheartedly decided to abandon the mission because they just do not care as much as little vicky who provides us with oh so important cabbage soup recipes. thanks vicky for your valuable insights into the work of rescue teams worldwide, who are only in it for the money and not to save peoples lifes. these people try all day to get them out as much as they can and sleep at night so they have the energy to try again next day. probably a better bet than staying up all night and being completely out of breath the next day. in the end they managed to save all of these people. i think that is a very commendable result, probably worth more than your cabbage soup. thanks for your valuable couch potatoe expertise on the topic though vicky. cya.

@@flyingchimp12 I'm thinking it might have been a more volunteer based group because of the lack of attempts and supplies. The poor man stuck in the volcano 🌋 😢 for THREE NIGHTS. Absolutely insane they all survived especially the man who was stuck for 3 days breathing in very toxic fumes.
I lived in the east rift zone in the 2019 eruption near Sea View. It started with a 5.9 earthquake and moments later the lava started surfacing.. the toxic gas was just as real as the lava.. In the end my house was taken. Managed to save all my animals and lived in a tent by Pahoa Village community center. It was rough . Life goes on..🙌
So glad you and yours survived.
He was lucky his employers appreciate their employees and had the means to try their own rescue
These men were incredibly smart. That's nice to see on this show 😁 Glad they all survived.
Yes @Kristen Cooper and to be noted all three men were in top physical condition. If they had not been it would have been such a different story.
They were stupid. The amount of gasses coming out will stop most engines from running because they count on the oxygen in the air. When you take that away by doing a low pass over a HEAVILY gassed area = the jet engine will shut down because it has no oxygen to burn with the fuel. So either stay outside of the danger zone (like don't get too close or do a low pass) OR design a helicopter (better with a piston engine then jet engine) that has onboard oxygen for the engine that can be enabled for 'low passes' for a few seconds (which it can be done, but I'm not aware anyone doing it). End of the day: Pilot was stupid and shouldn't of accepted that route. However, I will say in the pilot's defense they are often new pilots flying who does flying like this (to build up their flight hours to get better flying jobs) so he likely wasn't experienced (but end of the day not knowing fire needs oxygen to burn is like 5th grade level stuff and not related to flying) and he didn't know that.
@@JohnAdams-qc2juI agree stupid decision to fly into this, but still incredibly smart and intuitive to rewire the radio and call for help between losing consciousness. Simplest of things are the hardest for this guy/don’t fly in a volcano, hardest most difficult easy…

That "ground rescue team" was *literally* useless.

The actors of this episode were awesome.
I'm pretty amazed at how realistic everything seems (except the lack of coughing).

All the actors are great in these videos
love how after the ground rescue lowered the rope three times they were like: „Ok, thats enough work for today lets go for a beer“

Wow that ground team sure are a bunch of twinkle toes!! Wtf! "Ya its 5:00pm time to punch out guys. Sorry wel see you in the morning tho. Just hang tight until then ok guys." Next day "hey you lived! Wow ok well grab this rope. Aahhwww shit its raining Bob. I didnt bring the proper rain attire for this situation. We could catch a cold!!! Hell no we gotta go home guys tell them wel be back when its nicer outside, maybe." Thats insane thats not a rescue team geez!!
I don't blame them for being kinda lack luster as a rescue team, but..
I just can't help but feel there were possibly dozens of options they could come up with.
For example:
a) in a period of what? 2 days.. they couldn't call for backup, maybe get 1 or 2 other governments to help or something.
b) what about a drone, what about thermal imaging to find the poor man, (obviously the lava pools would show up too, but i think you would still see his silhouette vs the rocky cliff.
Also, couldn't the drones bring him supplies?
c) tunneling device?.. maybe this is my worst idea, expensive, and other problems, but it still could work.
d) also.. why did he need to hire his own team to do something they should have already tried? But, anyway, back to not blaming the rescue team. I just appreciate anyone who is trying to rescue them, even if they suck a bit.
e) what about hiring a world class rock climber, and give him some great tools. There is no doubt in my mind that he could create anchor points in the cliff wall. Go down a few meters.. use some fancy gear to dig a quick hole, use a device that expands in the hole.. and boom, you have a solid anchor. They could give him great breathing gear, but those guys are used to being in low oxygen environments anyway
f) how about a helicopter, with 200 feet of rope, and a video transmission device with thermal camera to guide the pilot.
It’s honestly embarrassing that the film company had to hire people to rescue the dude because the emergency rescue team was that useless
MEGA
bruh I was thinking the same
@@willho4202 my thoughts also. The rescue team could have had done so much more.
I’d be beyond happy to have just one friend as true as Don.
And what the hell kind of “extreme weather conditions” would make the rescue team on foot have to retreat so many times? A hurricane? Tornado? What could possibly be so terrible weather-wise that they throw a rope three times and then say “to hell with it”?
Right. A survivor could climb up the side of the crater without equipment, but a rescue effort of more than three rope tosses is too much?
extreme putrid, blinding smoke, I understand the frustration, but I know I would do everything I could, so I'm sure they did too
I used to work as a volcanologist. Volcanoes create their own weather conditions and they're always changing. Helicopters face all kinds of difficulties. We'd often get dropped off by helicopter but have to walk out because it was too dangerous for the helicopter to return. I was amazed a rescue team even got to the rim in those conditions. It's remote and it's not like they had a paid rescue team on stand by just waiting to assist. So kudos for the guys who at least tried.

But your radio was working I assume?
Oh so funny!! Guess we are all survivors then lol.
Respect to Don. He didn't event want to be recognized. I really wanted to see his face, a hero's face. He risked himself to save his fellow helicopter pilot. Craig is also a hero. He's that typical old school gentleman who is responsible, has a genuine caring heart, always very stoic and skilful. Reminds me of my late father.
Of course the weather conditions were bad and of course it was dangerous, it's a volcano. But the men had survived in the midst of the toxic smoke for a long time, that should be enough proof that they shouldn't give up trying to help. They could see that the men were alive and had survived for that long. The "rescue team", who had oxygen equipment, could have tried harder for longer. It's a travesty that in the end their own film company hired a helicopter with the right pilot who solved it on their first trip out. They would have died if the company didn't sort it themselves.
I really think the rescuers could have done more, especially in the morning of the second day. I get, that it was hard to get to the crater rim because of the gases, but these two just survived a whole night in there, not to mention the rescuers should have acces to oxygen masks. So in my opinion there was no excuse not to go to the rim, look where they are and throwing them the rope. Would have been half an hour max and both of them out and well.
Typical Hollywood fat-cats with more money than sense: barrel into a place with zero respect, endanger lives, cost the state a bundle and leave a wreck---then don't bother to use the fn footage.
Agreed
Honestly I agree with this they could have tried a little harder hell mike even spent two nights there
Disagree, just remember emergency services are not required to risk there own lives. There is an inherit risk for the job, but this exceeds normal expectations. Rescuers probably only ever got people from mountains or the water before and not a volcano. Plus risk analysis is huge in any decision process-> “should we risk it for a dead body? He might not of made the second night.”
There's very little rescue resources in Hawaii but yes it's a poor response time

@boomschool okay so go bother someone else with your pointless comments
Heck, it's simply amazing that they survived the initial helicopter crash into a rocky volcano! That guy saying that he felt protected inside the steel enclosure of a flying helicopter obviously doesn't know much about the realities of helicopters. I spent years in the military flying (being flown) in helicopters and I knew any one of those times could be the day we crashed or got shot down, and at those combat speeds we were flying I never thought I'd walk away from it if it happened. It almost seems as if we lost more US troops to helicopter crashes than combat, especially Chinook helicopters, it seems they went down more frequently than one would expect. This guy was either lucky, one hell of a pilot or both! That guy Don had more balls and courage than those cowardly ground rescuers who left the pilot hanging. Both of these pilots are true, amazing heroes!
Lost more to helicopter crashes? What are you talking about? I can find a total of 4 Chinook crashes. EVER.
@@SpicyTexan64 first of all, my comment is meant to be an obvious exaggeration... you should work on your intuition and learn to read a little better between the lines. Secondly, you say you only found information about 4 Chinook helicopter crashes "EVER". Wow! You really also need to work on your statistics research. Now, I certainly don't know how many Chinooks have gone down since the introduction of the Chinook in the 1960's, but it's definitely more than four lol. Just simply the number of Chinooks that crashed for reasons other than being shot down in Afghanistan since 2001 is more than double the number you came up with.

It’s amazing he was able to lay on that helicopter inside there safely
Imagine nearly dying for the sake of a crappy Hollywood movie.
Could I please have a knot or something to hold onto on that rope? That wet, slippery. narrow nylon rope?
Rescue-Team: Stay safe, we will be back for ye in the morning!
Me: *checks time* It's a no from me. /xfactorjudges
This is one of my favorite stories 🙌 Truly amazing that these beautiful men survived this horrific event. God bless each of them ♥️🙏 So beyond grateful they’re still here with us. Thank you for sharing this story as it surely reminded me life isn’t so bad after all and to keep fighting no matter what! 💪 I will remember this story months from now 🥰
I would rather die from hyperthermia inside a volcano than be caught in the mist of a volcano eruption and literally melt to death!!!🤪
That's basically what hyperthermia is... your body is way too hot and is being cooked inside. Thank goodness it didn't erupt.
How lucky was the final guy to be rescued, if he hadnt jumped far enough ? ........
Or if the net had been lifted again at that point!!
Ten ratowany facet zaryzykował, teraz albo nigdy i jednym susem wskoczył do kosza ratunkowego.
I know right? Wow
Thank you for uploading an episode I haven't seen before!
This was part of a story I found on Google
Authorities said the three-day, two-night rescue mission, estimated to have cost tens of thousands of dollars, may have been the most expensive rescue ever launched on Hawaii Island, the state’s ″Big Island.″ They were looking into whether Paramount could be made to pay the bill.
That ground let's poke around team was incredible, Mission accomplished!!! great job boys.
How about making a movie about these 3 movie maker's accident. I think it will be an interesting movie.

The movie they were filming for got an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes
Pffft! 😂🤦🏻♀️🤫

That moment when they threw cage rope and all they find is 3 heavy stones 😂😂😂😒
Make story exciting who put stones inside... probably mike
They might was getting paid for that but it wasn't worth their life, they knew before they went it would be dangerous. They are blessed to still be alive.
By far one of the most exciting thrillers I have ever seen. Likening to fly in my younger years and using a camera or video to record .. I get his comments about a2nd or 3rd take. Ya gotta know when to say NO. AMEN
like when I was a teen gymnastic and was doing too many backflips, and I kept saying just 10 more, just 9 more, and on just 1 more I injured my back. Now at 40, with a career in teaching, zoology and dreams of analysing animal behaviour, I have succumbed to severe chronic back pain, with prolapsed disc and sciatica last 5 years. I feel disabled and like my dreams & career are all over. KNOW WHEN TO SAY NOOOOOO!!!
Those 2 filmers are SO LUCKY they had Mcguiver as their helicopter pilot.
And they didn't even use the footage in the movie. XD
That’s so darn annoying
Causally filming a movie 🎥🎥🎥 !! Than bam you become the movie 😢😢😢 !! What an absolute nightmare 😦
that rescue team , jeez , dont try too hard will ya
The rescue crew went back to get another bottle of gin....
The stubbornness and blindness of man... literally went to the brink of hell.... never repented, never gave their life to Jesus or so much as flipped him a crumb of gratitude for giving them mercy , though they played with sacrifices to a false god
they aren't christian
Imagine bringing Jesus in this. You all act like sect people
God giveth and God can taketh it away. Very few Thank God for their life. Its all ask ask ask, beg beg beg but, then 'eaten bread is soon forgotten' . Imagine that crater further down IS HELL.
The lazy part gave me so much anxiety, where he jumped in to the net, that was too risky, what if he missed😭😭I'm sick now of what ifs
