FREEZING Solo Winter Wild Camp On The West Pennine Moors in the Hilleberg Soulo

- The Solo Summiteer - headed out from home for a local solo winter wild camp in my Hilleberg Soulo tent on Turton Moor between Darwen and Bolton, in Lancashire. A cold day and a snowy and windy night in my Hilleberg Soulo tent. Used my Exped Downmat 9 sleeping mat and Alpkit Pipedream 400 sleeping bag. A great combination in cold conditions. It was the first time I'd used the Ocoopa handwarmer on a camp and enjoyed the bit of luxury it offered on a cold winters night. I also took time to check out some historical features in the area associated with a disused coal mine dating back to the 1850’s.

Love. The. Caves. Around. There.🐦
Where are the caves Joseph?
I think if there was a competition for 'best tent loser of stuff' then I'd win hands down. I wild-camped on Saturday in the coldest conditions I've faced and I was actually getting annoyed with myself at my inner tent chaos! Nice to see the old ruins too. I like stuff like that. ATB, Chris
haha. Crazy isn’t it Chris. I put it down to my age 😁. Appreciate your comments. Stay safe and ATB - Dave
brilliant adventure really enjoyed watching this
Cheers Stuart. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
As always David a really enjoyable, interesting and informative video. I very nearly cracked out laughing when I saw your Christmas tree. I've started to get out again myself now. Something which 12 months ago I thought would never happen. The gear available now compared to when I started back in the 70s is incredible. Hand warmers, slippers, lightweight stools etc. All luxuries which we never dreamt of back then. I'm seriously toying with the idea of getting a Soulo. The more I see it in action the more impressed I get.
I'm not suprised in the least you've got so many subscribers in such a short space of time. You deserve it because of the care you take to make your videos so enjoyable. Keep them coming!
Thank you Frederick, really appreciate your kind words 🙏🏻. I just managed to squeeze the tree into my rucksack 😁. Good luck getting out there - stay safe
Great to have this so close to home mate , looked a great night and nice taste of winter to test the cold weather gear out . atb Dave
Cheers Dave👍. Always good to get out. You always learn something, be it about your kit, your environment, or yourself. Hoping we can get back into the mountains before much longer 🤞Stay safe - Dave
Many thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this video you might like to check out another of my wild camps in this area - ruclips.net/video/tY17iox1A5w/видео.html
What a difference a day makes, eh...
Great video! Loved the history with this. We've a plethora of old mines and associated workings where I am in Swaledale, and I love exploring them when hiking.
Great adventure Dave,I nearly fell of my chair when that bird flew off , really enjoy your episodes stay safe Jim
Haha. Cheers Jim. It did make me jump for a minute 😳😁. ATB - Dave
Brilliant video Dave, I need to get out that way and explore those ruins.
Thank you Simon. Really appreciate that. 😎👍

Wonderful windy overnighter! Winter is one of my favorite times of year. Thanks for sharing! :) :)
Thank you Jacqueline. Much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed it 😎👍 Dave
Nice to be able to walk out the door for a night out Dave and you're not the only one who has stuff randomly disappear in their shelter.
Thanks John 😎👍. The way stuff just disappears is crazy 🤷♂️
Great video, so funny the pheasant flew out!!
Haha😁. Nice one. Many thanks 😎👍. Did you jump too 😁
How cool that you took your Christmas tree along:) Thanks for the enjoyable video.
Haha. Thank you and glad you enjoyed it 😎👍🎄
What a great video. Thank you again.
Many thanks Simon 😎👍
Splendid and inspirational! An overnighter every month. I put that in my calender.
Big thanks Morton 😎👍
Nicely done sir.

Nice one J👍. Many thanks and glad you enjoyed it 😎👍. Stay safe - Dave
I have the same tent ,just noticed you had your poles on the out side of your rucksack, great idea
had to laugh when that pheasant took off Dave, you're reaction was class lol..iv'e had that happen more times than enough they frighten the crap out of you don't they..there's so much history up on the moor's & related area's i too love to find out some history behind this stuff & it would be fascinating to see these places back when they were in their prime..was great to be out in the first snow of winter mate it was same night i was up bleaklow & it tonked it down..16 hours in the tent done that a few times & you certainly have to enjoy you're own company lol..hopefully we can get back to the mountains before long mate..tfs Dave..Andy.
Haha. Bloody bird 🦅 😳😁. Although not able to get to the mountains I’ve really enjoyed checking out the local locations and their history. Yeah, 16hrs in a tent can mess with your mind at first. Especially on top of a mountain in bad weather. Thanks for your comments Andy. Looking forward to seeing you out again soon - ATB Dave
New sub ......really enjoyed your vid. I love camping vids . Thanks so much xxx
Big thanks Mandy. Glad you enjoyed it 😎👍
Recently picking up on your videos. All fantastic so far. The tree is ace 🤣
Big thanks. Glad you enjoyed it 🌲 😁⛺️
well done mate, I thought the Christmas tree light was a nice touch. Enjoyed the video very much especially
as I was in my warm room. Take care stay safe. H
Haha. Many thanks Hugh😎👍. It was a cold one. Best enjoyed with a brew by the fire 😎
Lovely video, thank you. You must have been so pleased to be able to be able to camp out in the hills again. It was certainly wild and windy. Like you, we’ve been doing a bit of bogtrotting last week; it can take ages to cover what seems such a short distance as the crow flies, with the to-ing and fro-ing around the pools and mires. All good fun! The industrial archaeology aspect of your video was very interesting, thank you for the information.
Thank you Lily👍. Yeah, the bog trotting is much more tiring than normal walking. I do find the local moorland history really interesting. Glad you enjoyed it - stay safe, Dave
Great video Dave. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks again Graham 👍
Wow you were quick catching the first white stuff. Good effort and excellent vid. Cheers buddy.
Nice one Dave. Much appreciated 👍
You are such a brave man!
Haha. Not really. But thank you 🙏🏻 And thanks for watching - ATB Dave
So laid back and cool 😎 a pleasure to watch you
Haha. Many thanks alan 😎👍
Watched this after the Great Hill bivi - you have a knack for attracting overnight snow ! I haven't been to the West Pennines for ages ( not this century ) but you've got me digging out my old OS maps. Fine video, good music selection in the right places.
Many thanks Gordon🙏🏻. Can’t believe that was nearly a year ago. Glad you enjoyed it 😎👍
Another great video Dave... Get well soon fella.. ATB Kenny ;-)
Cheers Kenny😎👍. Stay safe - Dave
Excellent, really enjoyable. thanks
Thank you Jeremy. Much appreciated 😎👍. Dave
Hi Dave,
i just watched all your videos over the past 3 nights very inspiring, Really loved watching them, Keep up the good work
Many thanks CC. Really appreciate that 👍 - ATB Dave
Great film, I'm glad you were able to get out at last. The mine shafts were a really atmospheric addition to the beautiful landscape, and the snow is always a welcome accessory to any wild camp film.
Thank you Mike. Really appreciate that 1 stay safe - Dave
Great job mate! The snow definitely arrived anyway. Hand warmer looked a good job but the mug looked even better🙌🏻.
I like the summit to eat fajita and rice. Had one on the last camp and it was unbelievable.
Big thanks SK👍. Glad you liked my tree, and the mug 😎. Hand warmer was a touch of luxury and very welcome 🙏🏻. Will have to give your meals a try 👍. ATB - Dave
Looked a great camp that mate..👌🏽 I’ve always said I’d much rather go back in time than forward....
And no.... you’re not the only one who has stuff go missing in the tent 🙈😀
Haha😁Nice one 😎👍. Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
I was born and grew up on the saddle worth moor Left for Canada for 34 yrs. but back in my old stomping grounds again. Nothing compares to home. Winter here is far better than over there. It’s like the Antarctic over there. Not fit for man or beast in winter (5-6 months long). Nice video 👍🏻
That’s fantastic peter👍. I think those of us that grew up by the moors can appreciate their bleakness as something to be enjoyed. There’s no place like home 😁. Glad you enjoyed it and many thanks for watching. ATB - Dave
The Solo Summiteer yep 👍🏻 100%. I try to get over to Crowden or saddle worth moor once a week for sanity. Get away from everything and everyone.Just a small hike and relax time (brew up and such). Keep doing what you love to do. Keep the body moving is good too.
Sounds like you’ve got it pretty much worked out peter 👍. We all need our escape to keep us sane. And to keep moving. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. Stay safe 👍
Good little video mate, interesting !
Firepot are a great eat, for dehydrated but they are all probably similar. Great vid, id love a Soulo
Big thanks free 😎👍. Will check out those meals 👍
The Pennines are such an underrated place for wild camping. I'm just over the border from you in Halifax and I love hiking and camping in the Pennines. It's not quite Lake District but it's definitely a beautiful and sometimes unforgiving place!
Absolutely Gaz. There’s a real beauty in it bleakness. Not to be underestimate in poor conditions either 👍
Great to see the fresh content Dave and also great to see you once again in Trail magazine in the Mountain Photo comp, great photo of your March camp in Mickledore, all the best and keep up the great content, us guys indoors at the minute appreciate seeing whats out there
Really appreciate that jon 😎👍. I know my pic ain’t the best but I’m pleased to have gotten to the final with a phone pic. Can’t wait to get back to the mountains - ATB Dave
Really enjoyed the video
Thank you Julie 😎👍
Great vid Dave, you’re the first one with a Christmas tree on a wild camp that I’ve seen. Serious case of grouse surprise here👍👍
Nice one Dave. Just managed to squeeze the tree into my rucksack 😁. Aye, pheasant woke me up 😳
Another great video and good you for you keeping up the wild camp target. Enjoyed seeing the the Soulo out again (def' A little envious) and all very festive with the little Christmas tree and even some snow to boot.
Your reaction was brilliant when the pheasant gave lift off, it is quite startling when that happens. Years ago just I was topping out a wee climb on a local crag when I placed my hand virtually on top of a buzzard, I think it may have been sleeping but obviously it woke with a startled fright and took off just inches above my head. Maybe I laughed later but at the time I nearly keeked it.
ATB stay safe and a Merry Christmas to you.
Haha. Many thanks Stuart 😎👍. Merry Christmas 🎄
Thanks seeing u in the snow quite cheered me up lol - merry xmas cheers Rob
Nice one Rob👍. Me too. Many thanks for watching - ATB Dave
I really enjoyed that Dave, I'll watch some more now, I've just subbed to I'll look forward to watching more, atb Adam 👍
That’s froogin’ nuts!
Superb video
Nice one Dominic 😎👍
That was a great tent ⛺; and loved the coziness inside while it was snowing 🌨 and strong winds were flowing outside. The mini-stove looked so perfect when it was windy storm going on outside, and you inside the close-spaces of your beautiful comfy tent using it to boil the water; great utility and comfort-compactness. 🌾 Hand-warmer, was so beautiful for such places, another great piece on your adventure snowy night out in the wilderness. And I could sense how difficult it would have been to pack up the whole thing next day as opposed to setting it up the previous day. Loved the beautiful music 🎶 you used for returning back. That was a lovely video. 🎄✨🔥🎉
Thank you so much for your kind words Amit 🙏🏻. Really appreciate your support - ATB Dave
Nice one Dave 😎😎 looked a bit chilly mind 😂😂 it’s amazing how often we lose kit in the tent and sleeping bag 😂😂 I’m out next week in the lakes, can’t wait. Thanks for sharing and keep em coming mate. Atb. Tony
Thanks Tony. Much appreciated 😎👍
Hey hope you're well? I just wanna say great video, but what I like most is that you give details on what you're using, wearing and even eating. The information is important and hardly anyone seems to let us viewers know what kit n food they use. We find it important, at least I do. Don't think if you say it in every video you feel as though you're repeating yourself, it good information to know 👍
Much appreciated Richard 🙏🏻
Great video. Great filming. Keep it up
Thank you very much christian 😎👍!
A lot of the ruins you see on the moor tops are quite often to do with the shepards they often built little buildings for shelter for the sheep in winter and little yards to get the sheep rounded up into to check them over for like shearing or trimming there feet etc, also mining went on up there too as you were saying, very interesting up there all the history!!!👍🏻🤘🏻🙏🏻🇬🇧😊😊
Cheers Ian 😎👍
HELLO. FROM. DALLAS. TEXAS.
Great video - new subscriber, keep them coming. Hopefully more snow (and less lockdowns!) over the coming months. Best wishes.
Many thanks Alistair, much appreciated 😎👍. More snow, less lockdown. Yes please 🙏🏻. ATB - Dave
Cheers Dave, great video. I spotted a bit of kit and gona get it sorted now out the shed. A piece of correx board to use as a table. Well done for getting out, I did fancy a local one but found other things to do. If you dont mind I shall recall waking in snow that you have reminded me of.
It was 79 and I was cycling to Morocco on an old bike with no gears and my tent was a small scout canvas type with no ground sheet. I was cycling up into Andorra and camped at the side of the main road and when I woke in the morning the tent was swamped by all the snow. Very exciting, never forget it.
Thanks Dave.👍
Many thanks Dave😎👍. Love your story. Exciting stuff indeed and great memories 👍. Love my lightweight table. All you need 😜
Great video! Caine from Emmerdales big brother making it look easy and really interesting, loved the history stuff too, thank you sir
Haha😁. Nice one EG glad you enjoyed it😎👍 - ATB Dave
Excellent video, nicely done! What a beautiful snowy scenery it was. Just found your channel and subbed👍

Many thanks. It was. Just a bit 🥶😁

Good fortitude, you'll appreciate being locked down in a warm dry house even more.
Sure do, Guide 👍😎
Summit to eat beef stew is the best dehydrated meal iv tried. Very filling and tasty 👍
Thanks Paul. I’ll have a look out for that 👍
Thanks Dave for a cracking vid and great adventure. Greetings from a Padiham lad (although I've been living in Derby for 31 years) and fellow solo wild camper. I bought a decent stainless steel 5 shelf dehydrator and cheap vacuum packer off ebay earlier this year and so far have made about 30 meals. Standard stuff like chilli, chicken curry, spaghetti bolognaise etc which overall have been great and work out about £2 per meal all in for a big 1000 calorie portion. Shared them with my mates with no complaints at all. Once rehydrated, the mince can have a slightly dry texture(our USA friends call it gravel) and pasta can be a bit chewy, but absoluely fine overall especially with a wee dram, when camped on top of a freezing scottish mountain.😂. As per the commercial, I just add boiling water to the bag, put the meal in a home made relectix cosy and wait about 20 mins. The food is pre-cooked and left in the fridge overnight before dehydating and vacuum packing. Wrapping each portion with kitchen towel to avoid punctures when vacuum packing, , then store them in the freezer. You might want to check this approach out if you are camping a lot? Much cheaper and more flexible after the initial kit outlay which set me back around £130. Loads of instructional vids on youtube. Prior to that I was buying ' Expedition Foods' dehydated meals which are good but a bit pricy.
@@jc609 wow Julian, you’re a bit of a Jamie Oliver, it seems 😜. I don’t get out as much as I’d like so don’t mind paying for the meals. If I was going out more regularly it would probably be worth it tho 👍
My attempts at cooking are definitely not gourmet😂! Just started to watch your channel. Fabulous stuff. Thanks and stay safe.
You can't beat a bit of tuffety's, think I shall do a vid on the moors soon - nice phesant lol
haha😁. Cheers EH 👍
Nice one mate, looked a decent one that.
Looking forward to getting out myself this week. 👍🏻
Cheers Scott👍. Really enjoyed that one. Good luck getting out next week 🤞😎
@@TheSoloSummiteer 👍🏻
Great adventure. When the snow started would have been a good time to have a live stream.
Cheers Im. Glad you enjoyed it 😎👍. Never thought of a live stream.
Thanks Dave I enjoyed watching the mouch around the colliery some interesting local history there. Ive subbed ya so going to have a look aty some of ya other stuff as well.
Hi Tony. Really appreciate that and thank you👍. Feel free to check out my other videos. Hope you enjoy them too. ATB - Dave
Great vid
good!!!!!😄
Just found your channel, and wanting to watch videos on adventures for winter. Looking for what to expect on my adventures in the Peak, Lake district areas. I have the Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1, exped mat R8 rating and Thermarest -18c sleeping bag. Looking to get the Rab Resolution Jacket! Can't wait for a good snowy adventure. Great video, liked and Subscribed.
Big thanks for the sub 🙏🏻. Glad you’re enjoying my videos. ATB 👍
Superb mate, cold night I bet.
Cheers David😎🙏🏻. Aye, was a cold one indeed 🥶👍
Nice Trip, Love it 👍
Nice one Zak. Many thanks 😎👍
Another cracking video Dave. Would have loved to get out in the snow myself, but that’s life for you.
Those Soulo’s are the worlds most untidy tent ⛺️ your right, how can you lose so much stuff in a tent so small.
I’ll never be one to make a video, but really enjoyed sharing your adventures. Thank you 👍
Thanks Shane, much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed it 😎👍
Quality video mate and the Christmas tree priceless.
Many thanks OD👍. Yeah, just managed to squeeze the tree into my rucksack 😁
You where brave being up there Dave sooner you than me going to have a look on west pennine is map about the mine shaft and have a google see what else I can find out about it plus another great video 👍
Cheers Pete. Was a cold one 🥶. Lots of interesting history up there 👍
Great video Dave. Just bought the other half one of the Ocoopa hand Warners. Hope they’re decent.
Many thanks Richard 😎👍. I’d definitely recommend the hand warmer. Great little device and a power bank too 👍 Thanks for watching and ATB - Dave
another good one Dave, am out tomorrow in swaledale, looking forward to it.
Thanks Geo😎👍. Dales will be stunning right now. Enjoy 😎
Nice one mate, good to get back out eh. I'm out tomorrow night in the Scottish borders ...(just subbed)..cheers Stevie
Cheers Stevie. Good luck and enjoy 😎👍
Brilliant video 👍
Thank you 😎👍
Superb again mate 🤝
Many thanks Iain 👍
nice tent
Nebular Focus. Great song selection.
Nice one WJA. Glad you enjoyed it 😎👍
Enjoyed that fella👍👍
Cheers Simon 👍
Nice one Dave very enjoyable. Looking forward to your next adventure. I'm looking to get one in before Christmas on Blencathra summit.
Much appreciated Gary. Blencathra. Awesome! It’s so frustrating seeing this fantastic weather and not being allowed to go to the Lakes 😩. ATB - Dave
Great stuff Dave lucky you got out in abit of snow. Don't know what your winter summit camping experience is but it's all good training. Blizzard and - 20 wind chill at 3,000ft is when you find out how much winter you want from your winter Wildcamping lol.
Maybe one day meet for a winter summit camp/camp. ATB.
P. S. a camp a month in this year is good I've done about a quarter of my usual amount of trips
Cheers Eddie😎👍. I’ve done a few full on solo winter camps in the mountains but nothing at 3000ft, yet. Hoping to do one this winter if the lockdown shenanigans eases. Like you say, it’s all good training and experience under my belt. You always learn something. Be it about your kit, your environment, or yourself. Stay safe, man. And ATB - Dave
Cracking Dave. Really enjoyed that. I’m desperate to get myself out. Winter hill could be my destination as it only 30mins away. I have one of those hand warmers. They’re great. Nice to get out in the snow too ❄️ superb mate!!! 👍🏼👏🏻
Many thanks Craig😎👍. Yeah, hand warmer is a nice little luxury. Hoping you can get out soon bud🤞
Mountain House meals are very nice mate
Thank you 👍
@@TheSoloSummiteer also Wayfayrer are really nice aswell and ample portions
Well done Dave looks cold enough to freeze your nuts off ! Good combination of sleeping gear , I lay down one of those cheap picknick rugs in the tent bottom as a layer of insulation not too heavy to carry a bit more comfort , enjoyed your vid cheers Dave !
Cheers bak. Glad you enjoyed it 👍. Staying warm is important however you choose to do it 👍
Definitely give Bla Band foods a try. I can recommend the wilderness stew.
Thanks Colin 👍
Dave, I wish you could put up a map and your track so we can see where you were at. I enjoyed your video.
Hi Stan. I know what you mean but I’m somewhat reluctant to give out exact locations in the video for fear of them becoming even more popular. If people ask me in the comments I do try to help. Glad you enjoyed it and many thanks for watching - ATB Dave
That was a great vid log... You're a tough bloke only..10 more pitches to go :)
Haha. Thanks Merky. Glad you enjoyed it 😎👍
@@TheSoloSummiteer it was excellent although I think you've 6 monthly camp pitches under your belt, not sure..
That’s right, Merky. My target is 12 consecutive months, but may be blocked due to Covid lockdowns. Anyway, I’ll do what I can 🤞
Another cracking video Dave, our moors are superb with plenty of history 👍
Thanks Les 😎👍
You are right about targets. Me and the Mrs targetted ourselves to walk 500 miles in the calendar year and went out in all weathers and achieved it 2 weeks ago. Walking mainly around Haslingden Grane, Cribden, Irwell Vale etc. etc. Been hard with work commitments etc. I guess you have spotted similar buildings over Grane and Musbury Heights with evidence of the mining there on your travels?
Nice one Mike, well done you guys. Ive not been over Musbury Heights for about 20yrs but have been thinking recent that I must check it out again. ATB - Dave
