- By the late 1700s, the Brown Bess had become the favored firearm for both professional soldiers and civilians, though the origin of its name remains uncertain. During the French & Indian War, Britain shipped Brown Bess muskets to colonial America, and many colonists, including Lt. Col. George Washington, used them in battle, later bringing them home for militia use. The experiences of the American Revolution, heavily influenced by the widespread use of the Brown Bess, played a significant role in shaping the Constitution and its emphasis on an armed populace as a safeguard against government tyranny.
