Ever since their initial conception, weapons that use gunpowder have come in a variety of shapes and sizes. One of the main aims of firearm design over the years has been to make the weapons smaller and easier to handle. There are some cases, however, when this is put aside and the weapons are made with anything but subtlety in mind. Here are a few examples of oversized guns used throughout history.

When I was in Boot Camp they still used oversized M-16s as punishment. If a private would lose or leave their rifle behind, they would then have to carry one of the oversized rifles around for a few days. They always looked absolutely miserable lugging those monstrosities around everywhere.
So you are willing to die for your country and they punish you? Evil.
Why did they stop using them?
@@longiusaescius2537 for all I know they still do. It was almost 15 years ago when I went through BCT.
@@lukegerard9009 were they any useful for teaching?
@@longiusaescius2537I can imagine it depends on the teacher and how much the recruits need to know- teaching them up to the tiny inner parts like springs, extractors etc. would presumably be easier with an oversize model, but I learned how to use the l98 and l86 with cadets just fine for range use handling the real but unloaded weapons

The British had an option to replace the hull machine-gun with the Boys anti-tank rifle on their universal carriers, and also gave the Soviets 1000's of them through lend-lease. And don't forget the Eargishplttenlauderboomer for oversized guns, lol.

A handful of boys rifles were also given to the US Marine corps

As a guy from Northern Ireland, I was curious if you would ever consider doing a video discussing the Troubles in NI, from the 60s to the 90s. Could make a good long video or series. There’s honestly plenty of material for discussion.
I love that they had attention to detail, like look at 6:14 when the soldier takes a bullet out of the box on the gun, they didn't have to do that but they did. ❤simple history for doing small stuff like this
In France we had some kind of Punt gun too, it was called "La canardière" it was illegal after an accident where a cow had a Bowling sized hole after a missed shot.
Dang
They gave it the AR-15 treatment

This might not be a popular fact, but the Persians also used the Jezail muskets and later Musket rifles during the Russo-Persian wars.
Even though the Persians ultimately lost their possessions in Northern Iraq to the Ottomans, and the Caucasus ranges, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan to Russia in 1722, the Persians did inflict massive casualties on the Russians because of the Jezail "rifled" muskets.
Musket rifles very interesting name...
When you are fighting Kaijus, you need big weapons.

0:25 is that shadow is heavy?
Pretty much xd
Some history of Jezail:
This weapon dated back at least to early 18th century in Iran(known as Persia back then)
It was called Jezayer or Jazayer
And it was one Nadershah's favourite weapons as the jezayerchi(infantry welding Jezayer) was his elite force
I have never been so early to a simplehistory video
Punt guns are the perfect concealed carries!
The custom lego guns i buy from some website:
Sorry if it's rude of me but you kinda forgot to mention the polish anti tank rifle the wz.35
Also the Finnish "Lahti L-39". Sorry if it's rude of me but these two are not so well known in the world xD
They left out a lot of anti tank rifles

My favourite ridiculous ammunition is the Eargesplitten Loudenboomer, which is a .378 Weatherby cartridge necked down to .22LR. It fires at up to 4600f/s, a .50 BMG is only 3000f/s. It was only an experimental cartridge but set the .22 world speed record.

There's also a wall gun, an extremely oversized gigantic musket either mounted on a wall or carried by 2 men. It's used to repel attacks and could be used as a makeshift punt gun if the enemy are close enough.
"What's this?"
"Its a wall gun"
"Is it supposed to be mounted on a wall or to destroy walls?"
"good question"
Anyway: here's the wall gun firing:

A matchlock muskets range was often just over 600 metres
Flintlocks like the brown Bess are closer to 800 and the jesail was most likely able to shoot another 50-150 meters past that
The accurate range of a flintlock musket in which 90 percent or more hitrates are found on single targets it is around 80 metres so the jesail could most likely hit most rounds at around 100 metres, both nearly always used past the accurate range
I am surprised early muskets werent mentioned, arquebusses start popping tf off around 1510 and with little way to increase strength of the iron muskets got massive, often given a fork rest to increase precision when aiming

“What, no punt-gun loicense, that’s ie-legal!” (Blows whistle aggressively)
Last one was indeed a weapon of perfection.
The punt gun is basically a cannon-sized shotgun.
The punt gun on the boat its like a military ship😊
I seen the oversized BAR in a naval museum of all places
Fun Fact: The Jezail Musket served as the base for the Cycler Rifle, a fictional weapon used by Tusken Raiders in the Star Wars franchise.
as kentucky ballistics said “with a shotgun your getting about 30lbs of felt recoil, but the punt gun is outting out over 800lbs of felt recoil” as he has his strapped to a 12 foot long table sled
I’ve seen an enlarged m2 machine gun for training in the Kelowna Veterans Museum
You really got to hit that p sound on punt gun.
When I was station in South Korea I was tasked with cleaning a warehouse where they still had some of those WW2 training aid guns. I remember the M22 most significantly as it had rounds that could be loaded into it. I always hoped they would end up in a museum or something. They were just there gathering dust and forgotten by anyone with authority.
0:26 IS THAT HEAVY TF2-
My favorite example is the tank. When you wield a gun the size of several SUV's, on a turret so heavy that it's mounted on an oversized tractor tread, you know you've got a big gun. A damn mobile cannon.
Everyone: Oh dude, TF2 heavy!
Nobody but me apparently: Oh dude, it's the bazaar bargain! So that's where they got the design from.
Ive seen an oversized BAR and an oversized Garand in the museum at Fort Harrison
Great episode!!!

7:10 don't forget that the Barrett is also used by EOD technicians to safely detonate a bomb during bomb disposal missions.
Sad you didn't mention the 700 Nitro Express elephant gun, and I'm sad that you are sponsored by something that will destroy your job
I’d like to get my hands on a functioning Jezail musket. It looks so unique and different from other muskets I’ve seen.
I saw one of those oversized training m60s at a surplus shop
With the amount of research that goes in these videos and the amount of subscribers and views it would be really nice to also give the sizes in metric. even just in text in the video.
4:41 the poles also made an Anti-Tank rifle, the wz. 35 UR
Bring the history about the battle of Athens in Tennessee
Bf1 can have some huge guns wielded by the player
Surprised SH didn't mention the Tankgewher as the grandpappy of AT-rifles.
I remember about a year ago, i was looking for a Deactivated M1 Garand to have as a neat thing to own, and i saw one of those massive training guns, with the side cut out, i thought it was hilarious
imagine the recoil on these things
The name or term punt gun comes from the fact that it was used on a punt which is a small boat
Also, anti material rifles are also sometimes used to destroy the sensors of a tank, making it useless.

You know I almost bought a real used training M16 (wasn't enlarged). But it was chambered in .22LR for firing training which I found odd
Hey simplehistory you forgot the finnish l39 antitank gun
I was looking forward to seeing Finland's Lahti L-39 20mm anti-tank rifle. It is a rather epic weapon and was widely used, successfully, during the Winter War.
Bruh really said: time to do the mobile gun game weapon statistics 😅😅😅😅
6:51 fake news, if that first gen ram has a slant six in it, it’ll run forever
The Ukrainian military has apparently armed squads with what can be described as modern day anti-tank rifles. They can't actually pierce the armor of tanks or even most armored vehicles. Instead, they're used to punch holes in logistics trucks, damage radar equipment, and on rare occasion eliminate infantry. All this while upwards of a mile or even two miles away. It takes two men to carry them. They hit their target then swiftly stow the gun in the back of a truck and drive away.
I think the oversized for training guns were meant as demonstration not for the soldiers to train with them.
Their numbers do not collaborate on any use during training.
I believe it was oversized soo the instructor could show the thing to multiple people at once in groups.
Very cool Video. I think you missed a very important variety of very large guns. The wall gun.
Poland had Kb. ur. wz. 35
How does lower recoil improve accuracy with a muzzle loaded weapon?
Why isn't the tankgewehr m1918 included in the anti-tank section? It was a German made anti-tank rifle used during ww1.
Missed opportunity to reference duck hunt when showing the punt gun

Kentucky Ballistics has a Punt Gun, his videos shooting it are entertaining, he has many bonkers guns including a four bore :)
Forgot to mention the first ani-tank oversized rifle - Mauser Tankgewehr
You missed wz 35 - polish anti armour rifle - used in WW II against german tanks.
On Jazaels... i think it is an important thing you did not cover. The musket had rifling... and the slugs are hexagonal.
01:00 are you sure with the punt gun? the Netherlands using that gun in the 80 years of war and also a blunder hand canon gun
Tankgewehr 1918 comes to mind.
Feels illegal to be this early (ALSO HELP WTF WAS THAT RECOIL 5:58)

can punt guns also be anti tank guns if there was a single round bullet?
Bro you need to get the punt gun a higher clip size and full out, mount it on a civillian boat and you got a cruiser

You definitely forgot about the European Harkebuse because it was the first oversized rifle in history.
