STOL Flying - Part 2 - Short Take Off and Landings (coming soon...)
The Bushcat is heading to NSW in a week for OZSTOL and so I decided I should brush up on my short take off and landing skills.
*DISCLAIMER* I am not an instructor or even a great pilot - but I do try my best and this video is designed to just provide some entertainment - but also to encourage people to go flying, practice and get better. I have flown for over 30 years and I am still learning - so if you do feel the need to comment please remember this - I am all about advice/learning - and this is a unrehearsed session - not a guide to stall recovery - that's best left to your instructors! **
First step is to practice some stalls. A stall is when the aircraft doesn't have enough air over the wings to keep it flying. Technically a stall actually is exceeding a critical angle of attack - a point in which the wing can not make enough lift to keep you flying.
Think about it this way - pop your hand out the window while driving - have your hand flat and you feel little resistance. As you tilt your hand back or upwards you will feel your arm want to go up. If you get past a certain point it will actually feel like your hand now wants to stop going up. In simple terms this is angle of attack.
Why practice stalls - well because every landing we want to take the aircraft from a flying state to being on the ground - which means every landing the aircraft will generally 'stall' either very close to or on the ground. Of course you can fly the plane onto the ground but you have to be going faster - and it takes longer - which is at the detriment of landing short!
This video will show you what happens with different setups and if anything I think will make you feel safer - as nothing bad happens in a stall!
Obviously if the wings aren't level, you are slipping or skidding the aircraft or you are low to the ground - stalls can be dangerous as you will lose height and possibly can enter a spin - but that's a chat for another day.
Part 2 - Take off and landing practice will be uploaded soon :)
Thanks for watching - please comment!

Great video mate , explained it very well.
Slow flight is something that we all should practice more often , too many pilots become blasé and complacent especially in the turning base to final.
I’m very aware of what I can and can’t do in my Jab and am looking forward to when I get my T500 up and going 😊🙏

If you wouldn’t mind, can you tell me what sort of strobes you’re running?? The ones we have produce an RF that interferes with the comms. They’re basically useless.

They are factory fitted on this plane so not entirely sure. You could shoot a message to skyreach possibly.
