- Five years ago, 49 people died and 53 were wounded when an ‘Islamic State’ sympathizer carried out a massacre at the Pulse LGBT club in Florida. Amanda Grau survived by hiding beneath dead bodies in a bathroom. How has she dealt with her experience?
Amanda Grau will never forget what happened that night. First, she called her mother - to tell her that she loved her, words that could well have been her last. Then she decided to do everything she could to survive and to protect as many people as possible from the killer: She helped police find a way inside the club and end the bloodshed. Today, Amanda Grau is a paramedic. She only took up the profession after the massacre, wanting to help others and to make the most of what she calls her second life. With DW's Ines Pohl she looks back at the tragic past and ahead to the future.

I worked as a nurse at ORMC, the hospital whom these victims were brought shortly after to. The chaos of the media outside that transpired the next couple of days. The rush of family members in the lobby, trying to find out where their loved one was. The shock and exhaustion on everyone’s face, the depth of pain and sadness that was felt. What touched me the most was the bravery and strength of the individuals who survived that I was privileged enough to care for. That was an experience I wouldn’t wish on my enemy, but changed my life forever. Orlando Strong ❤️

I always wonder what happens to victims of mass shootings. It seems strange to allow free and easy access to something that causes injury and death but you're on your own or at the mercy of an insurance company if those guns are used on you.

There an episode of 'I lived with a killer' about this. The guy struggled with himself liking men. His dad was an asshole. And he turned out to be an asshole too. Married a woman, treated her bad. She left him, he became a more radical Muslim. I say moral of this story is to raise your children with love, not with hate. Because when they grow up, they'll carry on your morals and (lack of) sympathy.

This guy's extreme reaction to his life should be/is an exception. We're all a product of how we were raised and where we grew up though. It defies our normal. For instance; if a kid gets hit every time they do something wrong, you teach that kid that violence is a solution to a problem.

This subtitle, "Surviving in the USA" made me realize how weird it feels slowly adapting to the mindset of someone living in a violent country. I lived in Orlando during the Pulse shooting. The community was mostly very supportive after the tragedy, but the psychological support for survivors was cut by the governor a few days before the 5 year anniversary, as well as housing for homeless LGBT+ teens.

I lived down the street from the shooter! Although I didn't know him, but saw him in Publix, I just walked in the store, and this man stood and stared at me, just stopped...and I smiled a little just to break an uncomfortable moment....this was just a day or two before Pulse happened, from my bedroom I heard the report on the news...and immediately his image was in my head...I walked into the living room and there's his face. My brother is gay, and was in Orlando at the time, of course I called him and luckily he didn't go as he and his partner planned, brother and I have always had this weird connection.... being the older sibling always keeping an eye out for him, and the others. Danny passed last July, and two weeks later I had a heart attack, really weird. I miss him! This story is especially hard for me because I truly sensed this evil that day in Publix Supermarket, sure wish I could have read his mind. In some ways this has brought out the best in people, and for that I am grateful. God bless you all.

To understand this, you have to do something you do not enjoy and that is figure out how to kill as many people as quickly as possible.

All he used was matches and an empty pop bottle that he filled up with a dollar's worth of gasoline
He killed 87 people and injured 6
The Kyoto Animation Studio fire is another mass murder event where the perpetrator used fire and killed more than most shooters on the "Mass Shooter top 25" list killed.
Alek Minassian used a Ryder rental Van and drove over the sidewalk killing 10 and injuring 14, which is high enough (had he used a gun) to be in the top 25 mass shooters of the United states, yet he was Armenian-Canadian.

The faster EMTs and Police are on scene the faster the Killer is stopped.
Usually with Mass Shooters they kill themselves or flee when the police arrive or even just an armed citizen.

Adam Lanza shot a bunch of pre-teens who tend to have smaller bodies so a bullet kills them much more easily.
Having them all lock themselves in a bathroom was the biggest mistake the teachers made.
The majority of (actual not gangland) mass shootings last about 5 minutes and about 40 rounds are expended.
40 rounds = 1x 30 round mag + pistol w/ 10 rnd mag or 4x 10 rnd mags or 6-7 revolvers with 6 shots each
the last one would be the New York Reload
You can acquire 6 black powder revolvers completely off the radar and completely legal.
Black powder revolvers can be bought without a permit etc. and arent even really consider firearms.
Even though you can kill with them just as easily.

When people are murdered en mass in places like Chicago or Miami it isn’t even mentioned beyond local news as if their lives were of less value because they weren’t of a specific demographic. Also, no flag was flown at half staff for them, nor our children. I’m just wondering why different language is imposed depending on how one identifies.
