Alcahest (アルカエスト) is an Action JRPG developed by HAL Laboratory that was released only in Japan. The story is standard fantasy fare where our hero Alen goes on a journey to stop the evil emperor Babilom and the demon god Alcahest from conquering the world. As with many other action RPGs made at the time, it has standard experience point and companion systems and is played from a top-down perspective. Certain characters can join your party as you progress, and you can collect items to help boost your stats.
In this run, jafem ( tasvideos.org/... ) saves the world from Alcahest in record time, utilizing various broken attack combinations to quickly beat enemies and a "zombie" glitch to skip a number of dialogue boxes. For details on what was done in the run and the mechanics of the game, you can read the author's notes ( tasvideos.org/... ).
This game is what happens when you let the Kirby developers make their own Zelda.
Love the reuse of kirby sounds in this game. Especially the dash and slashing sounds.
Not to mention the music in parts. Oh well, as long as you’ve got the soundfont on your computer…
If you've played Hyperzone (another Hal game) some of the music is similar.
Like the boss around 2:30 sounds like the Bio Plant stage.
Didn't know about this game till now. TAS aside, this game has a lot of soul put into it from sound design to gameplay, awesome~
CEO: "We need a top down game where the hero can take the form of several fighters. Which gaming companies can handle this?"
*Pink blob, bringer of death maker HALKEN*
*Final Fantasy before Enix*
The SFX library in this game is like Kirby Super Star meets Arcana haha
This hero is to cool to run. He power walks everywhere at extreme pace
Wow, an action RPG developed by HAL and published by Square?
This looks like a lot of fun, I would have enjoyed it as a young lad if it was released in the US.
良き!
Crazy. It's like the devs borrowed resources from several games to make this one. Nowadays people flip tables and sue over copyright over just one sound byte. lol
It looks like they only recycled from their own games, which isn't against any law that I know of.
nice work
God the SNES S-SMP was a goddamn amazing thing.
