    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

“A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
Always good to know your strengths but the only way to really know them is to diversify and find out what you are good at.

I think I heard earlier on this channel that writer-director(-producers) are the seat of power in Hollywood today, so at least broadening our skillsets to that extent seems like a pretty smart choice IMO
Also, Bill Burr once said that knowing when to say No is just as important as knowing when to say Yes, and although it’s pretty vague advice, it might help you sharpen your skills toward a specific direction instead of flopping around all over the place for decades
And finally, I feel like “Learn all the crew’s jobs, too!” is kind of a trap for directors, because any time/experience you gain in someone else’s skills is energy deprived from your own set of skills (namely guiding actors, capturing the emotion/essence of the screenplay/story, knowing when and why a certain technique will crank that scene’s impact up to 11, etc. etc.)
Long story short, I guess: “Jack of all trades, master of none”

This has been my philosophy during my 36yr game development career. I'll tell you, I can't count how many times some manager has been mad that I dare to diversify my talents or even dare to get in the trenches and provide art, design, code, etc. when I'm supposed to be "just directing". It's like they just don't understand wanting to *create*. They don't understand someone who would want to understand the craft of the people you're directing. They don't understand someone who would garner respect from showing you can not just "tell" but also "do". It's served me well all these decades, so not stopping now.

That reminds me of a party I got roped into and one of the middle-manager types was actually proud they didn't code anymore, like they were now above "those people."
When I was younger and coding for a living, it was taboo at the time to even mention you enjoying coding games. The need for optimization in gaming (even at my amateur level) worked really well at the time for some of the biz stuff. People asked how I came up with stuff when they really didn't want to hear the answer.
The world is a really silly place.

My IMDB page has credits as writer, art director, animator, storyboard artist, and layout artist... even more that are not up on IMDB, animatic editor, character designer, and animation director. So yeah, I totally believe in diversifying.

The same as CHNAGE. If you cannot adapt you worn out soon. The thing we saw during COVID. The people qho couldn't change their lifestyle, health and adapt to thw new normal were either infected terribly or affected mentally.

it isnt realistic to be an authority on all these different departments. Focus on your own and trust your heads of department to do their job.

    • @trulyindiestudios

No where in here does it say become a authority on all of them. It says to diversify so you get an understanding of what they do and what it takes. That way when you have to be the capstan of the ship you have a better understanding of how the whole thing works and in turn it makes you a better film maker.
