My old Adams was modified by a friend who put in 197 actual channels. We don’t count SSB as an extra channel. He removed the dimmer and installed a 10 position rotary switch. But it didn’t do anything unless you ran a magnet along side of the standard microphone. Then the channels were activated until you turned it off or removed power, then it was a normal radio again. It is a truly great radio!
I have a nice one here modified by Maurer in Austria. Does 160 channels and FM. I see Maurer is now doing a frequency readout vfo style modification board with memories etc...
Hands down this radio is iny top 10 of all radios ,as a technician..I love a radio with great design... I love all undien chassis ... There really designed to work...and top of line on SSB ..very stable under proper tx alignment... Top notch ..radio...and mike if you have several of these ..can I buy any of the ones you wish to sale..... .I want them ,I collect all uniden chassis ... I love 858..pc .and the 8917
Very helpful & interesting Mike. I learnt a lot. Just purchased 1 of these today. Will get my tech to check it all out. Might Keep it & sell the Galaxy DX959B. Cheers, 892, Brisbane, Australia.
That was Intresting. My first Radio was the Adams, probably had everything from President in my Kiddy time but always come back to the Adams.Lather i had it in My car, probably 10 years in my Truck and it always works pretty good.I always use the PA,NB and Normal switch for the Channel mod.The only Problem over here with the Adams was.Local Stations always use FM.On Sideband its missing the 5 khz switch. But whatever CB is quiet over here and my Adams sit in the living room the last years.Think i have 2 Bezels somwehre,we paint it in the original silver many years ago.The Problem this time was the letters, think today thats a easy one to get them back on.By the way, there is a guy in Austria,Maurer, take a look for him,he does pretty cool mods on that old Radios
Think of an electrolytic cap as a quick discharge battery, which is what they are, and think about how all batteries eventually go bad. Worse, was the "capacitor plague" that hit in the 90s, and caused many problems. Industrial espionage was said to be the cause of it.
i have a similar radio like this. it's a Superstar GR. of course it sits in storage for the last couple years or so, The darn thing has mods , squeals among other things, will get it fixed one day
My Adams also has the D21/D22 jumper, but in addition to that, they connected the two striped ends of the diodes together as well (and I don't have the zener clarifier mod). Did you ever find out what that "mod" is supposed to do? The fact that whoever did the mod doesn't seem to understand how a diode works makes me think that "mod" is just snake oil, scrapping some sort of protection circuit that will likely never be needed.
Hi Mike in Europe /UK ... the president Adams was sold as a 80 Ch radio with the same add on sticker saying Hi and low which was the cb / pa switch originally hope this helps
Hello I have an old one for years now it only has one mod that is the hi and low channels but they don't line up like 27,555 should be on channel 12 not 16 an 27555 and it is time for capacitor change and I have a few question. I cannot fin the exact value capacitors example 2.2uF 25V i can only find 100v to buy here. I would send it to you Mike but the trip is to risky for the radio.
Maybe they where trying to do a precision rectifier/detector aka "super diode" clarifier mod and did not know what they where doing? That is the only reason I can think of for a diode in a clarifier power line?!?!
Could we 3D print a new fascia, can you use Thinners to remove that stupid glue from the PCB, Maybe it is time UNIDEN used DSP processing for all functions on the CB transceiver and a PLL based around frequency syntheses chip and leave nothing for golden screwdrivers or set modders to do.

Thank you for sharing Mike. Joel
I have had 2 President Adams, very good radios.

Ever work or see a Courier Gladiator PLL? Makes the Adams look normal in size. They're absolutely massive.

The problem with finding a really good front bezel to use is that it's generally attached to a good radio. Good luck for that search Mike. Lol
i have a similar radio like this. it's a Superstar GR. of course it sits in storage for the last couple years or so, The darn thing has mods , squeals among other things, will get it fixed one day
They have scan ..and 858 chassis .only things that fail is the led lamps that indicate mode ...
Nice video
It's better then a cobra 148 GTL and down here in Virginia the president Adam sells for $400
Crystals and Carbon resistors last waaaaaayyyyyy longer than electrolytics. I restore radios and rarely is their a need to replace these components.
I wonder mike if you will this do video of restored it it look nice radio
President Adams, Grant and Jackson have similar faceplates. Nice rigs though.
Mike, have you ever seen this model radio with a 10k ohm carbon resistor soldered from the center pin of the SO239 and ground?
My Adams also has the D21/D22 jumper, but in addition to that, they connected the two striped ends of the diodes together as well (and I don't have the zener clarifier mod). Mike, would you have a clean channel knob for an Adams that you'd sell me and ship to Ireland?

P S a well know mod for this radio was adding a VFO and people still do it eg www.rigpix.com/cbfreeband/president_adamsvfo.htm
It was an Hans Muller modification [Muller Electronics] and no details were released as far as i am aware.

I have one of them, and it doesn't putout the normal power, and doesn't seem to be pushing modulation. What do you recommend ?
hello Mike I seen most of your videos I haven't realistic TRC 449 no channels notification you in fairly good condition I would like to get it rebuilt
You can get tone of channels by pushing the pll...
Where is the dummy safe reverse polarity rectifyer diode that when poofed, continues blowing fuses whed n key up
Maybe they where trying to do a precision rectifier/detector aka "super diode" clarifier mod and did not know what they where doing? That is the only reason I can think of for a diode in a clarifier power line?!?!
i have a 1970s pennys radio that needs recapped, how would i get in touch with you?
If you were to sell that radio, once repaired, I'd be really interested
can't go past the GE series, am, ssb. the Blonde of CB radios.
You got any coverage you want to sell for that kind of radio
I'm not sure what your asking. If you mean do I want to sell any radios, no. I do not sell radios, I only do repairs.
this radio has been "secret CB'ed"! that jumper mod on D21 and D22 and the bodged zener (probably a 9.1v) are classic secret CB mods/hacks.
What a stupid way to do channels...always use rotary on this radios ...or the channle king board ...
