      There's only SO many ways to see Star Wars and if they had used the recycled ffg art it wouldn't have felt 100% all in from them. They made a VERY calculated choice for this and i applaud them!

    For me the art is not cartonish... is comic styled... and there are lots of different styles in comics... and in some of them the character doesn't perfectly match the actors face (like in the han solo card). I think that they pretend to diverge from previous sw card games made by them to give it a distinctive look and say... hey, this is different!

    Artwork is subjective. The ships are my favorite pieces of artwork. My issue has been not getting any major pulls (Vader, Boba, Luke unit cards) and seeing their prices skyrocket online. I have bought 2 boxes, 1 prerelease box, and about 15 loose boosters. Chalk that up to bad luck, but I need those cards to make my constructed decks competitive. So I am just sticking to casual play for now until I can hopefully trade for some of those cards, or get some good pulls.

    Honestly, having owned multiple ffg star wars products I value new art over reusing the same art over and over from over 10 years ago. It is still good art but has become a sort of visual cliche now. The comic style of unlimited is growing on me a little. I didn't like it at first but some cards look very good. I especially like the style they went with for the tie fighter family of cards.

    I prefer the stylized art over photorealism, TBH. We've had that, or movie stills, for literal decades of Star Wars card games (and board games) at this point. The art is all unique and created individually for each specific card. I'm glad that we get art like you see on the Darksaber or Thrawn's Leader card instead of everything looking like it was taken directly from the movies or tv series with a filter thrown on.

    I just played 6 games tonight with my buddy. We have been really enjoying the game. We have a history in mtg, but also played destiny for a few years.
    I think this game has nailed the most important aspects of a tcg. Building decks is a lot of fun and intuitive, the distribution of good cards is spread out well across rarities, cracking packs is a lot of fun, and most importantly the gameplay keeps you engaged with the single action rules. Choosing what to lose as a resource can be agonizing and it’s possible to look multiple turns ahead, while trying to adapt to your opponents moves.
    Overall, I agree I don’t like some of the art but there is a lot of great art too like you said. For us, the positive of the gameplay well outweighs the negatives.

  • @prudentparatrooper385
    @prudentparatrooper385 4 месяца назад

    On the art point, it's not that they have a cartoon style, it's the fact that half the cards are cartoon and the other half are realistic. Pick one and use that don't swap between the two. As for the biggest problem. Probably the fact that Boba decks are tearing through tourneys right now. Top 8 decks in the release tournament in Europe were ALL Boba Command decks. Even in the top 16 there were only 4 non Boba decks. That is probably the main issue.

  • @TheBIGBEAR812

    I wasn't gonna pick this up because of the art, and I just got HEAVILY invested into Disney Lorcana. The idea behind that was to gateway my wife into gaming, and she pulled an enchanted Hook the other day, and really loves opening the packs. It's a basic enough system that she can follow as a beginner.
    I still have my WOTC Star Wars TCG, and I've dabbed in the DC/Marvel Vs system, but TCG's aren't my thing. I prefer mini war games.
    But, I got the two player starter, grabbed two booster boxes, and pulled a showcase Palpatine. Crazy lucky since those are supposed to be 1 in 12 boxes, but now I'm hooked. I suck at playing it though. I've been playing online trying to get a hang of the Luke Starter deck, and I get SHREDDED by the Vader AI deck. It's been brutal.

  • @riverbean18
    @riverbean18 4 месяца назад +1

    I don't feel like the art is a problem with the game. Most TCGs have really varied artwork. Of course there's a couple that some people might not like, but that's kind of with every game. I used to play Pokemon TCG and there's a lot of really uncanny artwork, some where you might hardly be able to figure out what character you're looking at, some where the subject is literally a still shot of a clay model or crochet model. I think the diversity of art style is a good thing, because it makes the game feel more "large scale" and similar to other popular TCGs. The reason art like this works for TCGs is because if you don't like the Chewbacca from this set, there's gonna be another one in one of the other sets that comes out this year. I think the diversity is a good shake-up.

  • @taylorwyatt1718

    it helps that alot of the art gets better on the alt foil or hyperspace versions. i think it would be cool if future sets added different variants of foils or alt arts to and it would help people get an art that they do like if theyre that bothered by a specific card art. Personally none of the art bothers me too much and everyone is gonna interpret and have their own opinions so if theres only a couple cards that arent great im totally fine with it

    Eclectic. As the card pool and artist pool increases over time these sets may fall into an overall style of being considered eclectic. The card art and press releases early on did not make me want to even consider playing this game.
    Looking back on Destiny and how the sets look as a whole reflect this eclectic style as well. Unless you have one or a very small group of artists working on a project there is bound to be this type of variety of styles. Destiny had some great original artwork as well as what I would consider film stills run through a simple image filter. The art director(s) may give direction to the artists to have their own take on a character, ship, scene, etc.
    The artwork on-card, in real life, in my opinion is better than what I saw online initially.

  • @leoismaking
    @leoismaking 4 месяца назад +1

    They are being "wild" with it and allowing many different styles including some goofier ones. Early MTG was somewhat like this; check out classic cards by Phil Foglio for example. But more than that, it reminds me of the old Star Wars Galaxy cards, which had guest artist do all kinds of interpretations of the characters. Do I like it? More than I thought, though some cards are rather questionable! But I think that is the "theme". A lot of earlier SW games tried very hard reach "accuracy" with the setting; think of the tight army lists in Legion for example. This is "Unlimited". Want to have some Imperials in your Rebel deck? If you pay for it, sure! I'm sure we'll eventually see things like goofy-looking Han Solo fighting alongside a painterly-style hyper real Darth Revan. Is that cool? I think so! It's different. There are plenty of other SW games that strive for that immersion factor. This isn't that! This is kind of a celebration of a lot of different views of SW, all throwing down against each other.

    I’m just glad they started with a lot of the og characters. I think a big problem with Destiny’s release was the starters and many of the first set focusing in the sequels. The og characters came in way too late. The demographic that would have bought into it weren’t fans of the sequels.

    I think they just had a varied pool of artists with very different interpretations of some of these characters, and very different styles, and that's fine. MTG has many many artists and the art from one card to the next can vary wildly, but it's mostly ignored because, these characters have only ever existed in the context of mtg, there was no magic tv show or movie that any of the art would be derivative of. Honestly most of the art is fine, and some of it is very very good, and that's the case with every other tcg.

    I've been noticing this a lot with the merchandise in the parks. They're going with more cartoon-y representations of the characters. They also seem kind of averse to the original classic Star Wars logo, opting instead for this generic hand-written-looking font that just doesn't say Star Wars at all. Combine that with how Disney's Star Wars brand ID that runs before their shows features nothing but droids and masked characters and it's pretty obvious they're trying to avoid the likeness of any actual actor.

    The art was kind of the biggest problem for me, so didn't get too excited until closer to release. As I saw the gameplay more, I was able to put aside my issues with the art and jump in. I'm glad I did. The game is fun, and most of the art I didn't like actually looks okay in real life on the cards. There's still a few things I don't like, but not as bad as it was just seeing preview images online. I'm viewing this as like MTG's Alpha/Beta sets. A lot of the art from the early MTG sets didn't age well. Some of the art has become iconic, but a lot of it just isn't really that good. However, the game was still a hit and has grown to what it is today. While I don't expect SWU to take over MTG ever, my thought is that it will take a similar path and these earlier sets will be looked at a bit differently as time goes on.

    My biggest problem: I can’t buy a box! I’m stuck with just the starter set, and I can’t even spend money on the game. Hopefully they’ll handle other sets better!

    I heard Harrison Ford did not allow his likeness. Yeah besides a few cards a lot of the art is great. I love playing the game

      They're staying away from everyone's exact likeness in order to not have to pay royalties to any actor

    Regarding art: i think its the inconsistency in the art direction that annoys me, not the actual artwork of a specific card (although Solo and Chewie do look awful :p )

    As a comic book reader, I'm totally fine with the art direction. Every artist is going to have a slightly different take on a character. Some are photorealistic, some are cartoony, some are more stylized in other ways. It's art. Embrace the diversity of styles. You may hate some, you may love some.

    TCG player base is far bigger than LCG's. Me and my buddies don't know about Destiny. And even if we do we won't probably care. We're big MTG casual players and collectors since the 90s and decided to shift to FAB. But since we felt FAB is more focused on competitive players, we kept looking. We're torn between Altered and SWU but eventually went with SWU since we prefer the combat style of play.
    Art? What art?! True TCG player would prefer the 'ugly' artist proof arts over the digitally printed art, everytime!

    I was bothered by the art initially when the game was announced, but has since grown on me and I like a lot of it. Chewbacca (leader) and Jabba are terrible in my opinion though. I don't see those two growing on me.

    Here's my theory - I think there's some signals that the designers are OG Star Wars fans, and they like to sneak in some references for other OG fans. So like hints towards Han shooting first, Wedge's subtitle is more a reference to his original canon storyline, and Han's art seems referential to the Holiday Special. Personally I can appreciate the goofy looking cartoon art if I frame it that way.

    The art might be more "Disney-like" overall, yes. But I don't really care. The art was better overall in SW Destiny for sure. The game is super fun/cool. That's what really matters, to me at least. And I don't get that whole "burned by FFG" argument. I own so many of their games and yes, some have been completed/finished, but so what? It doesn't prevent me from still playing them. It seems that all games, card games especially, should go on forever like Magic... why?

    I didn't like the art at first but then heard they have over 1000 commissioned artists and it's all original art. Knowing that its all original art helped the fact that some of it isn't great to me. Also, the Han Showcase is awesome, but agreed the regular leader card is crazy bad.

    I would say 90% of the art is really good. There are definitely a bunch of cards that are horrendous, though, and I think you hit them both; Han Solo and Leader Chewy. Just... no. and dont get me wrong, the artists of both are talented and have some great pieces but these 2 just shouldn't have made the cut.
    Jabba doesn't bother me as much as others, its not great but it doesn't make me cringe.
    The Star Desteoyers, in particular, have been great art.
    Love all your Star Wars content and loving your Unlimited coverage!!
