    Here's a set up that can achieve the same thing for much less. The only thing that I find absolutely essential is the Audient Evo 4 is because of how insanely quiet its preamp is. So much so that you don't even need a mic booster preamp even if you have a 280 ohm dynamic microphone.

    I use the Evo 4 as well, had since launch it's been pretty good. I intially went with the focusrite solo, but had stablity problems with it at all buffer sizes. One problem I found with the Evo 4 is that it does not like being in a USB hub for those interested, when powered by a hub phantom power wont always turn on. It's also worth noting the Evo can be used standalone without the use of a computer whilst the focusrite scarletts have to be connected up before the preamps kick in. Paired with an Aston Stealth it's a great little setup. The stealth has a gain lifter built in just supply the 48v and you get +40dB of gain or so.

    One thing to keep in mind about the Audient Evo4 is its high output impedance on the headphone out, around 20 ohms. I got my audio interface with 20 inputs and 10 speaker outputs as well as 2 headphone outputs for gaming. Don't think that anything here is overkill.
    But seriously though, I use this mixer for way more than just gaming. If all I did was gaming I doubt I would have gone passed my Scarlett Solo. And I use my mixer instead of my scarlett solo for gaming because I can add things like compression and EQ before the signal even reaches the pc, and also because of much better preamps and headphone amps.

  • @_fatalruin
    @_fatalruin 4 года назад

    This may be a decent product for what it's intended to do which is a analog to digital input converter with headphone monitoring, but if you are primarily using this for headphone output, you should look elsewhere. For your 150 ohms HD58X the Evo 4 can only dump about 30-40 mW of power into them which not enough to wake up those drivers. Even worse is that the output impedance is 50 ohms which is crazy high for a headphone amp. According to the 1/8th rule (look it up) you would need headphones with an input impedance of 400 ohms to not encounter huge issues, reduced expected volume, and horrible driver damping leading to very loose bass, namely. If you mainly need a good headphone dac/amp with an mic input, look at the Schiit Fulla (over 3 times the power of the Evo 4 with an output impedance of 0.5 ohms) or the new Hel.

  • @laurensbrantsen
    @laurensbrantsen 4 года назад +2

    First of all, I really like your content and it helped me several times in the past with certain purchase decisions. Thanks for that! I understand why you choose this setup given the functionality it offers for your use. However, in my opinion (as a sound engineer and also an owner of the SM7B/PSA1 and a HD650), I think that the price ratio of the products seems off-balance. I mean, the Evo4 is a good interface for its price of approx. $100, but to pair it with an SM7B (a $400 mic) even with a sE DM1 Dynamite to boost the gain (another $100), you're not using the SM7B to its full potential. Of course, it will work with sufficient gain, but the SM7B can sound much better with a better mic pre-amp than the one built-in a $100 interface like the Evo4. And I am not basing this solely on the price of the Evo4, but because for a certain application, I am using the Evo4 at work for remote sports commentary, therefore I know how the Evo4 sounds from my own experience. The reason why I am responding to this, is that people might get the false impression that the balance of the combination of products is good price/performance wise, while you could either save some money by not buying the SM7B if paired with the Evo4 (get a cheaper mic, e.g. Rode Procaster, Podcaster etc that would be used more to its full potential), or either spend more on a good external preamp or an interface that gets the most out of the SM7B. I hope this helps someone who is considering buying a similar setup for gaming/streaming. All the best!

      what audio interface do you recommend for the sm7b as of today ?

  • @cordes85
    @cordes85 4 года назад

    I use Beyerdynamic 1770 pro open headset 250 ohms, Focusright 2i2 Usb Audio Interface, x2 Krk active Rokit gen-4 8s, Krk 10" Active Sub with Passthrough to monitors. Blue Microphones Yeti using XLR to TRS. Also use Ableton Live for making tracks. I also have Astro A50 PS4 edition to use for PC, for quick 7.1 sounds. But essentially a DAC is important for me, when using My Pioneer Audio interface to connect to my Pioneer PLX 1000 Turntables for warm needle crisp analogue sound.

    Man that one hell of a setup! 🔥
    But boy that mic is overkill!
    I’m using the blue yeti, the HD58 and Soundblaster x6
    I think it makes more sense as a gaming-only audio setup 👌🏻

    Huh what are the chances I just recently changed over from a Audio Technica AT2020 to a Shure SM7B although with a Triton Audio Fethead for my inline pre amp and a Focusrite Scarlett solo for my interface either way nice one dude! Since getting it have to admit I love my SM7B so hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I get mine anyway loved the video!

    Another recommendation, if you are afraid that your USB will send buzz (either due to bad isolation or high power draw from other components in your computer - or both), get an external DAC (Digital Analogue Converter) and connect it to your computer using an optical or SPDIF cable. That way - your sound will be converted OUTSIDE of your computer - making noise and buzz from other components a thing of the past.

    Julian Krause and Podcastage are 2 superb RUclipsrs when it comes to audio interfaces and microphones. Julian Krause actually did a test of several different audio interfaces focusing simply on the headphone port and the Audient Evo 4 scored 3rd place so it's a good pick! You also have Z reviews if you need to get into headphones and speakers. Also wanna throw Booth Junkie in here because he also knows his stuff. So 4 fantastic RUclipsrs for people who want to dive deeper into it. :)

    Can't say I ever understand why you would want to hear your own voice when on coms. Anytime I have tried there is always a delay between what I say and what I hear and it makes it so I actually can't talk as my brain gets confused at what I am hearing. If there was a way to make sure there was no delay at all maybe I understand but open back headphones just seem to be the better option for this imo

    Oh that's perfect, I was looking at upgrading to an XLR mic, going for the Rode Podmic, but the mixer was always the big outlay. Considering a GoXLR Mini so I'm set for streaming, but the cost is still a bit high. Seems like the Evo 4 could be a nice middle ground

  • @thedoodler882

    great setup. I'm surprised that interface needs an inline preamp for the sm7b. Could you not just boost the mic in post (can also be done for live streaming)? That interface has 58db gain EIN -127db, that should be enough. Also the sm7b sounds very good out of the box I agree but at least a bass cut somewhere between 40 - 80 might be a good idea, at least, it might make it more pleasant for people with good headphones who are listening, nothing in that range needs to be heard anyway.

    I got a pair of Phillips Fidelio X2 headphones. They're open back, large sound stage but the imaging in certain games isn't great. (Stereo headphones)
    In games like Overwatch or Battlefield with built in Dolby Atmos my 3D audio is amazing. But in other games like Call of Duty I hardly have 3D sound.
    Anyone know how to solve my problem? Gaming audio drivers? I wish I could just buy the Dolby Atmos audio software that games like Overwatch and battlefield use and apply that to all my games.
    Using headphones with really good imaging like Audio Technica ATHAD500's combined with games with Dolby Atmos support sound mind blowingly accurate. But how do we get that next level 3D audio+imaging in games that don't have great audio support?
    Does Audient EVO4 interface actually have any smart 3D audio processing built for games? Or is this strictly a interface to plug more audio devices and volume control?

    The Sure SM7B cut out so much of the room echo that the Rode mic was picking up! Really obvious when you do the side by side comparison, but your old videos still sounded good on the Rode mic, so I guess it's just a nice-to-have upgrade. A cheaper alternative to the Sure would be the Rode Podmic - should also work well in an untreated room, but for a few hundred $ less. Would probably still need the Dynamite stick though.
