"I'll solve equations with my right hand and write names with my left. I'll take a potato chip... and eat it!"
The most dramatic anime scene ever
Absolutely iconic, I think of this series and that scene is first to mind
I love how they took a originally scene and line and made it so over the top dramatic. Lol you can’t find this passion of story telling in the US anymore
Absolute badass scene, and English really didn't do justice to it
"What is the top tier quality I look for in a woman?"
"Stupidity?"
"Loyalty"
"That was my next guess"
I was genuinely on Yagami side all the way even though I know what he was doing was moraly wrong. The way he would execute his plans was just so thrilling and exciting to watch :')
We need more "genius rivalries" in anime like Light and L or Reinhard and Yang
Reinhard and Yang? Whats that anime called? Been looking for another battle of wits anime since death note but no good
@@fourwheelerjock Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It's more about space strategies and politics rather than the detective thriller mind games
@@Ash_Wen-li Ahhh :(
@@fourwheelerjock their rivalry and competing to win against the other to prove they are “right” it made the whole series so thrilling and compelling. I was so sad after L “steps back”. He was a true rival to Light.
@@whitedragoness23 Death Notr id one of those animes that literally kept me in the edge of my seat and thinking the entire time I watched it. Haven't found another anime besides maybe AOT first few seasons that gave me the same feeling that death not did
Death note is iconic and the Manga has a different but similar ending.
Does L die in the manga? I wish he hadn't in the anime smh
@@blk124 yes L dies in the Manga, LIght die differently at the end.
I'm glad the Walter White comparison was made.
One nuanced discussion I see plenty in BB community but almost not at all in DN community is that DN fans seem to either think that Light was never "innocent" and he flat out always was the evil Kira within, or he simply had a switch and turned "into" Kira, while I think that's a valid argument and discussion, I almost never heard the idea that Light and Kira are two sides of the same coin, like many point out about Walter White.
Now the anime really goes hard with the literal light (ha) switch with the memory loss and regain, so you could argue the distinction is more apparent, but I look at moments like when his father died and see very slight glimpses of legitimate grief there. It's one thing to ponder killing your family, it's another to go through with it or see it happen.
Could be that average Death Note fans might be younger than Breaking Bad fans, or maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but wished this angled was discussed more.
The thing is, Light's already gone off the deep end by the end of episode 1. So we never got to see his corruption in a slow progression. If we did, Deathnote would be a completely different story.
@@Ash_Wen-li that's definitely true, but even in that one episode you get to see his moral dilemma
The series is great, but it basically dies with L. Near is..... eh.... not L.
When it was Light vs. L, I honestly wasn't sure who I wanted to win. Morally, I was on L's side but even with the Death Note, Light felt like such an underdog that I loved seeing how he'd slip out of the jam he was in. I didn't really want their intellectual back-and-forth to end, I just figured L would get him eventually and that would be that.
There's a lot of different moments people will say is the highlight of the show, but mine is seeing Light's grand plan in Ep.24-25 play out. Seeing all these different plot elements come together in order for Light to, as someone else said, "kill three birds with one of the birds" was excellent. Nothing was pulled out of the writer's ass to make it work, nothing suddenly had their rules changed to have it make sense, nobody had to be out of character to keep things running. You really felt like this was a grand finale the writers were building towards long-term. That it checkmated the smartest detective in the world, but held off just long enough that said detective realized he was screwed right before he was killed twisted the knife in all the right ways. It was spectacular to watch and threw me for a loop.
I won't say I hated the last 12 episodes, because I didn't. And I did enjoy Mello and Near as characters. Paradoxically, I wanted Light to win as I found him the most interesting of the three but also knew that he wouldn't. After Ep24 and 25's grand plans unfolded I figured that however Light was brought down, it would have to be intense, clever, and satisfying, and I knew the writers were capable of that. Which is why I was so disappointed with what they did go with.
If Ep25 did everything right, Ep37 did everything wrong. The notebook switcheroo, while cleverly set up, hinged on a major deus ex machina. Supremely confident and capable Light instead panics and overreacts at the slightest opposition with no backup plans whatsoever. The same Light who was so sneaky he managed to kill Higuchi with L sitting next to him instead wildly flails his limbs and makes such a show of trying to write down Near's name in front of everybody that he would've been more effective just using a gun.
One of the most intense animes out there went out with a wet fart because the despicable Light Yagami we'd been waiting to see get his for 37 episodes didn't lose to Near, instead Light's idiot twin lost to the writers.
Honestly... I wouldn't be surprised if Death Note sort of influenced the mind behind Breaking Bad.. not vice versa
Death Note was first technically, you never know
Death Note was the anime that got me into anime. So I'm glad to see it still lives up to the hype.
Also, I actually really like Nier and Mellow. They're characters that grew on me overtime. I think what I love about them is how flawed they are compared to the perfect L and that only by cooperating together were they able to stand should to shoulder with him and defeat Kira.
Mello is definitely the more interesting of the two.
Hello Ryan, I don't know if you are gonna read this, but if you do I really recommend reading the manga(the art is also incredible) for second half that is equivalent of the las third of the anime. The anime cut a lot of stuff that was important and also changes the ending. I think although it's a small change, it really shows how anime director decide to portray Light, which is very interesting subject of discussion. I don't think it's gonna change your mind about Near and Mello, but it's definily a improvement. With that said, I am glad you enjoyed this series overall, and if you want another story that focus in more of pyschological/battle of wits type thing Liar Game is fantastic, except for the ending. I am surprised you didn't mention the directing choices, and the soundtrack.
"Liar Game is fantastic, except for the ending" a bad ending can ruin an entire series. Look at how game of thrones has been remembered. The amazing first 5 seasons were overshadowed by the egregiously terrible ending.
ryan the chad has finally joined the death note kira cult
When it comes to Misa...man i dunno, sometimes the line between blind obedience and loyalty is slim
"We all need a Misa in our lives"
Speak for yourself Ryan
Death note is a weird one , at first i hated the ending and the near and mello stuff , but i cant keep my mind off of the show and ive warmed up to the last half considerably and even the ending . Highly recommend checking out the manga for the near/mello portion of the story as its more well done than the anime and the ending is different.
Death note is the best anime hands down
It's very good and a classic must watch but I wouldn't say its the best series I ever read/watched
I wouldn’t call it the best it definitely is one of the greats don’t get me wrong but I wouldn’t say it’s the absolute best
@@Thenamelessgod-cz9em what would you say is the absolute best then?
@@mikeunleashed1 There's no absolute best. It's all personal preferences and subjectivity.
@@mikeunleashed1 to be honest I don’t even have an absolute best but if you must know some of my favorites are attack on Titan. violet evergarden. And a silent voice
I was was another video, then I sees a clip of videos of a Ryan finally watches death note. It’s about time!
8:57 THAT'S RIGHT! Put some respect on Misa Misa's name!
Near and Mello are quite enjoyable and add a different dynamic keeping Light on edge. They are designed be parts of L's personality separated as individuals. Mello is aggressive, impulsive, while Near is extremely calculating, emotionally void. The manga is alot more generous to them, laying the groundwork for their introduction much earlier, and the 2nd half of the story. I think the last half is really great because we get to see how overtly vile light has become, as the stakes get even more intense!
I've been on Light's side and the ending in the manga really expands on how flawed Light's approach really was regardless of the results of his reign of terror.
Always compared it to BB myself as well, love psychological battle stories. You covered it very well!
Light made Misa cut her life short TWICE and for that I will never forgive him
If you have not seen it, dororo would be an amazing sidestep of a short anime to watch next. A truly exalting revival of a 50 year old manga
Dude you only just watched deathnote? Now you can feel the pain of just how fucking bad the Netflix adaptation is lol 😆
I can't wait
@@RealLifeRyan You might throw up, it's that bad haha.
The detail that misamisa is going to be live forever because of her 2 shinigami.
7:14 she’s literally mikasa without a scarf lol wow
I completely agree on the show falling after L's death. L is one of my favorite characters and his dynamic with light is what made the series special. Many people agree with you there. Nontheless I loved this review. Thank you Ryan!
Another anime with the "Big brain moments" is Code Geass, a certified hood classic.
What do you think about Mello being "M" making the successors being M and N after L adding a naming convention that the police use for geniuses
Thank you for confirming this, Misa is indeed a ride or die. 100% Try to keep up Keiko from Yu Yu Hakusho.
Ryan, have you seen code geass, if you enjoyed death note you might enjoy it
Also don’t watch the compilation movies as they’re a separate timeline
Great suggestion! Code grass really does tickle the fancy of eager to see more death note fans
Mangakas of Deathnote Wanted to end the Manga before the introduction of a bch known as Misa Amane but Shonen jump was like "We want More Money."
Did you... *TAKE NOTES?*
Ha!
I think a lot of us will agree, we have the same type. Like Misa misa and morda.
When I think Japan’s conviction rate’s I wonder just how many of the men light killed were innocent.
Edit: While I wasn’t a fan of Light at any point, the second his arrogance appeared when he killed Lind L Taylor I hoped someone would beat him. But I’m not gonna lie I when I was a kid, I was an introverted weeb living in a rough community I did wished some had a note book just to instill fear into every asshole who’s ever harmed or killed a good innocent person just living their life.
HALLO ryan like me im ur big fan. berserk!
YES SIR realiferyan is watching death note I love it next kingdom
It’s better than breaking bad that’s not even debatable.
This is a great video!!!
A world without Light ... can only have darkness
I was with Light all the way through as a fantasy aspect I genuinely wanted to see his hypothetical utopia
I think I changed stopped rooting for light around the time miss took the second eye deal and cut her life in half again.
Soooo what happened to Light after his death ?
Maybe a reason why ya don't like the last third is because the anime kinda rushed over that content? I've heard many people say the manga is way better for that part of the story. I can't say that based on experience, since i've only watched the anime, but i thought i'd just let ya know
The original ending was they both lose, L and Kira die at the same time, and agree after L death, the show became 7/10 for me
Death Note and Monster are top 3 or top 5 (no less then that) of my top anime. Its just simply top good. Only gripe is when Near comes in after Ls death. But even then Light and the rest are so well written and so good that they pull the weight of it
Bonsai pop, another wonderful anime content creator, just dropped a video on monster, hope you enjoy :)
Wait, I was gonna watch that too 😂Haven’t seen it yet
10:13 We all know that medium is premium.
I was always on Light's side.
Also respect for being a Misa fan.
Yeees finally😩👌
Was his name End or Near..🤔 it's been years since I've seen Death Note
Damn super late on this one Ryan... I died at that Misa part 🤣😂
My top three anime I’ve seen
GACKTO GACKTO GACKTO
gonna finish death note
What's your top 10 if it's not DethNote?????
Spoilers
Light is Kira
RLR has a death note but he is super slow walking his master plan. First name will be written in 2023. It will be Griffith!!!!!!
While I do think that its almost exalted status among Western fans leads to it being a bit overhyped. It's still an excellent anime
It was my first intro into anime. I liked it.
It's good, idk about it being overhyped, it's definitely very good
While he's no L I think people liked Mello a bit because at least he was...well, not L! Guy was a mafiosi trying to mug Light by any means possible to avenge his tutor and prove himself
He was a dummy in comparison of course, but a murderous one and that was a bit fun
Meanwhile Near was...eh, L lite
And they had to share the spotlight together, making both characters have less focus than what they'd have if on their own, which sucks
The issue with Nier and Mellow not being at L's level is that Light seems to have turned a bit dumber to be at their level. Also, the ending was magnificent if not for the fact that a match which is all about mind games is won by sheer luck, that was really a huge letdown.
I thought it jumped the shark with the amnesia episodes, but I enjoyed the series. K-Mart L is accurate.
Nice video! Near and Mello are much better in the manga. L dies halfway in the manga, not two thirds like the anime.
I realy like the series but they could've pulled post L kira better but the ost for death note is masterfull soundtrack
I loved the first 15 episodes but after that it fell off for me but still the tension is great
You should review Monster next
I swear he did already
The manga but not the show
One of the only animes where the dub is better
Berserk and Black Lagoon as well
I was with light yagami
SPOILERS
I love that moment when Light admits he is Kira and his evil laugh before that👌
Miyano Mamoru 👏
SPOILERS from Death Note: Rewrite
Also scene with Light and Ryuk at the L's grave...
Is so good!
I love L but I was with light till the end
I have many Issues with Death Note Manga and Anime but I still think it is a great Shonen title .
9:05 lol you crazy foo
Deathnote is awesome.
Death Note is better then mid bad. Don't @ me.
Read the new Death Note one shot
Death note is definitely A 10 out of 10 anime
As a manga reader I disagree.
It’s an 8/10 with how the second half was rushed.
I’m also not a fan of the anime ending.
she’s Goth,🔥🔥🔥😂😂 automatically she’s best girl 😂
You need A code geass review
This is like me and cowboy bebop , everyone saying it’s a classic. I don’t doubt that , just never made myself watch it, hopefully it’ll be as good as people say bout to watch it 😁
I see how hard you try to spoil in this video
Death note is an awesome anime and still is one of my favorite. I also think it's the perfect gateway anime for people that don't watch anime.
I was always on team light because it's fun and hype to see villains win, especially in a rare case like this where the villain is the main protagonist. I don't agree with Light's actions and morals, I absolutely agree with L, but I was always rooting for Light in the anime because I find his character more compelling and interesting, but it was also very satisfying when he finally got exposed.
Regarding Misa, while she isn't a great character by any means I think she served her role in the story quite well... I agree she is a top tier waifu.
It’s a phenomenal gateway anime. My go-to recommendations for early anime watchers are first Samurai Champloo, the Death Note
Is there a reason why you went with the anime over the manga? Just asking because I always thought you were more of a manga guy. Sure Misa Misa is loyal, but she’s annoying as hell, I just couldn’t stand her.
Ryan, were you on Walter White's side for the entire show? Or did you grow to see him as a villain and root for his downfall? I personally was on his side through to the bitter end. And same with Light although as you stated, the last 1/3 of the show was kinda lame so I had largely lost interest by that point anyway. Didn't feel strongly for or against Light.
I personally don't like death note, I don't know how to describe it but maybe "pretentious"? Kind of hard to describe, the premise is fine, the girl character was awful.
The worst Character for me in the Entire Manga And Show is Misa she is so obnoxious and she serves nothing but a plot device to let Light Spoilers kill L
I was expecting her to be Something Like Casca or Chris Macgniel from Exorcist a good Female Character but she was just a common shonen female troop Character
I really enjoy Death Note, but I couldn’t help but feel as though it had wasted potential. The concept is amazing and offers a perfect way to explore themes of morality and the justification of murder and whatnot. And DN does do this, but it seems like it only does it like 20% of the time during the show. It offers this really interesting set-up for a story, then basically says “okay now let’s watch Light and L be smart”. Which is entertaining and all, but I find it to be underwhelming. When the series does explore it’s own themes, I believe it does a great job, but it kinda felt like it didn’t have enough actual thematic content for 37 episodes and dragged everything else out with surface story nonsense. There are portions of the story that are more narratively dense though. Like the first 10 episodes for example. It couldn’t seem to keep that consistency however. That’s my opinion on the series at least. I would give it around a 7.5/10
this is my top\10 anime
