What kind of wire do recommend buying with the 215?
Hobart is the Miller brand but any wire will work with the machine. You could use Blue Demon which seems to be popular and less expensive.
ESAB 215 or Miller 215? Trying to figure out which one is better for a beginner.
Great question Greg! They are both great machines and either would be great to learn on. Some differences are that the Miller has Auto Set and ESAB has the Smart MIG. We have a video that goes in more depth about what Smart MIG does. This video touched on the Auto Set that this Miller machine has.
They both have digital screen which are really great for changing parameters and changing settings. The Miller 215 does have a rebate right now. If you purchase the machine and $500 in accessories you would get a $300 rebate and we are giving a YETI cup as well. www.bakersgas.com/MIL907693.html

Will this 215 weld 1/2” steel on a single pass?
No it is rated for 3/8in steel for MIG and Stick. Below is a link to the spec sheet:
