Given Gentle Giant preformed all over England between (1970-1980) I once never experienced Giant live, 'Raconteur Troubadour' would've been a fun song to experience live, the fact the various instrumentations including medieval English troubadour! during the chorus of 'Raconteur Troubadour', the violin plays the vocal melody from the verse. It is very strange how they fit together! Listen closely to the string solo in 'Raconteur Troubadour'. The opening melody is almost the same as the vocal melody on the verse, but the rhythm is changed. (I listened to this piece for eight years without noticing the similarity. Those clever lads.) In addition, the trumpet lick shortly afterward plays those same six notes of the melody, in a different rhythm. In Excerpts From Octopus, during the acoustic guitar version of 'Raconteur Troubadour', the main theme from Acquiring The Taste is played. Most of the medievalness of the album comes from “Raconteur Troubadour,” , it uses some violin for a vaguely medieval 11/8 main part and some instrumental parts. The album name "Octopus" comes from "Octo" (eight) and "Opus" (works), The cover for 'Octopus' (with the Roger Dean artwork) includes depiction of a massive octopus underwater - a world equally as mystifying and magical as outer space and the intricately imagined universes he has so often created. George Underwood, creator of the "giant's head" logo for Gentle Giant, also designed several other album covers that were never used. For Acquiring The Taste, his design was the Giant's tongue licking a pearl in an oyster shell. It was rejected by the band as being too similar to "In the Court of the Crimson King." For Octopus, his design was an octopus sitting in the giant's hands with the tentacles coming through between the fingers. The lyrical themes are generally based on literature and philosophy.

"Octopus", wouldn't be my GG record to begin! I'd go chronological order to experience the evolution of GG from beginning to end :) In concert, GG mostly played the tracks that would be popular. GG's self-titled record single "The Queen" generally used to end the main set, Ray would change his bass line to the national anthem. This would be worked into the very end of less popular tracks which was generally used to finish the shows, before being permanently dropped.

You can also compare this with "the black page # 2" or "the yellow snow suite" by Zappa or "Snorungarnas symfoni" part 1 by "Samla mamma manna".

If I had to pick 4 Gentle Giant songs for someone's first listen, this would not have been one of them. Love it regardless.
