  • This colorful, tacky, enormous mall was thought to be the solution to the dying mall crisis of the early 2000s. However it never shaped up to what it was supposed to be. Instead only lasting 16 years it now sits abandoned, waiting for redevelopment. Today join me as we tour the St. Louis Mills.

I remember that mall being a HUGE deal when it opened back in 2003. The first time I shopped there, it was packed! The last time I ever shopped at the STL Mills Mall was late 2009 and I recall eating at a nearby Bob Evans for lunch. The location just wasn't ideal, much like the now defunct Crestwood Mall.

I remember coming here I believe it was the first weekend opening, and it was packed. It felt like it took forever to walk from the food court to Burlington because it the traffic was insane. I didn’t really notice the decline until early 2014 when they closed American Eagle Nike and Aeropostale simultaneously. Then that’s when the other stores started leaving shortly after. Growing up as a teen in hazelwood in the 2000’s this was the spot on the weekend. We spent the whole Saturday walking around hanging out. Sad to see it like this now.

I worked at the candy store near the food court until I left Missouri in 2014. I was there for years. The three biggest factors that led to the downfall of the mall:
    1) online shopping
    2) location. It was way out of the way for most everyone.
    3) teenagers. Teens constantly were getting into fights and shooting at eachother, which spooked people.
I can tell you what everything in there was, I worked there for 7 years unfortunately.

@@NorthCdogg22 yeah it got to be quite a problem for a while. Made the news, spooked people. They tried boosting security and police presence, putting in curfews for teens, but the damage had already been done.

I used to be here two times a week, about 2 yrs ago. The Owner of the pretzel place is SUPER NICE and he has told us it was one of his best locations and helped pay for his kids college. There were some creepy security guards there thought. We always walked around and they told us to turn around. I walked by the church once and there was really loud piano music playing. No one was in there

The first door you walked in, I saw the paper taped on the glass, and literally growled at my laptop: "Namdar..." 😠😠 AKA Scamdar. Such a shame this mall failed. It's the most unique, colorful, fun looking (back in its heyday) mall I've ever seen. I hope they bring some life back to it. But I think they're WAAAY overoptimistic in thinking the parking lots will EVER be as full as what they imagine in their rendering. Even for a multi-sports complex.

I do remember the Mills (I will never call it The Outlet Mall). Last time I drive by there, Cabelas was the only place left. Burlington only used the outer facing half of their store.
I remember there was a Carousel in the Food court, And the only place I'd ever seen a Johnny Rockets restaurant. All the different "Neighborhoods", were at least unique in design, if tacky. After a while though the branding of the neighborhoods just stopped, though the tacky decorations remained (The Circus of Fire did have a kinda cool aesthetic).
This is a bit of a nostalgia hit for me. It was cool and all for the time. But what really killed them, was where they put it. In the middle of nowhere. 370 was really only used to avoid backups on I-70, so it wasn't a really good area to build a mall.

Good work! I was a teenager when this mall was at the height of its popularity and I remember going to meet friends here to go to the laser tag place, go-cart track, soda-jerks, and whatever else used to be there. I was probably too young to realize that so many stores going in and out was a bad sign - I just thought it was interesting to see what new stuff was there every time I visited.
Your video is majorly creepy - the last time I was in there was about 4 years ago after a visit to the Cabela's just to see what it was like and it was eerie but not completely empty and lifeless. I actually didn't know that the Long Horn had shut down until watching this - it was still going as of a year or two ago when I was last there.

I clearly remember this Mall opened way back in it's heyday since it simply replaced The Crossings at Northwest Plaza at St. Ann (as in the Mills was the reason for Northwest's downfall at the time) which was a Mall I used to go to way back in the 1990s when I was a kid (since I still have vivid memories of that TILT! arcade area which was in a basement beneath the food court that also had a very impressive miniature golf course down there from what I can remember) which no longer exists anymore since it closed around 2010 and the mall areas were demolished which it's now a bunch of office buildings although the Famous Barr structure with that large UFO shaped dome skylight still exists though.
Of course going back to the Mills mall, it's now kinda ironic that the entire area is now just a relic of the Bush era pretty much I should say. Although as for the restaurant next to Sonic was I believe used to be a Jack in the Box which I remember getting food from there once since I used to take walks in the morning in that mall before.

Each of those stores had a Last Day, a Last Customer, Last Sale, Last Employee to Lock the Doors. If I went back in time to 1980 and told myself the mall I was in at that moment would be abandoned by 2015 and then torn down in 2023, absolutely nothing would make me believe it. I worked at a lot of malls going through school and when I was cuter I could sell ice to an Inuit. Now I am hideous, and women call the police when I ask them what time it is. That's how to know if you're ugly. Of all the things to lose in this Universe. I could understand circuses because of all the poop, but who would have thought malls?

It's truly pathetic how Americans build build build and then allow those places to just slip into abandonment and decay. We'll NEVER have hundreds of year old structures like other parts of the world, because we don't know who we are, so we keep erasing the slate thinking we have a clue. We do not. This mall is just fun and lovely, and nothing is going to be done with it. Why the heck they built them this large was just plain stupidity. This large of a mall was doomed from the get-go. Sounds weird, but why can't these places be converted into apartments? It would take some doing yes, but the bare bones are already there. Who knows... it's just sad we allow these places to deteriorate into the ground.
