  • François Dufaut ( before 1604 - around 1672)
    Sarabande and Double in G minor
    Played by Antoine Pansera
    Instrument: 13 course Baroque Lute by Laurent St-Jacques
    Strings : Aquila gut trebles, Gamut gut for octave and Aquila loaded synthetic bass
    Audio and Video: René Paradis
    François Dufaut or Dufault, also spelled Fault or Faulx, born before 1604 in Bourges and died around 1672, was a French lutenist and composer. He trained as a lutenist with Denis Gaultier, of whom he was a pupil around 1630. Dufaut apparently traveled a lot: he can still be found in England in 1669. Not a lot of information remains of his life , but during his lifetime he enjoyed an excellent reputation as an instrumentalist, which is demonstrated in numerous contemporary sources where he was described as one of the greatest lutenists of his time. He left us 165 works, including this short Sarabande + Double of a suite in G minor.

      😀Thank you very much Marco! The writing is really idiomatic for the instrument, as you can see the hand on the fingerboard hardly has to move so yes it's very pleasant to play; especially compared to some classical guitar transcriptions!

      Merci beaucoup Laurent! Honnêtement, je préfère de loin cette Sarabande+Double à la Gigue; j'ai lu et écouté quelques suites de Dufaut et il s'agit peut-être de sa plus belle oeuvre. C'est souvent les pièces les plus simples qui au final nous marquent davantage!

    One of the most poignant piece for the baroque lute. Bravo!
    And by the way, I observe that you have changed the treble strings from Gamut gut to Aquila gut. Did you change it simply for the sake of experiment/preference, or because of breakage issues? I strung my 13c lute in Loaded CD string + Nylgut setup, and I'm considering changing my trebles to gut, but I'm hesitating because of durability problems. Would you be kind to share experience with gut strings, especially your subjective opinions on the tone, durability, feel, etc.? Thank you.

      @baroquelute  2 года назад +2

      Hi Dr. Claveciniste, thanks for your comment! I totally agree with you, I sight-read 2 complete Dufaut suites and this Sarabande really stood out. As for the strings, for many years I just played on nylgut + regular Aquila basses. Then I changed after my basses for CD basses (same setup as yours), and I think that's a plus because these basses are very stable and have a darker and deeper timbre. I've only recently experimented with real gut for trebles and octaves, and while I love and respect Aquila as a company, I have to say Gamut's Gut strings are superior. I tried the Aquila whole unsplit lamb gut and, although the tone was better than nylgut, nylon or carbon, I got strings that were impossible to tune properly right from the start. The durability was really not long and the chanterelles broke after just a few days. I also tried the Aquila beef gut, which are much less expensive, have a similar timbre and better manufacturing uniformity. The Gamut strings, although expensive, has by far the best tone and the best durability. If you have never tried gut, I highly recommend that you try it, at least once, the first days are just magical (except for tuning part 😂). Regarding the general use of gut strings versus synthetic strings, I would say this: octaves and even courses 4 and 5 will last a long time; but concerning the chanterelle and the third course after some time (a few days for the chanterelle if you play a lot!), they start to fray and becomes too sharp when you go up in position on the fingerboard. This is, in my opinion, the main defect of gut strings, because I can tolerate paying more, tuning more often or changing my strings frequently for the delicious timbre that gut provides; but playing on strings that cannot be tuned is an irritant. So be sure to buy extra chanterelle! Hope that helps,

    Thanks for playing Dufault. He is not played enough. What are all the body-frets on that lute? Whose idea was that?

    • @baroquelute
      @baroquelute  2 года назад

      Thanks a lot Brad. Yes, Dufault is rarely played, I'm working on a Gigue from him at the moment. Regarding the extra frets, I did that myself with ebony strips. Took me 7 hours just to do this as I'm not a luthier and have very basic woodworking skills. I recently transcribed a bit of avant-garde music on the lute a needed those treble notes. Have a nice day,🙂

    Very nice , Antoine! Why did you remove the guitars behind you on the wall?

    • @baroquelute
      @baroquelute  2 года назад

      Hi Stefan, I had to make some room for new incoming instruments (!) 😉. I gave my mandolin as I was not playing it (not really into plectrum+metal strings...), and 2 small guitars that are for my boys that I was just keeping in my music room. I still have my 4 classical but they are mostly in their case when not in my hands. On another subject, I know that you often play without nails on your Stenzel. Have tried Aquila Ambra 900? Recently tried it and I really liked it, especially with no nails. Cheers my friend,

    • @StefanNiggl
      @StefanNiggl 2 года назад +1

      @@baroqueluteHi Antoine, no I'm playing with nails again because I was having trouble playing pieces with thicker textures or faster pieces.
      But there are pieces where I really enjoyed playing without nails. But the time will come when the nails break again. Maybe I'll switch back to no-nail playing for a while.
      Other no-nail players have recommended this brand of strings to me.
      You play them on your Stenzel?
      Would like to hear how they sound on a Stenzel.

    • @baroquelute
      @baroquelute  2 года назад

      @@StefanNiggl Yes, I'll try soon the Ambra on my Stenzel. So far, from Aquila, I have played with Sugar, Alchemia and Perla on the Stenzel; among those the Alchemia are the best. Have a nice day,
