I just saw Roger Daltrey in concert. He just turned 80 and still sounds amazing. He also has a sense of humor and tells a lot of jokes and stories between the songs. He asked the audience to write questions on a piece of paper collected them and answered most of them.
My friends clubbed together to get me a ticket to a Roger Daltrey concert for my birthday mumblety-mumble years ago. One of the best presents I've ever had.
John Entwistle is a revered bass guitar god, and he was so perfect for The Who. You can pick out his incredible basslines and playing on every single song. What's cool about it here is that when they hit the chorus the bass does this descending run down to the root note, and then Keith is doing drum fills over that part with heavy emphasis on the toms, exactly in rhythm with those descending bass guitar notes. Love it! ❤
John Entwistle AKA thunder fingers was legendary on bass. Many of today's greatest bass players were influenced by his playing. Boss level performance !
Just FYI, the blue laser and haze effect is the same one borrowed by Ridley Scott for his movie Alien. The Who were filming in a studio right next to the Alien set for the egg chamber so Scott asked if he could borrow the state-of-the-art laser effects. The Who said okay and movie magic was made.
Saw them at Madison Square Garden in NY in 1972. That night was their 10th anniversary being together. Absolutely the BEST concert I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot over my 68 years. Epic performance!!
9:57 - ALIEN WHO? There's a scene in the movie 'Alien' (1979) where astronauts come across a bed of alien egg pods submerged in a mist pierced by laser light. To create this scene the movie-making visual effects team borrowed the smoke machine and laser light from the band 'The Who', who were performing in an adacent studio.
This video was in a studio (Shepperton) performance to create the video. It was a small live audience, so it was live, but it was not a "normal" concert. They also shot a BABA O RILEY video there, probably the same day. Well worth reacting to. Remember these songs were from the 1971 Who's Next album. This video was shot in 1978.
Part of Song Remains The Same was filmed there as well. Not all of MSG is in the film. Zeppelin liked that place as well...the Who was awesome live band though... I really enjoyed their performances and this footage here captured that. Also H.R Giger was at Shepperton and saw those lights and included the effect in The Alien movie.
You may notice that Keith Moon has his headphones duct-taped to his head. This, to keep them from getting slung off. John Entwistle serves as an anchor to keep the other three from flying off.
There is an "Ox Cam" from this performance. It has isolated bass and shows his true mastery of the bass guitar and why he was voted bass player if the millennium... i still think he's underrated!
Great reaction, Sam and Phil! I saw them live in Pittsburgh in the 70s. They were very high energy and left dropped jaws and pieces of instruments behind them at the end. It was one of the best concerts I have ever attended!
These dudes were all masters at their craft. This is pretty much how I remember them, John just stands there but his fingers are flying! Pete might be one of the most aggressive players, as was Keith on the Drums and that scream, one of the best in Rock ever.
i saw them on their '78 tour . It came through Canada and had a stop in my home town (Edmonton, Alberta). The concert was amazing and everything you saw on the video I saw in person . There is nothing like being able to see them live!
Great reaction to this performance. Here is an article from Rolling Stone w/ the back story of this performance: " On May 25th, 1978, a very rusty Who entered London’s Shepperton Studios to film a mini-concert for their career-spanning documentary The Kids Are Alright. They’d been off the road for nearly two years, though they did reform for a one-off in December of 1977 so director Jeff Stein would have new performances for his movie. Stein knew he needed amazing takes of “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” and he was displeased with the 1977 footage. Reluctantly, the Who agreed to give it another try. Keith Moon was only 31 at the time, but his endless partying had taken a severe toll on his body. He was bloated and out of practice. Nevertheless, the Who powered through a nine-song set that wrapped up with John Entwistle’s signature tune “My Wife.” They went to their dressing room sweaty and exhausted, but Stein wasn’t done with them. The director still wasn’t happy with “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and he told Pete he didn’t feel like it had a “definitive end.” “A definitive end?” Townshend reportedly said. “What do you want me to do? Go out there and fall asleep on stage? Maybe I should go out there and die during my last solo? Or maybe I should hit that motherfucker who’s been yelling for ‘Magic Bus’ over the head with my guitar?” The Who ultimately agreed to play the song one more time. This time Townshend leaped in the air during the climax, did a knee slide and bounced around the stage. He wrapped up with some windmills before lifting his guitar over his head, bouncing it off the ground and then using it to knock some cymbals across the stage. Stein was pleased, and the performance wrapped up the documentary. "
Saw them do this when they were on the album’s debut tour. Boston, Music Hall 4 nights sold out in hours. 3 rows from stage in front of Pete on opening night!. I don’t have to say, no concert before or since comes even close.
You saw it, and you get how good they are! I've seen them, my favorite band, 14 times, plus got to meet Roger at a solo concert he did playing "Tommy". They really are that good! I got to see them 3 times while Keith was still alive...I idolized him! Sadly, as great as this performance is, Keith actually was not well, and really was not playing in the way he was able to a couple years earlier. Although in fact, this song held him in check anyway...he was to keep time from the synth backing track, which is why he had headphones strapped on.
This was shot as part of the documentary The Kids Are Aright about the band. It's not a real concert per say, the place is filled with friends and employees and selected fans, etc.
Great reaction guys! Another good video to check out is them in a studio recording "Who Are You?" Very funny. Those guys cracked me up! All of them great musicians! I saw them live in '83 on then their final tour in Pittsburgh. Remember it well but unfortunately, Keith Moon had already passed. I saw them again about 10 years ago and hey still sounded pretty good.
82 was the 1st time the Who did a farewell. Their drummer, Keith Moon had passed away and they did not know if they could play without him, going forward. My friends and I went to several ticketrons (which later merged with ticketmaster) in manhattan to try to get tickets as this was the hottest series of shows. The lines were extremely long. 2 of us ended up with 2 tickets each to see the Tuesday night show, at Shea stadium. Others saw the other show at shea. That Tuesday show was a great night.
The greatest live band. I would recommend The Who "Young Man Blues" Live at the Isle of Wight Festival & "A Quick One" live on the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus.
An interesting fact about the light show. The movie Alien was being shot at the same time at Sheppeeton and the Who supposedly borrowed their lighting to do this effect.
The movie "Alien" was being filmed in the studio next to where The Who performed this gig at Shepperton Studios. The cast and crew of the Alien movie took a break to go and watch The Who gig. They liked the laser show at the end of Won't Get Fooled Again, they ended up borrowing the laser equipment from The Who and used it in the movie. So the next time you watch Alien, make sure to keep an eye out for The Who's lasers!
Anybody who was anybody in the 70's toured with the Jonh Bauer concert company. When an interviewer asked him who was the best live he said "The Who, even on a bad night they're better than anyone else"
Zeppelin did a few shows with a laser but the Who was the first band to do a full tour with lasers in '76. My first concert. Blew my mind at 14. Thanks for the great reaction!
John was the eye of the storm, with his amazing bass playing and calm demeanor Then the wall of that storm Roger, Pete & Keith was just crazy. I saw them many moons ago and I was drawn to John Entwistle’s playing- and I’m a drummer. I’ve had that happening only a few times where I went to see a drummer and the bassist blew me away JPJ with Led Zep in Oakland around 1977 and Angeline Saris playing bass next to drummer Jeff Campitelli a few years ago. Angeline knocked my socks off
NICE! And cool to see the Sunn Bass cabs in the back. Possibly made in Tualitin, Oregon a couple miles from me. Bought out by Bi-amp and disappeared! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
🔥🔥🔥 I’m getting old!!! I get super stressed out watching them break their instruments 😂 I love this song and that scream is epic. Eminence Front would be a great song to react to.
Back in the days when music was FUN! The first record I ever bought was "My Generation" way back in 1965. Roger being Roger, Pete doing the Windmill that he invented, Keith with gaffer/duct tape wrapped around his headphones and John keeping well away for Roger's mic - all brilliant. Saw them in Brisbane a few years ago and they were still awesome.
the movie Alien was filming in the nearby studio and used those lights in the movie ....its the mist that the facehugger eggs are under...its the same blue light from this video. you have to watch my generation live on the smother brothers show....1967....its a must watch if you liked this video....that one will "Blow" you away.
One of the top 5 live performances of all time! Right up there with Freebird in Oakland, Sandman in Russia, Sultans Of Swing at Alchemy, and Any song at any LED ZEPPLIN CONCERT!
Saw them several times including in HS during the tragic tour of '79 where 11 kids got trampled. That happened when they opened the doors but I've been to several rock shows during that time where it's so crowded and rowdy near the stage and you'd have to help people off the floor, especially young women and girls, even after almost falling yourself. Crazy and terrifying for a few moments.
Apparently, when the movie Alien was being filmed, there was a Who concert nearby. Some cast went to see and noticed the blue lasers. They ended up borrowing them for the scene with the eggs.
If you want to see 2 of the greatest The Who performances in my eyes are the 911 concert for heros, they stole the show & their performance on The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus...A quick one while hes away...Truly EPIC
I read somewhere that this was a retake of an earlier performance where the director or somebody had stated that Pete needed to have more energy! @ 13:25 Roger's mic hits one of the stands on Keith's drum kit causing that top cymbal to fall towards him.
the number on the guitar is how many he had disposed of in the performances of the tour he's on 11 here I'm not sure how many fell to this tour but I'm sure another fan would have that fact .
Notice that Keith on drums has his headphones gaffer taped to his head! John on bass is coolness personified while all around him is going nuts. Great band. Apparently the laser light show used by the Who in this performance was seen by some guys who were filming the original Alien film on another set at Shepperton studios. It impressed them so much that they added the same laser effects to the Alien film.
I was a big fan of The Who, from their early stuff, and the Quadrophenia soundtrack double album was a masterpiece in its own right. I recently read Roger’s autobiography which gives a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into his and the band’s story, and the dynamics between band members. On one occasion during a live performance, the mic actually did slip out of his hand while he was twirling it, and shot out towards the audience, apparently landing in someone’s beer.
Excellent video, excellent band and song, excellent reaction to it! Thanks! For your next Who experience, I'd suggest "Baba O'Reilly", also from this Shepperton Studios performance.
13:57- So was John, Sam..that's why he always stood so far from the rest of the band! (For his killer bass chops, his nickname was the Boris the Spider ) At the band's infamous after-concert hotel room destroying parties, he was just as wild as the rest, although no one could out-crazy Keith. I know u guys are pretty athletic and some am I, but Pete's across the stage slide? Big props.Even bigger for how in spite of all that chaos going on, they were one of the most creative bands ever.
John Entwistle said that going on tour was like being the only adult looking after three naughty children! There is a version of “Who are you?” also recorded at Shepperton Studios which is equally epic and well worth watching.
Saw them last year. No Entwistle and Moon obviously but still great. Had an orchestra and Ringo's son, Zak Starkey, did a fine job on drums. Moon was Ringo's pal and gave Zak a small kit when young. Zak also played for Oasis for a few years.
Your god damned right, saw them do this song and light show at the Pontiac silver dome in 1975 with 80,000 of my closest friends. Greatest concert ever.
It is the most iconic yell in a song. The Who is legendary.
Thats called a real rock n roll performance.
Yep, Roger at 80 is still singing those songs in their original key. You can hear his age but still an amazing singer
Saw him 2 summers ago at eden project in Cornwall.. unbelievable
John Entwistle is a revered bass guitar god, and he was so perfect for The Who. You can pick out his incredible basslines and playing on every single song. John "The Ox" Entwhistle: an island of stability in a sea of chaos; laying down the solid bedrock upon which all the glorious madness can roll.
John, Keith, & Pete locked in is peak rock n roll! All others would be steam rolled!
John Entwistle AKA thunder fingers was legendary on bass. Many of today's greatest bass players were influenced by his playing. Boss level performance !
One of the best live performances ever!!
They were unmatched on stage. Crazy energy.
I saw the Who on December 15th, 1975 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. They closed with this song. It was the greatest concert that I ever attended.
I was there too. One of the best live shows I ever saw, and I saw many of the greats, ie Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Springsteen, etc.
Saw them in Detroit that year. Best show ever
In their prime there was no better "live" band in concert. They were second to none.
"KISS".
The Who. No makeup, whistles or bells. Just talent.
It seems like, no matter how many times I've watched reaction videos to this performance, I'm STILL blown away by it! This truly is THAT good!
Can’t blame John for standing in one spot playing the bass with Pete jumping around and Roger swinging that mic around. 😂 I would do the same thing.
The cast and crew of Alien were actually in the audience for this performance.
Saw them at Madison Square Garden in NY in 1972. That night was their 10th anniversary being together. Absolutely the BEST concert I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot over my 68 years. Epic performance!!

The final performance of the original and classic lineup of Townshend, Daltrey, Moon and Entwhistle.
You may notice that Keith Moon has his headphones duct-taped to his head. This, to keep them from getting slung off. John Entwistle serves as an anchor to keep the other three from flying off.
Didn’t Entwistle say something like he was like a babysitter for 3 unruly kids?

Really glad y'all checked it out. Absolutely insane!!!
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.

Roger's scream in this song could break glass.
