1:06 SiS 530/620 was my first graphic card in the early 2000 decade!
It was a onboard chip on a PCChips M598 motherboard for Socket7 CPU slot and DIMM memory modules with a maximum of 100 MHz of bus speed.

yep ditto PCChips with SIS530, my first gaming DIY PC with Cyrix MII 300GP CPU, i actually loved it at the time, cause at the time most Socket 7 boards you had to fck about with jumpers and or dip switches whereas these boards it was all done in Bios although it wasnt long before the onboard GPU got replaced with 32mb Nvidia Viva TNT2 PCI Graphics Card, another down side to this board no AGP port even though the onboard GPU was AGP.

I used to work on asus p5sd2-vm motherboards back when i was at IT School and it had SiS Mirage 3+ and it was just powerfull enough to run Windows Aero but not much more than that.

Excellent video! You noticed even more texture issues than I did on the 315. Wish I knew about XP fixing the vsync issue, but alas.

  • @alensabanovic747
    @alensabanovic747 Год назад +7

Concerning blocky texture issue. This is inherited from SiS 315 core. It has issues with trilinear filtering. This issue is most commonly noticed in Quake 3.

    • @PixelPipes

I noticed the issue in Q3 with just bilinear filtering as well.

is it coz they don't know how to implement texture filtering ?

Almost as fast as the Rage 128 16MB. Only one small problem - it came out four years later!

In those days, Intel was the premium chipset, VIA is the budget alternative with slightly lower performance and SiS is the ultra low cost ultra low performance option. Most PC buyers know what they will get when they buy each type of product and the price they pay reflects the level of performance.

You're massively overestimating the knowledge of the average PC user. Only enthusiasts would know to even LOOK at the brand of iGPU, let alone know which brand is the best.

I had one of these when I was younger, I got Sims 2 to..kind of run but the water was constantly flashing red and black. I ended up with an AGP 6800GS pretty quickly.

The sad thing, is the last iteration of the Mirage, the 3+ from 2007, has the same core configuration and only around 30% extra clocks.
But really, the only reason these chipsets exists is cost, and power use.

Also I have a DFI NS35-TL Pentium 4 mainboard, with a SIS 650GX + SIS 962L chipset. I have a 1.7GHz 1st generation Pentium 4 (Willamette core), used it with a AGP video card. I plan to build a retro Intel Pentium 4 PC for nostalgia sake.

Like anything from SiS, their graphics card department was always lackluster, even when compared to the likes of the Kyro GPU's. Any system that I built around the 741GX was destined for office duty, as well was the VIA Unichrome.

it's my same gpu (SiS 741GX) on my retro PC now LOL. It is not so bad after all if you plan to use it on Win98, all games below 2002 works great, and it have excellent DOS compatibility (VESA 3.0)

Having seen this - my SiS 315 (Elitegroup AG315P-64 with 166MHz core/143MHz SDRAM) is not much faster with both a Sempron 2800+ or Athlon XP 3000+ (Sempron definitely wasn't holding it back).
While the 315E (Apollo 3D Thrill with 143MHz core/mem) is a lot slower - as it only has a single TMU per pixel pipe unlike the full and integrated versions. Plus it crashes if HW T&L is enabled due to it not even having the ability to directly emulate it through the drivers.
BTW - in 2001SE the Real256 scored only 3 points lower than my *full* 315 (which is also completely broken in Halo 1, while I used to play Halo CE on in safe mode with my second PC's Celeron D and Real256).

Does that board support dual channel memory? You’d likely get a minor speed boost if it does. Might push some of the almost playable games into playable.

Pity about windows 98, the specs suggest it should have been a really good option, as it isn't far off the final king of the 1990s, the Geforce 256, and even beats it in a number of ways. I guess the drivers let it down. Apart from that though, the frames per second aren't bad at all. This was par for the course back in the day. It is only today that people seem to think 60fps+ is how it was always meant to be.

End of 90s and early 2000s, in Brazil, almost all motherboards for K6 and K6-II had only SIS 530. A hell bad chipset with a especial deep level of pain for Linux users. Took a while to Xorg come out with driver to this crap. That's why I never had a K6 or K7. I really do not miss SiS. Hahaha

I had the K7S41GX, it was an abomination... I did finish nfs U1+2 on that integrated Sis gpu... minimum details/res at around 20fps. And I also remember the Integrated soundcard being so bad that while playing Prince of Persia Warrior Within, the audio used to sound like a dying cow, followed by bluescreens :))

the texture issues are well known, sis 315 had that as well. Sis 315 traded shots with mx200, sis 315e was more like tnt2 m64 to vanta performance. The fact that they recycled this chip for mirage is embarrassing. At least mirage 3 fixed the texture issues, allegedly.
